Everything is squared away for the highly anticipated sequel to the hit “Minecraft” movie, which is now officially titled “A Minecraft Movie Squared.”
“A Minecraft Movie,” Warner Bros. and Legendary’s PG adventure headlined by Jack Black and Jason Momoa, dominated the spring 2025 box office. The film — which follows a group of misfits who are pulled through a portal into a cubic world and guided by an expert crafter named Steve (played by Black) — debuted to a record $163 million domestic opening and ultimately grossed $960 million worldwide. Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry and Jennifer Coolidge also starred in the movie, based on the massively popular video game.
Production is currently underway for the sequel, with Jared Hess returning to direct and Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst joining the cast. Hess also co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Galletta. “A Minecraft Movie Squared” is dated for theatrical release on July 23, 2027.
Warner Bros. and Legendary revealed the title treatment on Saturday to kick off a contest for creators to build a design that could be featured in the movie or the end credits. The winner of the challenge will also get to attend a private screening of the sequel with their friends. More details about the contest can be found on Minecraft’s website.
Producers for the “Minecraft” sequel include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Momoa and the late Jill Messick. Executive producers are Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg and Jonathan Spaihts.
