Dad responds after being reported to child services for bringing son, 7, on hike

A man has opened up about the online trolling he has received after he and his wife take their children with them on challenging hikes.

Colorado dad-of-four Joe Evermore says his seven-year-old son has become the youngest person ever to climb 3,000-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park back in May.

However, the 44-year-old says that viewers online have opted to call Child Protective Services on him and his wife Anne Evermore, 39.

“There’s people that think, ‘Hey, your kids would be better put in a foster system’ or put in front of a television, rather than training daily for an epic mission,” the entrepreneur told PEOPLE.

Although CPS has been forced to review multiple complaints, they have declined to pursue them.

“There’s people that think, ‘Hey, your kids would be better put in a foster system’ or put in front of a television, rather than training daily for an epic mission,” the father adds.

“They just don’t understand what’s dangerous and what’s not dangerous.

“It’s kind of like someone who says, ‘How can you go on a plane? What if the wings fall off?’ It’s like, no, you’re not even thinking about the actual dangers of the sport.”

While videos of the climbs can look scary on social media, he believes modern climbing systems are far safer than most people realise.

He said: “The biggest danger isn’t actually falling because the gear is incredibly strong.

“What worries me more is someone dropping a rock or a water bottle from above – something the size of a fist could kill somebody.”

Each year, one of his sons are given a major challenge designed to push them beyond their comfort zone.

The rules are that it has to be difficult, remarkable – but safe.

With Anne now pregnant with the couple’s fifth child – a girl – the family is preparing for its next chapter.

And while Joe jokes he may need to learn a few new parenting skills, there is one thing he is certain about.

He said: “She’s definitely going to climb too. We’ve had so many dads tell us they’ve been inspired by what we’re doing.

“If I can encourage other fathers to get outside, go camping and do something adventurous with their kids, that’s a win.”

Joe believes the extreme adventures are helping transform his kids into ‘confident’ adults.

  • Leaked Christa Pike photo after botched execution could explain why she survived lethal injection

Leaked Christa Pike photo after botched execution could explain why she survived lethal injection

Following Christa Pike’s controversial failed execution, a graphic photo has allegedly emerged, showing the damage the lethal injection had done to her body.

Pike execution attempt has been in the news plenty of times in the week since she was taken to hospital for ‘live-saving’ measures on 30 September.

But the details keep coming, which have revealed the extent of her some of her injuries after being injected with two shots of pentobarbital, in accordance with the state’s backup protocol if one injection fails.

Pike, 50, was supposed to become the first woman put to death in Tennessee in two centuries after being sent to prison for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer.

Her execution via lethal injection was lined up and ready to go, as Pike said her her final words in the execution chamber.

“I’m going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life, and that is with love,” she said in the room. “I’m at peace, I’m ready to be free. This is a happy day.”

However, according to some who were there, Pike began to complain of pain in her arm, stating: “My arm feels like it’s about to burst open.”

She then asked: “Does this happen like that?”

Shockingly, it was described that despite being dosed with two loads of pentobarbital she was still alive and had been rushed to hospital, where she ‘remains critically ill‘.

In the most recent health update from her legal time, they shared Pike ‘may not fully recover’.

In the aftermath, the Tennessee Department of Correction said it had followed ‘every step’ of the standard protocol, while Tennessee’s prisons chief Frank Strada announced he was stepping down from the role.

At the moment, the state has paused all executions as it launches an investigation into Pike’s situation – which has now been revealed further with the emergence of an apparent image of her injured arm.

Radar Online claims to have an image that was allegedly leaked from inside the Tennessee Department of Correction by a source.

According to the outlet, it shows Pike’s severely bruised arm caused by internal bleeding from the elbow downward.

However, the Radar Online will not publish the image.

They say the picture shows Pike’s alleged ‘nearly purple’ arm, but this is not verified.

But the description of said photo adds further insight into the condition previously told by her lawyers as having been ‘swollen, burned, and blistered’.

Her legal team claim seven needles entered Pike’s arms in an attempt to find a suitable vein.

However, per the outlet, the apparent source claimed: “The needle blew her vein, causing the chemicals to go to the muscle.”

They also claimed Pike had ‘stroke-like symptoms.’

However, none of this has been confirmed by Pike’s legal team, nor the state.

Just weeks in the run up to the scheduled execution date, Pikes representatives fought to stay her execution due to fears that a blood-clotting disorder and notably thin veins could present a problem in the execution chamber.

At the time, they said it could expose her to unnecessary pain.

LADbible reached out to the Tennessee Department of Correction for comment.

  • Why possible pneumonic plague outbreak could look very different to Covid as fears grow

Why possible pneumonic plague outbreak could look very different to Covid as fears grow

After the trauma of the Coronavirus pandemic back in 2019, many fear the worst when they hear about a potential outbreak.

Darya Shipilova, an employee at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, died recently after she was exposed to plague bacteria, having broken a test tube in the lab where she worked.

Although her cause of death has not yet been 100 per cent confirmed, the ‘live bacteria’ inside the test tube has got a lot of people concerned, especially considering the severe pneumonia of an ‘unknown origin’ which she was suffering from in hospital before she passed away at the end of September.

The word quarantine is enough to strike fear into our hearts and we would be right to be worried if the outbreak was indeed ‘pneumonic plague‘, as several outlets are reporting this week.

The US are said to be aware of the situation but considering the survival rate is near zero without treatment, it could cause devastation if it does turn into a full-blown pandemic, with emergency antibiotics often the only hope of preventing death.

    Daria Shipilova has died (Facebook)

Dr Simon Clarke, associate professor in cellular microbiology in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Reading, has allayed fears somewhat with his expert commentary, where he highlights exactly how this potential outbreak would be very different to what we all saw seven years ago.

He said: “Reports from Russia have inevitably drawn comparisons with Covid-19, but it is important to remember that pneumonic plague is a very different disease. It is caused by bacteria, Yersinia pestis, famous for causing the Black Death, that remains with us today mostly in animals across parts of Asia, Africa and the Americas.

“Pneumonic plague is particularly serious because it means the infection has reached the lungs and is nearly always fatal if not treated promptly. Unlike the bubonic plague which enters the body via infected flea bites, pneumonic plague can spread between people through respiratory droplets during close contact.

“Unlike many viral respiratory diseases, plague is caused by bacteria and is generally treatable with antibiotics if identified quickly.”

While both illnesses can be passed through respiratory droplets and close contact, Covid did not originate from bacterium and couldn’t be treated with antibiotics in the same way.

Russia has also acted quickly by putting around 200 different people into quarantine after they came into close contact with Shipilova, but so far the public health service has only conceded that she died of ‘pneumonia of undetermined origin’.

Despite the White House also describing it as an ‘outbreak’ in its official statement, Dr Clarke is less convinced and suggests that ‘an awful lot must have gone wrong for a lab worker to be infected by a broken test tube’.

He added: “Having worked in high-containment laboratories, I know that handling dangerous pathogens involves multiple layers of protection, strict procedures, safety cabinets, airflow systems and careful procedures carried out by well-trained staff. Lab-acquired infections are rare events, and a broken tube would not automatically lead to exposure or infection. We also don’t tend to use test tubes very much.

“Until more details emerge, it is difficult to assess whether this represents an isolated case, an occupational exposure, or evidence of wider transmission.

“Transparency, rapid diagnosis and effective contact tracing would be the most important factors in managing an outbreak.”

  • How pneumonic plague spreads after worker dies from disease in ‘Russian lab accident’

How pneumonic plague spreads after worker dies from disease in ‘Russian lab accident’

Hundreds have been placed into quarantine after a young lab worker died from an unknown illness.

Darya Shipilova, an employee at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, was exposed to plague bacteria after she ‘accidentally broke a test tube’ the Kyiv Independent reported.

Reports suggested she was collecting samples in the laboratory, which contained the pathogen, when the incident occurred.

Local media has reported how Shipilova told medical staff she had accidentally broken a test tube ‘holding live bacteria.’

She was taken to hospital on 29 September with severe pneumonia of ‘unknown origin’. She was put on a ventilator but was later confirmed dead.

Authorities are now implementing a ‘comprehensive set of anti-epidemic measures,’ according to Maxim Modin, the mayor of the Shelekhovsky district in eastern Russia.

Two hundred people she came into contact with are now being closely monitored.

The inpatient facility at the hospital where Shipilova was treated has since been placed under quarantine, as well as other hospitals in the region, according to local reports.

Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev issued a message on Telegram where he urged residents to remain calm. He confirmed that an anti-epidemic commission had met to address a ‘suspected case of a particularly dangerous infection’.

Russia however have not confirmed any sort of ‘outbreak’, with the public health service conceding that the lab technician died of ‘pneumonia of undetermined origin’.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian agency that handles infectious disease, ‘no microorganisms associated with the employee’s professional duties were detected in samples taken from the patient’.

However the Moscow Times have reported that 189 people suspected of having the plague have been identified and hospitalised, as they remain under close watch.

The White House has also issued a statement, which read: “The Trump administration is aware of the outbreak, is monitoring it, and is evaluating options.”

What are the signs and how does it spread?

The pneumonic plague causes a severe lung infection, along with fever, shortness of breath and can result in coughing up blood.

It is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and results in a disease which is almost always fatal if left untreated.

Although antibiotics can reduce this rate and it is treatable providing antibiotics are administered within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, according to the World Health Organisation.

It is highly contagious, and unlike the more common bubonic plague, which is transmitted via flea bites, it can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets.

These can be passed on through coughing or sneezing.

  • Horrifying simulation shows what would happen if the Earth stopped spinning

Horrifying simulation shows what would happen if the Earth stopped spinning

Imagine you’re sitting at home, sipping the perfect cuppa, and suddenly the world stops spinning – what do you think would happen next?

Well, according to a simulation that has been posted online for all to see, it’s not a great process.

While there isn’t currently any known mechanism that could stop Earth from spinning, that doesn’t mean an unknown object could do that very thing in the future.

And if it does happen, then there will be quite a few things that happen to everyone living on Earth – and none of them are pleasant.

According to Lunar Cheeseee on TikTok, the world wouldn’t just stop to a firm halt immediately.

First, it would begin to slow from its current speed of 1037 miles per hour east on the equator.

What would happen if the world stopped? (Getty Stock Images)

What would happen if the world stopped? (Getty Stock Images)

Almost immediately, cracks would begin to form on the pavement around you, and your ability to stand upright without falling would become nearly impossible as small objects fly past.

Once speeds get down to 1028, that’s when the terror truly begins.

Per the simulation, which shows people on a street surrounded by businesses, the buildings and street signs start to peel away and fly east – and so do the people.

At 800 miles per hour, structures crumble and slide along the ground as the world’s population is propelled away, travelling at incredible speeds while the Earth remains rooted to the spot.

700 miles an hour and skyscrapers are next to fall, and there’s practically no person visible as the heavier objects are ripped from their spot on the world.

At between 300 and 200 miles, the simulation claims that the ‘wind is now faster than sound’ and all you can see is debris whipping past before finally, cargo ships and oceans crash past.

You might be wondering why everything keeps moving when the Earth itself stops.

That’s because, like when you brake suddenly in a car, the force of your momentum continues to propel you. Which is why you need a seat belt to hold you back.

However, if you move toward the poles, you will feel the impact of the force less and less because each point is a at higher latitude.

For example, in New York City, the surface speed is around 790 miles per hour, and at the poles, the Earth’s rotation is essentially zero, because they are at the planet’s axis of rotation.

So, in theory, if you were situated at either pole, you might not notice what’s going on until the oceans are crashing through.

Because of this, people online have commented under the simulation video that being at the poles could bring a person a chance of survival.

However, that’s not to say the poles would remain unscathed considering everything on Earth is propelling itself East. That’s a lot of speed, and weight, which could do something like shift tectonic plates, and more.

“So much water would be displaced onto the continents and back that you’d definitely experience a tsunami,” said one person.

“And this is the ‘gradual’ stop. Imagine just suddenly stopping down to 0. Every single object is now a ballistic missile,” said another.

  • Tragedy of man who died aged 23 after stomach ache turned out to be rare cancer

Tragedy of man who died aged 23 after stomach ache turned out to be rare cancer

A man whose stomach ache turned out to be a rare cancer has tragically died aged 23 following a gruelling battle.

Nickodemus Dacres was diagnosed with stage four medullary renal cell carcinoma (RMC) last year.

RMC is one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of kidney cancer which predominantly affects adolescents and young adults with sickle cell trait or disease.

The symptoms started when Dacres, from Croydon in south London, began suffering with stomach pain at work. However he then started to urinate blood.

The stomach ache was a clear sign he had RMC and he was diagnosed in February of last year.

He had been in and out of hospital ever since with mum Donna Dacres, 59, who remained at his side until he tragically passed away on September 26.

“He was such a bubbly young man”

Donna explained how the chemotherapy he had been undergoing, which had left her feeling optimistic, ended up causing liver failure.

She said: “He was such a bubbly young man. He had a heart of gold and he loved to give.

“As a mum, nothing prepares you for watching your child suffer knowing there is so little you can do to take the pain away.”

Donna said that she was told this cancer is only shared by nine other people in the UK. According to the Ricky Casey Trust, the true prevalence of RMC around the world is not known.

Nickodemus underwent various treatments (Donna Dacres / SWNS)

Nickodemus started getting extreme stomach pain while on shift in July 2024 but did not think much of it.

However, when he went to the bathroom and tried to urinate, blood came out instead, and he was rushed to A&E by a colleague.

For months he went through tests until eventually a scan uncovered a small tumour in his right kidney.

The lump continued growing along with the pain, and in December 2024 surgeons decided to remove the kidney and several lymph nodes to do some tests.

But in February, doctors delivered the devastating cancer diagnosis. By the time it was discovered, the cancer had already spread beyond his kidney to his lymph nodes and lungs.

Despite chemotherapy, it continued to progress to his liver and bones, and he was relentlessly vomiting, dropping from 74kg to less than 55kg.

Donna said: “Watching that energetic, independent young man become so poorly has been absolutely heartbreaking.

    Other symptoms appeared during treatment

After fundraising to afford targeted chemotherapy for the cancer, which is not routinely funded by the NHS, things started looking up and Donna thought her son would survive.

For weeks Nickodemus was no longer vomiting, and doctors said the treatment was working. But, other symptoms started appearing such as dark urine, shoulder pain, jaundiced eyes, and even black vomit.

Donna asked the doctors if something was wrong with his liver, but several scans revealed that his liver hadn’t changed.

Donna has spoken of her heartbreak (Donna Dacres / SWNS)

Donna has spoken of her heartbreak (Donna Dacres / SWNS)

Whilst Donna was on a church conference last week, it was the first time she had left her son.

However by Saturday morning, she had received a call from Nickodemus telling her things ‘were bad’

However, the doctors called before she made it there, with the heartbreaking news that her son had passed away and that his liver had failed.

She said: “I just started to scream. I love him so much. He is my only son here, I don’t have anybody.

“I had no indication that he was going to die. The one time I left him in over two years. I went to church and he died. He died by himself.”

Now the mum is raising money to cover his funeral and is encouraging other young people to get checked out.

She added: “Young black guys need to go to their GP regularly to get checked. If you notice any abdominal pain do not ignore it.”

According to the Ricky Casey Trust, RMC requires an entirely distinct medical approach because it does not respond to typically clear cell renal cell carcinoma treatments.

Common symptoms are blood in the urine, which is typically the first sign, persistent pain or discomfort in the side, back, or abdomen around the kidney area and other signs such as unexplained weight loss, a palpable abdominal mass and fatigue.

Search for bodies comes to end after plane with six on board vanishes off US coast

A chilling update has been issued after a medical transport aircraft with six on board suddenly went missing over the weekend, sparking a major search.

The plane had departed from Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport at 11.40pm local time on Friday (2 October), according to flight data from FlightAware.

The Latitude Air Ambulance aircraft had been due to land at Boston’s Logan International airport at 1.30am, but never made it. Four Canadian nationals and two Bermudian nationals were onboard.

Two pilots and two medical staff had flown to Bermuda to collect a patient and their relative.

The aircraft, a Gulfstream G100 instead vanished off the US coast. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) notified the Coast Guard that it had lost contact with the aircraft.

The flight path showed where the aircraft was last recorded location before it vanished.

It indicated the jet was flying at around 24,000ft before descending 13,000ft in about two minutes shortly before the flight controllers then lost contact.

The pilot had reportedly declared an emergency and reported electrical problems as the aircraft approached the coast.

The audio, since shared by LiveATC.net, had indicated that the pilot may have been ‘coming in blind’ when a storm loomed ahead shortly before it vanished.

A major search was launched in an area off the coast of Nantucket, before the Coastguard said a ‘debris field’ was found, which is an area where scattered pieces, fragments, or wreckage from a destroyed object or structure are found.

    Chilling update on ‘heartbreaking reality’

The six people on board the medical aircraft are now presumed dead, according to a new statement from the flight’s operator.

On Sunday evening (4 October), the United States Coast Guard announced it was ending its search for survivors off the coast of the Massachusetts island.

“The Coast Guard has suspended the search for the people aboard the medical transport aircraft that went missing around 2 a.m. Saturday, as of sunset, after continuous searching by the Coast Guard and partner agencies,” a statement posted on X read.

“We express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones.”

Latitude Air Ambulance meanwhile issued a statement on the ‘heartbreaking reality’ of the situation, explaining: “We must now face the heartbreaking reality that the four members of our Latitude team, our patient and the patient’s family escort, who were aboard Heartbeat 104, are presumed to have died.

“Our thoughts are first and foremost with their families, loved ones, friends, and colleagues.”

Peter Byl, President of Latitude Air Ambulance added: “This is an unimaginable loss for our Latitude family and for everyone who loved the six people aboard Heartbeat 104.

“Our focus now is on supporting their families, supporting our people and assisting the authorities.

“We will honour our colleagues by remembering the care, professionalism, and commitment they brought to their work every day.”

Latitude said in its statement that it would continue to cooperate with authorities amid ongoing recovery efforts and investigations into what happened.

“Determining the circumstances and cause of an aviation accident is a careful and methodical process, and we will not speculate about what occurred,” the company said.

  • Urban explorers make horrific discovery inside abandoned house

Urban explorers make horrific discovery inside abandoned house

A group of urban explorers say they made a horrific discovery while looking around an abandoned old property near Somerset.

The groups, who share their explorations online under the names mission_urbex and Just Looking Explores, said when they first came across the old house they noticed a door at the rear of the property had been damaged, leaving it wide open so they decided to leave and explore an abandoned hotel nearby.

However, in a post shared on Facebook back in August, the group said the property, which they dubbed ‘John’s House’, continued to ‘play on [their] minds’, so they went back for another look.

After entering the house, the urban explorers said they found ‘everything’ still in its place, with coats and hats hung near the door and ‘everyday belongings’ filling the rooms.

“Outside, John’s little red car sat rotting away, clearly having not moved for years,” they wrote.

“The whole time we were taking photos, we felt on edge because we still weren’t sure whether the house was actually abandoned.”

But as they ventured further into the house, they made the horrific discovery of the former owner’s deceased body.

“We immediately called the emergency services, and the police and ambulance attended,” they wrote.

“What started as a normal explore became something neither of us will ever forget.”

The pair said that although the discovery was ‘horrible’ they were glad they went back when they did ‘otherwise, who knows how much longer John could have been there before somebody found him’.

The photographers also shared several images from the home, showing pictures hanging on the wall, a large collection of VHS tapes, and an unmade bed.

The post garnered a mixed-reaction, with some social media users praising them and their urban exploring for helping make the discovery, while others said the post was disrespectful.

One said: “Thank goodness you did follow instincts. Well done team.”

Another commented: “This is so sad. Thank God you went back, who knows how much longer he’d have been there otherwise.”

However, others suggested the post shouldn’t have been shared, with one person branding it ‘disgusting’.

Someone else commented: “Heartbreaking, his privacy was violated like this.”

And a third said the post was not ‘very respectful at all’, adding: “Not everything needs to be done on a public platform, this is one of the reasons social media can be so harmful.”

In a follow-up, mission_urbex hit back at the criticism, saying nothing they had posted had been done to ‘disrespect’ John.

They wrote: “People can be living alone, die in their homes and remain undiscovered because nobody realises they’re gone. If anything positive comes from sharing this, hopefully it makes someone think twice and check in on an elderly or lonely neighbour they haven’t seen for a while.

“I meant John no disrespect. I’m actually glad we followed our gut and went back, because otherwise, who knows how much longer he could have been there.”

They also explained that they refused to share any further details on where the property was to avoid others visiting.

James Bulger’s father ‘absolutely raging’ at parole board decision over Jon Venables hearing

The father of James Bulger has said the decision to hold his killer’s parole hearing in private is ‘an insult’ in a scathing response and described the decision as ‘trampling over the toddler’s grave’.

Child killer Jon Venables, who tortured and murdered two-year-old James back in 1993, will have his bid for freedom heard by parole chiefs at an oral hearing more than two years after his last appeal.

But the Parole Board recently decided the hearing would be held in private, despite calls from James’s family and a number of media organisations that it be held in public.

James’s father Ralph, 59, told The Sun on Sunday: “I’m absolutely raging at this. Our feelings and emotions don’t matter to faceless parole chiefs although we were given assurances we could attend.

Parole Board hearings are usually held in private, but they can be made public ‘in the interests of justice’.

“It’s an insult and like trampling over James’s grave,” Mr Bulger added.

“Once again it’s all about looking after child killer and paedophile Venables while James’s family are tossed aside like the rubbish.”

James’s mother, Denise Fergus, had previously demanded that the hearing be held in public to help combat ‘misinformation’ about the case.

She argued that holding a public hearing could improve general understanding of the parole process and would have made her ‘finally feel listened to’.

However the Parole Board said a public hearing would make it ‘very difficult’ for 44-year-old Venables to give evidence because he could be ‘being listened to by people who are seeking to get information so that they can kill him’.

He has been given a new identity and anonymity from the public, with a ban in place on sharing anything that could identify him.

“He’s a coward, and is still a danger to children,” Mr Bulger told the newspaper. “If the Parole Board buckle, I urge Andy Burnham to step in and block his release.”

At Venables’ latest parole hearing in 2023, the Parole Board rejected the bid and found he still posed a danger to children and could go on to offend again.

Venables was jailed alongside Robert Thompson after the pair of 10-year-olds snatched James from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside, in February 1993.

Venables was released on licence in July 2001 and recalled to prison in February 2010 after indecent images of children were found on his computer.

He was once again freed in August 2013 and then called back in November 2017 for the same offence, with parole judges considering his case again in September 2020.

A spokesperson for Ms Fergus previously said her application to observe the hearing had been granted.

Victims have been able to attend parole hearings held in private under reforms rolled out nationally in April as part of efforts to boost confidence in the justice system.
