‘Big Little Lies’ Sequel Book Teases Storyline for HBO Series’ Season 3: What’s Going on With Madeline, Celeste and Jane in ‘Big Little Truths’

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for “Big Little Truths,” the follow-up novel to “Big Little Lies.”

It all starts with a mysterious finger sent to the school principal.

Liane Moriarty is back with “Big Little Truths,” a book set 10 years after the events of her novel “Big Little Lies,” which was adapted into an Emmy-winning HBO series back in 2017, with a second season in 2019.

While Moriarty has confirmed this book will lay the groundwork for “Big Little Lies” Season 3 (which has yet to be ordered officially by HBO, go into production or set a release date), there are key differences between the world in the books and the show’s universe: the main one being the HBO adaptation is set in Monterey, California and Moriarty’s books are set in the fictional Pirriwee Peninsula in Australia.

Additionally, Moriarty incorporates elements of “Big Little Lies” Season 2, like the introduction of Meryl Streep’s show-only character, Mary-Louise, into “Big Little Truths.”

In the sequel book, which hit shelves on Aug. 25, Moriarty picks up with Madeline (played by Reese Witherspoon on the HBO series), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie’s (Zoë Kravitz) lives as they experience a whirlwind of life changes following a 10-year time jump.

As their 15-year-old kids navigate the complicated emotions that come with being high-school students, the past also comes up like a current, leading the moms to reckon with what they haven’t told their kids about the circumstances under which Celeste’s husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), was killed by Bonnie all those years ago.

Throughout “Big Little Truths,” Moriarty cuts back and forth between the moms’ perspectives and the months leading up to one big event: “D-Day,” which is revealed to be the infamous day on which Jane’s son Ziggy and his classmates give a presentation that reveals the true intentions of their new red-haired history teacher, Melody.

The presentation serves as a wake-up call for the moms as they find out that their new friend Melody has actually been preying on young kids, setting up her brightest students with a job prospect that lands them squarely in the lap of her predator husband, Seth Montclair. And she’s been doing it for years at different schools.

While the book starts off teasing a potential death with the implication of somebody’s finger getting cut off, it turns out that Clara Long, a former student of Melody’s, was the one who sent the finger. In order to get the attention of the school and the community turned toward Melody, the cremation consultant cut off the finger of town local Ewan Drew, who was already dead. In a conversation with Detective Adrian, Clara even goes on to call Melody “the best teacher” she’s ever had. But that’s precisely why she is able to have so much influence over her students.

Ahead of the highly anticipated eventual release of “Big Little Lies” Season 3, read below for Variety’s character-by-character breakdown of the main plot in “Big Little Truths.”

    Madeline

Madeline, now working part-time in a local hotel’s events department, is just trying to get through her 50th birthday intact with all the emotions that come with hitting 50. Her party is a huge hit (not that it was a competition to anyone but Madeline), and it becomes a successful effort to get her daughter Chloe back talking with Jane’s son Ziggy and the rest of the kids after they found separate friend groups over the years. Madeline, however, is quickly riddled with guilt after her mom (who was supposed to show at the party) faints at home and was waiting all day for somebody to call and realize.

On top of that, Madeline finds out that her eldest child, Abigail, who is now 25, is getting married to “Picture Perfect Boyfriend,” as Madeline calls Luka. Madeline is also privately struggling with a lump on her chest that she fears could turn out to be breast cancer. However, after she gets tested and finds out she is cancer-free, it turns out Ed is the one that actually has cancer, which completely throws Madeline’s life into disarray as she takes on all responsibility in caring for both Ed and her mom (as only Madeline could).

Behind closed doors, Chloe gets hired by Melody under the pretense that Chloe is helping her teacher’s illiterate husband learn how to read. Abigail ends up canceling her wedding, which she spent so much time preparing only because she thought that’s what would make Madeline happy. Madeline learns that “Picture Perfect Boyfriend” has flaws too, and accepts him into the family. Ed starts having memory issues and ends up in a psychiatric ward. By the end, Ed’s chemo is a success and he is on the road to being cancer-free. After Chloe opens up about her sexual encounter with Seth, Madeline has to reckon with the fact that she let Melody into her child’s life — Melody will forever be a chapter in their family’s history.

    Jane

While Jane is now married to Tom, owner of the beloved Blue Blues coffee shop, the two face new unspoken tensions about Jane’s declaration she no longer wants to have biological kids together. After Madeline’s birthday, Jane is forced to have a difficult conversation with Ziggy after Amabella, Renata’s daughter, tells her that Perry raped Jane. She opens up in the conversation, but falls short of labeling it rape, trying to maintain some sense of innocence within Ziggy. As Melody worms her way into Jane’s close-knitted friend group, she takes Jane out clubbing (just the two of them!) and they almost kiss, which leads Jane to wonder whether there’s any attraction there when Tom asks about it later. Tom, however, is open to Jane having sexual attraction to women, although Jane falls short of ever labeling herself or exploring what happened there.

Ziggy is the one who ends up giving the big presentation that takes down Melody; Jane knows that he was right to not clue her in as Melody was getting close to the moms. Jane opens up to Tom about her traumatic childbirth experience with Ziggy. Although Tom doesn’t pretend to be happy about not getting a kid of his own, especially after his mother suggests to Jane that they break up, he accepts this life with her. He tells Jane to take a trip and finally get a break from her chaotic life.

    Celeste

Celeste is now raising two teenage sons, Max and Josh, on her own, but of course Mary-Louise is still in the picture. After moving to town to live closer to the boys, Mary-Louise begins questioning why her grandsons aren’t closer to their half brother, Ziggy. Celeste begins worrying about her mother-in-law after her credit cards are declined and her outfits are increasingly out of place, but things begin to click when Mary-Louise gives Max, Josh and Ziggy expensive cars. Max and Josh’s emotional reactions after Celeste demands they give the keys back serve as a sad reminder that Perry’s violent outbursts aren’t just a distant memory.

Celeste realizes that Mary-Louise needs to be evaluated for dementia after she begins forgetting things, although this is later revealed to be due to her allergy medication’s side effects. While Celeste describes her wild sex years after Perry’s death, she has her first real relationship in 10 years with Marco, who is new to town. She gets suspicious of Marco after she learns that he is the man who has been driving around town and talking to underage girls (even being nicknamed “Pedo Pete” for it), but she later learns that he arrived in town because his daughter, Betty, had gotten close to Melody years prior — and suffered the consequences for it. By the end, Celeste ends up staying with Marco, realizing he’s the one for her.

    Renata

Relishing the single life after her ex-husband went to prison, Renata hits a low point when her estranged mother dies. The other moms all then learn about Renata’s troubled family history; when she was 12, an uncle inappropriately touched her, but no one in her life believed her, leading them to shun her forever. That explains why all those years ago she was so protective of Amabella during the kindergarten incident. On the way home from the funeral, Renata seems to be holding it together until she pulls over and screams into a steering wheel. It’s a sight the other moms have never quite seen from her.

Renata starts dating fitness instructor Brody, who teaches all the moms at a beach bootcamp, and takes motorcycle lessons in the spirit of her teenage rebellion years. Out of all the moms, Renata is the most suspicious of Melody, especially after they all go away for a weekend together. When speaking to Jane later on, Ziggy explains that Amabella likes girls, although it’s unclear if she’s out as queer to Renata.

    Bonnie

For the first time in Bonnie’s life, she begins feeling a divide between her and and her daughter Skye after Skye learns more about Bonnie’s role in Perry’s death. Bonnie connects with Madeline over their shared distrust of Abigail’s “Picture Perfect Boyfriend,” but silently struggles with the weight of Perry’s death all these years later, realizing that she’s never quite gotten over it. During the retreat with Melody, she opens up to the other moms.

While Mary-Louise makes snarky quips at Bonnie’s expense at a few different public gatherings, she starts to take a liking to Syke by the end. Bonnie formally apologizes for Perry’s death and gives Mary-Louise some closure. Bonnie ends up admitting herself to rehab and seeking help after developing a drinking problem.

  • ‘Finding Emily’ Review: Angourie Rice and Spike Fearn Can’t Conjure Enough Sparks to Save This Rom-Com From Its Toxic Premise

‘Finding Emily’ Review: Angourie Rice and Spike Fearn Can’t Conjure Enough Sparks to Save This Rom-Com From Its Toxic Premise

The problem with Finding Emily is not that no one in it acts like a real and reasonable human being, although no one does — not its exhaustingly lovelorn hero (Spike Fearn‘s Owen), nor its acridly skeptical heroine (Angourie Rice‘s Emily), nor any of the screeching over-reactors and thoughtless under-reactors surrounding them. Absurd behavior is, after all, a cornerstone of the rom-com genre; if you didn’t want to believe in a world where the path to true love cuts through harebrained fake dating schemes or HR-nightmare jobs that require getting dumped, you’d watch something else.

No, the problem with Finding Emily is that it’s so busy reassuring you how delightful it is that none of its characters act like real and reasonable human beings that it forgets to conjure the necessary magic to make you love them anyway. Lacking not just in sense but charm and chemistry to boot, this would-be defense of rom-com tropes against our jaded age ends up, instead, far more cynical than any of the criticisms it’s supposedly fighting against.

    Finding Emily

    The Bottom Line

A self-serving experiment with unsatisfying results.

    Release date: Friday, Aug. 28
Cast: Angourie Rice, Spike Fearn, Cora Kirk, Jack Riddiford, Prasanna Puwanarajah, Timothy Innes, Isabella Laughland, Minnie Driver
    Director: Alicia MacDonald
    Screenwriter: Rachel Hirons

    Rated PG-13,
    1 hour 51 minutes

Director Alicia MacDonald and screenwriter Rachel Hirons’ self-awareness is apparent from the opening scene, an utterly classic meet-cute. At a party one night, struggling musician Owen strikes a connection with a young woman (Sadie Soverall) that feels downright magical — she’s even dressed as a fairy, emphasizing the dreaminess of the moment. In the cold light of day, however, Owen discovers his happy ending is further away than he might have hoped. The number she’s left him with is one digit short, making a follow-up text impossible.

But Owen, a romantic so starry-eyed that Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother would have advised him to chill, is not so easily deterred. Knowing nothing about his fantasy woman beyond her first name (Emily) and her school (Manchester City University, where he works as a sound engineer), he mounts a no-holds-barred campaign to track her down, pestering the school secretary for contact information and then papering the entire campus with wanted posters when that fails.

This is, to put it plainly, kinda creepy behavior, and initially it seems to be to the film’s credit that it recognizes this. Finding Emily presents itself as a rom-com that doubles as a thought exercise in how genre tropes like nice guys and manic pixie dream girls play in the era of Obsession and Companion, Couch Guy and West Elm Caleb, think pieces about incels and rape culture and toxic masculinity. But much like its own female lead, it can’t seem to resist pressing its thumb on the scale.

Because as hopeless as Owen’s dreamy idealism might be (“Oh no, not again” groans his brother, played by Jack Riddiford, when he hears about the mystery girl), he’s not the really the off-putting one here. That would be Rice’s Emily Raine, the psych student he rudely pulls out of class while looking for his One True Emily.

This Emily does not believe in romance at all, and in fact is working on a thesis paper “proving” that love is just a useless self-sabotaging state of psychosis. In Owen, she sees the perfect case study, or as she puts it, “my very own Stanford prison experiment.” And as with the actual Stanford prison experiment, questions of ethics and scientific validity are sidelined in favor of getting splashy results by any means necessary. Forging Owen’s signature on consent forms and posing as just a helpful bystander, she encourages him to keep looking when he’s ready to quit and manipulates him into more and more extreme efforts, culminating in an un-BCCed email blast sent to all 318 Emilys enrolled at the school.

Does this sound like the foundation for a true and lasting love? Or does it sound like an unforgivable breach of trust, as well as a hopelessly sloppy project that Emily’s professor (an amusingly grumpy Prassana Puwanarajah) should have nipped in the bud? I found it to be the latter, but Finding Emily stakes its bet on the former, and keeps doubling down even as the consequences pile up for Owen.

Once the email goes viral, Owen becomes a TikTok trending topic, a subject of clickbaity internet explainers (“Creep, criminal, or just cringe?”), an urgent campus security issue, a catalyst for student protests against predators. Even a winsome serenade to the Mystery Emily during an otherwise disastrous podcast interview only goes so far in turning the tide; while some onlookers are swayed to his side, others just expand their repertoire of insults from “rapist virgin” to “toxic incel true-crime Ed Sheeran.”

But if the fallout for Owen has a distinctly modern flavor, complete with trendy buzzwords getting thrown around social media, Finding Emily‘s take on his journey is stubbornly old-fashioned. “I’ve burned my bra, I’ve done the work,” snaps a dean (Minnie Driver tepidly channeling Allison Janney in 10 Things I Hate About You) who has no interest in listening to strident feminist activists like Emily Thewlis (Kat Rooney) complain about how Owen’s grand email gesture was sexual harassment or whatever.

And why would the dean be? Finding Emily has stacked the deck insurmountably in favor of Owen, whom we know to be utterly harmless and unimpeachably pure of heart. By making him the sole lighting rod for all these issues, it raises valid concerns around consent, boundaries and male entitlement only to dismiss them as hysterical. Besides, we know who’s really to blame for this whole mess — it’s not this would-be lover boy but the ruthless woman who exploited his genuine sentiment for her own careerist ends.

What’s especially exasperating about Finding Emily’s sour fixation on fending off imaginary haters is that there are moments when it betrays just enough sweetness to make you want to want these characters to make it work. I found Emily Raine too devious to like, and yet Rice plays her with enough brightness that she’s hard to completely hate. Fearn’s choice to play Owen as a mumbling, fidgeting ball of heart-on-sleeve emotion makes him feel natural and authentic, even as the circumstances surrounding him grow ever more contrived.

The two share the shaggy, laid-back ease of fast friends more than the burning desire of lovers-to-be. (My kingdom for romances to actually start casting for palpable heat again.) But there are small gestures — like when Owen defends Emily’s disgusting chip shop order before an ex (Timothy Innes) making fun of it — when it’s possible to understand how even a heart as firmly closed as Emily’s might crack open for a guy this unapologetically sincere. Maybe there could have been something there, in the unforced affection between the two stars. It’s a shame the rest of the movie — the unhinged plot, the one-sided debates, the smug self-referentiality — makes this couple impossible to root for.

  • Rob Reiner’s Son, In First Interview, Speaks About Parents’ Murders, Won’t Discuss Brother Accused of Killings

Rob Reiner’s Son, In First Interview, Speaks About Parents’ Murders, Won’t Discuss Brother Accused of Killings

In his first public interview since the brutal murders of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, in their Los Angeles home in December, their son Jake Reiner reveals details of his sister’s discovery of the murder scene and discusses the incredible loss of his parents and his younger brother, who is in jail awaiting trial for the double murder.

Jake Reiner, 34, spoke with ABC 7 Los Angeles about his famous filmmaker father’s legacy and the experience he’s had after losing both parents so abruptly and in such a tragic manner. He also gave an update on his sister, Romy Reiner, but would not discuss anything around his brother, Nick Reiner, who has been charged with and pleaded not guilty to murdering his parents.

“Nobody really understands what it’s like to go through something like that until you’re living it,” Jake Reiner told the L.A. ABC affiliate. “It’s been 8 months. It feels like 8 years at the same time. And it also feels like 8 minutes. Because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”

Romy Reiner, 28, was the one who discovered the body of her father on Dec. 14 inside the Brentwood home where her parents lived, across the street from her apartment. Her brother described the moment he heard from her after she’d called 911. “Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, ‘I can’t find mom,’” Jake Reiner said. “I immediately went into shock.”

Nick Reiner, who was staying in a guest house on his parents’ property, was arrested in connection with the killings and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. He has since been trying to access the funds in a trust his parents set up for him, as they did for each of their children. The trust’s professional fiduciary and trustees have blocked him, citing California’s slayer statute, which prevents anyone from inheriting or financially benefiting from the estate of a person they are accused of killing.

Jake Reiner opted not to discuss his brother’s murder case while being interviewed. He only mentioned his younger brother once during the sit-down, which aired Thursday and was his first since the killings took place. Both Jake and Romy Reiner testified before the grand jury that indicted their brother.

“[Nick]’s in jail. It’s like, I physically lost my parents, and then Nick was arrested. Now it’s just me and Romy, and we have to navigate this by ourselves essentially,” he said.

“For me, it manifests into anger,” he added. “It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened. I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter. I just have to accept the reality of it. And to me, that is just one of the most infuriating parts of all of this.”

Nick Reiner’s pretrial hearing in the murder case is scheduled for Sept. 15.

  • ‘GTA 6’ Drops 27 Minutes of New In-Game Footage on Netflix Amid Ongoing Rockstar Games Leaks

‘GTA 6’ Drops 27 Minutes of New In-Game Footage on Netflix Amid Ongoing Rockstar Games Leaks

Netflix dropped 27 minutes of new “Grand Theft Auto 6″ content Thursday at 3 p.m. ET in a collaboration with Rockstar Games ahead of the highly anticipated title’s November release.

The event, which was first announced earlier this month, comes as Rockstar continues to suffer ongoing “GTA 6” gameplay leaks.

The “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” content was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5 (the game will be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S on Nov. 19), per Netflix and Take-Two Interactive-owned publisher Rockstar. It marks the lengthiest look fans have gotten at “GTA 6” thus far, following two trailers released over the past three years.

The special features “GTA 6” protagonists Jason and Lucia in both cinematic and gameplay scenes throughout the fictional Vice City, and teases the overall narrative of the game.

Per the official description for “GTA 6”: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida – forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Netflix says the “GTA 6” “extended look” event represents “the next evolution of storytelling and content” on the streaming platform: “This trailblazing partnership with Rockstar Games elevates games to the center of modern culture — bringing an in-depth look at one of the most anticipated releases in the history of entertainment to Netflix subscribers first.”

Rockstar has stated Netflix will be the exclusive home of the “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” special for six hours before the content is released on YouTube and across other platforms at 9 p.m. ET. It seems that exclusivity has had an impact as user error reports for Netflix spiked just prior to the Netflix “GTA 6” reveal, hitting 3,129 at 2:49 p.m. ET, according to service-monitoring website Downdetector.com.

Several “GTA 6” gameplay videos have been released over the past week by a hacker group calling itself CyberLeek, which claims to have obtained a playable build of the game. The videos have been posted across multiple websites and subsequently removed and continued to appear in new locations.

Rockstar Games — which last week filed subpoenas related to the “GTA 6” leaks — issued its first statement about the situation on Wednesday, just ahead of Netflix’s big gameplay footage debut.

    “Dear all,

We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week. It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time. We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has — from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.

We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.

We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week — your words meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games.

We look forward to sharing more with you soon.

    Sincerely,

    Rockstar Games”

Later Wednesday, Rockstar posted two messages on X noting its preferences regarding how fans go about creating content based on the Netflix event amid the outside leaks, writing: “Once Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look debuts on Netflix, creators can share their reaction content across social and video platforms.”

In a followup, Rockstar added: “Quick clarification: you are free to livestream An Extended Look from 3 p.m. ET on August 27 providing you adhere to platform-specific guidance and you do not simply restream or repost the unedited video in full without context or commentary.”

  • Curry Barker and Universal Bring ‘Obsession’ to Halloween Horror Nights — With a Twist for Fans

Curry Barker and Universal Bring ‘Obsession’ to Halloween Horror Nights — With a Twist for Fans

Halloween Horror Nights is constantly pushing expectations. But this latest effort will leave diehard fans even more Obsessed.

Earlier this month, the L.A. park’s HHN Creative Director and executive producer John Murdy dropped a surprise announcement revealing the presence of Obsession’s Nikki as part of the 2026 event. Now, Murdy is sharing more details on what to expect at Universal Destinations & Experiences’ popular after-hours event for that appearance — something he says came together “very late in the game for us in terms of our development.”

During that Aug. 8 panel, Murdy had teased the version of Nikki fans would see, noting it would be based on her final look in the Curry Barker film, which is (spoiler alert!) a climactic sequence that features both a Nikki (Inde Navarrette) whose agency and autonomy are corrupted by Bear’s (Michael Johnston) twisted wish and the real young woman trapped inside her own body as a result of the curse. For the event, Murdy confirms fans will interact with the version of Nikki before the “wish” is undone.

At the time, Murdy described Nikki’s appearance as being like an interactive “Where’s Waldo?” allowing fans to engage with the character at various points throughout the park. HHN fans quickly connected the experience to the roaming Art the Clown as part of the 2025 event’s Terrifier collaboration.

“It’s similar to Art last year, where we created this thing to activate areas of the theme park you would never expect to see a performer in. That included our retail store,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve identified a number of different locations where she can appear. You never know where you might encounter her.”

Unlike Art, who was performed by a team of “scare actors” for the first time in the event’s history, Nikki will be cast with traditional actors. Using dialogue scripted by Murdy and pulled “straight from Curry’s” film, these performers will also pick guests to engage with. “Normally, our scare actors don’t speak,” Murdy explains. “But it seemed really important to give Nikki the authentic voice Curry gave her in the film. So I took all of the dialogue from the film, and put together a creative treatment that I sent to Curry.”

If guests want to engage Nikki, they’ll need to check out USH’s social media, including its Instagram Story where a password will be shared that will trigger interactions with the performer. “It encourages our guests to find Nikki, and if they give her the password, they might get something,” he says.

That will include the One Wish Willow phone number Bear calls to attempt a modification of his wish. “I love the scene where Bear tries to call the customer service department, and when I was reading about the making of the film, I realized that Curry did that voice,” he says. “I’ve asked him to record a special message for our fans as if he were the customer service rep from One Wish Willow. So it’ll have a phone number on it, and they can call the number and get an exclusive message from Curry.”

As part of the park’s standard protocols with day and night characters, Nikki will have a production assistant working as her handler while she moves about, ensuring the safety of the performers and guests. Murdy has also used some of the movie’s lines in ways that allow the character and performer to control interactions with attendees. “Curry’s dialogue can be used to engage or disengage a guest,” Murdy says. “She has so many great lines like, ‘No, no, no, no’ from that dinner sequence, or she can say, ‘I thought we were having a nice time,’ and just turn and leave.”

HHN Hollywood’s creative director says this last-minute event addition was initially inspired by a fan who sent him “a video of an interview that Curry did about how the Halloween season was coming, and how Nikki would be the No. 1 costume.”

The conversation between Barker and the journalist would eventually gravitate to Halloween Horror Nights, whose mazes for many horror TV creators and filmmakers have become badges of honor, and markers of pop cultural relevance. So when Barker revealed he goes every year, Murdy thought, “We’ve got to do something.” After ringing Focus Features, they set up a call with Barker where Murdy pitched an idea based on something the breakout filmmaker had shared in that interview.

“He expressed a desire to see her in the event this year, and I combined it with what we used to do with the password to create a new activation for our fanbase,” he says. “He was very much in favor of the idea, and that’s what we’re in the middle of developing.”

Earlier this summer, Navarrette, who was recently announced as part of the cast for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie following her breakout role in Obsession, also hoped to see Nikki at HHN. In that interview, the actress shared her desire to come dressed as the character — something other actors, like Us star Lupita Nyong’o, have done as an official part of the event.

When the event kicks off on Sept. 3, HHN aficionados will see how the Nikki experience also harkens back to the 2011 collaboration for “Eli Roth’s Hostel: Hunting Season” maze. “I was doing Hostel with Eli Roth, and Eli really wanted the girls that lured the guys into the ‘art show’ — which is just a torture chamber in Hostel — as part of the house. I’m like, ‘Well, they really need something to do, something interactive with the guests.’ Eli kept everything from Hostel, so he had all the business cards for Elite Hunting, which was the secret society in the film.”

To generate the interactive elements, Murdy devised the password system, sharing it over X (then Twitter). “It was this Easter-eggy underground thing for the real big fans,” he tells THR. “I just started tweeting passwords every night and saying, ‘If you give the password to the girls in front of Hostel, you could get something in exchange.’”

He would do it again in various forms over the years as part of collaborations tied to IP like Ghostbusters and Insidious. While he shelved it several years ago, eager event fans have frequently questioned when it would come back. The developing experience is part of a larger effort by HHN to stay on the rapidly expanding — and evolving — pulse of what’s happening in horror. And right now, says Murdy, what’s happening is a 24-year-old filmmaker who just turned his $750,000 budget indie film into a record-breaking box office hit.

“It’s like New Hollywood in the late ’60s into the early ’70s, but now it’s the YouTube kids stepping into the arena,” Murdy says, while discussing the re-rise of horror the after-hours event has been able to capitalize on over the last decade. “I think it started with Get Out. That was the first moment where everybody was like, ‘Whoa.’ Sinners falls into that big time, but then there’s the double whammy of Obsession and Backrooms, which feel [tonally] different from Sinners and Get Out.”

For Murdy, tapping into the nuances, shifts, and trends within the genre is part of how the bicoastal event continues to expand and stay fresh. Alongside Nikkie, HHN 2026 will feature the Evil Dead Burn house, which will include an animatronic talking head for the first time. Inside the “Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness” maze — a tribute house to the late rocker’s life and discography — fans will experience a “Crazy Train” and giant bat that bites the head off the Black Sabbath frontman.

The Hellraiser queue will feature a giant puzzle box “like a pastiche painting with all the different levels of hell” and a center circle that “disappears while you’re waiting in line and electrifies, before you see Pinhead in a circle doing lines from the film,” according to Murdy. And for the first time, the Sinners house is turning to Water World stunt performers for a floating air stunt, which will use a flying rig to drop the Irish vampire Remick in long enough to hover as he delivers his now iconic “Sammie” line.

Nikki, then, is just the latest way Halloween Horror Nights — also kicking off its 35th anniversary at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida on Aug. 28 — is “always pushing to see where we can take the brand next,” says Murdy.

  • Ripple Moves to Scrap Key XRPL Amendment

Ripple Moves to Scrap Key XRPL Amendment

Ripple is recommending that the $XRP Ledger community withdraw the long-running XChainBridge (XLS-38) amendment that is focused on bringing cross-chain bridging to the network.

According to the company, the technology is no longer needed for its main intended use case. Moreover, it has failed to secure sufficient developer demand.

Ripple cannot unilaterally remove the feature since it controls only one validator vote on the $XRP Ledger. The withdrawal still has to proceed via the network’s standard amendment process.

XLS-38 was created to provide a native bridging framework for the $XRP Ledger. The proposal would allow assets to move between the XRPL mainnet and connected sidechains with the help of “witness servers.”

The system was designed with custom sidechains, including private and permissioned networks as well as experimental chains. It was also originally intended to serve as the bridge connecting the $XRP Ledger to the XRPL EVM Sidechain.

    The Axelar alternative

Ripple said it selected the Axelar network for the EVM Sidechain. Axelar’s network currently has more than 75 validators and supports broad interoperability with more than 50 blockchain networks.

Ripple initially decided to use Axelar for the XRPL EVM Sidechain in June 2024. At the time, the company said it would continue leaving XLS-38 available for a community vote.

Ripple now says that there is little evidence that such demand exists.

“The primary use case that motivated XLS-38’s development is fully addressed, and we believe better addressed, by the Axelar integration,” RippleX said.

The company also argued that maintaining the dormant implementation has become a liability. Removing XChainBridge would allow developers to eliminate more than 10,000 lines of code.

Ripple’s decision could be reversed. Those devs who are actually building around XLS-38 have been asked to present some compelling use cases that could convince the company to change its mind.

  • HPC stays on policy offensive with CFTC push to prioritize perpetual contracts

HPC stays on policy offensive with CFTC push to prioritize perpetual contracts

The Hyperliquid Policy Center (HPC) made its stance clear in a filing with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Thursday, August 27, 2026, pushing the regulator to prioritize perpetual contracts in its innovation agenda.

The HPC’s latest push drops another ping on the radar of US traders who have been shut out of a derivative market that has gone beyond $500 billion in offshore volume.

Perpetual contracts took over CFTC meeting

The statement arrives just after the CFTC held its first Innovation Advisory Committee meeting on August 20. Perpetual contracts were not a part of the main agenda.

The main agenda included digital assets, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets. However, members of the committee could not stop mentioning the topic of perpetual contracts in each of the three sessions, according to HPC.

HPC took this as proof of demand and decided to make four arguments in its statement:

    • that perpetuals are critical to CFTC’s innovation work
    • that they meet real hedging needs
    • that a friendlier CFTC is presently bringing these markets onshore
    • and that public blockchains can modernize derivative plumbing, thus rewriting the law.

Jake Chervinsky, chief executive of HPC, signed the statement, alongside senior counsel Brad Bourque. HPC submitted the statement to Commission Secretary Christopher Kirkpatrick.

HPC self-describes as an independent research and advocacy organization with ties to the Hyperliquid Foundation. HPC was founded by the Hyperliquid Foundation in February 2026.

Who spoke at the committee meeting?

In the statement, HPC mentioned the names of the members who brought up perpetuals, citing timestamps in the meeting webcast.

Tyler Winklevoss of Gemini said that US firms are being left behind as perpetual contracts make up a bulk of global digital assets trading volume. Don Wilson of DRW perceives perpetuals to be risk tools that registered funds would rather hold next to dated futures.

Brian Armstrong of Coinbase, Raghu Yarlagadda of FalconX, and Multicoin’s Tushar Jain also spoke in favor of perpetuals

Why a contract can track a price despite it expiring

A huge part of HPC’s filing centers on the mechanics of a perpetual contract. A perpetual contract has no settlement date, cannot be rolled over, nor delivered. Rather than expire, money is transferred between long and short holders by a recurring funding payment. This is done so the price can move back toward a reference price.

HPC views this as a better solution for exposures that do not end. It gave examples like: an airline consuming aviation fuel, a fund that manages portfolio risk, and an AI developer that has rising compute costs. They all have unending costs, and hedging them with dated futures will mean traders get to experience a roll cycle that includes risk with timing and transaction costs.

A kinder CFTC docket with a lawsuit to match

The statement arrives at a perfect time. It comes at a point when the CFTC has developed a friendlier vibe toward perpetuals.

In May, the CFTC approved the first US-listed perpetual futures contract, Kalshi’s BTCPERP. It further released a policy statement and staff guidance that broached continuous trading. In June, it requested comment on extending the product to storable energy commodities.

HPC and the HIP-3 deployer trade[XYZ] issued a joint response to the energy request on August 26. Then, HPC went on to file a separate response on August 24, requesting the SEC and CFTC to see qualifying equity perpetuals as security futures.

Walt Lukken of the FIA released committee figures which showed the agency was in charge of 30 designated contract markets, up from 16 in 2003 and 17 pending applications. The agency also oversees 6,700 listed contracts, up from 2,100 in 2023.

Not everyone is on board, though. CME Group took the CFTC to court in June, arguing perpetuals are swaps and not futures, and CME’s outgoing chief, Terry Duffy, has referred to the product as “a disaster waiting to happen.”
