‘Best of the Best’ Director Lena Khan on Making a Bollywood Fusion Dance Movie for Netflix, Working With Hasan Minhaj and Telling Maitreyi Ramakrishnan to Bring ‘Channing Tatum Energy’

Competitive Bollywood fusion dance has thrived on American college campuses for decades, but it has rarely been the subject of a scripted feature film.

Lena Khan‘s “Best of the Best,” premiering Friday on Netflix, follows childhood best friends Maya and Anjali as they join UCLA’s competitive dance team, only to discover that the road to the U.S. Championship is far more raucous and cutthroat than they imagined.

Written by Hasan Minhaj and Prashanth Venkataramanujam, who each competed in similar circuits growing up, the script drew Khan in even though she was not initially sure she would take on the project. Early on, she recalls mentioning it to a childhood friend, who was dismissive. “Bollywood competitions, really?” the friend said, and made it seem like it was not that cool, according to Khan, who says the reaction reflects something broader. “I think South Asians, especially in the diaspora, are so used to not even having our own self-respect.”

That realization shaped how she approached the film’s tone. “We have so much respect for the skill sets of other cultures. We’re looking at kung fu, we’re looking at these different arts. But when we look at our own, we’re used to seeing ourselves as Apu or as the funny nerdy side characters,” Khan says. She wanted the movie to carry a different posture entirely. “We can be proud of things that we do as South Asians,” she says.

Minhaj and Venkataramanujam drew on their own backgrounds for the script. Minhaj’s wife danced competitively, and Venkataramanujam performed with an a cappella team called Chai Town, giving him firsthand knowledge of how consuming the competition circuit can become. Khan spent time with UCLA’s own dance team and traveled to North Carolina to observe competitions in preparation.

Khan’s earlier work directing episodes of Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” fed into how she thinks about representation. “When you have more than one of a minority character, then there’s suddenly become real characters,” she says, describing the shift that happens once side characters are allowed the same depth as anyone else. “You get to focus on the humanity between them, the things that become relatable to everybody else.”

Casting required actors who could carry both comedy and depth, and several, including Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, had never danced competitively before landing their roles. Khan recalls pushing Ramakrishnan toward a specific physical transformation during casting. “I need you to give me some Channing Tatum energy. And then I was like, no, actually, I need you to do a Christian Bale on me. I need a complete athletic transformation,” she says. Ramakrishnan went on to complete months of intensive dance training ahead of the shoot.

Khan built the dance sequences with choreographers Phillip Chbeeb and Makenzie Dustman, with Joya Kazi credited as co-choreographer. Each number was approached with a single guiding question, she says: “What is the essence we are trying to bring out in this particular moment?” Where a typical Bollywood dance sequence gets five days to shoot, the production often had just one. The choreography also draws on multiple regional styles, including Kuthu, Bharatanatyam and Pakistani-influenced dance, reflecting the mix of identities on the fictional team.

Khan, whose credits include the independent feature “The Tiger Hunter,” says the industry’s relationship to South Asian stories has shifted since that film came out in 2016, even as some structural limits remain. “We still don’t have that many romances or romantic comedies with South Asians,” she says, pointing out that South Asian men are often not given the chance to play the lead. The film flips that dynamic elsewhere in its own casting, she notes: “The nerdy minority character is actually a white guy. Like we have a token white guy.” She also credits a wave of South Asian musicians and actors, including Joy Crookes, whose song she fought to include in the soundtrack, with making the film possible. “And now we’re like, well, we’ve really made it when we make a movie that’s just good,” she says.

That philosophy extended to how much cultural context the film explains for a global Netflix audience. Khan says she resisted pressure to over-explain South Asian references, trusting shows like “Never Have I Ever” to have already proven audiences do not need everything spelled out. “At some point this country and the world is just full of people in different cultures,” she says.

Working with Minhaj and Venkataramanujam, both first-time feature writers, meant frequent creative disagreements, Khan says, but never without purpose. “There would be such a thoughtful reason that we were always fighting over why we’re doing a certain thing, but it was never for a vapid reason,” she says. “And they’re also just the most gracious people.”

Looking ahead, Khan says she is drawn to projects centered on overlooked people or subjects, alongside a personal passion project already underway. “I’m always on the hunt for that,” she says, describing a search for stories she wishes already existed and a way to make them for a wide audience.

“Best of the Best” also stars Lilly Singh, Nihar Duvvuri, Nico Greetham, Amryn Khurana, Tanishq Joshi, Saara Chaudry and Sasha Bhasin. It is streaming now on Netflix.

Celo Adds Local Currency Payments for AI Agents

Celo has added support for local currency payments for AI agents through its native x402 facilitator. The update allows agents on the network to use Ripio’s wARS, wBRL and wCOP tokens for payments in Argentine pesos, Brazilian reais, and Colombian pesos.

Celo Core Co., the team developing the Celo blockchain, launched the native x402 facilitator on July 16. The company says the new support can help agents make payments without converting local currencies into dollar-based stablecoins.

The change is aimed at reducing foreign exchange exposure for users who allow AI agents to make transactions on their behalf. Agents can operate with the same currency as their owners, while businesses and developers can also charge for services, data, and APIs in local currencies.

Ripio, a Latin American digital asset company, issues the wFIAT tokens used for local currency payments. Its assets are backed by currencies, including the Argentine, Brazilian, Mexican, Colombian, and Chilean pesos, as well as the Peruvian sol.

Celo currently supports 20 currencies across 33 stablecoins. The company said support for wMXN, wCLP, and wPEN is planned for the future. Since its mainnet launch in 2020, the network has processed more than 1.4 billion transactions, driven by payments, remittances, commerce, and DeFi.

Nirvana will receive the MTV Video Vanguard Award for 2026 in honor of their impact on music and pop culture.

The iconic band made their debut on the MTV VMAs in 1992. Their performance had some lure, with the network refusing to let them play their song “Rape Me”; however, Kurt Cobain strummed and sang a few bars before going into “Lithium.”

They received awards that year for Best Alternative Video and Best New Artist categories for their track “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” In 1993, “In Bloom” won Best Alternative Video.

A British woman taken from her home by a gang in Malawi has been rescued following a deadly shootout.

Nusrat Osman, 47, was snatched from her home in the southern city of Blantyre a week ago when masked men forced their way in.

She was traced to the outskirts of the city, and a rescue operation was launched yesterday after a days-long search that saw a reward of £12,800 being offered for any credible information.

The suspected kidnappers were armed with an AK-47 and a pistol, according to the police.

Officers exchanged fire with those inside the building, killing four men who are yet to be identified.

Osman was reunited with her family, and taken to hospital for treatment and mental and physical check-ups after the ordeal.

Malawi Police Service said in a statement: ‘The criminals got shot and were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to the injuries.’

Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira was also shot and injured during the rescue, and was taken to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The 47-year-old, who works as an auditor, had moved to the southern African country with her family from Leicester after her husband set up a business there.

Authorities have not publicly revealed how they found out where the woman was kept.

The motive for the abduction has also not been publicly shared at this stage.

Atupele Muluzi, a Malawi politician, said in a statement: ‘It is with great relief and gratitude that I share the news that Mrs. Nusrat Jiwa Osman, who was reported missing, has been found.

‘It is understood that the rescue operation was extremely dangerous

‘The family has expressed profound appreciation for the professionalism, dedication, and incredible bravery of the Malawi Police Service throughout this ordeal, particularly Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr. Noel Kayira.’

Muluzi, the President of the United Democratic Front, has said that kidnappings and abductions are becoming more common in Malawi, where the incidents were previously ‘largely unheard of.’

Her husband told local media in the aftermath of the kidnapping he doesn’t know where she is or how she is.’

‘‘My wife is an auditor and I have no issues with anyone,’ he told Nyasa Times.

A spokesperson for UK Foreign Office told Metro: ‘We are pleased that a British woman who was abducted in Malawi has been released and reunited with her family.

‘We thank the Malawian authorities for their efforts to secure her release.

‘We continue to provide support to her and her family.’

  • Cryptocurrency Management Company Grayscale Announces that the Impact of the FED Interest Rate Hike on the Crypto Market May Be Limited!

Cryptocurrency Management Company Grayscale Announces that the Impact of the FED Interest Rate Hike on the Crypto Market May Be Limited!

Crypto asset management company Grayscale assessed that the impact of the US Federal Reserve’s (Fed) recent interest rate hike on the cryptocurrency market may be limited. The company viewed this move as an interim adjustment within the current economic cycle, noting that it does not signify the beginning of a new interest rate cycle.

Grayscale pointed out that a similar interest rate hike occurred in 1997. According to the company, the 1997 interest rate increase had a limited impact on asset markets. Based on this historical example, it was stated that the latest interest rate increase is not expected to lead to a large-scale change in the cryptocurrency market.

However, the company stated that investors should focus more closely on stablecoin issuers. Grayscale’s assessment highlighted companies like Circle and Tether, primarily because interest income from reserve assets constitutes a significant portion of their revenue structure.

Rising interest rates can contribute to increased interest income earned by stablecoin issuers from the assets they hold in their reserves. Therefore, there can be a direct correlation between the profitability of these companies and interest rates.

Grayscale’s assessment indicates that the Fed’s monetary policy decisions do not affect all actors in the crypto market in the same way. While changes in interest rates can affect the pricing of Bitcoin and other risky assets, stablecoin companies managing large reserves may have a different revenue dynamic.

The company stated that in assessing the impact of the recent interest rate hike on crypto assets, macroeconomic conditions as well as developments in the stablecoin sector should be monitored.

    FAQ

What Are the Different Types of Projectors?

Digital projectors create images using three primary types of technology. The most basic, DLP (which stands for digital light processing), has an array of minute mirrors inside the lens to transform white light into other colors. 3LCD projectors use a trio of LCD screens, one for each primary subtractive color. Liquid crystal on silicon, or LCoS, uses an active-matrix display on a silicon backplate for the most accurate colors, although it is significantly more expensive.

What Should I Look for in a Projector?

The two most important metrics for a projector are brightness and resolution. Brightness is measured in lumens, with a larger number being better. However, projectors typically have two distinct brightness numbers, one for white light and one for color. Images may appear dull if the color rating is lower than the pure white rating. Resolution determines the number of pixels the projector uses to create the image. 1080p high definition is the most common. For best results, match your projector resolution to the image source.

What Is the Best and Cheapest Projector?

We’ve put together a robust rundown of the best projectors on the consumer market, covering a wide range of uses, from large units to anchor a home theater to portable models for movies on the go. That frequently updated rundown lists our current top pick, but there’s no single best and cheapest projector for everyone. You should look for one that is fast enough for casual gaming, is bright enough for movies, and has decent built-in speakers if you won’t attach it to an external sound system.

We’ve also seen some excellent projectors from Xgimi, Epson, LG, and many other brands sell for their low prices, too. Mini projectors are also a cheaper option most often due to the compromises in bulb brightness. Check out In our rundown of the best portable projectors to learn more.

Do I Need a Screen for My Projector?

In general, although you can cast an image from a projector on any wall or surface, it’s not going to look as good as if you use a nonreflective white screen designed for that purpose. There are many different types of screens on the market, some for permanent installs, and even some that are inflatable for easy setup and storage. While they’re not strictly required, they definitely make your viewing experience better. Here’s our handy guide for how to choose the right screen for your projector.

    How Do We Test Projectors?

The short answer? Thoroughly. When we test projectors, be they data projectors, home entertainment projectors, or home theater projectors, we give the units a 30-minute warm-up time while running through preliminary setup steps before performing extensive picture quality tests. And that’s just the start! Dive into any of our reviews to see how deep we go.
