Box Office: ‘Scary Movie’ Makes $7.7 Million in Previews, ‘Masters of the Universe’ at $4.4 Million

Another scary movie is coming to the box office — but there should be more laughs than screams coming from theatergoers.

The latest horror parody in Paramount and Miramax’s “Scary Movie” franchise is hitting theaters this weekend and has made $7.7 million in previews. Paramount is projecting a $40 million opening for “Scary Movie,” though other estimates are between $45 million and $50 million. If lots of horror fans turn out to see just how their beloved films, like “Weapons,” “Longlegs,” “Sinners” and more, are parodied, then this “Scary Movie” could set a franchise record (beating 2006’s “Scary Movie 4” which opened with $49.7 million). It may also swipe the box office crown from last week’s winner, fellow horror movie “Backrooms,” which is targeting $48 million to $50 million in its second weekend.

After originally directing, writing and starring in the first two films, the Wayans brothers are back for the first time since 2001’s “Scary Movie 2.” Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Craig Wayans wrote the script, while Marlon and Shawn are back along with original stars Regina Hall and Anna Faris. It’s been 13 years since the last “Scary Movie,” and the parody masters return to tackle recent hits like “Terrifier,” “Smile,” “Wednesday,” “Get Out” and many more — nothing is safe. Miramax financed the film for $30 million, so it should scare up a nice profit.

Amazon MGM’s “Masters of the Universe” is also opening this weekend and made $4.4 million in previews. It’s projected to launch with $30 million to $35 million and carries a $200 million budget. Nicholas Galitzine stars as the super-strong prince He-Man, who must return to his original home of Eternia and defeat the evil Skeleotor, played by Jared Leto. Directed by Travis Knight, the movie also stars Idris Elba, Camila Mendes and Alison Brie as Man-at-Arms, Teela and Evil-Lyn.
