Film Independent is expanding the Film Independent Spirit Awards with the introduction of the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award, a new honor recognizing narrative film and television works that engage with environmental issues through innovative and impactful storytelling.
Created in partnership with The Redford Center, the award will celebrate a singular American narrative feature film or television project that explores environmental themes, ranging from climate change and environmental justice to conservation efforts, Indigenous knowledge systems and technological innovations aimed at addressing ecological challenges.
The new category is designed to spotlight stories that move beyond traditional environmental narratives, emphasizing creativity, possibility and audience engagement. Eligible works may focus directly on environmental issues or feature lead characters whose journeys are deeply intertwined with them.
“We are thrilled to partner with The Redford Center to launch the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award, celebrating the power of independent filmmakers to inspire hope and real action through storytelling,” said Shawn Davis, executive producer of the Film Independent Spirit Awards. “This award aligns with our mission to champion bold, innovative voices that challenge and redefine how we engage with the world’s most pressing issues.”
Named in honor of actor, filmmaker and environmental advocate Robert Redford, the award seeks to continue his legacy of supporting independent artists and elevating stories that can influence public understanding and action.
“Robert Redford believed fiercely in the power of storytelling to alter how people see the world and championed the independent filmmakers bold enough to bring those stories to life,” said Jill Tidman, executive director of The Redford Center. “He elevated overlooked voices and spotlighted urgent issues. This award honors his legacy by recognizing exceptional storytelling that deepens our understanding of environmental challenges while inspiring action.”
According to Film Independent, submissions will be evaluated on criteria that reflect both the Spirit Awards’ mission and the specific goals of the new category. Judges will assess originality, diversity of perspective, innovation in storytelling and the strength of each project’s environmental themes. Priority will be given to works that take an entertainment-first approach while encouraging audiences to envision solutions and possibilities through compelling characters and narratives.
The recipient of the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award will be announced alongside the rest of the Spirit Awards nominees in December before being presented during the 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony on March 6.
Submissions for the 2027 Spirit Awards open Aug. 18, with jury committee meetings and deliberations scheduled throughout September and October.
