Hackers Are Abusing a macOS Screen Sharing Flaw to Secretly Mine Monero

    In brief

    • The Netherlands’ NCSC warned of active exploitation of a macOS Screen Sharing vulnerability across systems with port 5900 exposed to the internet, where attackers gained root access and installed Monero mining programs.
    • The flaw stems from faulty state management during authentication, letting network attackers log in without valid credentials
    • The cryptojacking campaign—which quietly mines privacy coin Monero on victims’ hardware—joins a wave of similar schemes.

Attackers have been exploiting a vulnerability in Apple’s macOS Screen Sharing feature to seize control of Macs and quietly install cryptocurrency miners, the Netherlands’ national cyber agency warned this week.

In an updated advisory, the Dutch National Cyber Security Center, or NCSC, said it received reports of active exploitation across multiple systems that had port 5900, used by Screen Sharing, exposed to the internet.

Myriad: When will OpenAI release GPT-6? Click to make your prediction.

In each case, the attackers gained root access, the highest level of control over a machine, and planted a Monero mining program to harness the victim’s hardware. Monero is a so-called privacy coin, a type of cryptocurrency that cannot be easily traced, unlike transparent networks such as Bitcoin or Ethereum. The agency flagged that public proof-of-concept code for the flaw is now circulating, lowering the bar for would-be attackers.

The bug, tracked as CVE-2026-65400 and rated 7.1 out of 10 in severity, is an authentication flaw rooted in faulty state management during the login process. It let network-based attackers slip through without valid credentials, accepting authentication attempts that should have been rejected.

Apple has since patched the issue, tightening its validation checks in macOS Sequoia 15.7.9, Sonoma 14.8.9 and Tahoe 26.6.1. Users who haven’t updated, particularly anyone with Screen Sharing reachable from the open internet, remain exposed.

Monero has long been the coin of choice for so-called cryptojacking, in which hijacked machines mine crypto for an attacker who pockets the rewards while the victim absorbs the electricity costs and degraded performance. The token’s privacy features make the proceeds far harder to trace than Bitcoin.

The campaign is the latest in a steady stream of schemes turning other people’s devices into crypto profit.

Just this month, Bitdefender found pirated copies of “The Odyssey” laced with the wallet-draining Lumma Stealer. Decrypt has also reported on malware pushed through fake CAPTCHA pages routed via BNB Chain, the SparkKitty operation that hid wallet-stealing code in mobile apps, malicious “anime girl” wallpapers aimed at Steam gamers, and crypto-stealing code smuggled into a booby-trapped Python library.

The NCSC suggests users apply Apple’s updates promptly and avoid leaving Screen Sharing accessible from the internet, which gave attackers their opening in the first place.

  • NEAR AI Adds Independent Verification

    NEAR AI Adds Independent Verification

$NEAR AI Cloud has integrated Intel Trust Authority, adding independent verification to its confidential AI inference infrastructure. The service allows customers to receive an Intel-signed attestation token confirming that their workloads are running inside a genuine Intel TDX trusted execution environment.

$NEAR AI Cloud uses Intel TDX to isolate AI workloads in confidential virtual machines. Their memory is encrypted and protected from the host operating system, hypervisor, and infrastructure operator. $NEAR AI already validates the hardware attestation and makes the underlying evidence available for inspection.

The new integration adds a separate verification layer. Intel Trust Authority checks the cryptographic signatures and compares the trusted computing base with Intel’s reference values and policies. It then issues a signed JWT containing the verification result.

$NEAR AI Cloud is a platform for private AI inference and agents. Intel develops hardware and security technologies for confidential computing and enterprise infrastructure. Intel Trust Authority provides independent attestation services for confidential computing environments.

The verification token can be used by other systems to control access to protected workloads. For example, key management and security platforms can require a valid token before releasing sensitive data or encryption keys. This also gives enterprises third-party evidence that can be used in security and compliance processes.

$NEAR AI Cloud already serves organizations including Brave, Venice AI, Abound, the Government of Bermuda, OpenMind and Corbits.

  • Zebec Adds Rewards to Payroll Balances

Zebec Adds Rewards to Payroll Balances

Zebec Network, an onchain payroll and payments platform, has partnered with Solstice Finance, an institutional yield protocol on Solana, to introduce $USX across its payroll infrastructure. The integration will allow companies to earn rewards on payroll funds held before they are paid out.

Companies usually add funds to their payroll balances before payday, leaving the money unused until payments are processed. With $USX, these prefunded balances can earn rewards through Solstice’s programme during this period. Employees will continue to receive their pay through Zebec without changing how they use the service.

$USX can also be received directly through a Zebec debit card. Users can spend the balance in the real world or withdraw it to a wallet when needed, while one $USX is treated as one dollar for spending.

  • Another Manipulation Alert in the Cryptocurrency Market! Analyst Points to 4 Altcoins! Here Are the Details

Another Manipulation Alert in the Cryptocurrency Market! Analyst Points to 4 Altcoins! Here Are the Details

As allegations of manipulation in the cryptocurrency market resurface, on-chain analyst EmberCN made some noteworthy statements.

At this point, an important warning came from the analyst regarding the altcoins SIREN, $AKE, $XPIN, and BTR.

EmberCN stated that it examined the wallet addresses associated with the altcoins in question and detected suspicious signs indicating that the same active market maker played a role in the price movements of the four tokens. According to the analyst, all of these tokens experienced sharp increases exceeding tenfold.

$AKE, SIREN, $XPIN, and BTR are on the list!

One of the tokens that EmberCN particularly highlighted was $AKE. According to the analyst, after experiencing a sharp drop of approximately 60% at the beginning of July and a large number of leveraged investors exiting the market, $AKE gained approximately 52 times its value in the following month.

Noting that this rise is remarkable, the analyst suggests that this movement in $AKE is linked to a suspicious market maker.

In this context, the analyst notes that there are linked addresses indicating that the suspicious market maker traded not only on $AKE but also on SIREN, $XPIN, and BTR.

The analyst noted that these four altcoins have in common a history of experiencing controlled price increases exceeding tenfold.

The analyst also noted that some of the addresses associated with $AKE had previously been used in SIREN transactions and most recently in the transfer of $XPIN to Binance Alpha.

EmberCN concludes by stating that their findings regarding these altcoins are not definitive, but merely suspicions. The analyst notes that on-chain address relationships and price movements raise suspicions of manipulation.

  • ChatGPT’s Google Drive Plugin Now Lets You Edit, Save Files Directly from Chat

ChatGPT’s Google Drive Plugin Now Lets You Edit, Save Files Directly from Chat

OpenAI boosted ChatGPT’s Google Drive plug-in last week with a new capability that lets the chatbot access and edit Drive files and folders within the chatbot window.

The update began rolling out on Aug. 13 and is available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Business subscribers on the web. At launch, the feature will support files and folders in My Drive as well as those shared directly with you, OpenAI says in its release notes.

To get started, select Plugins from the left-side panel in ChatGPT and ensure the Google Drive plug-in is installed. After that, you can browse all your supported Drive files from ChatGPT’s Library and add them to any chat using @mentions or by selecting the plus (+) button in the prompt box and selecting Add from Library.

Once you open your files in chat, you can ask ChatGPT “to summarize, analyze, compare, or create something new from them,” OpenAI says. An X user shared an image of the resulting interface, and it shows a prompt box appearing below a Google Docs file.

If you grant necessary permissions, all edits you make from this window will be saved automatically to the original source file in Drive. The updated feature also allows you to select a folder and ask ChatGPT to apply changes to all the files it contains.

Google already has its own Gemini AI features available in Drive. OpenAI’s new capabilities just give Drive users who prefer ChatGPT an additional AI assistant to work with.

For now, ChatGPT’s Google Drive updates are only available to paying users on the web. Support for mobile apps “will follow,” OpenAI said without specifying a timeline.

  • Diane Kruger, Tim Roth, Danny Boon Join Netflix Nazi Hunter Drama ‘Project K’

Diane Kruger, Tim Roth, Danny Boon Join Netflix Nazi Hunter Drama ‘Project K’

Diane Kruger and Dany Boon will star as Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, the German-Jewish couple who tracked down former Gestapo officer Klaus Barbie, in Projet K (working title), the new film from Netflix France, the streamer announced Monday.

Tim Roth will play Barbie in the drama, from French director Yvan Attal (The Accusation, Breaking Point). Attal co-wrote the screenplay together with Laurent Turner, who is known for his work on French Netflix crime series Ganglands.

Projet K follows Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, a German woman and a French Jewish man, whose relationship and shared commitment to justice led them to pursue Barbie, the notorious “Butcher of Lyon” for more than a decade, fighting multiple governments and institutions along the way.

Serge (Boon), born in Bucharest in 1935 to a Jewish family that relocated to France before World War II, survived a roundup of Jews in Nice as a child. His father was later arrested and killed at Auschwitz. Beate (Kruger), born in Berlin in 1939, was the daughter of a Wehrmacht soldier. The couple married in 1963 and become known as Nazi hunters, tracking down former Nazi officials and Vichy collaborators, including Kurt Lischka, Ernst Ehlers, Kurt Asche and Maurice Papon, in addition to Barbie.

Barbie (Roth) served as head of the Gestapo in Lyon during the German occupation of France, where he was responsible for the deportation and torture of thousands of people, including the roundup of Jewish children from a safe house.

After the war, he worked for United States intelligence services before relocating to Bolivia under the alias Klaus Altmann. The Klarsfelds identified Barbie’s location and alias in 1971 and campaigned for his extradition. Despite state opposition, including from the Bolivian government at the time, Barbie was extradited to France in 1983, and stood trial in Lyon. Convicted of crimes against humanity, he was sentenced to life in prison, where he died in 1991.

Barbie reign of terror in Lyon was the focus of Moulin, the Cannes competition film from Son of Saul director László Nemes, with Lars Eidinger playing the Butcher of Lyon and Gilles Lellouche as French Resistance hero Jean Moulin.

The Klarsfelds’ pursuit of Barbie was previously dramatized in the 2008 Canal+ television film La Traque, directed by Laurent Jaoui, in which Attal played Serge Klarsfeld opposite Franka Potente as Beate Klarsfeld.

Attal wrote, directed and starred in Breaking Point (2023) and was the co-writer and director of The Accusation (2021), an adaptation of Karine Tuil’s novel about a rape accusation and its aftermath, which premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2021.

Kruger is coming off a starring turn in Fatih Akin post-WW2 drama Amrum, which premiered in Cannes last year, and roles in Paramount+ drama Little Disasters and HBO Max’s Dangerous Liaisons prequel series The Seduction.

Boon, best known for writing, directing and starring in 2008 French box office smash Welcome to the Sticks, had a starring turn in Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud’s dramedy Regarde, released in French theaters last year.

Oscar-nominee Roth was most recently see opposite Cillian Murphy in Tom Harper’s Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man feature for Netflix.

Attal is producing Projet K through his Films Sous Influence outfit, together with NAC Films’ Antoine Pezet and Jérôme Corcos. The film will be shot in France, Bolivia and Belgium.

Rosie O’Donnell, Viola Davis Pay Tribute to Hayden Panettiere: “Heartbroken”

Following the sudden death of Hayden Panettiere, fellow industry notables are taking to social media to pay tribute to the actress.

Panettiere’s rep told ABC News on Sunday that she died at age 36. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the rep wrote in a statement. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.” Her cause of death wasn’t immediately available.

Panettiere, who got candid about her postpartum depression and alcohol and opioid addiction in her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning earlier this year, was best known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville, the Scream franchise, Bring It on: All or Nothing and dozens of other projects.

Viola Davis, Melissa Barrera, Rosie O’Donnell and David Arquette are among those sharing heartfelt messages to remember Panettiere.

  • ‘Supporting Role’ Review: Dato Bakhtadze Captivates in a Nocturnal Odyssey Through Tbilisi

‘Supporting Role’ Review: Dato Bakhtadze Captivates in a Nocturnal Odyssey Through Tbilisi

A nocturnal odyssey through the spectral streets of Tbilisi is conjured with mesmerizing effect in Georgian writer-director Ana Urushadze’s “Supporting Role.” On the heavy heels of Niaz (Dato Bakhtadze), a lumbering Georgian movie star whose glory days are behind him, Urushadze’s second feature plays like an old-school Jim Jarmusch joint — all existential wandering and weird, winding conversations — but with a distinctly post-Soviet gallows humor. Having won a Special Jury award and the FIPRESCI prize at Rotterdam in January, the film now lands in the main competition at Sarajevo.

This mordant melange takes off from the opening sequence, when Niaz finds himself at a casting call for an indie directed by Aza (Elene Mausuradze), an androgynous female director with the pallid look of a Tim Burton extra. Winking back to Bakhtadze’s stints in Hollywood (“Wanted,” “Extraction 2”), Niaz is used to playing brawny leading men and taking direction from male auteurs. So he’s silent and slackjawed when “this tiny weird creature,” as he describes Aza, confidently pitches him a tragic one-scene role with no script — only a hand-drawn storyboard, the sole copy of which she lends him when he asks for three days to consider. So ensues a period of delirious soul-searching, given tremendous gravitas by Bakhtadze.

The film follows Niaz as he drifts through depopulated streets and former haunts like a dizzied mastiff. With a meandering rhythm, he encounters characters from his past, fans and random eccentrics who sweep him into their homes and vehicles as quickly as he slips away. Among them are an Armenian duo with whom Niaz goes to the spa; a few former lovers, including a statuesque makeup artist and a veiled actress; and a crowd of colleagues attending the wake of a veteran critic whose final unpublished work is an exhaustive study of Niaz’s career.

Too driven a character study to be the kind of trancelike reverie you might float in and out of sleep from, the film nevertheless challenges with an 139-minute runtime — a length that induces a dreamworld immersion. The film’s trippy side keeps Niaz’s reckoning from drowning in male sorrow, while the measured use of a jazzy, bass-heavy refrain by composer Sten Sheripov accents this wry romanticism.

Urushadze, to her great credit, employs surrealism with a delicate touch: a special herb that Niaz picks from the side of the road reappears later in the film when he turns out his pockets during a tender meeting with his former partner; a finger doodle traced on a fogged-up window resurfaces like a bout of déjà vu. An avatar for Urushadze, who based “Supporting Role” on an experience she had making her debut feature “Scary Mother” (which won Locarno’s Best First Feature award in 2017), Aza justifies her lack of a script by claiming that the visuals are most important. Urushadze agrees, complementing the film’s shadowy Tbilisi nightscape with bursts of jewel color: a turquoise bird, a room bathed in purple light, a bone-white body against midnight blue sheets.

Disheveled and brutish, Niaz is routinely greeted by his peers with wariness and surprise, his star faded by what is heavily suggested to be his own doing. But if the idea of Aza’s film triggers Niaz’s mourning over the death of his career — which is tied up with his old self — it also forces him to consider a new act, and perhaps the necessity of change in a world that’s beginning to shed its tolerance for the antics of male genius.

Eventually, he becomes obsessed with playing the supporting role. As Niaz searches desperately for a way into the character — at one point shaving an eyebrow, and being whisked away before the second one comes off — he finds the challenge posed by this novel part demands a softness and vulnerability he had long denied both onscreen and off. A sensitively observed meeting with his estranged son crystallizes the film’s ideas about the hazy boundary between performance and real life; we are who we play and those characters can reshape us, a notion that, in Urushadze’s hands, comes with a decent side of hope.
