“It’s a tragedy, a nightmare,” Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said during remarks to the press.

“One suspect was neutralised and is now dead,” the visibly shaken chief said.

The news service AFP reported that the attack resulted in the death of a police officer, a civilian, and the suspected attacker. Little information is yet available about the slain resident. No suspected motive has been revealed so far.

“It’s important to be very careful of rumours,” said Dagher.

Quebec Premier Christine Frechette said she was “deeply shaken by the tragic events.”

“It is essential to allow the authorities to do their work and to avoid speculation,” added Frechette.

Law enforcement earlier warned of an “armed and dangerous” suspect in the city’s Cote-des-Neiges area and urged residents to stay indoors. Police started leaving the scene in the afternoon and AFP reported that traffic has started to resume.

“The operation is coming to an end and people will be able to circulate freely,” the chief told reporters.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also offered his condolences following the incident.

“I was appalled to learn that a police officer and a civilian were killed and that other people were injured during a shooting that took place today in Montreal,” Carney said in a social media post. “My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, the first responders, and the entire Cote-des-Neiges community. I want to express my gratitude to our courageous police officers, whose heroic dedication ensures the protection of our communities.”
