Netflix is developing a live-action series based on the battle royale video game “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” (“PUBG“) with Donald Glover attached to star.
In addition to starring, Glover and his brother and frequent collaborator Stephen Glover will write and executive produce the “PUBG” show, with Donald also planning to direct. Michael Schaefer of Neon TV will also executive produce, as will Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H, the entertainment division of “PUBG” publisher Krafton.
“PUBG” was originally published by Krafton in 2017. The game does not have a plot, but rather sees large numbers of players dropped into one of several maps featuring a wide array of weapons, vehicles, and other items in a last-man standing deathmatch. Exact plot details for the potential show are under wraps.
“PUBG” is one of the most popular video games in the world even nearly 10 years after it was released. It broke multiple Guiness world records upon its initial release and continues to pull in hundreds of thousands of active users daily.
Donald and Stephen most famously worked together on the hit FX series “Atlanta.” Donald created and starred in the show, with Stephen serving as a writer and executive producer throughout its four-season run. They then teamed on the Amazon series “Swarm” and the musical film “Guava Island,” with Stephen also writing for Donald’s Amazon series “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
Donald is also known for his work on shows like “Community” and “30 Rock,” as well as for starring in films like “The Martian,” “Spider-Man Homecoming,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”
Donald is repped by The Team and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Stephen is repped by WME and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
Should the “PUBG” show go forward, it would be the latest video game adaptation to find a home at Netflix. The streamer is currently at work on an “Assassin’s Creed” TV series and a “Gears of War” live-action film. Animated series based on games like “Clash of Clans” and “Minecraft” are also in the works, while Netflix currently airs shows like “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” and “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.”
