Josh Gad to Join Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Ocean’s’ Prequel (EXCLUSIVE)

Josh Gad is the latest to join Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper‘s crew for their forthcoming “Ocean’s 11” prequel at Warner Bros, sources told Variety.

Gad has booked a significant role in the period heist film, the sources added, and joins a starry ensemble led by Robbie and her director-costar Cooper. Casting has been coming at a steady clip as the film heads toward production. Reps for Gad and Warner Bros. Pictures did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Since the original 1960 film, “Ocean’s 11” — which starred Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford and Dean Martin — the high-class heist movie franchise has attracted A-list and award-winning talent. Warners’ latest installment is no exception, with Oscar nominees Wagner Moura (“The Secret Agent”), who is set to play the villain, and Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”) also signing on to the cast.

Gad adds the “Oceans” prequel to a schedule that includes the anticipated “Space Balls: The New One” from Paramount Pictures, sequels to the animated franchises “Angry Birds” and “Frozen,” and the feature adaptation of “Oh, The Places You Will Go” with Ariana Grande. He also recently re-upped his overall TV deal with 20th Century Television.

Details about the “Ocean’s” prequel film have been scarce, but Robbie confirmed a few key points during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation this spring.

“Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows — his parents,” Robbie teased, referencing the con-man and ringleader of the Las Vegas casino caper in “Ocean’s 11.” “You’ll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.”

Further plot details are “locked in the vault,” but Cooper wrote the screenplay and is directing the film, dated for release on June 25, 2027. He is also producing the project alongside LuckyChap, the company led by Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, Milan Popelka and Robbie.

Executive producers for the “Ocean’s” prequel include McNamara, Bronte Payne, Bobby Wilhelm, Jay Roach, Michelle Graham, Lee Isaac Chung, Ashley Jay Sandberg, Gary Ross and Olivia Milch. The untitled film is based on characters created by George Clayton Johnson and Jack Golden Russell. Carrie Solomon handled previous drafts of the screenplay.

The Steven Soderbergh-directed “Ocean’s Eleven” trilogy, starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, plus the “Ocean’s Eight” reboot with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna, have earned more than $1.4 billion at the global box office.

Gad is repped by WME, Range Media Partners, PJ Shapiro and imPRint.
