Cameron Diaz is proving that a mother’s determination knows no limits, even when everything that could possibly go wrong does.

The 54-year-old actress is back in action in the newly released trailer for Netflix’s upcoming comedy “Bad Day,” playing a single mother whose simple promise to attend her daughter’s soccer game turns into a wildly unpredictable adventure.

But there’s one thing she refuses to do: disappoint her daughter.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Diaz explained that the movie’s outrageous situations are rooted in something she understands personally: the lengths parents will go to for their children. The actress, who shares three children with husband Benji Madden, also revealed why the story feels especially meaningful at this stage of her life.

Cameron Diaz’s ‘Bad Day’ Trailer Turns One Simple Promise Into Total Chaos

The newly released “Bad Day” trailer introduces viewers to Joy, a single mother determined to show up for her daughter’s soccer game. It starts with an innocent pinky promise. Joy assures her daughter that she will be there, seemingly unaware that the universe has other plans.

What follows is a comedy of escalating disasters. Her car gets towed, her bank card is declined and confiscated, and her increasingly desperate attempts to reach the game attract the attention of law enforcement.

At one point, Joy and a character played by Ed O’Neill appear to take control of a bus, turning an ordinary parenting obligation into something resembling an action-movie escape.

The trailer is set to Bill Withers’ classic song “Lovely Day,” creating an amusing contrast between its upbeat soundtrack and Joy’s rapidly deteriorating circumstances. Danielle Brooks plays a detective pursuing Joy, who appears to have crossed several legal lines while trying to fulfill her promise. “She’s a criminal. I didn’t say she was good at it,” Brooks’ character jokes in the trailer.

The result is an action-comedy that combines physical humor, increasingly ridiculous obstacles, and a surprisingly emotional premise. After all, Joy isn’t trying to save the world. She’s just trying to make it to her daughter’s game.

For Diaz, the emotional heart of Bad Day is what makes the story worth telling.

Although Joy’s misfortunes are exaggerated for comedic effect, the actress recognizes the familiar pressure parents face when trying to meet their children’s needs while managing everything else life throws at them.

Diaz explained that she was attracted to the story because of Joy’s determination to honor a promise to her child. The actress described the character’s extraordinary circumstances as a heightened version of everyday parenting, where even the simplest commitments can require enormous effort. “Obviously, the situation is completely over the top, but the feeling behind it is so relatable,” Diaz told the publication.

She believes that parents will recognize themselves in Joy’s struggles, even if their own daily challenges don’t involve police pursuits or hijacked buses. That emotional connection gives Bad Day something beyond its slapstick comedy.

Cameron Diaz Says She’s Entering Her “Mom-Com Era”

Diaz has found a playful name for this new chapter of her acting career. “I’m in my mom-com era,” she told PEOPLE during an earlier interview about the movie.

Diaz and her husband, Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden, are parents to three young children, all under the age of seven. Her experiences as a mother have given her a personal understanding of the demands placed on parents, particularly when their time and attention are divided among multiple responsibilities. “You only have 100% to give,” Diaz explained in August.

She acknowledged that parents naturally want to devote everything to their children, but the realities of everyday life require them to distribute their energy across different responsibilities.
