Let’s hop into the Wayback Machine and travel to August of 1966, when Richard M. Schulze opened his first hi-fi stereo store, Sound of Music, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Capitalizing on the pop craze, the store made a million dollars in revenue its first year and grew explosively, expanding its product offerings and eventually renaming itself to…Best Buy. Sixty years later, the chain is going strong with 1,117 locations in the United States and Canada, making it the largest specialty electronics retailer in the business. How to celebrate? With a sale, of course.

Saturday is the official big day, and your local Best Buy will have exclusive in-store price drops. But online discounts are live now on some of our favorite products, and here are four of the most enticing.

Apple AirPods Pro 3 Deal

Getting Apple products at real deep discounts isn’t something that happens often, so a 24% price cut on the exceptional AirPods Pro 3 is worth throwing a party over. Best Buy has a bunch of Apple stuff on sale, but this offer is by far the most eye-catching. We gave these comfortable and powerful earbuds an ultra-rare “Exemplary” rating as well as an Editors’ Choice award in our review, with audio expert Eric Zeman raving that they “pack recalculated AI-based smarts and support features like hearing protection, live language translation, heart rate monitoring, and fitness tracking,” in addition to category-leading audio quality and active noise cancellation.

Although visually the AirPods Pro 3 look seemingly identical to the last generation, inside the shell big changes have happened. Custom high-excursion drivers with custom high dynamic range amplifiers deliver rich, well-rounded sound, and Apple’s custom H2 chip provides seamless connection to paired devices. Better battery life and longer Find My range are just the icing on the cake. If you use other Apple products, these are the best earbuds on the market, full stop.

Samsung 990 Pro 2TB Internal SSD Deal

Storage Wars isn’t just a TV show, but a description of how SSD prices have been exploding over the last year or so. Building a new battle station can really put a hurting on your wallet, so we’re happy to say that Best Buy is delivering some pretty impressive component price drops as part of their 60th anniversary sale. The Samsung 990 Pro is one of the better PCIe drives on the market, putting out solid benchmarking results in our review and earning an “Excellent” rating in the process. With great raw speed, efficient cooling, and hardware-based encryption, it checks all the boxes at a very competitive price.

Samsung keeping manufacturing control over its V-NAND flash memory and controller lets the company innovate faster than brands that rely on resellers, and the custom nickel-coated controller is the first one on the market to use 8-nanometer architecture, improving power efficiency by 50% from the last model. Durability is also a strong point, with the drive warrantied for five years or 1200 terabytes, whichever you hit first.

Dyson V15 Detect Vacuum Deal

Best Buy also does heavy trade in home appliances, and right now you can snag a huge discount on a powerful Dyson vacuum that’ll keep your floors clean all year round. We gave a glowing review to the V15 Detect, praising its numerous attachments and reliably strong suction, but noting that the $850 sticker price was a lot to swallow, even for a cleaning machine this good. Best Buy obviously heard our laments and decided to make things right, slicing a whopping $350 off and putting it in competition with other vacuums that it easily outclasses.

With a Dyson Hyperdymium motor that pumps out up to 230 air watts of suction, the V15 Detect has the muscle to pick up all kinds of dirt and debris, and the patented five-stage filtration system grabs 99.99% of the dust in the process. The robust attachments make for optimal cleaning on different surfaces and situations, including tight corners, hard floors, and delicate fabrics. The green laser diode on the vacuum’s tip lets you play CSI as you hunt down stray dirt you can’t see with the naked eye.

HP OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 Laptop Deal

HP’s OmniBook X Flip is a capable midrange laptop with some nice features, but at full retail price there are options we’d typically prefer. When Best Buy gets out the katana of savings and amputates $450 off the cost, though, it becomes one of the best convertibles in its price bracket. In our review of the 14-inch model, we noted that the OmniBook X Flip’s screen was bright and responsive, build quality felt stable and solid in the hand, and overall productivity performance was good. Connectivity is also solid, with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and plenty of ports.

The biggest downside to this portable is that it weighs a bit too much to use comfortably in tablet mode for long periods of time, but if you don’t mind a wrist work-out that shouldn’t deter you. At $750, it clears almost every laptop in this price range, especially convertibles. HP’s new AI Companion app jumps on board the trend with live translation and captioning, image and text generation, and more.

“Budget” doesn’t always mean bad when it comes to laptop shopping. With the right configuration, you can easily keep prices down while keeping product quality up—and land yourself a solid daily driver that lets you complete all your schoolwork, shop, or even just enjoy a bit of streaming without taking a sledgehammer to the bank. Sound like a plan?

If you found yourself nodding, allow me to introduce you to the budget-friendly Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i. We love Lenovo laptops here at PCMag, and we’re making heart-eyes at this particular model right now, especially since it’s almost half off at Best Buy. It’s an ultra-budget ultraportable that you can take home for less than $400!

The IdeaPad Slim 3i starts off hot with a huge 15.6-inch Full HD display. A big screen makes virtually all to-dos easier, especially since it opens up the floor for multiple window-viewing. It can reach up to 250 nits of brightness, which isn’t spectacular, but it’s perfectly fine if you aren’t tapping away in direct sunlight. Plus, the bezels on each side are narrow and don’t distract from whatever’s going on on-screen!

Now, what’s powering this likable laptop? This particular configuration uses a capable yet affordable Intel Core i3 processor, which is built for basic, everyday tasks, easy browsing, and light streaming at the end of the day. So, if you’re a student or casual user looking for a laptop that can help check off your easy (or just normal) tasks, this laptop will get the job done—especially with its 8GB of memory.

Our review highlighted its everyday usability, lightweight design, and overall good value, though this configuration’s measly 128GB of storage is a bit of a letdown. However, you can put the $150 you’re saving with this deal toward an external SSD to make up for it.

But if you’re looking for something different, check out our experts’ list of the best affordable laptops for 2026!

About Our Expert

Whenever I have to research a specific topic, I naturally turn to the web. However, I don’t always have the time to spend hours reading every article out there. Instead, I can ask an AI chatbot to tackle much of the initial work for me. A variety of popular AIs offer a Deep Research mode, which performs online research on your behalf. Just submit a request, and the AI searches the web for any relevant information. It then generates a detailed report, complete with sources.

You can try Deep Research with ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity AI, and Grok. To put them to the test, I asked each one to research how GPS developed from its military origins to the commercial system we all rely on today. Here’s how each AI fared and which one was my favorite.

---

ChatGPT

OpenAI’s ChatGPT provides two different versions of Deep Research. One is a full version, which offers an in-depth report that can take as long as 30 minutes to complete. The other is a lightweight option that creates a shorter and less in-depth report in only a few minutes. The version the AI uses will depend on your plan.

• Free: No access to the full version of Deep Research and 15 uses of the lightweight version per month

• Plus, Team, Edu: Users get 10 full and 15 lightweight queries per month

• Pro: Users get 125 full and 125 lightweight requests per month

After you hit the limit for the full version, submissions automatically switch to the lightweight one.

(Credit: PCMag / OpenAI)

I used the ChatGPT website, but Deep Research is also available on the desktop (Windows, macOS) or mobile apps (iOS, Android). By default, Deep Research uses the latest GPT-5.5 model. As part of my test, I used my Plus subscription in one browser and a free account in another.

I clicked the plus icon and chose Deep Research, then submitted my query about GPS through the full and lightweight versions of Deep Research. Both provided a game plan with bullet points of the items it would include. I could edit the game plan, click the Start button, or wait 60 seconds for things to kick off on their own.

(Credit: PCMag / OpenAI)

After the research started, the AI told me what it was doing as it checked out different websites and fashioned its research. The details here were sparse. I had to wait until the research was completed to see all the actions taken.

In my testing, the full version took a whopping 49 minutes to search the web and compile the results, which was much longer than I expected. The lightweight one took only around five minutes. In both cases, I was alerted once the process finished.

The full version served up a detailed and in-depth report that felt just long enough. The information covered the progress of GPS from its early military days to its current commercial use, providing a timeline, a list of key uses of GPS, and a satisfying conclusion. The lightweight one offered a shorter report but still contained a hefty amount of information, more than it typically has in the past. Both addressed the topic to my satisfaction.

Google Gemini

Gemini’s Deep Research mode is available to both subscribers and free users. In the past, Google calculated your Gemini usage based on a set number of credits per day or per month. Now, the company has turned to a compute-based model that factors in the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat. As it’s a more complex tool, Deep Research will eat up more of your usage than a regular query. Google breaks down the overall use of its AI as follows:

• Free plan: Standard limits

• AI Plus: Two times the standard limits

• AI Pro: Four times the standard limits

• AI Ultra ($100): Five times higher than AI Pro limits

• AI Ultra ($200): Twenty times higher than AI Pro limits

(Credit: PCMag / Google)

To start, I typed my GPS query at the prompt, clicked the Plus icon, selected Deep Research, and submitted the request. Gemini’s Deep Research generated a research plan outlining how it would address my topic, which I could revise or approve. When I gave it my OK, Gemini took to the web to conduct its research.

(Credit: PCMag / Google)

With more detail than ChatGPT provided, Gemini kept me updated along the way, showing the actions it took and the websites it visited. The entire process took around eight minutes. The generated report was long and quite in-depth, neatly organized into logical sections with a timeline at the beginning and a table of different GPS systems at the end. The AI also included charts and diagrams to illustrate the topic, resulting in an interesting, informative, and effective report.

Perplexity AI

Perplexity’s Deep Research tool is accessible to paid subscribers and free users. In early 2025, Perplexity noted that paid Pro users got 500 queries each day, while free users received five queries per day. Those numbers may have changed over time, but subscribers can still use Deep Research much more frequently than free users can.

To dive in, I signed in to the Perplexity AI website, though apps for iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS are also available. At the prompt, I clicked the Search button, changed the mode to Deep Research, and submitted my request.

(Credit: PCMag / Perplexity)

I gave Perplexity’s research mode the same GPS topic to investigate. The AI kept me abreast of its mission, showing me specific areas it was researching and which websites it was consulting. Perplexity compiled its findings and presented its report in about three minutes. The results were acceptable, but they paled in comparison to those from ChatGPT and Gemini. Perplexity’s report was quite short and lacked the depth and analysis provided by the other AIs. As a quick read, it was fine, but I wanted more; it failed to deliver.

Grok

Like ChatGPT, Elon Musk’s Grok also offers two flavors for its deep research mode. DeepSearch checks a vast number of online sources, though not all are useful or reliable. This mode is also quick at completing its research. DeeperSearch is a more advanced version that consults more high-quality sources and takes longer to run, but should present a more in-depth report. Whichever mode you use, the number of queries you’re able to run depends on your subscription plan as follows:

• Free: Five to 10 Deep Search queries and two to three Deeper Search queries per day.

• X Premium: 10 to 20 Deep Search queries and five to 10 Deeper Search queries every two to 24 hours

• X Premium+, SuperGrok: 20 to 30 Deep Search queries every two hours and 10 Deeper Search queries every two hours

• SuperGrok Heavy: Nearly unlimited number of Deep Search and 10 Deeper Search queries

You can use Grok and DeepSearch directly on X (aka Twitter), its dedicated Grok web page, and its mobile app (iOS, Android). To get started, you’re supposed to access Deep Search from the menu in Grok, but that option didn’t appear for me. Instead, I typed the following: “Use Deep Search: Describe how GPS developed from its military origins to the commercial system that we all rely on today.” I also ran the same type of query using Deeper Search.

(Credit: PCMag / xAI)

Using DeepSearch mode, the AI completed the process in only five seconds. DeeperSearch took around the same amount of time. The DeepSearch report was informative but brief, lacking real depth or analysis. The DeeperSearch version was slightly longer and more in-depth, but still lacked the detail and analysis I wanted.

Who Came Out on Top?

Based on my specific query concerning GPS, which AI performed the best? I give the nod to Gemini. Its report was the most thorough and in-depth, and easy and interesting to read. ChatGPT came in a close second, but lost points for taking a surprisingly long time to generate.

That still leaves the issue of veracity. We know that AI is fallible and prone to hallucinations. How can you tell if the information you get in a Deep Research report is accurate? Here, Deep Research offers a couple of benefits. First, this type of research typically consults the most reliable, high-quality online sources, rejecting those deemed of lower quality. Second, you can easily view the original sources to double-check the results. Yes, that can be time-consuming to do with a lengthy report. But you can still check a few points in the report with the corresponding sources to see how they match up.

Of course, this is all based on just one query. Still, I’d favor Gemini or ChatGPT the next time you need an AI to research a topic for you.

I’ve been working for PCMag since early 2016 writing tutorials, how-to pieces, and other articles on consumer technology. Beyond PCMag, I’ve written news stories and tutorials for a variety of other websites and publications, including CNET, ZDNet, TechRepublic, Macworld, PC World, Time, US News & World Report, and AARP Magazine. I spent seven years writing breaking news for CNET as one of the site’s East Coast reporters. I’ve also written two books for Wiley & Sons—Windows 8: Five Minutes at a Time and Teach Yourself Visually LinkedIn.

I’ve used Windows, Office, and other Microsoft products for years so I’m well versed in that world. I also know the Mac quite well. I’m always working with iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and Android on my various mobile devices. And these days, I write a lot about AI, so that’s become another key area for me.

My wife always jokes about all the tech products we have around the house, but I manage to put them to good use for my articles. I like Lenovo computers, so I own a couple of Lenovo desktops and several laptops. I have three MacBooks and a Mac mini. For my mobile life and work, I use an iPhone 16 Pro, iPad Pro, and iPad mini as well as an Apple Watch. But since I write about Android, I own several Android phones and tablets. Like any tech person, I have a cabinet full of cables, wires, and assorted mysterious gadgets. And when it’s time to take a break from writing, I have an old Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, both of which I use for exercise and fitness games.

Keep the savings coming with more tech deals on Walmart today.

About Our Expert

We’re neck-deep in all the back-to-school sales, with retailers and manufacturers competing to grab that cash in exchange for essential tech. Laptops are one of the most heavily discounted categories in August as new freshmen get ready for college, and deep discounts can be found if you’ve got the inside info. One sale you shouldn’t miss is at Dell‘s online store, which has exclusive educational discounts as well as massive price drops for everybody else. Here are the five best deals I’ve found so far.

Dell XPS 13 Laptop Deal

It’s been a breakout year for budget laptops, as Apple’s MacBook Neo disrupted the market with style and performance. Windows-based manufacturers are striking back, and while we don’t have a full review yet, our hands-on time with the new XPS 13 had PCMag expert Matthew Buzzi thinking that it might be the best new budget portable of 2026. This doesn’t look or feel like a low-priced PC, with a full metal build and backlit keyboard immediately drawing attention. The 1600p touch display is also extremely competitive at this price point. Under the hood, Intel’s new Wildcat Lake platform promises solid performance for productivity and entertainment. Dell has a student pricing program, where qualified buyers who provide ID can get a $100 discount on this portable.

Dell Pro 16 Laptop Deal

For something with a little more muscle under the hood, the Dell Pro 16 is a seriously well-designed midrange laptop with a lot to recommend it. The sizable 16-inch FHD+ screen on this portable adds some heft, but it also lets you work on presentations and papers with less eyestrain, as well as watch lectures (or Netflix) more comfortably. We have a write-up of this machine where we run down its many impressive features, including a slim, premium-feeling build, solid components, and great port selection. Dell has a bunch of configurations on sale, so make sure to click around the CPU and memory options to craft the perfect portable for your needs.

If your student needs a portable that’s a little more… portable, we happily recommend the Dell Pro 14 Premium, which crams a ton of performance into a pint-sized casing. In our review, we lauded the laptop’s battery life, solid build, and impressive array of ports. The Pro 14 Premium is the replacement unit for Dell’s long-running Latitude line of enterprise PCs, targeted at white-collar workers who need secure and reliable laptops for everyday tasks. The peppy Core Ultra 5 processor has the juice to tackle schoolwork as well. The sleek chassis is crafted from premium 90% recycled magnesium, and MIL-STD tested for durability and reliability. It’s also the quietest laptop in the Pro line, with a super-efficient dual fan system keeping it cool. It’s on sale for 31% off.

Alienware 16 Aurora Gaming Laptop Deal

Buying a gaming laptop at a student discount might seem silly, but there are advantages to having a bigger screen, faster processor, and a dedicated graphics card beyond entertainment. Dell’s Alienware lineup is filled with beefy machines with solid specs for the price, and you can snag a $200 discount on this configuration, featuring a current-gen Nvidia GPU, right now. Although we haven’t tested this one, we do have an extensive review of the very similar 16X Aurora, where we note that it’s a super-capable midrange gaming machine with a bright, sharp display, sturdy design, and impressive port selection. Improved cooling means this design doesn’t need a thermal shelf, making it more ergonomic.

Dell 24 All-In-One Desktop Deal

If the student you’re shopping for already has a laptop but needs something with a bit more power and a bigger screen back at the dorm, Dell’s all-in-one desktops have the answer. These sturdy and reliable machines are great for both knocking out homework and streaming Netflix, with a big 24-inch FHD monitor that boasts good brightness and wide viewing angles. Under the hood, a solid Intel Core i5 processor can handle most everyday tasks, and plenty of RAM means multitasking is smooth and stable. We have a positive review of this model, in which we complimented its modern design, plethora of useful ports, and included wireless keyboard and mouse.

OpenAI boosted ChatGPT’s Google Drive plug-in last week with a new capability that lets the chatbot access and edit Drive files and folders within the chatbot window.

The update began rolling out on Aug. 13 and is available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Business subscribers on the web. At launch, the feature will support files and folders in My Drive as well as those shared directly with you, OpenAI says in its release notes.

To get started, select Plugins from the left-side panel in ChatGPT and ensure the Google Drive plug-in is installed. After that, you can browse all your supported Drive files from ChatGPT’s Library and add them to any chat using @mentions or by selecting the plus (+) button in the prompt box and selecting Add from Library.

Once you open your files in chat, you can ask ChatGPT “to summarize, analyze, compare, or create something new from them,” OpenAI says. An X user shared an image of the resulting interface, and it shows a prompt box appearing below a Google Docs file.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

If you grant necessary permissions, all edits you make from this window will be saved automatically to the original source file in Drive. The updated feature also allows you to select a folder and ask ChatGPT to apply changes to all the files it contains.

Google already has its own Gemini AI features available in Drive. OpenAI’s new capabilities just give Drive users who prefer ChatGPT an additional AI assistant to work with.

For now, ChatGPT’s Google Drive updates are only available to paying users on the web. Support for mobile apps “will follow,” OpenAI said without specifying a timeline.

OpenAI also launched a Computer History feature on macOS last week that lets ChatGPT record your Mac activity and take actions based on a saved timeline.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, PCMag’s parent company, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

TL;DR: Get a lifetime license for Microsoft Office 2024 Professional Plus for $54.99 (MSRP $249.99).

If you’re looking for the desktop version of Microsoft Office without another recurring bill, Microsoft Office 2024 Professional Plus for Windows is available for $54.99 (MSRP: $249.99).

This perpetual license includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Access, and is designed for users who want reliable desktop productivity software without a Microsoft 365 subscription. Once activated, the software is licensed to one Windows PC and can be used for the life of that device.

Unlike the Home and Business edition, this version uses a device-linked license rather than one tied to your Microsoft account. That means it can’t be transferred to a new computer later, but it’s also one of the reasons this edition costs much less than other Office licenses.

Office 2024 also introduces a refreshed interface, dark mode support, improved security features, and dependable long-term performance without frequent feature changes that can disrupt workflows.

If you plan to keep your current Windows PC for several years and don’t need Microsoft’s subscription extras, check this out.
