“Street Fighter” punched its way to the top of the box office in a new-release-filled weekend, battling fellow openers “Sense and Sensibility,” “Whalefall” and “You Can See Everything.”
The Paramount Pictures movie generated $13 million from 3,575 North American theaters on Friday. It’s a strong start for the action film, which looks to pull in $31 million by Sunday.
“Street Fighter,” directed by Kitao Sakurai, stars Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji as two estranged fighters in the 90s who are recruited to enter a tournament that forces them to face off against each other. Based on the Capcom video game series, this iteration of “Street Fighter” is the third go-around for the IP — the first live-action film, released in 1994 and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, was a box office hit with $100 million (not adjusted for inflation), while 2009’s “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” earned just $12.8 million against a $50 million budget, becoming a major misfire for 20th Century.
A24’s much-hyped Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” landed in second place on Friday, grossing $5.54 million on Friday from 855 North American theaters. Per rival estimates, the film looks to add $12.45 million by Sunday, exceeding initial estimates of a $7 to $8 million opening weekend. The documentary should overtake Amazon MGM’s “Melania,” which landed the biggest opening for a non-music or concert doc in over a decade with $7.1 million from 1,778 theaters.
In the buzzy doc, comedian Nathan Fielder and “Primetime” filmmaker Lance Oppenheim quietly worked for more than three years on the movie, which offers an unhinged look at the Theranos founder a month before she began an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors.
Coming in right ahead of “Whalefall,” Focus Features’ “Sense and Sensibility” pulled in $3.3 million on Friday from 2,545 North American theaters, good enough for a third-place finish. The Georgia Oakley-directed remake of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” is targeting a $6.7 million opening weekend.
Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles star in the latest adaptation as sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who navigate love, loss and financial uncertainty as they are forced to leave their family estate in Sussex. The Austen classic has been adapted for the big screen numerous times, though the most notable one being the 1995 film starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, which was both a critical and commercial hit.
Disney’s survival thriller “Whalefall” took the No. 4 spot on Friday with $3 million from 2,065 locations. Rival estimates expect the survival thriller to bring in $7 million by Sunday. Directed by Brian Duffield, “Whalefall” follows a scuba diver (Austin Abrams) who is swallowed by a sperm whale and has only one hour of oxygen left in his tank as he figures out how to escape.
Finally, in fifth was Universal’s “Other Mommy.” The supernatural horror grossed $2.5 million on Friday and should pull in another $7.85 million by Sunday, bringing its cumulative gross to $44.35 million.
Based on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel “Incidents Around the House,” the horror film follows a paranormal entity that takes on the appearance of a young girl’s mother and begins haunting their home. Chastain plays Ursula, the real mom, but also the titular “Other Mommy,” a terrifying entity who looks identical to Ursula.
