Woman, 23, facing death by firing squad ‘suffering terribly’ in horrific conditions in Dubai jail

A 23-year-old influencer charged with murder and held in a notorious Dubai detention centre has been banned from calling home, her concerned family has claimed.

Brooke George, who hails from Kent, could be executed by a firing squad if she is convicted of murdering a man she met online, William Treeby, 26, in June this year.

She claims that she acted in self-defence after he allegedly attacked her – and since being arrested at the airport while trying to flee back to the UK, she has been locked up at an infamous detention centre.

According to advocacy group Detained in Dubai, George’s loved ones have expressed serious concerns about the conditions she is being kept in at the notorious Bur Dubai police detention centre.

The content creator – known for sharing beauty routines and lip-syncing videos on social media – is said to be sleep-deprived and has now reportedly been forbidden from making international phone calls.

During the very brief communication she has had recently with her mother Tess, George complained that bright lights remain on in every room around the clock, leaving her unable to sleep.

The mum has said she is becoming increasingly ‘worried about her mental state‘ after George’s trial was adjourned until 28 October last week, meaning she will have to endure at least another few weeks at the detention centre.

Detained in Dubai said that the facility was ‘never designed for long-term habitation’ in its latest update on George’s case, adding: “British citizens who were locked up there for only hours during the Iran strikes were terrified at the thought of spending days there, let alone months.”

The latest update on George’s trial

George was arrested at Dubai International Airport in June and taken into custody and charged with murder after Treeby was fatally stabbed.

This is a crime that can carry the death penalty in the UAE – meaning she could be executed by a firing squad.

The young woman met Treeby online, according to reports, before the pair developed a relationship which led to her flying out to Dubai to meet him.

But on her second visit to the holiday hotspot, she claims Treeby became controlling and exhibited abusive behaviour.

After an argument between them allegedly turned violent, George reached for a kitchen knife in what she claims was an act of self-defence.

Her latest court hearing took place last Wednesday (8 October), but Detained in Dubai said that prosecution witnesses who had been summoned to attend did not turn up. As a result, her trial was adjourned until 28 October.

The court ordered her continued detention while it awaits evidence from the remaining witnesses.

George’s prolonged stay at the Bur Dubai police detention centre has taken a significant toll on her mental state, according to her relatives.

Her mother Tess told Detained in Dubai that as well as the lights remaining on constantly, the cries of babies and children nearby also make it difficult to sleep.

George was reportedly told she would receive medication to aid her sleep, but campaigners say she has still not been given any – while her contact with the outside world is allegedly being restricted.

“She can’t sleep,” Tess said. “She can barely call home. I’m getting very worried about her mental state.”

Tess alleges that the recent calls she had with her daughter were ‘cut off after approximately two minutes’ and that the 23-year-old ‘has now been told she cannot make international calls’.

Brit, 23, is ‘suffering terribly’ behind bars

The founder of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, said that George is ‘suffering terribly’ at the detention centre and is becoming ‘increasingly upset’.

“Her mother is left wondering how much worse things will become before she hears her daughter’s voice again,” she explained. “Two minutes on the telephone, followed by an abrupt disconnection, is distressing for everyone involved.

“For Brooke, those calls are a lifeline. For her family, they are the only opportunity to hear how she is coping and offer some reassurance.”

Amid the delay in George’s trial, Stirling has called for the concerns around the Brit’s wellbeing to be ‘addressed now’, adding: “Her health cannot be put on hold until the next court hearing.”

The campaign group said it is working to secure her access to medical care, sleep medication where clinically appropriate, and reliable telephone contact with her family.

“We will do everything we can to help,” Stirling said. “Brooke needs to know she has not been forgotten. Her family needs to be able to speak to her, and her worsening distress needs proper medical attention.

“Whatever the allegations, she is entitled to humane treatment while her case is heard.”

Teen who refused to go to college now earns over £750,000 a year and works with celebrity investors

For most teenagers, the most important thing in their lives is hanging out with friends and surviving school.

But for budding entrepreneur Harrison Nott, his goals have always been in the world of business.

After completing his GCSEs, the 16-year-old decided against going to college to pursue his business dreams full time.

A pretty bold move for a teenager to make – until you factor in that Nott is the owner of CoolTowel, a business backed by Rio Ferdinand.

“It just changed my whole life.”

Nott originally came up with the idea at the age of 13, after scouring the market to find a cooling towel and coming up short.

Spotting a gap in the market, Nott came up with CoolTowel, a specially engineered towel which is designed to evaporate heat alongside moisture.

CoolTowel has made £750,000 in revenue this year (SWNS)

Which is certainly something that would’ve been handy to have during the many heatwaves of 2026.

After coming up with the idea, Nott was able to secure funding after winning the Alibaba.com CoCreate Pitch competition earlier this year, beating 15,000 entrepreneurs from across the globe and taking home £150,000.

The cash wasn’t the only prize which Nott walked away with, as his invention had also caught the eye of footy ace Ferdinand.

“At that moment it was a bit of a blur. I couldn’t believe Rio Ferdinand had taken my number,” Nott recalled.

“This was during my GCSEs, so it was a lot of emotions at once. I was a bit overwhelmed really. I was very excited and optimistic for how he could help.

“Having that name backing the business is quite a significant thing so it was a no-brainer when he offered to spend his time on it.”

Nott now sells his towels through online retailers such as TikTok Shop and Shopify, securing 80,000 sales so far this year.

“He truly wants to support me more than just to make money from the business," Harrison said of his celebrity backer. "He is helping loads of young people." (SWNS)

“He truly wants to support me more than just to make money from the business,” Harrison said of his celebrity backer. “He is helping loads of young people.” (SWNS)

He was also flown out to Los Angeles to pitch his creation, mingling with the likes of James Corden and former Manchester United star Javier Hernández, which certainly sounds better than studying for your A levels.

The success of the business also saw Nott decide against pursuing further education, deciding instead to dedicate himself full-time to a business which has generated revenue of over £750,000.

“It is strange,” Nott said of the decision. “All of my friends are going to college and seeing each other, and I am on a different path, which was a bit sad, but it was a sacrifice that had to be made.”

Growing the business hasn’t been without its issues either, as Nott has faced a number of issues when it came to scaling his business. After selling out of all of his stock in just two days, Nott decided to open a pre-order system, but closed it down as cancelled pre-orders could threaten the business.

There were also issues with the pre-orders on TikTok Shop, which stopped them from selling for a couple of months.

Despite some setbacks, Harrison is determined to make the brand a success (SWNS)

Nott was also targeted by scammers who copied his ideas, with one brand even getting 20,000 orders off the back of his idea.

He has yet to see a profit from the business, with advertising campaigns and affiliate commissions also eating into the £750,000.

Despite the setbacks, Nott is positive that he’ll soon be able to turn a profit from the business.

“The future is looking a bit brighter. We have got big plans,” he added. “It is not just a business in my bedroom anymore, it is a brand that is helping people properly.

“It isn’t physical cash in bank yet, but I have got a lot of stock and assets. If we keep going, we should break even.”

Britney Spears Drops Previously Unreleased Justin Timberlake Collaboration, ‘She’ll Never Be Me’

Britney Spears has posted a previously unreleased collaboration with Justin Timberlake titled “She’ll Never Be Me,” originally recorded for her 2001 album “Britney,” as a preview of the album’s 25 th anniversary edition, out on Nov. 6. Spears and Timberlake, who were dating at the time, were joined by songwriters and producers Bradley Daymond and Alex Greggs, longtime ‘NSYNC collaborators who work under the name Riprock ‘n’ Alex G.

The song was released in an unusually low-key fashion, without a notice on her website or social media accounts beyond a reel on her Facebook page, or a press release from her longtime label, RCA. This may be a reflection of the fact that Spears essentially announced her retirement in 2024.

The Facebook post notes that “She’ll Never Be Me” is one of five previously unreleased tracks on the anniversary edition, which also include “Am I a Sinner,” “When I Say So,” “My Big Secret” and a full version of “Right Now (Taste the Victory),” which was used in a 2002 Pepsi commercial.

While the songs are over 25 years old, they represent the first new recordings released by Spears since her 2023 collaboration with Will.I.Am, “Mind Your Business” (which was assembled from older recordings).

Spears said in 2024 that she will “never return to the music industry” and in January said that she will never perform in the U.S. again. The singer was released from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021, regaining full control over her personal life and finances. She has largely kept a low public profile since then, although she occasionally statements and videos of herself dancing that have made some observers concerned about her wellbeing.

In May, Spears pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and avoided jail time. Spears was initially arrested on March 4 in Ventura County, California. The California Highway Patrol made the arrest around 9:30 p.m. and she was booked early the next morning around 3 a.m. Five weeks after her arrest, Spears voluntarily checked into a treatment center but checked out of the facility last week, just days before her arraignment.

  • Difference between vape smoke and cigarette smoke as doctor explains which is worse

Difference between vape smoke and cigarette smoke as doctor explains which is worse

Experts have highlighted the difference between smoking tobacco and vaping as a doctor explains which one is worse.

The health risks associated with smoking have been well documented by decades’ worth of medical studies, linking smoking tobacco to cancer, heart disease, as well as a whole host of other health conditions and heightened risks.

Vaping is growing in popularity as a habit in its own right, and while there is still a need for further study on its precise health impacts some evidence already points to the habit coming with health risks.

Dr Rayyan Zafar explained that while both smoking and vaping are bad for you, smoking tobacco is still much worse, whether it’s cigarettes, cigars, or if you somehow manage to sustain smoking a pipe in 2026.

NHS guidance suggests that vaping can be useful as a way for someone who already smokes tobacco to reduce the harm done to them as a result, but if you do not already smoke then the advice is to not take up vaping as while it has not been shown to be as harmful as tobacco, it is still not safe.

The prevalence of vaping and smoking (LADBible)

The prevalence of vaping and smoking (LADBible)

Michael Joseph Blaha is the director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, and shared how there is still a risk with vaping.

“People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health,” said Blaha.

But what exactly are the differences between vaping and smoking tobacco?

The health risks associated with tobacco smoke, which contains thousands of harmful chemicals, are well understood.

While the risks with vaping need to be studied further, Blaha warned there is already evidence of a link between

“Emerging data suggests links to chronic lung disease and asthma, as well as associations between dual use of e-cigarettes and smoking with cardiovascular disease. You’re exposing yourself to all kinds of chemicals that we don’t yet understand and that are probably not safe.”

Smoking tobacco is worse, but neither is good for you (LADBible)

However there is one factor where cigarettes are the same – they both contain nicotine.

And Blaha warned that while vapes are not as closely understood as tobacco, people who use e-cigarettes may be taking in a higher quantity of nicotine than they would be if they were smoking tobacco.

For example, people can buy cartridges with a higher strength than regular ones, or they can turn up the voltage on the e-cigarette to give them a bigger hit from the vape.

And although NHS guidance suggests that vaping can be a way to reduce harm from smoking tobacco, Blaha expressed concern about people who are taking vaping as a habit in itself, and who don’t already smoke.

“What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would’ve never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit,” said Blaha.

“It’s one thing if you convert from cigarette smoking to vaping. It’s quite another thing to start up nicotine use with vaping. And, getting hooked on nicotine often leads to using traditional tobacco products down the road.”

  • How Supernatural-Napoleonic Wars Story ‘Valor Mortis’ Became Lyrical Games’ First Release: ‘A Setting Nobody Else Is Touching’

How Supernatural-Napoleonic Wars Story ‘Valor Mortis’ Became Lyrical Games’ First Release: ‘A Setting Nobody Else Is Touching’

Lyrical Games will make its market debut this week with the launch of Soulslike game “Valor Mortis.”

Set in a supernatural reimagining of 19th-century Europe, “Valor Mortis” lets players take on the part of William Dowsett (voiced by James Alexander), a resurrected English soldier of the Grande Armée who wields both Napoleonic-era weaponry and devastating supernatural powers. The game also stars Vincent Cassel as the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte and Jennifer English as The Shrike, a key figure in the resistance to Napoleon’s war.

Developed by “Ghostrunner” studio One More Level, “Valor Mortis” is the first of multiple titles in the works at the Lyrical Media’s indie video game publisher and the game’s ambitious first-person take is setting a high bar for what Lyrical plans to produce from here.

“One More Level specializes in first-person action, so they understood the problem better than anyone,” Lyrical Games chief Blake Rochkind tells Variety. “The core challenge is that Soulslikes are built on reading your opponent: spacing, telegraphs, knowing exactly where you are relative to an enemy’s swing. A third-person camera gives you that for free. In first-person, you lose a lot of that awareness, so the team had to rebuild it. They spent an enormous amount of time on the parry window specifically, plus lock-on, audio cues and hit feedback, so a perfect parry feels as readable as it does in a third-person game. The other hurdle was pace. Ghostrunner is all about speed, and Valor Mortis is deliberately slower and more methodical.”

“Valor Mortis” launches Tuesday for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and for PC via Steam priced at $39.99. Notably, the title will be available on Day 1 for those with an Xbox Game Pass subscription, though Rochkind declined to share details about striking that deal while still making the game available for purchase across platforms.

See below for more from Variety’s interview with Lyrical Games’ Rochkind below.

What made you feel confident in Lyrical picking this unconventional take as one of its first publishing deals? What do you want this project to say about the direction Lyrical plans to go in?

I knew I wanted to work One More Level within five minutes of playing Ghostrunner when it released in 2020. Strong game-feel is the rarest talent in this medium, and when you play something with truly great game-feel (and you play a lot of games), you know it immediately. It took a while for the stars to align, since they made Ghostrunner 2 before being ready to tackle this. The pitch for Valor Mortis checked every box. You had a proven team with a unique specialization, working in a genre with a huge audience, but with two real twists: a first-person camera and a setting nobody else is touching. That’s Lyrical Games’ thesis in a nutshell: midtier budgets, unique takes on proven genres and genuine partnership with developers. If this game says one thing about us, I hope it’s that we’ll push our chips in on talented teams with a strong point of view.

What was the casting process like and how much did the team prioritize landing big-name talent?

After the announcement of the game went well, we realized we had something here, so it was a question of how we can pour gasoline on the fire. Vincent Cassel was truly the dream casting for Napoleon. He’s not on screen the way a typical character is. He’s a voice in William’s head, speaking to him almost like a father to a son. That role lives or dies on presence, and Vincent Cassel has a kind of controlled menace that’s hard to find. Landing him was a big moment for us. Similar with Jennifer English. We had a very meaty role in The Shrike, and she was the only name on the list for us. It helped in both cases that the game’s announcement had gone well enough that we had some stature to reach out to both. Finally, James Alexander carries the whole game as William and I hope this will put him on the map even more than he already is. For a new IP, a cast like that tells players we’re taking the story as seriously as the combat.

What inspired the team’s interest in a supernatural, cosmic horror version of the Napoleonic Wars for the setting?

That’s OML’s vision, and it’s one of the things that sold me on the game. Fantasy Soulslikes are everywhere, so the setting immediately made it stand out. The Napoleonic era is also a natural fit for horror. You have this charismatic figure promising a unified Europe, and millions of soldiers who believed in that idea and died for it. Layering a plague and body horror on top of that lets the game ask a pretty dark question: what would you sacrifice for power, and for someone else’s dream? It’s a period most players know in broad strokes, which makes twisting it that much more unsettling. It’s also simply iconic, which has gone a long way in people’s interest.

How would you describe the journey William Dowsett sets out on and how his resurrection carries players through the narrative?

William is a young Englishman who’s disillusioned with the monarchy and volunteers for Napoleon because he believes in the idea of a unified Europe. Then he dies for it. The game opens with him waking on a battlefield with the plague running through his veins, though not fully “turned.” That corruption is both his curse and his power. It’s how he fights, and it gets stronger as he absorbs what he defeats. Napoleon is in his head guiding him, and partway through, another voice joins that pulls him somewhere else entirely. So the journey is really about whose cause William is fighting for, and what’s left of him by the end.

Were there any significant changes made to the game following the Steam demo feedback?

We did an early public playtest shortly after announcing in August 2025. That was a massive boon to the game and significantly influenced One More Level’s development from there. The Next Fest demo this summer was just a few months before launch, and of course One More Level took a lot away from that as well, but the playtest was just transformative for the game and we’re so grateful that so many players have stuck with the game for over a year since then and have helped make the game what it is today. It’s definitely an approach we hope to do again with our games in the future.

CFTC Draws the Line Between Prediction Markets and Gambling in New Rules

    In brief

    • The CFTC issued two measures Friday: a proposed rule expanding the “swap” definition to include event contracts , and an interim final rule excluding casino-style gambling like sportsbooks and casino games.
    • Chairman Michael Selig said event contracts are “commodity derivatives squarely within the CFTC’s regulatory remit” and under its “exclusive jurisdiction,” while “casino-style gambling products are not derivatives.”
    • The rules formalize proposals sent to the White House last month, as the agency asserts authority amid state lawsuits and a Supreme Court fight.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is pressing its claim over prediction markets, issuing a pair of measures Friday that would formally define event contracts as “swaps” under federal law while carving out traditional gambling.

The first, a proposed rule opened for public comment, would expressly expand the definition of “swap” to include event contracts, including those tied to sports, politics, cultural events and weather.

The CFTC said the contracts are financial instruments “commonly known to the trade as swaps” and that the move resolves any ambiguity about their status. “These products are commodity derivatives squarely within the CFTC’s regulatory remit under the Commodity Exchange Act and are within the agency’s exclusive jurisdiction,” Chairman Michael Selig said in a statement.

The second, an interim final rule effective immediately upon publication, draws the opposite line, codifying the agency’s longstanding view that casino-style gambling products, including sportsbook wagers and casino games, are excluded from the swap definition.

“Casino-style gambling products are not derivatives,” Selig said, framing the step as clarifying “the limits of its regulatory remit.” Both measures carry 30-day comment windows.

Together, the two rules sharpen a distinction at the heart of a fierce jurisdictional fight: if event contracts are swaps, they fall under the CFTC’s authority, which Selig has argued is exclusive, placing platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket beyond the reach of state gambling regulators. Multiple states have sued prediction-market operators alleging illegal gambling, and the CFTC has countersued to defend its turf.

The filings formalize proposals the agency sent to the White House for review late last month, part of a broader push that has seen the CFTC assert its authority rather than wait on Congress.

The agency has broadly taken a pro-industry approach toward both traditional and cryptocurrency markets. The Commission recently issued no-action relief letting crypto apps offer regulated derivatives and sent separate crypto-markets rulemakings forward.

The legal stakes for prediction markets are climbing. A court split over whether event contracts qualify as federally regulated swaps, pitting the NFL and others against Kalshi, has drawn the Supreme Court’s attention, meaning the question the CFTC is now trying to settle in regulation may ultimately be decided by the justices.

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler‘s “Miami Vice ’85” reboot has dropped its first look at the two stars in character as filming has started.

Jordan is Ricardo Tubbs and Butler is Sonny Crockett in the reboot, based on the popular ’80s detective show that ran from 1984 to 1989. In the original series, Don Johnson starred as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas was Tubbs. The two characters are police detectives who work undercover in Miami, Florida.

The “Miami Vice ’85” cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who recently helmed “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” and it will arrive in theaters on May 19, 2028.

The reboot will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Dan Gilroy wrote the script, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the TV series. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. Dylan Clark and Kosinski serve as producers on the film. Executive VP of production development Sara Scott and creative executive of production development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for Universal.

After winning best actor last year for “Sinners,” Jordan will next star in “The Thomas Crown Affair” opposite Adria Arjona, which he also directed. Butler’s next film is A24’s “Enemies,” co-starring Jeremy Allen White.

The Big Question in Bitcoin: Could BTC Bottom Out in October? CryptoQuant Analyst Answers! Here Are the Details

However, according to the analyst, even though market conditions are beginning to recover, a sustained uptrend requires regular capital inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs and a strengthening of buying activity in the US spot market to be confirmed.

On-Chain Data Giving a Bottoming Signal!

The analyst also considers the improvement in macroeconomic conditions among the possible signals of a bottoming out. At this point, market expectations regarding the probability of a Fed interest rate hike in October have fallen to approximately 18%, and Brent oil prices have dropped from levels close to $110 per barrel to around $103.

In addition, the analyst cited changes in three on-chain indicators as bottoming signals. According to the analyst, the first indicator shows that Bitcoin holdings on exchanges have recently recovered but remain at a low level. Second, ‘Apparent Demand,’ which indicates new demand for Bitcoin, has also rapidly recovered from a significantly negative level. Third, the amount of Bitcoin held by whales has also increased. It was stated that the Bitcoin holdings of large investors have reached approximately 3 million $BTC and maintained a high level even during the recent price correction.

According to the analyst, these indicators suggest that conditions are improving for a bottom formation in Bitcoin. However, a definitive bottom confirmation requires sustained ETF inflows, strengthening buying in the US spot market, and continued demand recovery.

    There’s a Possibility of Correction!

The analyst noted that while October historically stands out for its bullish expectations, a potential rise in October doesn’t necessarily have to be uninterrupted.

The analyst says that current data suggests a correction could pave the way for a new uptrend. However, confirmation of strengthening market demand is needed to say that Bitcoin has formed a permanent bottom.

“…The October rally doesn’t necessarily mean uninterrupted gains. A correction could lay the groundwork for the next rally.”

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Calls for an AI ‘Emergency Brake’

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been quieter than his counterparts in recent weeks as the heads of Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other leaders discuss the risks of artificial intelligence. Now, Nadella is calling for change across the industry.

In a post published on X, Nadella outlined his belief that it’s time to introduce what he calls an “emergency brake” for AI developers to pull in the event of further problematic incidents.

“We must assume a model is compromised and contain it from the start,” Nadella said. “An authorized person should always be able to pause or shut down a model mid-task.”

“We can’t treat Super Intelligence as a set of nested black boxes and simply accept or reject its recommendations, answers, and actions.” He used the term “Super Intelligence” throughout the post, following new style guidelines set out by President Trump late last month.

The post also explains how Nadella believes there should be controls and auditing tools, handled by a model’s creators. He said, “No single model should control both a system’s behavior and the evidence required to determine whether that behavior is aligned with the original intent.”

Nadella says the AI industry needs a system to ensure timely disclosure when models “fail or are compromised.” Nadella’s vision would enable firms to communicate more effectively about issues, ensuring that any failures yield lessons that could be applied industry-wide.

    Recommended by Our Editors

As Nadella has waited longer than his rivals to comment in full, many more incidents of models going rogue have been reported. One such issue happened earlier this year, when an OpenAI agent accessed an Australian government website.

The initial call to action from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei came in early September, with the rest of the month and October seeing a growing number of reports where AI models breached third-party systems. As sentiment toward agentic AI shifts, many CEOs are seizing the opportunity to better align their brands with safety guidelines.
