Russian lab worker reportedly died of pneumonic plague. Here’s what we know

    • Reports spread in early October 2026 that a Russian lab worker may have died of the pneumonic plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis.
    • The pneumonic plague “has a nearly 100% case-fatality rate when untreated,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The illness requires antibiotic treatment that should start as soon as the plague is suspected, before test results, per the CDC.
    • The rumor stems from news media reports saying Russia announced that a 28-year-old lab worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia had died of an “unknown” infection, and that nearly 200 people have been isolated as a result. The reports cite Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian public agency responsible for “federal state sanitary and epidemiological supervision,” according to the Russian government.
    • Snopes could not reach the website of Rospotrebnadzor and does not have access to primary sources, therefore we cannot confirm the details of the lab worker’s death. Russian news agency Interfax reported the Russian government as saying she had died of a pneumonia pathogen of “unknown etiology,” meaning its origin is not clear.
    • On Oct. 4, Interfax also reported Rospotrebnadzor as saying, “based on the results of extensive testing, no microorganisms associated with the patient’s professional activities were detected in the patient’s sample.” If true, this would suggest the lab worker did not die of pneumonic plague.
    • A U.S. Department of State spokesperson said via email that the department is aware of the reports and is “monitoring the situation closely with the CDC and our other interagency partners.”

    • Snopes will update this report if, or when, additional information surfaces. We have also reached out to the CDC and the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Union Commission. We are waiting for responses.

In early October 2026, a rumor spread that a worker at a Russian lab that studies Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes the plague, had died of the pneumonic plague.

Some social media users said the lab worker’s death resulted from an accident at the lab. One X post reads, in part, “A lab worker in Russia has died from pneumonic plague.”

Meanwhile, several Snopes readers emailed us asking for details about the story.

The claim stems from various news reports about a 28-year-old woman who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia. Around 200 people have reportedly been isolated as a precautionary measure. The articles cited Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian public agency responsible for “federal state sanitary and epidemiological supervision,” according to the Russian government.

In short, it has not been possible to independently verify the rumor without access to primary sources or confirmation from Russian authorities. Therefore, this claim is unrated. We will update this article if we learn more.

Russian authorities reportedly implement containment measures

Snopes could not reach the website of Rospotrebnadzor, therefore we could not confirm the details of the lab worker’s death. On Oct. 4, Russian news agency Interfax reported that the Russian government said she had died of a pneumonia pathogen of “unknown etiology,” meaning its origin is not clear.

The same report adds that Rospotrebnadzor said no microorganisms associated with the individual’s professional work were detected in that person’s samples following “extensive testing.” If true, it would suggest the lab worker did not die of pneumonic plague.

Local authorities have reportedly implemented preventative measures. Interfax cites the Rospotrebnadzor health agency as saying:

Due to the patient’s professional activities, upon receiving information, a comprehensive set of anti-epidemic measures was immediately and fully implemented in accordance with sanitary legislation. This included identifying the widest possible circle of people who had been in contact with the patient, inpatient medical observation, and daily laboratory testing. The results revealed two cases of Covid-19 and two cases of rhinovirus infection. No other infectious agents were detected.

View from U.S. Department of State

“We are aware of reports of a fatal case of suspected pneumonic plague in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia,” a U.S. Department of State spokesperson said via email. “We are monitoring the situation closely with the CDC and our other interagency partners.”

We contacted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Union Commission requesting updates on the situation. We will update this report if we receive responses.

There are three main types of plague: bubonic plague, which infects lymph nodes; septicemic plague, which infects the blood; and pneumonic plague, which infects the lungs. The bubonic and septicemic plagues are most commonly transmitted via flea bites and handling infected animals, while the pneumonic plague spreads through the air via infected droplets.

The pneumonic plague “has a nearly 100% case-fatality rate when untreated,” according to the CDC. The illness requires antibiotic treatment that should start as soon as the plague is suspected, even before test results, per the U.S. health agency.

“Plague is a known disease and is treatable with common antibiotics, especially when treatment starts early,” the State Department spokesperson said via email. “Cases occur naturally in many parts of the world.”

Supreme Court Justice Denies Last-Minute Effort To Halt Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

UPDATED: Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan denied an last-minute effort to halt Paramount‘s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, a transaction that is scheduled to close on Tuesday.

Kagan’s denial of a petition was entered into the docket without comment.

In a filing earlier on Monday, the petitioners — Pamela Faust, Len Marazzo, Lisa McCarthy, Deborah Rubinsohn and Gary Talewsky — argued that the merger was still anticompetitive, even with the conditions put in place by the settlement of the state attorneys general lawsuit last month.

“The States’ settlement itself requires that the combined company not sell or close the Paramount or Warner Bros. lots during the commitment period, provides reapplication rights to employees displaced by the transaction, and creates an editorial-independence board. Those safeguards show the magnitude of the integration that closing will unleash, but they do not preserve competition between Paramount and Warner Bros.”

RELATED: Channing Dungey Poised For Expanded Post-Merger Role Overseeing Paramount & WBD Cable Networks – The Dish

The petition was a long shot, given that the plaintiffs’ efforts to stop the merger has been rejected by the district court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The plaintiffs, represented by Joseph M. Alioto, last month sought a temporary restraining order to block the merger. But U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin, in a ruling last week, cited the plaintiffs’ “repeated failures to advance any evidence in support of their motions for preliminary relief in this case to date.” She also cited an earlier decision in which she granted Paramount’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit, in which she wrote that she had “serious concerns” over the plaintiffs’ standing.

A federal appellate court denied their petition on Friday.

RELATED: Mark Thompson To Remain At CNN As Chairman Under Ellison’s Skydance

In their petition to the Supreme Court, the plaintiffs pointed to the record of transaction materials, CEO statements and consumer verifications.

Their brief stated: “The requested order is narrow: preserve separate ownership and prohibit integration pending disposition of the petition or further order. It does not decide final antitrust liability. It preserves the Court’s ability to decide the legal questions before the October 6 closing changes the competitive structure the Clayton Act is designed to protect.”

The plaintiffs described themselves as Paramount subscribers, viewers and cable customers. Their lawsuit originally was filed last spring, before the group of state attorneys general sued to block the deal. The settlement includes a consent decree that spells out a schedule of 30-plus theatrical releases per year as well as separate negotiations for the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery cable channels.

Heidi Klum’s daughter Lou, 16, attends Paris Fashion Week as a gift

Heidi Klum has spent decades commanding attention at Fashion Week, but this time, the supermodel had a new reason to celebrate in Paris.

Klum’s youngest daughter, Lou Sulola Samuel, 16, made her Paris Fashion Week debut on Oct. 3, stepping into the high-fashion scene alongside her famous mom for the Vivienne Westwood Spring/Summer 2027 show. The appearance was a milestone for Lou, who has largely maintained a private life despite growing up with two world-famous parents.

And there was extra meaning behind the mother-daughter trip. Lou turns 17 on Oct. 9, and Klum revealed that Paris Fashion Week was an early birthday gift for her youngest daughter.

For her first official Fashion Week experience in Paris, Lou joined Klum in the front row at the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood Spring/Summer 2027 show.

The teenager did not walk the runway. Rather, her debut marked her first Paris Fashion Week appearance and a chance to experience a major designer show from the front row.

Klum explained to British Vogue that she wanted the occasion to be special because of her connection to Vivienne Westwood and creative director Andreas Kronthaler.

The supermodel called the Paris getaway a “little early birthday present” for Lou and said she believed the Westwood show would be the ideal first Fashion Week experience for her daughter.

Klum certainly knows the territory. Just one day earlier, the 53-year-old model had walked the Ottolinger Spring/Summer 2027 runway during Paris Fashion Week.

Lou Samuel’s Vivienne Westwood Look Had a Gen Z Twist

Lou made her arrival memorable with a youthful take on Vivienne Westwood’s signature dramatic silhouettes.

The 16-year-old wore an acid-wash pink denim ensemble featuring a structured corset-style top with a flared peplum and a coordinating asymmetrical miniskirt. She completed the outfit with towering floral platform shoes and a snakeskin-print shoulder bag.

Her long brunette curls were worn loose and voluminous, giving the polished Fashion Week outfit a more relaxed feel.

Klum coordinated with her daughter without completely matching her. The supermodel chose a sculptural white blazer with exaggerated lapels and a cinched waist, paired with a long white column skirt and platform heels.

The result was a mother-daughter fashion moment that highlighted their individual styles rather than turning the pair into exact look-alikes.

Lou and Klum also posed at the show alongside Jaden Smith and Paris Jackson, making Lou’s first major Paris fashion event a particularly star-packed introduction.

Lou Samuel Admits She Was Nervous About Her Fashion Week Debut

Despite growing up around celebrities, photographers and fashion, Lou admitted that her first official Fashion Week experience came with nerves.

Speaking with British Vogue, the teenager explained that being photographed has been part of her life since childhood because of her famous family. Attending a major fashion event, however, felt different.

Lou said the experience gave her an opportunity to express herself and show more of who she is rather than simply being photographed because of her parents. She also admitted she was “totally nervous” because it was her first time attending an event of this kind.

That distinction could prove important if Lou decides to pursue fashion professionally. Her Paris appearance allowed her to enter the spotlight on slightly different terms, with fashion and personal style at the center of the conversation.

Could Lou Samuel Follow Heidi Klum Into Modeling?

Lou has not announced plans to become a professional model, so her Paris Fashion Week appearance should not be mistaken for confirmation of a modeling career. Still, fashion already runs through the Klum family.

Her older sister Leni Klum, 22, has established a modeling career of her own, while her brother Henry Samuel has also entered the industry. Henry made his runway debut at the Lena Erziak Spring 2025 Couture show and has since appeared at additional fashion presentations.

Lou told British Vogue that she does not necessarily seek fashion advice from her siblings. Instead, watching them pursue their own careers gives her confidence because they share a similar upbringing.

Whether Lou ultimately follows Leni, Henry and Heidi into modeling remains an open question.

Who Is Heidi Klum’s Daughter Lou Samuel?

Lou Sulola Samuel is the youngest of Heidi Klum’s four children. She is Klum’s daughter with singer Seal, alongside sons Henry and Johan. Klum’s eldest daughter, Leni, is from her previous relationship with Flavio Briatore, and Seal later adopted her.

Compared with Leni, Lou has generally stayed away from major public appearances. That made her Paris Fashion Week outing particularly notable. With her 17th birthday arriving just days after the event, the trip also marked a new chapter for the teenager.

Whether that chapter eventually includes modeling remains to be seen. But for one weekend in Paris, Lou got a firsthand introduction to the fashion world her mother has inhabited for decades.

A purported screenshot circulated online in fall 2026 of a purported Truth Social post, dated Sept. 22, in which U.S. President Donald Trump wrote that he had “spoken to God” and that “tonight is Armageddon.”.

The image spread on multiple platforms, including Instagram, Threads and Facebook. Many commenters appeared to believe Trump actually posted the remarks. The full text of the alleged post read as follows:

I have spoken to God and he has given me a vision of an ocean filled with blood a city of dust a golden throne for me to sit on, eternally!!!, Tonight is Armageddon, the final judgement of good and evil!!!! Lock your doors and do not directly at the flash!!!! God bless us all!!!

Despite the username matching Trump’s real Truth Social username, there’s no evidence Trump actually published the post. The earliest version of the image we found appeared on a Polish X account that captioned it (translation via X): “Well, fake, but would you be surprised?” (archived).

We searched Trump’s Truth — an online archive of Trump’s Truth Social posts — for the word “Armageddon,” and none of the three results related to the quote above.

We also looked all posts Trump actually published on Sept. 22 and found he published four that day. None of the four posts matched the timestamp or content of that in the screenshot.

The fake quote appeared to echo whistleblower reports received by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation that U.S. military commanders told troops their action in Iran was “all part of God’s divine plan,” allegedly “referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.”

Trump has echoed similarly apocalyptic language, posting in May 2026, for example, that “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” — referring to U.S. attacks on Iran. He’s also faced criticism for his posting an image depicting him in the likeness of Jesus Christ.

Donald Trump Says His Political Entity Will Now Pay For TV Ads Rather Than Taxpayers

Donald Trump said that his super PAC MAGA Inc. would now pay for advertisements that the White House has run at taxpayer expense and stirred an outcry among Democrats and some Republicans.

Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday: “The Radical Left is upset with the fact that I am taking Ads, which I consider to be a positive promotion for our Great U.S.A., and paying for them with U.S.A. money. This is a rather standard thing to do but, rather than doing that, although nothing will make them happy, I have decided to do the Patriotic Ads, among others, and pay for them myself, and with money I raised for MAGA, Inc.”

The White House has deemed the spots to be public service announcements, comparing them to government-funded ads that promoted vaccines under President Joe Biden and the Affordable Care Act under President Barack Obama.

RELATED: White House Slams Chuck Lorre’s “Peanut-Sized Brain” After He Roasts Trump: “Immediately Seek Psychiatric Help”

But the Trump spots feature himself and promote his presidency. One of the ads is almost identical to a spot that Trump posted on social media to promote his 2024 presidential campaign. More than $10 million has been spent on the series of ads, per CNN, citing estimates from analysis firm AdImpact.

Airing during football games and news programming, among other dayparts, the ads prominently featured the line, “Paid for by the U.S. government.” The group Public Citizen filed an FCC complaint, arguing that broadcasters could be held liable for an illegal use of government funds. But FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said last week that he didn’t see anything “out of the ordinary” in the airing of the spots, calling them a “normal PSA.”

    Context

An Oct. 2 video shows Trump fielding reporters’ questions outside the White House. Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked, “What do you think about New York’s governor appointing a special prosecutor in the Cornell rape case, Letitia James?” (James, New York’s attorney general, previously led a civil fraud case against Trump.) Trump thrice called James corrupt, saying he feels “badly” for “whoever” James prosecutes and alleged that defendants she targets “won’t get a fair shake.”

A rumor circulated online in early October that U.S. President Donald Trump said he feels “badly” for the seven current or former male Cornell University students whom a female former student accused of rape.

Trump purportedly made the remarks while answering a question about New York Attorney General Letitia James’ appointment as a special prosecutor to investigate the case.

Snopes readers asked about this claim via email, with one person inquiring, “I saw something that says Donald Trump said he feels bad for the ‘Cornell 7,’ but can’t find reputable sources. True??”

In sum, people correctly attributed this statement to Trump. A C-SPAN video shows Trump standing outside the White House on Oct. 2 and responding directly to a reporter’s question about the Cornell case, thrice calling James corrupt and saying he feels “badly” for “whoever” James prosecutes, alleging that defendants she targets “won’t get a fair shake.”

James previously sued Trump and his associates in a civil fraud case beginning in 2022, leading to Trump repeatedly targeting her on social media.

In an emailed response, White House spokesperson Lauren Bis referred us to Trump’s own comments, adding that the White House believes James has weaponized the justice system to unjustly target the president.

    Digging into the rumor

The Cornell accuser, identified in court documents only as Jane Doe, claims the seven men sexually assaulted her at the Chi Phi fraternity house on Oct. 19 and 20, 2024. She filed a lawsuit against the seven men, the university, the fraternity and others, in mid-September.

On Sept. 28, Tompkins County, New York, prosecutors announced they were reopening the criminal investigation, citing a “discrepancy” between Doe’s original statement and the allegations in the lawsuit.

Prior to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointing James as a special prosecutor to investigate the case on Oct. 1, James posted a statement of compassion for Doe on her official social media accounts, writing, “What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable. I’m holding her in my heart and in my prayers. To her, and to all survivors: you’re not alone. We stand with you.”

In an example of the claim from Oct. 2, a Facebook post (archived) displayed a meme reading, “This is disgusting: Trump just said he ‘feels badly’ for the people accused in the Cornell rape case because Letitia James is now overseeing the investigation. Not one word for the victim.”

    (Really American via Facebook)

Other users shared the rumor about Trump’s remarks on Bluesky (archived), Facebook (archived) and X (archived). Some posts didn’t mention James but did include a video showing a reporter’s question about James and Trump’s answer. Examples of those posts appeared on Bluesky (archived), Threads (archived) and X (archived).

The remarks occurred when Trump spoke to a group of reporters outside the White House. Videos show Fox News’ Peter Doocy asking Trump about Hochul appointing James as a special prosecutor:

DOOCY: What do you think about New York’s governor appointing a special prosecutor in the Cornell rape case, Letitia James?

TRUMP: Letitia James is a corrupt person. She’s totally corrupt and I can’t imagine it. And, I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake. But Letitia James is a corrupt person.

C-SPAN posted remarks on social media. (Readers can also watch the full press gaggle on YouTube, with the pertinent moment beginning at 6:24.)

Trump has made other remarks about the Cornell case. During a similar gathering of reporters on Oct. 1, a video shows an unidentified reporter asking Trump, “Mr. President, do you think that Cornell University has done enough to investigate the alleged rape on campus?” Trump answered, “Well, I don’t know that much about it but Cornell is a fine school, and I’m sure they’ll do what’s right.” (Readers can watch that full gaggle on YouTube, with the Cornell question occurring at 11:43.)

Trump has also posted about the case on Truth Social (archived), labeling it “the highly controversial Cornell University rape case” and questioning why Hochul would appoint James.

For further reading, we previously reported Trump authentically expressed well wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell, the close associate of deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, prior to her conviction on federal sex-trafficking charges.

Prince William and Kate’s children ditch their royal titles for surprisingly casual school names

Prince William and Princess Kate’s three children reportedly ditch their formal titles for something a little more casual while at school.

Being part of the British monarchy means Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are some of the most famous kids in the world, but it seems when they’re at school they’d rather not stand out.

According to Hello! magazine, this means that the trio drop the Prince and Princess titles and instead simply go by George Wales, Charlotte Wales and Louis Wales at school.

The surname Wales is, of course, a nod to their parents’ titles as Prince and Princess of Wales, which they were given following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

The children’s monikers follow part of a long-standing tradition in the royal family.

Both their dad William and uncle Prince Harry used the surname Wales as school, because their dad – the now-King Charles – was the Prince of Wales at the time.

Prior to using the last name Wales, the children were called George Cambridge, Charlotte Cambridge and Louis Cambridge – again, in a nod to their parents’ former titles of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince Harry’s children follow the same tradition

Much like their cousins, Harry’s children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet use the surname Sussex.

Harry and wife Meghan have the titles Duke and Duchess of Sussex and, in-keeping with that same time-honoured tradition, use it as their last name.

When the children were born, they were named Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor but when they became a Prince and Princess the surname was dropped.

The royal family’s website states: “The Queen’s descendants, other than those with the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince/Princess or female descendants who marry, would carry the name of Mountbatten-Windsor.”

Last year, Meghan confirmed her name and her children’s names on her Netflix show With Love Meghan.

Speaking to pal Mindy Kahling, she said: “It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.

“I share my name with my children. I didn’t know how meaningful that would be to me, but it just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name, our little family name.’”

She then addressed the discourse around her and her kids’ names in an interview with PEOPLE, explaining: “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognised how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that that is something about Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”

She went on to say that the name Sussex had become part of her ‘love story’ with husband Harry.

“I think as the kids get older, they’re so excited about, ‘Oh my gosh, Mama and Papa, how did you meet?’ I think that will come with time as they get older, but for right now a huge part of our love story is that we share the name Sussex,” she added.

Bitcoin Just Flashed a Second, Stronger Golden Cross: Here’s What That Means

    In brief

    • Bitcoin traded around $86,000 on Monday, roughly $1,200 below the $87,354 swing high that has capped the rally.
    • Macroeconomic winds have turned in Bitcoin’s favor, with potential future catalysts around the corner.
    • The daily chart has painted a decidedly bullish picture, with Bitcoin entering a second, stronger “golden cross.”

Bitcoin is starting the week on the front foot. It still can’t clear the ceiling, but investors have reason to be optimistic.

The top crypto asset traded around $86,100 on Monday morning, up 1.14% in 24 hours, with a market capitalization of $1.73 trillion. The entire crypto market is worth $2.94 trillion, up 1.36% on the day, and the Fear & Greed Index sits at 68, still in “greed” territory and stabilizing sentiment after a dip from “extreme greed” readings last month.

The spark was Friday’s jobs report, and it was ugly—for the economy, that is. U.S. employers added only 29,000 positions in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly a third of what economists expected. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2%.

Revisions made it worse. July was revised from a gain of 21,000 to a loss of 10,000 jobs, and August was cut from 162,000 to 133,000. Annual wage growth cooled to 3.0%.

Bad news for workers, good news for risk assets. That’s the weird math of this cycle.

The Federal Reserve raised rates a quarter point to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16 in a unanimous vote. A week before Friday’s report, bond traders gave an October hike a 64% chance. After it, those odds fell to roughly 16%-22%, depending on the snapshot.

It is the mirror image of last month. On September 4, a blowout August report sent Bitcoin sliding more than 2% to near $79,300 as hike bets rose. Bitcoin now trades about 8% above that level.

Stocks cheered too. The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,722.72, up 0.73%, while the Nasdaq gained 1.19% to 27,190.86 and the Dow added 0.49% to 51,176.96. Nvidia hit a fresh record high, and stock futures edged higher Sunday night.

Altcoins are mixed. Ethereum trades at $2,711, up 0.59%, and XRP is at $1.51, up 0.81%. Solana slipped 0.91% to $120.31. All the top 10 altcoins are in the green, but not a single one has moved more than 1%, except for Hyperliquid, which is up 3.68% on the day to $93.17 and 6% on the week.

ETF money is not fading either. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $189.84 million in net inflows on the latest daily reading, with total net assets at $101.1 billion, according to Decrypt data.

Bitcoin price: Rejected at the door, but pushing up with force

The chart explains the hesitation. On the daily time frame, the $87,354 high remains the line to beat.

Momentum is strong. The Relative Strength Index, which scores recent gains against losses on a 0-100 scale where readings above 70 are considered overbought, sits at 64.7 which is hot but not extremely overbought. The Average Directional Index, which measures trend strength regardless of direction and reads above 25 as a strong trend, is at 43.4.

Exponential moving averages, or EMAs, track the average price over a set number of days while giving more weight to recent days. A golden cross happens when a faster EMA climbs above a slower one. The chart shows the 50-day EMA (the average price of the last 50 days) above the 200-day EMA, the classic version of a golden cross. This happened in mid-September as Bitcoin registered the second best performance in that month, ever.

But an even stronger sign has just appeared as the 100-day EMA has now also crossed above the 200 day. You can see it in the following chart. The 100-day EMA being the dotted white line.

Why is the 100/200 cross even more bullish? Because it’s harder to fake. A sharp two-month bounce can drag the 50-day EMA over the 200 day. To pull the slower 100-day EMA over the 200 day, the price of Bitcoin has to stay elevated for months, which means BTC has not just bounced from the sub-$60,000 levels of July but rebuilt its medium-term trend.

Together, the two crosses mean the short-term and medium-term averages both sit above the long-term one. Think of it as a second confirmation of the same story. The catch: EMAs lag, so a golden cross confirms a move that has already happened rather than predicting the next one.

On Myriad, a prediction market built by Decrypt‘s parent company Dastan, traders are leaning bullish on a short-term push. In the October highs market, an $87,500 touch trades at 80%, $90,000 at 59%, $95,000 at 25%, and $100,000 at 12%.

As far as future catalysts, the week’s calendar is short but loaded. The Fed releases the minutes of its September meeting on Wednesday, October 7, at 2:00 p.m. ET, and the BLS publishes September CPI on October 14. The Fed’s next policy meeting runs October 27-28, with a press conference on October 28 at 2:30 p.m. ET.

  • Amber Heard shares rare insight into life after moving to another country with new name

Amber Heard shares rare insight into life after moving to another country with new name

It’s been three years since Amber Heard disappeared from Hollywood but she’s now given a rare update on her life away from the silver screen.

The American actress was at the centre of perhaps the biggest celebrity court case in history when she accused her ex-husband Johnny Depp of multiple instances of domestic abuse and sexual assault during their relationship.

However, it would be the Pirates of the Caribbean actor who won the legal battle, successfully suing his ex-wife of defamation in the process and claiming over $10 million in damages, after a jury found that Heard’s op-ed in the Washington Post about domestic violence contained statements that were false, defamatory, and made with malice, following the intense six-week court case in 2022.

Although it meant that Heard’s career on the screen seemed to be over, with her last, admittedly brief, appearance coming in the second Aquaman film, it seems for all intents and purposes that the 40-year-old is loving her new life in Europe.

She sold her California home months after Depp triumphed in the defamation trial and headed to Spain and turned her back on fame, even reportedly changing her name to Martha Jane Cannary in an attempt to cut ties with her past.

While she was already a mother to Oonah Paige, in 2025 she announced she had welcomed twins – daughter Agnes and son Ocean, and it seems that she and her three kids are living a beautiful life in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Her Instagram posts don’t come with the same regularity as other celebrities but she does provide updates on her life, and the latest saw her complete a half-marathon in San Sebastian, following in the footsteps of nearly everyone else who is obsessed with running these days.

She’s certainly committed herself to Spanish culture as well, as she used the notoriously difficult basque language in her Instagram post, writing: “Eskerrik asko Donosti!” This translates as ‘thank you very much San Sebastian’.

Although we haven’t seen her on our TV screens in a while, Heard hasn’t lost her love of acting either, with reports suggesting that she starred as Genevieve in a theatre production of Spirit of the People, written by Jeremy O. Harris.

Considering Heard actually took home over $2 million in damages from the defamation trial of her own, despite losing, it’s unlikely that she’s going to be struggling for money and it seems as if she’s spent it wisely so far.

Perhaps more Hollywood actors will follow suit and opt for the quieter life away from the spotlight, because although we can’t judge a whole life from social media, everything we’ve seen from the Texas-born actress in the last few years suggests that she’s certainly doing something right.

  • Kemi Badenoch promises £10 billion ‘Britannia Shield’ to protect UK from missile and drone attack

Kemi Badenoch promises £10 billion ‘Britannia Shield’ to protect UK from missile and drone attack

The UK is to be protected by an ‘Iron Dome’ defence designed to prevent air attack, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has promised.

Under the £10 billion system – which has been called ‘Britannia Shield’ – Army bases, nuclear sites, power plants and population centres will be protected from rockets and drones launched against Britain by its enemies, reports the Daily Mail.

There would be a network of command and control communication systems, radar, interceptors and anti-drone hardware – much like that already used by Israel.

The Conservatives argue the proposed system is needed because Labour has failed to spend the target 3 percent of GDP on defence, leaving the country open to attack by nations such as Iran and Russia, they argue.

Mrs Badenoch said, “The world will not wait for Britain to get ready. War has returned to Europe. Missiles and drones are transforming warfare in the Middle East. Cheap weapons can now threaten cities, military bases and critical infrastructure in ways that would have sounded like science fiction a generation ago.

“If a missile or drone is launched at Britain, we do not get a second chance to wish we had prepared.

“That is why we are announcing Britannia Shield: a new national missile-and-drone defence system to protect the whole United Kingdom, our sovereign territories and British bases overseas.”

The promise made at the Conservative Party Conference being held in Birmingham this week, comes as tensions between Russia and the West continue to heighten.

On Monday Russian drones targeted Moldova when projectiles from a Russian attack on Ukraine hit a bus carrying passengers across the border.

Kaja Kallas, EU foreign policy chief said: “Europe has seen a spike in the Russian hybrid attacks and sabotage attempts and airspace violations in recent weeks.

“Russian missiles and drones violated Moldovan airspace again over the weekend. This is completely unacceptable.”

The Tories have promised to fund a £10 billion increase in defence spending each year they are in government through cuts to welfare – and believe the new shield could be operational within five years of a Conservative government.

The pledge follows a Commons defence committee found last year that Britain had ‘next to nothing’ when compared to other NATO countries when it came to air defence.

The current chief of the British army said the country needs to be ready to fight a land war, and that could mean a 'citizen army' where members of the public are trained.

James Cartlidge, Tory defence spokesman, added: “With a £10 billion budget, this would be one of Britain’s most significant military programmes since the Cold War.

“But one that is totally necessary because of the threats we face. And only possible because of our willingness to take the tough decisions to fund defence.”

A Labour spokesman said: “Andy Burnham’s Labour government is delivering the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War. Keeping Britain safe is the first priority of this Government.”
