We’re in the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month. It officially kicked off on September 15th, celebrating the history and cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans whose roots trace back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. On Tubi, they’re celebrating with free movies and shows.
Jennifer Lopez scored her first lead role with the 1997 Selena
The streaming service has a section dedicated to Hispanic Heritage Month, featuring some of the most groundbreaking Latino films, as well as some really fun entries, satisfying all sorts of viewers. There are also plenty of family titles, making movie night with kids a perfect option for your weekend.
Everything is free to watch, requiring no subscription. Many titles are available in English, in Spanish, or both. They include Jennifer Lopez‘s beloved breakout film, “Selena,” Robert Rodriguez’s “El Mariachi” and its sequel, “Desperado,” which starred Antonio Banderas and gave Salma Hayek her Hollywood breakout, and more.
There’s also “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” the blockbuster film starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, directed by Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona.
Hispanic Heritage Month began in the late ’60s, under Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency, as a week-long celebration. Two decades later, it was expanded into a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan, giving people more time to recognize the contributions made by Latinos and Hispanics in the country.
Today, Latinos are the largest racial or ethnic minority in the country, making up 21% of the total U.S. population, or about one in five Americans. The month’s timing isn’t random. September 15 is the anniversary of independence for numerous Latin countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their own independence on September 16 and 18.
The next few weeks make the perfect excuse to revisit a classic or introduce kids to a title that your grandma or your dad hasn’t stopped talking about. Best of all, it’s free!
Verity feels like one of the films of the moment. Starring Anne Hathaway in the titular role after a banner year of amazing acting work, the film is a dark romance from BookTok queen Colleen Hoover. She’s the writer behind book-to-screen adaptations like “It Ends With Us” and “Reminders of Him,” but this book marks her darkest adaptation yet. If you need more reasons to watch, it also stars Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, and the three are involved in a complex love triangle.
Directed by Michael Showalter, “Verity” follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer hired to finish the bestselling series of Verity Crawford (Hathaway), who was left paralyzed and unable to speak after a car accident. While working through Verity’s notes at her home, Lowen grows close to Verity’s husband, Jeremy (Hartnett), setting off a twisty and dangerous romance.
In an interview with HOLA!, the three actors opened up about making the movie and some of the fun they had when creating characters that go to some really dark places.
Anne Hathaway at “The End of Oak Street” world premiere
“I remember there’s this one [scene] where Verity’s doing something awful,” said Hathaway. “And Michael [Showalter] came to me and said, ‘Okay, we’re gonna do it one more time. Can you get into bed and be the happiest person who’s ever gotten into bed?’”
“For some reason I thought, what if I waltz my way into bed?”
Hathaway did her waltz, with her and Showalter bursting into laughter after they’d completed the shot. The two thought the moment was too crazy to be featured into the final cut of the final cur of the film. “And we were wrong! It’s in the movie,” she said.

What Johnson and Hathaway agree upon
As is the case with movies of this sort where there are changing dynamics depending on the narrator, the film invites many interpretations. The actors themselves have a lot of theories about their own characters and the possibilities of the story. There’s one thing that Johnson and Hathaway agree upon, though.
“I think Josh has crazy theories,” said Johnson. “But as me, I’m aware that Lowen is a crazy person.”
Hathaway laughs: “As Verity and myself, I’m aware that Lowen’s a crazy person.”
René “Residente” Pérez Joglar is moving behind the camera for one of the most ambitious projects of his career. The Puerto Rican rapper, filmmaker and actor is making his feature directorial debut with Porto Rico, an epic Caribbean western and historical drama inspired by real events in Puerto Rico during the turbulent final years of the 19th century. Production is now underway in the Dominican Republic, with Bad Bunny taking his first leading role in a feature film.
And the cast has become considerably bigger since the movie was first announced. Alongside Benito “Bad Bunny” Martínez Ocasio, the current lineup includes Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, Richard Gadd, Rhenzy Feliz, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Daniel Brühl, Rubén Blades, Alberto Guerra, Marcel Ruiz, Arian Cartaya, Óscar Jaenada, Carmen Machi and Luis Tosar.
Javier Bardem was part of the original cast announcement in February 2026, but the latest production report says the film subsequently “lost” Bardem while adding its new Spanish cast members.
Here is everything currently known about Porto Rico.
What Is Residente’s ‘Porto Rico’ About?
Porto Rico has been described by its producers as an “epic Caribbean western and historical drama” inspired by true events. Residente co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, the Oscar-winning co-writer of Birdman, as informed by Live Nation Newsroom.
The project has been developing for several years. When it was first reported in 2023, the story was described as being based on the life of Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román, better known as Águila Blanca, or White Eagle, according to Dominican newspaper, Diario Libre.
Set around the end of the 19th century, the story follows a period when Puerto Rico was undergoing a dramatic transformation from Spanish colonial rule to American control.
Maldonado was involved in the 1897 Intentona de Yauco, an unsuccessful uprising against Spanish rule. Historical accounts describe him joining Fidel Vélez and other revolutionaries who gathered outside Yauco and marched toward the town.
Earlier descriptions of Residente’s screenplay said Maldonado would lead a group of 17 former convicts as part of a story examining Puerto Rico’s struggle over colonialism, resistance and national identity.
Residente’s Porto Rico stars Bad Bunny, Edward Norton and Viggo Mortensen in an epic Caribbean western exploring Puerto Rico’s colonial history.
Deadline says the film will also address the events surrounding the United States’ 1898 takeover of Puerto Rico from Spain. That history also explains the movie’s title.
Why Is the Movie Called ‘Porto Rico’ Instead of ‘Puerto Rico’?
The missing “u” is intentional. After Puerto Rico came under U.S. control following the Spanish-American War, “Porto Rico” became the spelling used by the U.S. government. Federal law did not officially restore “Puerto Rico” as the island’s name until May 17, 1932.
Residente has connected that linguistic change directly to the themes of his film. Speaking about the project in September 2026, he described Porto Rico as Puerto Rico seen through the perspective of a new colonizing power and suggested that losing a letter from the island’s name symbolized losing power over how the country identified itself. “The loss of a single letter summarizes the loss of power over one’s own name: occupying a country can also mean deciding what it is called,” indicated Residente, as informed by EFE Noticias.
That makes the title much more than a historical spelling choice. It points directly toward the movie’s exploration of identity, political power and colonial control.
Bad Bunny Leads the ‘Porto Rico’ Cast
The biggest casting development is Bad Bunny’s leading role. Benito Martínez Ocasio has appeared in films including Bullet Train and Caught Stealing, but Porto Rico marks his first lead role in a feature film.
His exact character has not officially been disclosed, as character details for the newly announced actors are being kept under wraps. Edward Norton also has a major role behind the scenes as one of the film’s producers.
The Oscar-Winning Talent Behind the Camera
The filmmaking team extends well beyond Residente.
Academy Award-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, whose credits include Slumdog Millionaire, is serving as director of photography. David Crank is the production designer, while Anna Terrazas is handling costume design.
Residente and Erick Douât are producing through 1868 Studios. Edward Norton, Bill Migliore and Michael Bederman are producing through Class 5 Films. The film is backed by Live Nation Studios and Class 5 Films along with several strategic financing partners.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu received a Special Award Oscar at the November ceremony, a prize that is rarely given out.
Perhaps the most notable name among the executive producers is filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning director behind Birdman and The Revenant. Other executive producers currently listed include Michael Rapino, Ryan Kroft, Stella Bulochnikov, Scott Budnick, Kwanza Jones, José E. Feliciano, Mike and Sukey Novogratz, Noah Assad, Henry R. Muñoz III, Ric Elias, Sherrese Clarke, Niija Kuykendall, Regina Solórzano and Lakshmi Iyengar.
When Will ‘Porto Rico’ Be Released?
There is currently no announced release date for Porto Rico. Cameras are officially rolling in the Dominican Republic as of September 2026. No studio or distributor has announced a theatrical release date, streaming date or festival premiere. A trailer has also not been released.
‘Porto Rico’ Could Be a Major Moment for Caribbean Cinema
Porto Rico is notable not simply because Bad Bunny is starring in it or because Residente is directing. The production is positioning a Puerto Rican historical story as a large-scale Caribbean western with an international cast and an unusually decorated creative team. Rather than using the traditional American frontier as the setting for a western, the film applies elements of the genre to Puerto Rico’s own history of rebellion, colonial rule and political transition.
Residente has also emphasized the significance of making the film in Spanish, recalling that he had previously encountered the argument that studios were not interested in Caribbean stories.

Marileidy Paulino has added another record-setting victory to a remarkable 2026 season. The Dominican Olympic champion won the women’s 400 meters at ATHLOS London on September 18, clocking 48.73 seconds to establish a new meeting record at StoneX Stadium. Paulino launched a dramatic late charge to defeat Norway’s Henriette Jæger, who finished just five hundredths of a second behind in 48.78.
The victory earned Paulino first place at ATHLOS London and another signature crown moment at the women-focused track and field event.

But the 48.73 performance was significant for another reason. It marked Paulino’s 15th career 400-meter race under 49 seconds, tying the all-time record for the most sub-49 performances.

Paulino did not dominate the race from the opening gun. Jæger and Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce started aggressively, with Jæger reaching the 200-meter point in 23.69 seconds. Paulino was running sixth at that stage, approximately half a second behind the Norwegian leader.

Paulino continued gaining ground down the home straight before catching Jæger in the closing meters. She crossed the finish line in 48.73, with Jæger recording 48.78 and Pryce taking third in 49.39.
The margin between first and second was only 0.05 seconds.

Paulino’s ATHLOS performance was more than another win. Her 48.73 marked the 15th time in her career that she has completed 400 meters in under 49 seconds, equaling the all-time record. Eight of those sub-49 performances have come during the 2026 season alone.
That consistency helps put the scale of Paulino’s season into perspective.

The Dominican sprinter entered ATHLOS London undefeated in 2026 and extended that streak with her late-race victory. World Athletics described the result as another win in an unbeaten season, while Dominican reports noted that she completed her competitive year without a defeat.
It also continued Paulino’s success at ATHLOS. She won the inaugural ATHLOS NYC 400m in 2024 with a time of 49.59 seconds.
What Marileidy Paulino Won at ATHLOS London
ATHLOS London offered significantly increased prize money for the 2026 season. According to ATHLOS, first place in each event was worth $65,000, followed by $35,000 for second and $20,000 for third. The organization also continued its tradition of presenting winners with its Tiffany & Co.-designed crown.
The London competition was particularly significant for ATHLOS because it marked the event’s first international stop after launching in New York.

The women-only professional track and field competition featured seven disciplines: the 100-meter hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, mile and long jump.
Paulino was joined on the winners’ list by several major track stars. Sha’Carri Richardson won the women’s 100m in 10.80 seconds, Gabby Thomas took the 200m in 22.13 and Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson won her event in 1:56.40.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, she won the women’s 400m gold medal in an Olympic-record 48.17 seconds. Her career has continued to build since then, with her 2026 campaign showing an extraordinary level of consistency below the 49-second barrier.
