It’s getting a lot more expensive to be a streaming fan. Streaming service costs are up across the board, but so are prices for the devices that beam your favorite shows to the TV.

Roku is raising prices on some of its flagship streaming hardware by 50%.

• The high-end Roku Ultra sees one of the biggest price hikes, up $100 to $150.

• The Roku Streaming Stick gets a 33% increase from $30 to $40.

• The Roku Streaming Stick Plus now costs $60, up from $40.

• The Roku Streaming Stick 4K goes from $50 to $80

• The Roku Streambar SE jumped from $100 to $150.

In an interview with The Desk, Roku chalked up the increase to RAM supply issues caused by the AI boom, which is currently driving up prices across consumer electronics, from consoles to smartphones to PCs.

The good news is that Roku is currently running a sale in its official store, where consumers can pick up the devices at their original prices. However, you’ll be limited to just three sticks or set-top boxes per transaction.

You can also buy Roku hardware from third-party retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, both of which are currently showing the lower, original pricing. Some devices are even cheaper.

The news comes after Apple raised the price of its Apple TV streaming device from $129 to $199, despite not updating it in years. The 128GB version is also now $249, up from $149. The company also cited the RAM crunch as the reason for price increases, which hit almost all of Apple’s non-smartphone products.

As 9to5Google reports, Walmart also doubled the price of its budget Onn 4K Google TV streaming stick last month from $15 to $30. It’s currently out of stock.

Roku has said it tries to keep costs lower by “using less memory and also being more versatile in the types of memory we can use,” CEO Anthony Wood told The Desk in May. “In the TV business, every dollar matters. It’s a hugely price-competitive market.”

That came before Fox Corporation announced in June that it would acquire Roku for $22 billion, combining Fox’s TV portfolio and Tubi streaming service with Roku’s streaming devices.

Anthropic’s newest model, Claude Opus 5, is now available to the public.

Opus 5 comes close to or even exceeds the performance of its predecessor, Fable 5, in most areas, for roughly half as much per token, according to the AI giant’s benchmarking figures.

The new model outperforms Fable 5 on tasks like knowledge work, novel problem solving, and agentic search. However, it falls somewhat short of Fable 5 in task categories such as answering legal questions and performing multidisciplinary reasoning without additional tools. It’s also “substantially behind” the more powerful Mythos 5 at exploiting cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

During Anthropic’s pre-deployment testing, the company concluded that Opus 5 showed lower rates of “misaligned behavior” than its predecessors. The behavior suite found the newest model exhibited lower rates of deceptive behavior than previous models, and it proved harder to trick into misuse. Anthropic also showed that it was safer in terms of avoiding “reckless actions” that could create hard-to-reverse side effects.

Opus 5 comes after a turbulent period for users of Anthropic’s models. Last month, Anthropic blocked access to Fable 5 for users worldwide after the US government expressed concerns about how its offensive cybersecurity capabilities could be used by foreign countries. Access was restored several weeks later with restrictions.

Anthropic is also beta-testing several new features alongside the Opus 5 launch, including what it calls automatic fallbacks. This means users can now reroute requests flagged by Claude’s safety classifiers on Opus 5 or Fable 5 to another model, rather than being blocked outright.

Claude continues to gain ground in the consumer AI market. According to Sensor Tower’s State of AI 2026 report, Claude’s global market share was at 10.3% in May 2026, up sharply from earlier in the year, while its US share has climbed toward 14%. Over the same period, ChatGPT’s global market share fell below 50% for the first time, dropping to 46.4%, as Gemini made gains, hitting 27.7%.

• Private Relay: This is Apple’s take on a VPN aimed at keeping your internet activities private and protected when using Safari. However, it differs from traditional VPN services by replacing your IP address with one from a range of anonymous addresses based on your general region. Your internet traffic is sent through two separate hops, or relays, by two separate companies, so no single entity (not even Apple) can monitor your online activity.

• Hide My Email: This feature is an improved version of the Sign in with Apple feature that lets you use an anonymous Apple ID to register with certain apps and websites. Whereas Sign in with Apple works only with supported apps and websites, Hide My Email allows you to use a random email address—using a private.icloud.com domain—for any website or online form to cut down on spam.

• Custom Email Domain: Designed for anyone who already has their own personal domain name, Custom Email Domain allows you to send and receive iCloud Mail using your own domain name instead of an iCloud.com address. Apple’s iCloud Mail supports up to five personal domains, each with up to three email addresses.

• HomeKit Secure Video: iCloud+ also has more options for those who use HomeKit Secure Video. The 50GB iCloud option supports one HomeKit Secure Video camera, while the 200GB tier supports up to five. Additional tiers offer unlimited camera support.

• Apple Invites: Apple Invites allows subscribers to create event invitations through integrations with Apple Music, Maps, Weather, and Image Playground. You don’t need a subscription or Apple device to RSVP.

How to Purchase More iCloud Storage

To see how much iCloud storage you have, go to Settings on your phone, tap your name, then open iCloud to see your total amount of storage and what is already being used. If you’re on the free tier, you’ll see an Upgrade to iCloud+ button. If you’re signed up but need to add more space, tap Manage Account Storage under the iCloud storage graph and choose Change Storage Plan to pick a new tier.

What About the Apple One Bundle?

If you’re looking to consolidate your bills from Apple, it may be worthwhile to sign up for the Apple One bundle. This single subscription brings together iCloud+, Apple Music, Apple TV (formerly Apple TV+), and Apple Arcade. Apple One Individual costs $19.95 per month and includes 50GB of storage. If you have multiple family members, the Family plan is $27.95 per month and offers 200GB for up to five people. The Premier tier is $39.95 and kicks in 2TB of storage, plus Apple Fitness+ and Apple News+.

It’s a lot more expensive than the standalone cloud storage pricing, so if all you need is a few more gigs of space, this probably isn’t for you. However, if you’re already paying for Apple Music and Apple TV, it’s at least worth considering.

Share Your iCloud Plan With Family Members

If you’re subscribed to the 200GB iCloud+ or higher, you can share the plan’s benefits with other family members through the Apple Family feature. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings and tap your name, then open iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Share with Family. Tap Share Storage Plan and then select Send Invitation to compose a message that will be sent out to your family members.

For iOS coverage, an iPhone 13 mini works like a charm, though it’s already becoming a little long in the tooth.

My desktop situation includes a dual monitor setup with a modest Acer monitor. I also use a Logitech vertical mouse (who can use these ThinkPad trackpads) and a Havit keyboard (my first mechanical keyboard; I love it but my wife hates it!). I’m a recent convert from wired headphones; I have Anker Soundcore Liberty Air wireless earbuds for personal use and have taken to the Sennheiser HD 450BT headphones for work.

Whenever I have a second to myself, I’m probably gaming on my Nintendo Switch 2, Steam Deck, or Xbox Series S. I also still have a bunch of classic consoles lying around as well.

After a Bloomberg report earlier this week revealed that Apple could soon launch a leasing program for its devices, 9to5Mac has found references in iOS 27 code that suggest leased devices could be placed under strict limitations if payments are skipped.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is working on a new system that allows its financing partners to place leased iPhones in Restricted Mode if customers fall behind on payments. The Restricted Mode disables all iPhone apps and services other than a few essentials, including App Store, Health, Phone, Messages, Clock, Settings, Wallet, and Passwords.

The mode also displays a message asking customers to solve payment or contract-related issues to regain complete access.

At the center of this process is the financing partner’s app, which determines how many missed payments trigger a device lock and which apps or services are exempt from it.

To make the process easier for financiers, Apple will roll out a new system called App Managed Features. Finance partners can enroll iPhones in the program and continuously monitor device status to ensure the contract is in good standing, 9to5Mac says.

Apple will reportedly also introduce a new activation lock called the Partner Finance Lock. It is intended to prevent users from reselling leased devices when payments are overdue and will rely on Find My features.

We should have more clarity on this subject when the rumored “Apple Upgrade” program rolls out next week. According to Bloomberg, the program is set to launch on July 28 in partnership with Klarna. It will reportedly allow customers to lease iPhones and Apple Watches for 24 months, and Macs and iPads for 36 months.
