Paris-based Films du Losange has boarded international sales on “El Dorado,” a psychological thriller from rising French filmmaker Lola Quivoron, starring Matthias Schoenaerts, Mallory Wanecque, Antonia Buresi and Samuel Kircher.
“El Dorado” marks the sophomore outing of Quivoron, whose breakout feature “Rodeo” world premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section in 2022 where it won the Coup de Coeur award. The production, which shot across the mountainous rural landscapes of the Luberon region, has just wrapped.
Described as a fast-paced psychological thriller blending family drama with environmental crime, “El Dorado” centers on Yolaine, a young woman who became hearing-impaired following a childhood accident. Torn between her mother’s isolated sheep farm and the orbit of her father Jean, she is gradually pulled into his dangerous world of illegal land-filling schemes known as “déballes.” As she becomes increasingly entangled in his seductive yet unstable universe, she begins uncovering the lies and manipulations underpinning his life, leading to a decisive rupture.
In her notes, Quivoron described the film as an expansive thriller driven by emotional tension and ambiguity, anchored by the shifting father-daughter relationship at its core. Jean, she said, is conceived as a charismatic yet violent man whose craving for social recognition fuels his gradual loss of control.
“El Dorado” is produced by Charles Gillibert for CG Cinema, whose current slate includes “Minotaur” by Andrey Zvyagintsev and “Shana” by Lila Pinell, both selected at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film is co-produced by Wrong Men, with France 2 Cinéma and Canal+ rounding out the financing. French distribution will be handled by Ad Vitam.
