‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Movie in the Works From ‘Ready or Not’ Directors Radio Silence

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence, will bring “Choose Your Own Adventure,” the popular children’s gamebook series, to the big screen for 20th Century Studios.

The duo will work with “Andor” and “The Disaster Artist” screenwriter Tom Bissell on the project. The books were nonlinear and allowed readers to select a series of different narrative options that would allow them to determine how the plot of a story would unfold. At a time before video games had come of age, the interactivity seemed revolutionary. The novels were a big hit with readers, selling more than 250 million copies between 1979 and 1998. It’s appropriate that 20th Century Studios is bringing this to cinemas because that’s around the era when the books were at their zenith.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett helped bring the “Ready or Not” films to the big screen, though the franchise sputtered out when its most recent entry, “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” whiffed at the box office. They also helped rejuvenate the “Scream” franchise, overseeing the popular fifth and sixth films in the series. Radio Silence gained attention after directing segments of 2012’s “V/H/S.” Next up is a new installment in “The Mummy” franchise, that will see original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return as an tomb raiding couple. Radio Silence is represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

Bissell is the author of 11 books. He also co-created the Apple TV+ series “The Mosquito Coast,” and worked on such video games as the fourth and fifth installments of “Gears of War” and “Uncharted 4.” He is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, and Yorn Levine.

Deadline first reported that a “Choose Your Own Adventure” movie was in the works.
