  • Will the Fed Raise Interest Rates in September? The Latest Probability Figures Are In

Expectations that the Fed may raise interest rates at its September meeting have risen significantly following cautious remarks on inflation by Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh. The probability of a rate hike in forecasting markets has approached its highest levels in recent times, while bond yields have also seen a sharp increase.

Market expectations are rapidly changing ahead of the Fed’s monetary policy meeting on September 16th. According to data from the forecasting markets, the probability of the Fed maintaining current interest rates is around 55%, while a 25 basis point rate hike is priced at around 46%. A larger rate hike is seen as having only about a 1% probability.

CME Group’s FedWatch tool shows that investors have increased the probability of a rate hike at the September meeting to 55.7%. This represents an increase of approximately 20 basis points in just one day.

Warsh: No Significant Improvement in Inflation Trend

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, in a speech at the Jackson Hole symposium in Wyoming, noted that inflation remains high.

Warsh acknowledged that the inflation data released during the summer was more positive than expected, but said that it did not indicate a lasting improvement in underlying inflation trends.

Warsh stated, “While inflation data released this summer was better than expected, it doesn’t indicate a significant improvement in underlying trends.”

The Fed chairman also added that it is necessary to ensure that inflation is moving clearly and quickly enough toward the level targeted by the central bank.

Warsh signaled that otherwise the Fed might need to tighten monetary policy further, saying, “Otherwise, we have more work to do. This is our duty, our authority, and our responsibility.”

However, Warsh did not offer any direct guidance on how the Fed will act in upcoming meetings, nor did he provide a definitive framework for what economic data interest rate decisions will depend on.

    US Treasury Yields Rise Sharply

Following Warsh’s speech, US stock indices rose while selling pressure was observed in the bond market.

The yield on the 2-year US Treasury bond, which is highly sensitive to expectations regarding the Fed’s interest rate policy, rose by approximately 8 basis points to 4.31 percent. This marks the highest level for the 2-year bond yield since the end of July.

The rise in short-term bond yields indicates that investors’ expectations are strengthening that the Fed may implement a tighter monetary policy in the coming period.

With approximately two and a half weeks to go until the September meeting, the new inflation and employment data to be released are expected to be critical in determining the direction of interest rate expectations. If inflation remains stronger than expected, the likelihood of an interest rate hike will increase, while a significant slowdown in price pressures could reinforce expectations that the Fed will keep interest rates unchanged.

‘Days of Thunder’ Sequel: Anne Hathaway Joins Tom Cruise, Release Date Set at Paramount

Anne Hathaway has joined Tom Cruise for the Days of Thunder sequel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Paramount has set a June 2, 2028, release date for the follow-up to the 1990 movie, which will also be filmed for Imax and released in theaters in Dolby Cinema, 4DX and premium large formats.

Cruise will return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, while Hathaway will play a team owner and engineer. Further plot details are under wraps. The Top Gun star will also produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.

A script will be penned by Will Staples, with Jonathan Levine set to direct, as THR exclusively reported in July. Staples has previously written video games including Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare and co-wrote the Michael B. Jordan action movie Without Remorse.

Days of Thunder was a reunion for Cruise with his Top Gun director, Tony Scott, and is considered one of the actor’s most memorable roles. The film followed Cole as he was recruited by a retired racing legend, played by Robert Duvall, to a new NASCAR team. Additional castmembers included Nicole Kidman, Cary Elwes and Randy Quaid.

Cruise’s films, including Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, Risky Business, Jerry Maguire, the Mission: Impossible series, have helped make him one of Hollywood’s biggest box office stars, with his films grossing more than $13 billion globally. Next up, he is set to star in Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which will be released in theaters on Oct. 2.

Hathaway is coming off a packed release schedule, with films such as The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street debuting this year. The Oscar winner’s next role is in Verity, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, which is also set for release on Oct. 2.

  • Met Gala Organizers Reportedly Mulling Date Change Amid John Galliano Backlash

Met Gala Organizers Reportedly Mulling Date Change Amid John Galliano Backlash

Organizers of the Met Gala are reportedly considering changing the date of the 2027 event amid growing backlash over plans to honor John Galliano.

In July, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that Galliano’s work would be spotlighted in the Met’s Costume Institute. This exhibition serves as the centerpiece for the annual Met Gala, an event attended by the most elite of the A-list, with one of the most coveted invites. This would make him the third living designer to receive a solo exhibition at the Met, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017.

At the time, it was announced that the exhibit would feature all the highs and lows, including his antisemitic rant. Galliano is credited with growing luxury-fashion brand Dior into a global giant. However, he was fired by the company in 2011 after video footage surfaced showing the designer, who was inebriated, making antisemitic remarks in a Paris café. Galliano retreated from public life for two years and was found guilty by a Paris court of public insults based on religion, race and ethnicity. He received a fine and was forced to pay damages and court fees. Galliano met with Jewish leaders and rabbis following the scandal and received blessings from groups like the Anti-Defamation League.

The exhibit is scheduled to kick off May 3 with the Met Gala, which is overseen by Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director who also serves as a Met trustee. However, a growing number of voices are criticizing the plan to honor Galliano. According to The New York Times, criticism has grown stronger.

“In recent days, opposition to the museum’s plan to honor Galliano has grown among Jewish leaders in New York and beyond,” The Times reported. “Donors have contacted Met executives and threatened to rescind gifts to the museum if the exhibition moves forward as planned.”

As a result, Met trustees and board members “have been scrambling to do damage control,” The Times reported. This includes possibly moving the date of the Met Gala, which is always held the first Monday in May, to the following week. The current date of May 3 also happens to be Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, The Times noted.

Last week, New York City Council speaker Julie Menin posted a letter to Wintour, Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton and Met director Max Hollein, saying the decision to honor Galliano was “a serious mistake.” While noting that his influence in the fashion world has been “enormous” and “unquestionable,” Menin added that she had “deep concern” about the decision to honor Galliano.

“Mr. Galliano’s long public record of antisemitism, racism and anti-Asian bigotry is deeply troubling,” Menin wrote. “His conduct was repeated and significant. He was criminally convicted in France for racist and antisemitic public insults. He was also captured on video praising Adolf Hitler and telling others that their ancestors would have been ‘gassed.’ That is not behavior that should be easily overlooked or normalized. Recently, there were reports of a similar antisemitic incident that allegedly occurred in 2019.

“At a time when our city is confronting a serious rise in antisemitism, anti-Asian hate, and other forms of hatred, I find the decision to so prominently honor someone who has engaged in this behavior to be wholly inappropriate. New York City is one of the most diverse cities in the world.”

Menin added that she was “deeply concerned about the process through which this decision was made. Mr. Galliano’s rhetoric and conduct, including the alleged 2019 incident, should have been more thoroughly investigated.” She urged organizers to “reconsider” their decision and suggested other ways Galliano could be honored, including a “contextual exhibit or educational program.”

“The Met is one of New York City’s most treasured and visible cultural institutions. Its choices carry enormous weight, both here and around the world,” she continued. “I believe this choice falls short of the standard New Yorkers should expect from it.”

  • Anne Hathaway Joins Tom Cruise in ‘Days of Thunder’ Follow-Up; Paramount Sets Release Date (EXCLUSIVE)

Anne Hathaway Joins Tom Cruise in ‘Days of Thunder’ Follow-Up; Paramount Sets Release Date (EXCLUSIVE)

Anne Hathaway will star opposite Tom Cruise in the next chapter of “Days of Thunder,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Paramount Pictures has dated the feature film sequel for June 2, 2028, when Cruise and Hathaway will hit the road almost 40 years after the original Tony Scott film was released. The project will be shot for IMAX screens, and released exclusively in theaters for formats including Dolby Cinema and 4DX. Cruise released a promotional image on Saturday celebrating Hathaway’s casting and posing with his co-lead on a NASCAR track.

Cruise will reprise his role as the scrappy driver Cole Trickle. Plot details are scarce, but Hathaway is set to play a racecar team owner and engineer. Jonathan Levine (“Long Shot,” “Mr. Irrelevant”) is confirmed to direct. Cruise is producing alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.

In the original, Cruise’s Trickle gets recruited to a new NASCAR team by a retired racing legend (Robert Duvall). The first film also starred Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid and John C. Reilly.

Hathaway has been on a tear in 2026, with four films in theaters including “Mother Mary,” “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “The Odyssey” and “The End of Oak Street.” The expecting movie star will close out the year with the Coleen Hoover adaptation “Verity.” She’s just wrapped production on the Adam Driver military drama “Alone at Dawn,” and is working on a three-quel to her star-making Disney movie “The Princess Diaries.” Hathaway is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360 and Apex Public Relations.

The ”Days of Thunder” follow-up is the first significant piece of IP that Cruise will engage with after ramping down the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. He’s also on the hook for another “Top Gun” movie, and will return to the prestige drama space with this year’s Alejandro González Iñárritu film “Digger.”

  • ‘New Girl’ Reunion Is Not Happening: ‘There Are No Scripts,’ Says Creator Liz Meriwether

‘New Girl’ Reunion Is Not Happening: ‘There Are No Scripts,’ Says Creator Liz Meriwether

“New Girl” isn’t coming back anytime soon.

Despite recent claims by Max Greenfield, who played Schmidt on the hit Fox sitcom, that he has read “amazing” scripts for a reunion, show creator Liz Meriwether insists, “There are no scripts.”

I caught up with Meriwether at the Season 1 finale screening of her latest hit series “Furious” on Thursday night at the DGA in West Hollywood.

“I don’t even have the scripts written for the things that I need to have scripts written for,” said Meriwether, who is adapting Britney Spears’s memoir “The Woman in Me” for a movie to be directed by Jon M. Chu and produce by Marc Platt.

Greenfield set off speculation about a “New Girl” reunion in late July when he said during an appearance on “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle,” “As far as I know, it’s happening. I’ve seen scripts, they’re amazing.”

Meriwether responded to Greenfield’s claim with a very tongue-in-cheek video on Instagram. “Max told everybody that there’s amazing scripts of a ‘New Girl’ reunion that I’ve written. Um — and just an update on that — the scripts were pretty good until everybody just started giving me notes on every little thing,” she cracked, before listing changes all of the stars of the show requested.

For now, Meriwether told me, “I’ve honestly been enjoying this thing, whatever this is, that’s like this back and forth between the cast and me, and I think this is the show and I feel like maybe in the world of the internet…maybe the show is just this, these little videos, maybe that’s the reunion. I don’t know.”

“New Girl” ran for seven seasons from 2011 to 2018.

Greenfield eventually clarified his remarks exclusively with Variety, joking that he was confused because a reunion of sorts is happening. The cast, including Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone and Damon Wayans Jr., will reunite at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles on Oct. 10 to receive the Rising Phoenix Award. Greenfield serves as host of the gala.

The Rising Phoenix Award will recognize the series’ theme of starting over and people who make starting over possible.

As for the Spears biopic, Meriwether said she can’t say much because it’s too early in the process: “It’s really interesting because I haven’t written a movie in a long time, so that’s been part of the process is just trying to think in a two-hour story as opposed to like an eight-hour story, which is what I’ve been used to doing.”

She has yet to meet the “…Baby One More Time” hitmaker. “I would love to,” Meriwether said.

  • Ray Winstone Told Off a Director Who Was ‘Groping’ His Female Co-Star During Filming: ‘Don’t You Dare Do That’

Ray Winstone Told Off a Director Who Was ‘Groping’ His Female Co-Star During Filming: ‘Don’t You Dare Do That’

Ray Winstone recently recalled to The Times of London that he once told off an unnamed director after he saw them “groping” his female co-star.

“I had this director once,” Winstone said. “I was in a scene where I had to pick up this girl, and the director wanted to show me what to do. But he was groping her. That was it. I said, ‘Don’t you dare do that.’ He abused his power, took advantage, and she was a good kid, you know, who seemed a little lost. Anyway, it was dealt with.”

When asked in what matter the situation was “dealt with,” Winstone added, “Well, back in the day, if there was a wrong ’un on set, 99 times out of 100 it was sorted, either by the hairy-arse riggers or sparks. I’ve done it myself too, taken someone to the side to give them a slap or to tell them, in no uncertain terms, to behave. But it’s a different world today.”

Winstone will soon star in Season 2 of “The Gentlemen,” which recently got the green light for its third season on Netflix. In the Guy Ritchie crime drama, Winstone plays kingpin Bobby Glass. Later in his sit-down with The Times, he said the role made him realize he is “getting old.”

“When you’re not the young lead but the old boy, who everyone says they’ve got to look after because he’s getting on a bit,” Winstone said. The Times then asked if he had any plans to slow down his career, and Winstone quipped, “Well, you’ve got to pay the taxman, haven’t you?”

  • Venice posts record $1.1M quarterly earnings – Why is VVV down 13%?

Venice posts record $1.1M quarterly earnings – Why is VVV down 13%?

Venice Token [$VVV] dropped 13% to $16.03 at press time.

However, the decline contrasted sharply with Venice Token’s improving protocol-level performance.

DeFiLlama data showed record Quarterly Earnings of $1.1 million. Monthly Earnings also reached a record $654,000.

    Source: DeFiLlama

The earnings growth suggested that activity and platform usage increased despite recent market turmoil.

Even so, stronger protocol performance had yet to support $VVV’s price. This divergence raised two questions. Was $VVV entering a bearish phase, and which traders were driving the decline?

    Are derivatives traders pressuring $VVV?

$VVV’s perpetual market showed the clearest signs of weakening trader sentiment. The Funding Rate fell from 0.0141% on the 28th of August to 0.0001% at press time.

The Funding Rate remained marginally positive. Therefore, the decline showed weakening long demand rather than confirmed short dominance.

    Source: CoinGlass

However, $VVV’s Long/Short Ratio fell to 0.86, according to CoinGlass. A reading below one indicated that short accounts outnumbered long accounts within the measured market.

Together, both Metrics pointed toward a weaker derivatives bias. Continued short positioning could maintain pressure on $VVV’s price.

    Are spot traders buying $VVV?

By contrast, the altcoin’s Spot Market Netflow remained negative over recent sessions.

Approximately $267,000 left centralized exchanges within 12 hours. Negative Netflows had also persisted for three days.

    Source: CoinGlass

These outflows could indicate that holders were withdrawing $VVV from exchanges, reducing immediately available selling supply. However, negative Netflows alone cannot confirm fresh buying or long-term holding.

$VVV therefore faced a clear market split. Derivatives traders leaned bearish, while Spot outflows suggested that exchange-side supply was tightening.

If Spot accumulation continues, $VVV could attempt a near-term recovery. However, persistent derivatives pressure could delay that move despite Venice Token’s record earnings.

    Final Summary

    • Venice Token fell 13% to $16.03 despite record protocol Earnings. $VVV recorded $1.1 million in Quarterly Earnings.
    • $VVV’s Funding Rate fell sharply but remained marginally positive. The declining Funding Rate showed weaker long demand, rather than confirmed short dominance.
  • Siri AI Can Only Do So Much. For Smart Home Dominance, Apple Needs to Improve These Two Products, and Fast

Siri AI Can Only Do So Much. For Smart Home Dominance, Apple Needs to Improve These Two Products, and Fast

As a longtime technology journalist, I’ve slogged through multiple smart home platform transitions and poorly implemented gadgets. It’s easy to be skeptical; companies discontinue devices and services every year, and home voice assistants still need work.

That said, an honest evaluation of Apple’s current smart home landscape reveals it’s not in terrible shape. Matter has helped a lot in this regard, and it’s poised to get even better thanks to Siri AI in iOS 27 and a rumored refresh of Apple’s smart home devices.

Of course, there’s always room for improvement, and HomeKit could benefit from upgrades in two areas: cameras and controllers. Here’s why it’s critical.

Apple’s Smart Home Camera Solutions Are Lacking

Instead of separate notifications about each action, Apple's AI will provide a single, detailed alert about the event

Instead of separate notifications, Apple’s AI will provide a single, detailed alert. (Credit: Apple)

Apple seems to be aware that it’s lacking in the security camera department. It’s upped its feature set in iOS 27, specifically around HomeKit cameras appearing in the Home app. Notifications can be grouped, so events like someone arriving at the house don’t create a flurry of alerts. You can also search for events across all compatible cameras at your house.

The problem, however, is the lackluster camera support. Most of PCMag’s picks for best outdoor home security cameras, for example, don’t support HomeKit Secure Video, and won’t be able to take advantage of those iOS 27 features.

When all of my cameras were Google Nest and available in one app, I was happy to ignore competing products. But now, with the Nest app dropped in favor of Google Home, the demise of Nest Protect, and the company waiting years between speaker upgrades, it’s gotten harder to be satisfied with anything Nest-related.

But whether it’s keeping an eye on deliveries, kids, or other guests, a video doorbell is just an integral piece of a smart home now. As a result, I have three apps to view four cameras. It’s driving my family crazy. The devices all perform well, but they’re not HomeKit-compatible, so they’re not in the Home app.

Apple could fix this by building its own solution, starting with a video doorbell or front door camera, which are more universal than locks or thermostats.

Apple’s Home App Needs Better Controllers and Access Points

iPad-like device on a wall with someone reaching to touch it

Apple’s rumored device could look something like this. (Credit: recep-bg/Getty Images)

I’d like a reliable way to control my smart home without having to take my phone out of my pocket each time I want to change something. My family puts up with all of our lights being controlled via voice, but the experience has degraded over the years. We need a home controller that everyone can freely access through one app; in this case, Apple’s Home app.

    Recommended by Our Editors

Apple reportedly has a smart home hub in the works, which we could see as soon as October. It has been waiting for Siri AI to be ready, but the company already has all the hardware pieces in place, from the iPad for displays to the HomePod for smart speakers. On the software side, it has things like widgets and Live Activities for glanceable data and easy control, not to mention support for third-party apps.

Apple’s Smart Home Needs More Than Siri AI

After trying Siri AI during the beta period and seeing other people put it to work, I do think it’s finally a much better product. The virtual assistant seems ready to help across all Apple devices, including in the smart home.

But as much as Siri AI fills in all the gaps, it can’t do all the work. Apple should invest in a more full-featured home hub, a la the Apple TV box, that helps power more automations and devices. But most importantly, Apple needs to release its own camera, followed by a touch-screen home controller. Is this all on tap for its Sept. 9 “surprise and shine” event? Stay tuned.

  • Hyte Y50 RGB Review: A Panoramic View, a Pocket-Friendly Price

I received the Snow White version of the Y50. (To my eyes, this is more of an arctic white with a slightly bluish cast.) You’ll want to choose your color based on the motif your build is going for, as well as the color schemes of your main parts, such as the motherboard and GPU.

Designed to show off your internal components, the half-wrap glass with a clipped corner has been a signature part of Hyte’s high-end case models, and here it has trickled down to mainstream pricing. Of course, in a build like this, you may want to install a vertical video card, but this case isn’t suited for that. The Y50’s lower price meant Hyte had to remove the spendy PCI Express riser cable and vertical bracket that its Y60 included. Also, the PCI Express card mounting zone is designed for “ordinary”-orientation GPU installs.

On the upside, the Y50 RGB has one more fan than the Y60, and the new fan configuration is all—as the name implies—digitally addressable RGB (technically, ARGB). Plus, for its three stacked fans, Hyte uses a reversed-blade fan design, allowing the Y50 RGB to hide its fan motors on the inlet side. All three of these fans are joined by a triple-fan frame at the front of the case’s right side. That keeps cabling clean and easy.

    (Credit: Thomas Soderstrom)

External connectors follow a familiar layout, with the power button inside a lighted power-indicator ring, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports to its sides, a headset combo jack, and a Gen 2×2 Type-C port, all squeezed into the slanted outer edge of the case’s front bottom. The 3.5mm combo jack works with both stereo headphones and microphone-integrated headsets.

Behind that panel, though, is another design curiosity: Hyte sinks the floor to its right to make extra room for 360mm-format radiators up to 410mm long, raises the floor to its left to conceal bottom-mounted fans up to 32mm thick (these you’d have to provide yourself), and makes the center section wide enough (around 4 inches) to display various choices of novelty—if so desired.

The front panel I/O on the Hyte Y50 RGB

    (Credit: Thomas Soderstrom)

The dual 120mm bottom fan mount is factory covered in the Y50 RGB’s only dust filter.

The bottom of the Hyte Y50 RGB

    (Credit: Thomas Soderstrom)

Around back are the seven-slot card panel, a 120mm exhaust fan that you can adjust up and down, a power supply flange in the right side chamber, and a decoratively plated Hyte logo case badge. The two screws beneath the case badge secure an internal drive cage.

A pattern of vents on the Y50 RGB’s right side-panel covers its triple-fan mount from top to bottom, then turns toward the rear to vent the power supply.

The rear of the Hyte Y50 RGB

    (Credit: Thomas Soderstrom)

The Y50 RGB’s top fan mount is unusual in that it has three rows of screw slots on both its left and right sides. Using the outer mounts lets you fit up to two 140mm fans or a 280mm-format radiator, but smaller 120mm units fit in all three locations. While we’d generally recommend installing a 360mm-format radiator toward the outside to gain more motherboard clearance, doing so limits radiator space (behind the front’s angled glass) to 400mm. Moving that same 360mm-format radiator inward one slot gives it 410mm of space, and moving it all the way in gives it 420mm of space.

Having considered those measurements, we still found that a radiator around 406mm long fit the outer slots, simply because the radius at the edge of its end cap just cleared the angled glass.

Notice how some of the cable passages that surround the motherboard tray in previous photos disappear in the dead-on shot. That’s because Hyte filled those holes with plastic guides that only face upward from the top of the board and forward from its front. Lacking those guides, holes around the outer edge of the motherboard tray are actually designed for reverse-connector full-ATX motherboards of the Asus BTF, Gigabyte Stealth, and MSI Project Zero type.

Viewing the interior from this angle should quell most concerns about top-mounted cooler clearance, seeing as the large gap (more than 70mm) above the motherboard mounting area is clearly visible.

A quick look into the power supply chamber gives us a better inkling of the shape of those cable guides. You can also see the drive cage that sits above the power supply bay and the cable passages that feed the side fans.

The cage has space for two 3.5-inch and two 2.5-inch drives. The 3.5-inch drive section has a few extra holes to allow up to four 2.5-inch drives to be mounted on one edge. The entire piece can hold up to six 2.5-inch drives if desired.
