  • Christina Applegate Opens Up About Having an Abortion at 19 Amid an Abusive Relationship in Memoir

Christina Applegate Opens Up About Having an Abortion at 19 Amid an Abusive Relationship in Memoir

Christina Applegate is opening up about her life, career and battle with MS thus far in her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, published on Tuesday. One revelation from the memoir is that she had an abortion when she was 19 amid an abusive relationship

“In late April 1991, I fell pregnant,” she writes in her memoir per Entertainment Weekly. “I want to turn away from what happened, but it’s all recorded in my diary. There are moments in my life that are too painful to force into narrative or meaning, so I’ll let my voice from back then speak.”

Her memoir includes excerpts from old journals, one of which reportedly details the moment she learned she was 6 1/2 weeks pregnant at the time. “Two days before I found out, I got into a car accident on the way to the gynecologist. My car didn’t survive, but luckily, I did,” she wrote, as detailed by EW. “I knew I was pregnant. I couldn’t understand why even though I was watching my eating I still felt fat. I couldn’t understand why sex made me sick and I cried at the drop of a hat. Now I know. I always felt that if I ever got pregnant when I knew it was the wrong time, I wouldn’t have any problem having an abortion. ‘Oh, whatever, it isn’t even a baby yet.’ That’s bulls—, this creature is incredible. It makes me feel whole, safe…”

Of her boyfriend, Applegate writes of their emotionally abusive relationship: “My boyfriend said I was a disgusting, self-obsessed, eating-disordered fat pig today (not in so many words). That opened my eyes a great deal. … I don’t really understand my relationship anymore. It isn’t good. Sometimes I don’t think it’s worth it. … I feel I have lost myself somewhere, and I can’t find her for the life of me.”

“His family will hate me when they find out that I killed their family member because they don’t believe in it. But I can’t have this baby because I have work to do to entertain this fucking world. Besides, I can’t… now,” she writes of having an abortion.

In an entry dated June 13, 1991, Applegate reportedly writes, “it’s over.” Then she adds, “I feel pretty okay. Just kind of woozy. That gives me no time to realize what I have done. Which is most likely the best right now.”

She continues, “I was looking over what I’d written yesterday and just have to laugh. My emotions were extremely warped (I really don’t feel that way. Honestly, I think when you’re pregnant you tend to feel that way about the male figure in your life). My life is pretty wild. I could seriously write a book. I guess this kind of is.”

In addition to her early life and career, Applegate also writes about her MS diagnosis and the “excruciating agony” of the disease in her memoir. In 2021, Applegate publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, described by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as “an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.”

“I wish I could say that I am a miracle,” Applegate writes in her memoir per the NY Post. “Though most days it’s very hard to believe, and in any case, I don’t want to minimize what this disease does to a human body and soul.”

In her memoir, Applegate shares the struggles she has with simple movements: “When I wake up, I often can’t get my arm to move far enough to grab the cup of water by my bed or my phone from its charger. My stomach frequently slows to a halt, leaving me to regularly rush to the emergency room in agony.”

When looking back at the first signs of MS, which she learned while filming the final season of Netflix’s Dead to Me, Applegate recalled asking her chiropractor why her toes were twitching: “I’ll never forget the look he gave me,” she writes. After numbness crept into her extremities, she was tested. Results from a brain scan showed 30 lesions across its surface and the MS diagnosis.

“I remember trying to get down the stairs of my house at six o’clock in the morning, and I could make it to only the ninth stair,” she recalls while filming at the time.

She also reveals that she’s had to wear adult diapers due to “incontinence issues” because of the illness.

Her current treatment plan consists of her getting steroid infusions every six months to slow the disease. However, the drugs have side effects, including wiping out her B cells, leaving her vulnerable to infection, and weight gain.

The weight gain made receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame bittersweet, as Applegate writes, “Once people stared at my boobs; then they stared at my broken foot. But now I knew they were staring not only because I was disabled; they were staring because I was fat, forever an unacceptable fate for women in Hollywood.”

“I didn’t look in the mirror for a year,” Applegate, who has been open about her struggles with an eating disorder in the past, writes. She eventually dropped more than 50 pounds after being put on a liquid diet to manage her stomach issues.

Per the LA Times, Applegate also writes about her father leaving the family when she was a baby and her mother’s struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. She also reveals that at age 5, a female “caregiver” forced her to perform oral sex on her.

Overall, with her memoir, Applegate writes with bluntness and no sugarcoating. “This book is not cathartic for me — let’s just go there,” Applegate told The Los Angeles Times of her memoir. “I just needed to dump this shit out somewhere. It’s almost like you guys are now my therapists in the world.”

  • BBC COO Leigh Tavaziva Stepping Down

BBC COO Leigh Tavaziva Stepping Down

BBC COO Leigh Tavaziva will step down from her role in September, she has revealed in an internal letter sent to staff.

The move makes Tavaziva the third board-level exec to depart the British broadcaster in recent months, following the resignations of director-general Tim Davie and BBC News boss Deborah Turness late last year.

Tavaziva, who has been in the role for just over three years, said to colleagues: “After five brilliant years, I have taken the opportunity to reflect on my own role at the BBC and have decided that the time is right for me to leave to pursue new opportunities. I will be stepping down in September. It is a privilege and honour to work here and to have played my part, alongside you all, to ensure we deliver on the mission and purpose of an organisation that matters so much, and now more than ever.”

The news came with changes to the chief operating officer group, notably the creation of a new BBC Media Tech team. “This new division will unite all our Product and Technology teams in public service with tech and product colleagues from BBC Studios into a single Group team,” said Tavaziva. “Today, our technology capabilities are spread across multiple parts of the BBC, which can slow us down, create duplication, and make it harder to deliver seamless experiences to audiences. By forming a single division, we can focus our investment, make faster decisions, adopt shared tools and standards, and innovate quickly.”

She shared that Storm Fagan, currently chief product officer, has been appointed BBC chief technology and product officer to lead BBC Media Tech. “Storm is a pioneering leader who has delivered outstanding results in the Product Group and brings deep experience in delivering creative, audience-focused technology across the BBC and her previous organisations.”

Tavaziva added she will be “working closely” with interim director-general Rhodri Talfan Davies as he takes over in April, in order to “ensure we carefully manage this period of transition.”

“I do recognise the uncertainty many of you are facing with the changes we are announcing today,” she said. “We will continue to keep you updated as our plans and proposals develop and to ensure that you have an opportunity to feedback and input into the work.”

  • Matthew Macfadyen Shrinks Elizabeth Banks in ‘The Miniature Wife’ Trailer

Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen have quite a little problem on their hands in the newly released trailer for The Miniature Wife.

The Peacock series, which is based on the short story by Manuel Gonzales, “is a dramedy examining the power (im)balances between spouses after a technological accident induces the ultimate relationship crisis,” the official logline reads.

Banks’ Lindy Littlejohn says at the beginning of the footage (below), “My husband and I, we take turns supporting each other. So he supported me through my first book, and now it’s my turn.”

However, that support is put to the test when Macfadyen’s Les Littlejohn develops what he calls “the miracle of miniaturization,” which is supposed to help crops. But when it gets sprayed on Lindy by accident and she gets shrunk down to a few inches tall, Les must quickly find a way to restore her to her regular size.

“How long until you can fix me?” Banks character asks Les at the end of the trailer.

O-T Fagbenle, Zoe Lister-Jones, Sian Clifford, Sofia Rosinsky, Ronny Chieng, Aasif Mandvi, Rong Fu and Tricia Black round out the cast.

The Miniature Wife was created by Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner, who also serve as showrunners and executive producers. Banks, Macfadyen, Michael Aguilar and Suzanne Heathcote also executive produce alongside Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer for Media Res and Greg Mottola.

All 10 episodes of The Miniature Wife premiere April 9 on Peacock. Check out more first-look images below.

  • Jon Stewart Rages Over Iran War: “This Is Trump’s Whole Presidency”

Jon Stewart opened The Daily Show on Monday by launching into criticism of President Donald Trump‘s attack on Iran.

During his opening monologue (below), the comedy host mocked what the show dubbed “Mess O’Potamia: America’s Next Top Muddle.”

Letting the f-bombs fly, Stewart laid into Trump’s inconsistent communication and lack of congressional approval on the issue.

At one point, Stewart played clips that aired during the 2024 election of some on the right saying that Trump would be a “peace through strength” president who would keep the United States out of war. This was followed by clips collected since Friday of Trump supporters praising the strike.

“How quickly the right has gone from ‘peace through strength’ to ‘peace through war,’” Stewart said. “And we’re all just along for the ride in a war with no clear purpose, no end in sight, all at the whims of Donald Trump.”

    Stewart mocked…

The name “Operation Epic Fury”: “Epic Fury?! Did the Paul Brothers launch another energy drink?”

On Trump’s video announcing the attack from Mar-a-Lago while wearing a white baseball cap: “This is how we’re doing this? Mar-a-Lago basement? No lighting? You don’t even have one of those influencer halo lights? And this is what we’re wearing? Blazer, no tie, shirt unbuttoned? Looking more like the father of the bride settling up with the caterer? Not to nitpick, obviously, but baseball hat? We’re going with a baseball hat for a war of choice? Oh, I’m gonna go down and make my war announcement. ‘Don’t forget the HAT I got you that’s bigger than your head.’ … We should at least be thankful that the hat is forwards.”

On 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei being killed in a U.S. airstrike: “I doubt he’s anywhere near a location that obvious, given the advance surveillance he’s been under … He stayed in his house?! Old people are so fucking stubborn. America apparently had to start an entire war to kill an 86-year-old in ill health and not wait, I don’t know, three weeks to let saturated fat do its thing.” (Stewart also ripped into sympathetic studio audience noises for Khamenei — “Sorry, am I going too hard on Khamenei? A murderous dictator … who mowed down his own people?”)

On the House being set to vote on the war powers resolution on Thursday: “This coming Thursday?! The war already fucking happened! This is Trump’s whole presidency, he does whatever the fuck he wants and then a few days later, Congress is like: ‘Excuse me! Roll your window down. Excuse me, sir?! You’re not allowed to knock down the East Wing without a permit from the homeowner’s association. We’re going to let it slide this time.’ The U.S. Congress is like male nipples. Why do you exist? What do you do? Nothing! You do nothing!”

On Iran launching strikes at other countries in the Middle East: “So let me get this straight: America and Israel attack Iran. And Iran’s answer is to just attack everybody. You know, having been in a bar fight, I’m pretty sure the worst thing to do in a two-on-one beat down is to slap everybody else.”

After showing a clip of Trump rambling about random topics during a press briefing about the war: “I can’t believe our bombs are now smarter than our President.”

On Friday, Trump launched “Operation Epic Fury” targeting Iran to destroy its missile production, navy and nuclear capabilities following alleged “imminent threats.” The conflict has resulted in the death of many senior Iranian officials, significant infrastructure damage in Iran and four U.S. service member deaths. Trump has said the campaign could last weeks and hasn’t ruled out the use of U.S. troops on the ground.

  • Trump Says He’ll Attend White House Correspondents Dinner for First Time as President

Trump Says He’ll Attend White House Correspondents Dinner for First Time as President

Donald Trump says he will attend the upcoming White House Correspondents Dinner, marking the first time he’ll do so as president after skipping the dinner during his first term and last year.

“The White House Correspondents Association has asked me, very nicely, to be the Honoree at this year’s Dinner, a long and storied tradition since it began in 1924, under then President Calvin Coolidge,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “In honor of our Nation’s 250th Birthday, and the fact that these ‘Correspondents’ now admit that I am truly one of the Greatest Presidents in the History of our Country, the G.O.A.T., according to many, it will be my Honor to accept their invitation, and work to make it the GREATEST, HOTTEST, and MOST SPECTACULAR DINNER, OF ANY KIND, EVER!”

He added that he “boycotted” the event during his first term due to “extraordinarily bad” press coverage, “FAKE NEWS ALL, right from the beginning of my First Term.”

Trump’s decision comes after the WHCA selected mentalist Oz Pearlman as this year’s featured entertainer, bypassing the frequent practice of having a comedian as the entertainer, which often included an extended routine roasting the president.

Last year, the WHCA initially sleected Amber Ruffin as the featured entertainer for the event but had to cancel her appearance in the wake of White House criticism.

Though Trump skipped the WHCD while president, he attended multiple times before he became president, most famously in 2011 when both then-President Barack Obama and featured entertainer Seth Meyers poked fun at him while he looked unamused. An experience that some have said may have inspired Trump’s decision to first run for president in 2015.

The 2026 White House Correspondents Dinner is set for April 25 in Washington.

  • Artists Equity Inks Streaming Pact With Netflix

Artists Equity Inks Streaming Pact With Netflix

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity has found a streaming home with Netflix, signing a multi-year streaming first-look deal, production and distribution agreement with the company.

Artists Equity, which is also run by RedBird Capital’s Gerry Cardinale, recently partnered with Netflix on the crime thriller The Rip, starring both Affleck and Damon, which spent three weeks as the No. 1 movie on Netflix’s Top 10 chart, according to the streamer. Netflix is also set to release Affleck’s next directorial feature, Animals, starring Affleck, Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson, which is due out later this year.

The news of the Netflix partnership comes after Artists Equity entered into a similar pact with Sony but for theatrical releases. Under that three-year deal, Sony will distribute Artists Equity’s theatrical films globally and will additionally finance the films and handle all ancillaries, with Artists Equity having the option to co-finance certain projects. (Sony, notably, does not have a sister streaming service.)

In terms of which projects will end up under the Netflix streaming deal or the Sony theatrical pact, that decision will be made on a project-by-project basis based on Artists Equity’s discussion with its studio partners.

“This is an incredible milestone for Artists Equity and one that validates the vision we’ve been working towards since 2022. From the jump, we’ve seen this growing need for an independent supplier comfortable across the entire creative process, from development to final cut. Netflix is a great match for our work. [Netflix film chairman] Dan [Lin] and his team have a unique connection with the modern viewer and the ability to unite audiences over a shared cultural moment,” said Affleck and Damon in a joint statement.

Added Lin, “We’re expanding our partnership with Artists Equity because they share our mission — to make bold, original films. Ben and Matt don’t wait for opportunities, they create them: from making and starring in ambitious, original films, to building an innovative studio model.”

  • Hope Davis Boards NBC’s ‘Protection’ Drama

NBC’s drama pilot Protection has cast another of its lead roles.

Hope Davis (The Phoenician Scheme, Your Honor) will star opposite Peter Krause in the show, about a family of law enforcement officers who are targeted by a killer. Like Krause, Davis starred in an 2010s NBC show, in her case the short-lived drama Allegiance.

Protection, from creator Josh Safran (Gossip Girl, Quantico), kicks off “when a U.S. Marshal falls in the line of duty,” the show’s logline reads. “A seemingly cut-and-dry case turns into a deadly conspiracy as a family of law enforcement agents become the target of a mysterious assassin. Bridging personal differences and crossing professional boundaries, the Thornhill family must use the expertise from a lifetime of protecting civilians and politicians to protect one another and bring the killer to justice … even if it means betraying their sworn code.”

Davis will play Joan, a federally appointed U.S. marshal who commands respect at work.

Davis is a three-time Emmy nominee, most recently for her recurring role on HBO’s Succession. Her recent credits also include writer-director Kelly Reichardt’s feature The Mastermind, Apple TV’s miniseries Before, HBO’s Perry Mason and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. She’s currently appearing on stage in Wallace Shawn’s play What We Did Before Our Moth Days at the Greenwich House Theater. Davis is repped by UTA and Kipperman Management.

Safran is executive producing Protection with Jenna Bush Hager and Ben Spector. The show comes from Universal Television.

  • How That Jim Carrey Clone Conspiracy Theory Spiraled Out of Control

How That Jim Carrey Clone Conspiracy Theory Spiraled Out of Control

Suddenly, Jim Carrey became the new Avril Lavigne.

The actor’s appearance at the César Awards in Paris last week spawned a surge of conspiracy theories that the Dumb and Dumber actor had been replaced by a clone.

The reason for the theories seemed to be the 64-year-old actor’s face looking possibly a bit inflamed in some of the footage online.

“Sorry but there’s a zero percent chance this is actually Jim Carrey,” declared one account with 47,000 followers on X. “I’m not saying it’s a clone or some dumb illuminati shit, but for some reason he’s clearly using a body double to stand in for him.”

While other fringe accounts were very much saying Carrey had been replaced by a clone (Example: “Jim Carrey was cloned and killed by satanists. They can create a clone in 5 months.”)

Adding fuel to the fire was a resurfaced, decades-old clip of Carrey on Late Night with David Letterman where the actor said he uses decoys to fool paparazzi. “I’ve done this a few times now and that is to use a decoy,” the actor said at the time, seemingly serious. “Using a decoy — it sounds so ridiculous but it works like a charm … a Jim Carrey double. I send him off in one direction, he sucks all the press in that direction, and I just have my day.”

Of course, using a decoy to get the press off your back is one thing. Sending somebody else in your place to accept an honorary award at the French equivalent of the Oscars with your family in attendance would be quite another.

Others speculated the actor had simply had recent plastic surgery of some kind. Or that he had deliberately altered his looks as some kind of performance art piece. Needless to say, all variations of the rumor had an undercurrent of mean-spiritedness given the whole “you no longer look like you” nature of them.

Then, just when rumors began to really froth, drag artist Alexis Stone posted on Instagram on Sunday suggesting she used prosthetics to make herself look like Carrey and impersonated him at the awards show. She posted a photo of Carrey at the awards with the caption: “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris.”

Confirmation? So it wasn’t Carrey after all? At this point, even Megan Fox was thrown, with the actress commenting on the post: “I can’t handle any more stress right now i need to know if this is real.” While Katy Perry commented with a bullseye emoji.

Monday morning, however, César Awards organizers and Carrey’s reps seemingly had quite enough. The general delegate of the César Awards, Gregory Caulier, said in a statement first obtained by Variety, “Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer” and praised the actor’s preparation for his speech, which he gave entirely in French. Caulier called the rumors a “non-issue,” saying “I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”

A couple of hours later, Carrey’s personal rep — and you can almost hear a weary sigh accompanying this statement — first confirmed to TMZ, “Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award.”

So there you have it. Yes, that was Jim Carrey and not a clone, body double, or impersonator.

The shame of this is that Carrey’s stirring speech received high praise from those in attendance (which included girlfriend Mina, daughter Jane and grandson Jackson). Carrey is not a French speaker and apparently worked long and hard on his delivery. “As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire,” he said in French. “How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me.”

The clone/double rumors were frequently fueled on X, which has come under fire for misinformation of a far more serious nature since President Trump ordered an attack on Iran late Friday. A Wired story wrote that X was “drowning in disinfo” since the attack began.
