“Saturday Night Live” alum Cheri Oteri is set to screen her new pilot “Zen Room” at the Dances with Films festival.
Oteri, currently seen in this weekend’s new “Scary Movie,” co-wrote and stars in the mockumentary-style workplace comedy that “skewers the yoga/wellness world while celebrating its community,” per the official description. The show takes place in a small town in middle America, in a single-camera, character-driven format.
Oteri leads the cast as a “business-savvy partner on house arrest, whose antics spark chaos and heart in equal measure.” Ashley Joyce, who co-wrote the production with Oteri, plays Lauren, described to be a “genuine idealist driving change in a quirky town, with a real passion for yoga/wellness and community.” Additional characters local to the town include a senior student, an ex-cheerleader, and a bartender. Lisa Beasley and Aaron Latterell round out the cast.
Layne Marie Williams serves as director, with Jon Silver as executive producer. Ashton Swinford and Amy Tien are producers.
“Zen Room” will screen at Dances with Films on June 20 at TCL Chinese Theater at 1:45 p.m.
“A house-arrested business partner and a dreamer with a yoga mat — ‘Zen Room’ is a heartwarming, funny look at community in chaos,” said Oteri, with Joyce adding, “This is not a derivative ‘Schitt’s Creek’ take on a small town. We aim to bridge the divide in America with our stories in this small town and this Zen Room community. ‘Zen Room’ pokes fun at the wellness industry while delivering a genuinely affectionate story about friendship, family, and follow-through.”
Oteri recently reprised her role as Gail Hailstorm in the rebooted “Scary Movie,” which premiered June 5, and is currently starring in the Broadway production of “Celebrity Autobiography” at the Shubert Theatre in New York City.
Oteri is represented by Brave Artists Management, Danis, Panaro, Nist Talent (DPN), Ferrari Talent & Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher.
