  • Jim Gilstrap, Singer on ‘Good Times’ Theme and Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” Dies at 70

Jim Gilstrap, Singer on ‘Good Times’ Theme and Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” Dies at 70

James “Jim” Gilstrap, a singer whose credits include the Good Times theme song and Stevie Wonder‘s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” has died. He was 79.

Gilstrap’s nephew and family spokesperson, Geoffrey “Geoff Gil” Gilstrap, said he died Saturday from natural causes.

Gilstrap sang the song for Good Times, which ran from 1974-79, with Blinky Williams. The catchy, gospel-tinged tune (“Keepin’ your head above water/Making a wave when you can”) was composed by Dave Grusin with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

Gilstrap was a featured vocalist with Stevie Wonder’s Wonderlove and contributed to many of the singer’s recordings. He sang the first two lines of Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” (“You are the sunshine of my life/That’s why I’ll always be around”). Singer Lani Groves sang the next two lines (“You are the apple of my eye/Forever you’ll stay in my heart”) before Wonder’s vocals kick in, with Gilstrap and Groves continuing to sing backup. The song, from Wonder’s 1972 album Talking Book, won the Grammy Award for best male pop vocal performance.

Gilstrap also worked on Wonder’s albums Wonderlove and Innervisions

In 1975, he signed a recording contract with Chelsea Records and released a single, “Swing Your Daddy” that reached No. 4 on the U.K. Singles Chart and No. 10 on the  U.S. Billboard Black Singles chart. The song peaked at No. 64 in Australia. He released an album, Love Talk, in 1976.

Throughout his career, Gilstrap also collaborated with Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, The Jacksons, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker,  Whitney Houston, James Ingram, George Benson, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, Dolly Parton, Teddy Pendergrass, Stanley Clarke, Boz Scaggs and others.

“Jim was one of the most respected session vocalists of his generation, bringing his powerful and soulful voice to countless recordings that helped define the sound of popular music,” his nephew said.

Born Nov. 10, 1946, Gilstrap was the last surviving member of a family of 10 siblings. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, and his children.

The GENIUS Act turns 1: State of Crypto

A year on, the rules aren’t quite ready for implementation, but we have a much clearer idea as to how the regulators are thinking about stablecoins and where they’re likely to land on those rules.

In an emailed statement, Crypto Council for Innovation CEO Ji Hun Kim called the passage of the bill “a landmark moment.”

“A year in, agencies, institutions, and innovators are building on a clearer foundation, and stablecoins are moving rapidly toward mainstream adoption,” he said.

The various regulators have proposed rules out for comment on the different aspects of stablecoin governance and regulation, including a proposal that would require stablecoin issuers to conduct similar know-your-customer checks to more traditional financial firms. The FDIC published 144 questions a few months ago about how it would oversee stablecoin issuers, looking at concerns like custody, capital and liquidity standards. The OCC, for its part, put out its own proposal in February laying out how it was interpreting the law.

There’s still a few months left before these rules start being finalized. And in the meantime, the industry is still working on getting the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act passed.

The text of the combined Clarity Act drafts is not yet public, at least as of Friday night. While industry sources expected the bill to be released last week, the timeline has constantly evolved. On Thursday, Senators Cynthia Lummis and Bernie Moreno were supposed to brief Trump on the bill. There was no public readout of that meeting available after, but both lawmakers tweeted about Trump’s remarks on the election later Thursday.

Marc Lamont Hill speaks to Molly Crabapple about the Jewish Bund, anti-Zionism and the Jewish left today.

Today’s the last day to get this price, so don’t wait on this one. Windows 11 Pro is $9.97, down from its $199 MSRP, and the offer closes tonight.

    Upgrades in Windows 11 Pro

    • DirectX 12 Ultimate for ray-traced graphics and higher frame rates

    • Auto HDR, which adds contrast and color even to older games

    • DirectStorage for faster game load times on compatible hardware

Anne Hathaway Says ‘Princess Diaries 3’ Had a ‘Story Breakthrough’ After Having to ‘Start Over’ With the Script: ‘We are Moving in the Right Direction’

Princess Diaries 3” recently had a breakthrough after a scrapped script, Anne Hathaway revealed during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Radio Andy.”

“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make ‘Princess Diaries 3,’” Hathaway said.

“I can say I think we had a story breakthrough,” she added. “I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”

The continuation of “The Princess Diaries” series has been in production since 2022. Adele Lim (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) signed on to direct in 2024.

“We just want to make the story right because it is a franchise that is so beloved by so many people,” Lim told Variety at the Gold Gala carpet in May.

Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, now Queen of Genovia, in the threequel. Lim teased that fans of the original movies can expect “a lot of fun returns” from other cast members.

Lim said in May that the shooting and production schedule were still being worked out, and a release date has yet to be announced.

“The Princess Diaries” was released in 2001 and was followed by the 2004 sequel, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.” The two films have earned a combined $300 million worldwide.

Anne Hathaway Reveals ‘Princess Diaries 3’ Update: “We Had a Story Breakthrough”

Anne Hathaway is sharing a status update on the long-awaited third installment in The Princess Diaries franchise.

The Oscar winner, who played Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 and 2004 films, made a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, where she was asked by host Andy Cohen, “Where are we at on Princess Diaries 3?”

“I’m busy making baby No. 3 and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make Princess Diaries 3,” Hathaway said with a laugh. She announced last month that she’s pregnant with her third child with husband Adam Shulman.

“But I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one,” The Odyssey star added.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported in 2022 that a script was in the works for a third installment. It was later revealed in 2024 that Adele Lim had been tapped to direct the feature.

While details are being kept under wraps, the film is set to be a continuation of the film series, which centers on Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), who finds out that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. At the end of the second installment, Mia is crowned the queen of Genovia single after Parliament abolishes the law requiring that a queen be married first. However, she also finally gets together with Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine) after calling off her wedding to Andrew Jacoby (Callum Blue).

During a chat with THR last month, The Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot shared, “I’m so excited there is a third movie. I read a script, and it was amazing. I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much. I have a problem keeping my mouth shut.”

She also teased, “I’m very happy with what I’ve read so far, but there’s definitely some book things that were involved in the last script I read.”
