Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz’s Action Thriller ‘Day Drinker’ Sets 2027 Release Date

“Day Drinker,” an action thriller starring Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, will sail to theaters in 2027.

Lionsgate, which is releasing the film, has set a release of March 26, 2027. “Day Drinker” is taking the place of the studio’s “The Resurrection of the Christ Part One,” which was postponed to May 6, 2027.

“Day Drinker” follows a private-yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) who meets a mysterious onboard guest (Depp) — only for both of them to find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz) and connected in unexpected ways. The project reunites Depp and Cruz, who have shared the screen in “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”

This marks one of Depp’s first mainstream Hollywood movie since his high-profile legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. He’s also starring in this November’s holiday-themed fantasy adventure “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol” at Paramount. Though he’s made several international films — starring in 2023’s “Jeanne du Barry” and directing “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness” — he hadn’t been hired by a major U.S. studio since 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” After losing a 2020 U.K. libel case involving Heard’s abuse allegations, he was forced to exit from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. Depp won a subsequent defamation trial in the U.S. in 2022.

Marc Webb, best known for “The Amazing Spider-Man” and Disney’s “Snow White” remake, is directing “Day Drinker.” Zach Dean, whose credits include “The Tomorrow War” and “Fast X,” wrote the screenplay. The film will be produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who backed the “John Wick” franchise for Lionsgate. Additional producers include Adam Kolbrenner, Dean and Nathan Kahane.
