  • At NCAA’s March Madness, Music Is a Big Business This Year, Too

At NCAA’s March Madness, Music Is a Big Business This Year, Too

The Chainsmokers are headlining the first-ever “Bridge Show” between the two upcoming Final Four games for the NCAA Men’s National Basketball Tournament, a move that reflects a growing presence of music programming at the world’s biggest sporting events.

The Bridge Show will air on TBS and was first revealed during the Elite Eight broadcasts over the weekend, with Turner hoping the performance can appease more casual fans and add some more flair to the sort of programming limbo between the two semifinal matchups set to take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday.

The Chainsmokers’ show isn’t the only music programming for the tournament this year. There’s also the annual March Madness Festival that Turner Sports produces, which goes back over a decade. This year’s lineup though, is among the most robust it’s organized to date, with Post Malone, Twenty One Pilots and Zac Brown Band all listed as headliners, while Megan Moroney, Ravyn Lenae, Russell Dickerson and Dominic Fike are all on the bill as well.

CAA is the agency for the Chainsmokers as well as all three headlining festival acts at the festival this year. The agency didn’t give a specific figure but said the coming weekend now represents “eight figures” in deals, with Dave Aussenberg, a music sponsorship agent at CAA, calling it “a very lucrative weekend for the music department.”

“It’s an event our clients are asking us for now,” Aussenberg says of its musical roster with March Madness. “When the festival was first conceptualized, it was a nice-to-have complement to a weekend of basketball, but it’s growing so much. March Madness is growing leaps and bounds. It’s positioned before the NFL starts, before NBA playoffs, and before baseball is in full swing. There’s a wide audience of fans. People want entertainment, they want to make a weekend out of an event like this. “There’s a huge captive audience, you’ve got four-night hotel minimums, what are you supposed to do?”

The three-day festival itself is free and is subsidized by corporate sponsorships. CAA works closely with TNT Sports, as well as with the Solomon Group for March Madness’s music programming. In a statement, TNT Sports U.S. EVP and Chief Content Officer Craig Barry called their combined efforts “a true convergence of sport, music, and culture.”

“By bringing artists into the fabric of the tournament — not just as performers, but as creative partners — we’re creating a multi-platform experience that resonates far beyond the games themselves,” Barry said.

As the Solomon Group added: “The festival is an event that Final Four and music fans look forward to every year. Working creatively with CAA to line up artists and with TNT Sports to integrate on broadcasts during Final Four weekend, TNT Sports and Solomon Group produce a concert experience that matches the energy of the games, turning the whole weekend into an experience you can’t find anywhere else.”

Music is becoming a more prominent buy-in for additional programming for major sporting events across the country. The Super Bowl Halftime Show has only grown larger in its importance and footprint in recent years. Bad Bunny drew 128.2 million viewers for his show back in February, more than the game itself, and Kendrick Lamar put up 133.5 million the year before.

Now FIFA has been notably growing its musical presence as well. The first-ever World Cup Halftime Show will take place when the world’s most-watched sports tournament comes to the U.S. later this Summer, and Coldplay is helping select the talent for the halftime gig. Coldplay, along with Doja Cat, J Balvin and Tems, played FIFA’s Club World Cup Halftime Show as well last year.

Even outside of these larger televised events, Live Nation put a stake in the ground to capitalize on an influx of baseball fans that head to Arizona for spring training, putting on the Innings Festival in Tempe, Arizona since 2018. For musicians, playing these sporting events gets them in front of broader audiences that may come outside of their core fanbase. And in March Madness’s case, as the more regional music festival scene has shrunk some since COVID while the larger festivals have become more dominant, it provides more multi-day music for fans outside of those markets too.

“These events are drawing so many fans in different cities where they’re hosted,” Aussenberg says.  “Including music is good for the ratings and good for the cities. And it’s a nice draw for artists, everyone’s there from the diehards to more casual fans.”

  • ‘Pretty in Pink’: THR’s 1986 Review

‘Pretty in Pink’: THR’s 1986 Review

On Feb. 28, 1986, Paramount unveiled John Hughes’ high school feature Pretty in Pink in theaters, where it would go on to gross $40 million in its run and become a breakout for Breakfast Club star Molly Ringwald. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:

What do you say about a girl whose date reneges in his invitation to the prom? If it’s Molly Ringwald and you’re Paramount, you’d say you’ve probably got a box-office hit. Color Pretty in Pink green for the studio.

Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy star in this latest John Hughes’ teenage melodrama about a girl from the wrong side of the tracks and a boy from the country club who fall for each other. It’s not an easy boundary to cross in their stratified high school and screenwriter Hughes has very astutely dramatized the pressures and crosscurrents of high school life.

As an industrious and self-reliant senior, Ringwald essentially baby-sits her chronically myopic father (Harry Dean Stanton), sews her own clothes and contends with the condescension of her patrician peers. She’s a model of decorum and restraint but largely unnoticed by the opposite sex. Only a geeky, witty male pal (Jon Cryer) sees her worth, until one day, quite remarkably, rich-kid McCarthy takes an interest. This sparks all kinds of adverse reaction, mainly from McCarthy’s snotty pals and girlfriends, a tribe so fiercely materialistic and shallow as to make current Less Than Zero-types seem well rounded by comparison.

While Hughes has tapped into the peer dilemmas of high school with sensivity and keen insight, his stacked-deck script tends to dilute the film’s obvious emotional appeal. As the poor girl, Ringwald seems a candidate for canonization. Disciplined, considerate, well groomed and studious, she’s the model young lady. Quite unbelievably she’s constantly attacked by sniping future-sorority girl types — in real life, one suspects they wouldn’t even notice the unobtrusive, demure Ringwald.

Nevertheless, the film shines with atmospheric nuances and Ringwald’s away-from-school life (working in a record store, tending her dad) taps into common teen-age problems. Her easy, quirky friendship with the hypertensive Cryer rings true. As the smart and smitten outsider, he is convincingly vulnerable and likable.

Characters who ring less true include Stanton’s role as the bathrobe-clad father. He’s a deadbeat, pining away for his long-departed wife but as written here the role is reminiscent of an old-time, hangdog-lovable Disney villain. Another oddity is Ringwald’s co-worker in the record store (Annie Potts), a ’60s leftover who looks 15, alternates between punk and beehive hairdos and listens to the Association, of all groups. It’s a nice and odd idea, but such lines as “I loved The Big Chill” make this pseudo-’60s section a distraction.

Ringwald and McCarthy are outstanding in their roles, a credit to writer Hughes and first-time director Harold Deutch. Ringwald’s prim, disciplined portrayal adds just the right touch of endearing spunkiness, while McCarthy, fighting with his social demons, is a likable rich kid with character substance.

As two snotty rich girls, Kate Vernon and Emily Longstreth are positively princess, convincing in their cool bitchiness.

Certain to be a touchstone for teen-agers grappling with identity and prom problems this spring, Pretty in Pink is discolored by a pat and incredible ending. Hughes has drummed up a blonde exmachina to save the day. It rings false Molly’s last choice is a surprise and will be, for many, a disappointment. Technical credits, all of them, get top grades. — Duane Byrge, originally published on Feb. 7, 1986.

  • Instagram Will “Substantially Reduce” Use of PG-13 Rating in Deal With Motion Picture Association

Instagram will “substantially reduce” its reference to the Motion Picture Association‘s PG-13 rating thanks to a deal between Meta and the Hollywood trade organization. The social media platform will also add a disclaimer, marking a clear distinction between the MPA’s PG-13 rating, and its own variation.

Terms of the agreement will go into effect beginning April 15.

Late last year Meta’s Instagram announced teen accounts, including a disclosure that they would be “guided by” the PG-13 rating. The MPA was furious with the move, as it protects its film ratings system closely, and sent a cease and desist letter to Meta, calling the use of PG-13 “false and highly misleading.”

“Today’s agreement clearly distinguishes the MPA’s film ratings from Instagram’s Teen Account content moderation tools,” said Charles Rivkin, Chairman and CEO of the MPA, in a statement. “While we welcome efforts to protect kids from content that may not be appropriate for them, this agreement helps ensure that parents do not conflate the two systems – which operate in very different contexts. The MPA is proud of the trust we have built with parents for nearly sixty years with our film rating system, and we will continue to do everything we can to protect that trust.”

“We’re pleased to have reached an agreement with the MPA,” added a Meta spokesperson. “By taking inspiration from a framework families know, our goal was to help parents better understand our teen content policies. We rigorously reviewed those policies against 13+ movie ratings criteria and parent feedback, updated them, and applied them to Teen Accounts by default. While that’s not changing, we’ve taken the MPA’s feedback on how we talk about that work. We’ll keep working to support parents and provide age-appropriate experiences for teens.”

The MPA had moved swiftly after Instagram announced the rating, noting its own 60-year history of providing ratings for films (the ratings are also trademarked by the group). After the legal letter was sent, Meta changed its reference from PG-13 to “inspired by movie ratings for ages 13+” and added a disclaimer. The resolution announced Tuesday formalizes that.

“There are lots of differences between social media and movies,” the new disclaimer will read. “We didn’t work with the MPA when updating our content settings, and they’re not rating any content on Instagram, and they’re not endorsing or approving our content settings in any way. Rather, we drew inspiration from the MPA’s public guidelines, which are already familiar to parents. Our content moderation systems are not the same as a movie ratings board, so the experience may not be exactly the same.”

  • Amazon’s Live-Action ‘Masters of the Universe’ Trailer Reveals Jared Leto as Skeletor

    Is He-Man Mattel’s next Barbie?

Perhaps not, but Masters of the Universe could still be a franchise starter for the toy company’s latest live-action cinematic effort.

Below is the first trailer for the Amazon MGM and Mattel Studios film, which brings the iconic ’80s toy line and animated series to life.

The official description: “After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.”

Masters of the Universe is from director Travis Knight and also stars Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, and features Kristen Wiig as the voice of Roboto.

The project had a long road to the big screen, with development reportedly going back to 2007 and John Woo attached to direct. The title has undergone several rewrites over the years, with various writers trying to crack the script. Finally, the film was greenlit with a story by Aaron and Adam Nee, Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, and a screenplay by Chris Butler, Aaron and Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham.

Masters of the Universe releases in theaters June 5.

Other nominees this year include Jason and Travis Kelce, Kylie Kelce, Heated Rivalry, OpenAI, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Sinners, Waymo, Patreon, Amy Poehler, Netflix, PBS, MrBeast, Google Gemini, KATSEYE, Steven Bartlett, Justin Bieber, ACLU, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Dwayne Johnson, Pedro Pascal, Kendrick Lamar & SZA, LeBron James, Rosalía, Keith Lee, Reese Witherspoon, Sydney Sweeney, LISA, Carmelo Anthony, Trixie Mattel, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert.

  • ‘The Black Mirror Experience,’ “Immersive” Blend of “Physical Space and VR,” to Premiere in Montreal

‘The Black Mirror Experience,’ “Immersive” Blend of “Physical Space and VR,” to Premiere in Montreal

Watch out, Montreal! The Black Mirror Experience is coming! Launching in May at location-based virtual reality (VR) Infinity Experiences in the Canadian city, the 60-minute “immersive experience blending physical space and VR” is based on hit drama series Black Mirror and produced by Banijay Live Studio, part of Banijay Live, in partnership with VR studio Univrse.

Additional locations will be unveiled soon. The Black Mirror Experience accommodates groups of up to six participants ages 12-plus.

“The all-new experience is inspired by the award-winning dark, satirical TV anthology, which explores humanity’s uneasy relationship with technology,” explained Banijay Live, part of Banijay, which recently struck a mega-merger deal with All3Media. “Blending sci-fi and social commentary, Black Mirror, a Banijay Entertainment format, which resides on Netflix, has earned 29 major awards (including nine Emmys and four BAFTAs) across seven seasons, captivating over 3.3 million global subscribers and 86 million social views.”

Explained the company about the Black Mirror immersive experience: “With each of Black Mirror’s episodes holding a mirror up to our relationship with technology, showing how our digital choices shape society, this first-of-its-kind experience will force visitors to make these same choices. Groups are invited to the exclusive opening of Phaethon’s showroom – a tech giant about to unveil its most ambitious creation yet: LifeAgent, a robot designed to simplify your life, understand your desires, and help you become your best self. At first, everything feels seamless. Reassuring. Almost perfect. Until it doesn’t…”

Banijay Live CEO François De Brugada

    Courtesy of Banijay

The Black Mirror Experience is the first offering from Banijay Live Studio, a Banijay unit tasked with turning Banijay Entertainment’s intellectual property (IP) into location-based entertainment experiences. Said François de Brugada, CEO of Banijay Live: “We’re expanding Banijay Entertainment’s relationship with the screen into real-world experiences. Banijay Live Studio is making its public debut with The Black Mirror Experience, a ‘never-before-seen’ location-based VR experience that encapsulates all the cultural relevance of Black Mirror and brings fans into the story.”

Tristan Desplechin, producer at Banijay Live Studio, said that his team’s focus is on turning IPs into experiences “that you can only live in-person,” adding: “Black Mirror is the perfect starting point – a universe that is as thought-provoking as it is cinematic. Working with Univrse, we have built something that doesn’t just extend the franchise – it redefines what location-based entertainment can be.”

David Bardos, director and founder at Univrse, said the collaboration required technology “that has never been seen before in the location-based entertainment sector,” touting the creation of “a new standard for what this industry can achieve – technically, narratively, and experientially.”

Created by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror‘s seventh season debuted on Netflix in April 2025, produced by Broke & Bones, with Brooker, Jessica Rhoades and Annabel Jones as executive producers. The show brand is represented by Banijay Rights.

  • ‘Sound of Falling,’ Berlin Winner ‘Yellow Letters’ Lead German Film Awards Nominations

‘Sound of Falling,’ Berlin Winner ‘Yellow Letters’ Lead German Film Awards Nominations

Family drama Sound of Falling, directed by Mascha Schilinski, and İlker Çatak‘s Berlin Film Festival winner Yellow Letters are leading the nominations for the 2026 German Film Awards, also known as the Lolas, Germany’s equivalent of the Oscars.

Sound of Falling received 11 noms, with Yellow Letters receiving nine. In the best director category, they will compete with Simon Verhoeven’s comedy Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke, which received a total of seven noms.

In the best feature film category, those three movies go up against Fatih Akin and Herman Weigel’s Amrum, which got a total of six noms, Anna-Malike Eigl, Thomas Wöbke and Philipp Trauer’s 22 Lengths, which received five, and Felix von Boehm’s The Disappearance of Josef Mengele, which received seven noms.

THR‘s review called Sound of Falling, which depicts four generations of young women inhabiting the same farmhouse in northeast Germany, “a haunting meditation on womanhood and rural strife that heralds the arrival of a bold new talent.”

Competing at Cannes, the second feature from Mascha Schilinski (‘Dark Blue Girl’) .

About Yellow Letters, THR‘s review said: “For his follow-up to the tense and claustrophobic German middle school drama, The Teachers’ Lounge, director Ilker Çatak has attempted something both more ambitious and more mystifying: a tale of authoritarian oppression, artistic strife and family conflict that’s set in contemporary Turkey but was shot entirely in Germany, with no attempts to hide the fact that nothing is taking place where it should.”

Already unveiled on Tuesday as the winner of the biggest box office hit of the year was slapstick comedy Western parody Manitou’s Canoe, directed by and starring Michael “Bully” Herbig.

The German Film Academy unveiled the nominees for the 76th edition of the German Film Awards midday Tuesday. The awards ceremony will take place in Berlin on May 29, hosted by Christian Friedel (The Zone of Interest, The White Lotus, Babylon Berlin) for the second year in a row.

Last year, Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, the real-life thriller based on the terrorist attacks at the 1972 Munich Olympics that stars Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro and Leonie Benesch, swept the German honors.
