  • Playdate games to check out before the Catalog’s 3-year anniversary sale ends

If your Playdate wishlist is anything like mine (endless), here’s a good excuse to actually go ahead and free some of those games from limbo: Panic is running a sale across the Playdate Catalog to celebrate its three-year anniversary. Sure, the majority of Playdate games are pretty cheap as is, but they can still add up when you’re on a wild purchasing spree. Ask me how I know! The sale started on March 5 and goes until March 19 at 1PM ET (10AM PT), so take advantage of the discounts while you can.

There are 423 games available in the Catalog now, according to Panic, so if you’re having trouble deciding on which you should go for, I’ve got you covered with a few recommendations right here.

    Season Two

Image for the mini product module

If $39 felt like too much to drop on Season Two when it came out last summer, now’s the time to get it. Playdate’s second season had only half the number of games as its first, but it still felt like a much stronger collection. Each of its 12 games is really solid, and there’s plenty of variety in terms of genre and style, from puzzles and hours-long adventures to fast-paced action games that are great for bursts of intense play. And, it comes with Blippo+ — an oddball cable TV simulator that’s unlike anything out there right now.

All of these games are worth playing, but there were definitely some standouts from the bunch: The Whiteout, a post-apocalyptic adventure that’ll surely hit even harder now considering the winter we’ve had; the puzzle platformer Taria & Como; the arcade action game Fulcrum Defender; the climbing adventure, Tiny Turnip. I also really enjoyed Dig! Dig! Dino! for something on the chiller side.

    Outside Parties

Image for the mini product module

I have not been able to shut up about this game since it came out. It’s unique, it’s creepy, it’s completely engrossing and it really pushes the limits of what the Playdate can do. Outside Parties is a horror scavenger hunt, presenting you with one massive picture to scrutinize and find hidden scenes within, using the crank to adjust the brightness constantly so you can find anything that may be buried in shadow. As you find these targets, more and more of the game’s story comes to light through eerie audio clips. It is such a cool experience and the atmosphere of it all is incredible. You’ll get many hours of playtime out of this one too, with over 150 targets to find and lots of lore to uncover.

    Crankstone

Image for the mini product module

A full-blown western for the Playdate! Crankstone is a gallery shooter with minigames mixed throughout, and between the aesthetic, the music and the activities, it’s a lot of fun. You can choose the story mode to get right into the shooting and defending the town from outlaws, or head to the saloon to pick from the handful of mini games individually, including some fast-paced “spot the correct card” deck shuffling games and a few mimicry games involving the crank. It’s like a wild west theme park crammed into the Playdate, which is to say, it’s wonderful.

    Echo: The Oracle’s Scroll

Image for the mini product module

This is one of my all-time favorite Playdate games. Echo: The Oracle’s Scroll is a metroidvania without the usual combat, focusing entirely on exploration and puzzle-solving in a vast network of subterranean kingdoms. In this game, the Blight has forced civilization underground, and you play as a child who has been sent on a mission to deliver a scroll from the bottom-most territory, where the humans live, up to The Archives.

There are all sorts of treacherous environments underground, including magma lakes and areas filled with hostile vegetation, making for what is at times a challenging platformer that requires lots of creativity to make your way through. The tone is a bit somber, but quirky characters — like a frog prince with a bouncy belly — keep things from getting too dark.

    Carte Blanche

Image for the mini product module

This one’s for lovers of classic card games. There are six games in this virtual card game parlor (which is run by a bird named Blanche): Cribbage, Gin Rummy, Spades, Cassino and Spite & Malice. It’s great for if you already know what you’re doing, but I found Carte Blanche to be a really good introduction to these games for absolute beginners too, thanks to the easy-to-follow tutorials. When you win games, you’ll be rewarded with coins that you can spend at Blanche’s slot machine, which is stocked with little trinkets she’s collected.

    Castle Kellmore

Image for the mini product module

Castle Kellmore absolutely rules. This first-person action game puts you in a series of mazes where you have to fight off floating-head-style monsters as you hunt around for keys and try to find the doors and portals to your escape. There are sixteen levels, and upon finishing each one you’ll get a little summary of how long it took you to complete that area and what percentage of the level’s enemies you killed. I also really get a kick out of the sounds in this game. The enemies slurp and squelch, and your character will let out a hilariously passionless, “Ah” or “Ooeuugh” after picking up a health boost or getting injured. Great for fans of dungeons!

    Piña Rollada

Image for the mini product module

If you’ve ever played any of the Super Monkey Ball games, the gist of this one should be pretty familiar: roll the ball through the course and collect all of the fruits before reaching the exit. Don’t fall off the edge, and do it all in as little time as possible. Piña Rollada makes use of the Playdate’s accelerometer, which means you control the ball’s movement by tilting the console (there is also the option to use the D-pad instead). The courses start getting tricky pretty much right away, with thin paths that don’t have any guardrails, obstacles to avoid and moving platforms. And, just going near the exit will result in the ball getting sucked in, so you have to keep that in mind as you collect any surrounding fruits if you don’t want the level to end prematurely.

This is another one of those games that is both frustrating (in the fun way) and totally addicting. Expect to yell a lot.

    Other games to try

These are just the games I’ve been enjoying lately, but there are tons of other Playdate games worth checking out during the sale, like these cheese games and Spilled Mushrooms. And if you need even more recommendations, take a look through our list of the best Playdate games, where you’ll find gems like Summit and Bwirds. There are quite a few I’m planning to finally spring from my wishlist too, including The Shape That Waits.

Update, March 15 2026, 7:15 PM ET: This story has been updated to include additional game recommendations.

  • Amy Madigan’s Win Kicks off an Inspirational Oscars

Amy Madigan’s Win Kicks off an Inspirational Oscars

The 2026 Oscars began on a touching, career-capping note as Amy Madigan took her first Oscar nearly 45 years since she began acting.

Madigan won the supporting actress statuette for her role as the creepily supernatural Aunt Gladys in breakout horror hit Weapons, winning an Oscar in her second try. Her first nomination came 40 years ago for the romantic drama Twice In a Lifetime.

“What’s different is I got this little gold guy,” Madigan said in her acceptance speech, comparing this Oscar campaign to the last one.

Beginning with a cackle befitting her Weapons character, she said she had tried to think of a speech while shaving her legs in the shower Saturday night, and then proceeded to give emotional thank yous to various people who worked on her film and on her career. “As you can tell I’m a little flummoxed,” she said, while alluding to all the other Warner Bros. contenders that had welcome her on the awards trail. She also thanked longtime husband Ed Harris and “of course all the dogs.”

Shortly after Madigan’s win, KPop Demon Hunters took the animated feature Oscar, no doubt giving heart to the millions of fans of the Netflix phenom who may not otherwise be avidly following best-picture odds.

An emotional director co-director Maggie Kang took the stage and said, “For those of you who look like me, I’m so sorry that it took this long to see us in a movie like this,” the Korean-Canadian filmmaker then vowing it would not be long until the next one.

A defiant note happened when animated presenter Will Arnett said “Tonight we’re celebrating people, not AI.” Animation, he added, “is more than a prompt; it’s an art form and it needs to be protected.”

The show began with host Conan O’Brien trying to push a more hopeful message despite war-torn and dislocating times.

After noting said toughness, O’Brien said that “It’s at moments like these that the Oscars are particularly resonant, citing the dozens of countries watching and represented and the pursuit of the “rarest of qualities today: optimism. So please let us celebrate not because we think all is well but because we know and hope for better.”

  • Amy Madigan Receives Standing Ovation for ‘Weapons’ Win, Thanks Ed Harris and “All the Dogs”

Amy Madigan Receives Standing Ovation for ‘Weapons’ Win, Thanks Ed Harris and “All the Dogs”

Amy Madigan officially became the 2026 Oscar’s secret weapon of Zach Cregger’s Weapons by picking up the best supporting actress trophy for her work in the film.

Madigan, 75, set a new record with the win because it made her the actress with the longest gap (40 years and one month) between a first nomination and a first victory. She received her first nod for 1985’s Twice in a Lifetime, a Bud Yorkin-directed film that also starred Gene Hackman, Ann-Margret and Ellen Burstyn. The previous record holder amongst actresses was Geraldine Page who won for The Trip To Bountiful at the 1986 Oscars. It came 32 years and one month after her first nomination for Hondo at the 1954 Oscars.

Last year’s best supporting actress winner Zoe Saldaña had the honor of presenting the trophy, the first Oscar doled out during the show, and when she read Madigan’s name, the starry crowd responded with a standing ovation. Madigan noted how they were advised not to rattle off a list of names “because nobody knows who the hell those people are,” but she leaned in because it’s people “that mean something to you that you couldn’t be here without them.”

On that note, she thanked Cregger for “writing me a dream part” and letting her “grab it by the throat and we had a ball.” She also shouted out Warner Bros. chiefs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca as well as Newline. Madigan then turned her attention to her fellow nominees in the category, Sentimental Value’s Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Sinners Wunmi Mosaku and One Battle After Another’s Teyana Taylor.

“When I was doing all the Weapons stuff, I was kind of traveling on my own and people from One Battle and people from Sinners and all the films, they just kind of gave me a hug and said, ‘Yeah, come on in and let us know you. You can know us.’”

Madigan closed her heartfelt speech by thanking her daughter, Lily, and her daughter’s husband, Sean, “and, of course, all the dogs.” Then came the “most important” by a leap, her husband, Oscar nominated actor Ed Harris. “Ed has been with me forever, and that’s a long ass time. And none of this would mean anything if he wasn’t by my side.”

In Cregger’s Weapons, Madigan stars as Aunt Gladys. The plot traces the fallout of what happens when 17 third-grade children disappear from their homes in the middle of the night at the exact same time. The film’s final act reveals that the aunt of one of the school children is a witch and cast a spell to help keep herself alive amid an illness. Madigan’s Gladys became something of an online and cultural sensation thanks to her smeared clown-like makeup, an unmistakable wig and menacing presence. It brought renewed interest to her career, too.

“I was telling everybody, ‘Hey, I’m going to play this really wild lady,’ ” she told The Hollywood Reporter’s David Canfield late last year. “Then it came out, and it turned into something else. It feels very antithetical to the work that I do and how I live my life.”

Speaking of that work, it’s been reported that Cregger had a prequel in mind for Weapons, centered on Aunt Gladys and how she got to be the mysterious villain of his story. “Zach has a map of what he would like to do. But as we know about this business — until it’s real, it’s not real,” Madigan said last year. “It would be such a blast, and it would be really great if we could revisit her in some way. I’m excited about that possibility.”

  • Trump Meme Coin Price, Trading Volume Skyrocket as Holders Vie for Exclusive Event Access

Trump Meme Coin Price, Trading Volume Skyrocket as Holders Vie for Exclusive Event Access

    In brief

    • President Donald Trump’s official Solana-based meme coin has surged by 35% in the last 24 hours.
    • At least one wallet is up more than $2 million during that time, with trading volume skyrocketing.
    • The top 297 registered holders will gain access to the event in late April.

President Trump’s official Solana-based meme coin—TRUMP—has surged in price by about 35% in the last 24 hours following an announcement that top holders will gain access to a new exclusive event featuring the president.

The token is now changing hands around $3.75, a 40% jump off its recent low mark of $2.73 registered by CoinGecko on Thursday.

News of the exclusive event, slated to be held at the president’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, has also helped spur significant volume increases for the token over the last 24 hours.

Volumes registered by CoinGecko point to a more than 4x increase from Wednesday to Thursday with trading numbers breaching $292 million on the day of the announcement, compared to just $72 million worth of trades the day before.

On a rolling basis over the last 24 hours, however, CoinGecko recently showed $1.78 billion worth of trading volume. And on its significant price spike, some traders have seen major gains in the last 24 hours.

A Solana address with no significant on-chain activity in the last five months was flagged by on-chain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence after it was sent 2.2 million TRUMP tokens, valued around over $8 million at present time.

It’s not immediately clear if the tokens were recently purchased by the user, whose funds were transferred from a wallet labeled as “Binance Hot Wallet.” Regardless, the tokens have gained about $2 million in value during the last day of trading.

The Solana address, ending in “DLN2A,” also had significant transaction volumes with the official meme coin of First Lady Melania Trump (MELANIA), according to data from Solana block explorer Solscan.

The meme coin for the president’s wife has jumped more than 12% in the last 24 hours, but has fared even worse than TRUMP over the long run. It recently changed hands around $0.125, down 99% from its all-time high of $13.05.

Trump’s next meme coin event will welcome the top 297 registered holders of his TRUMP meme coin to a special luncheon, where the president will be a keynote speaker. The top 29 holders will also earn special VIP access, a feat that required holding around $4.8 million worth of TRUMP tokens when the Trump Meme team held its first exclusive event last May.

That dinner drew intense scrutiny from democratic lawmakers over the potential for foreign actors to buy access to the American president, with Senator Elizabeth Warren calling it an “orgy of corruption.”

  • Ricky Gervais Rejects Fan Request to Host Oscars: ‘F— That!’

Ricky Gervais Rejects Fan Request to Host Oscars: ‘F— That!’

Ricky Gervais may have hosted the Golden Globe Awards five times, but he’s in no rush to take on Oscar hosting duties.

Hours before the Oscars were set to take place on March 15, the British comedian took to X to respond to a fan account named The Ricky Gervais Clips, which posted, “Repost if you wish @rickygervais was hosting the #Oscars tonight.” Gervais himself quote responded, writing, “Fuck that! 😂”

Gervais hosted the Globes in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020. His duties were remembered for mocking celebrities to their face, and swinging much more aggressively at Hollywood stars than many of his contemporaries.

Last year, Gervais spoke with Variety about his times hosting the ceremony, and said that his image as a brutal truth-teller was as much a marketing tactic as reality.

“The marketing thing is that, ‘It’s live. He could say anything. Oh, my God. He’s brutal. Oh, he doesn’t care about anything.’ All those are untrue,” he says. “I write those jokes. I look at them from every angle. I make sure they’re bulletproof. I go out with a beer, I pretend to be a loose cannon, but I’m not. I’m never drunk. I have like a sip. And I can justify anything. I’m never that brutal. It just seems like it.”

Gervais’ most recent comedy special, “Ricky Gervais: Mortality,” won best stand-up comedy performance at this year’s Globes. He won the same award last year, too, for “Ricky Gervais: Armageddon.”

  • Odessa A’Zion Bombed Disney Audition for ‘The Little Mermaid’ Live-Action Movie: ‘I Was So Nervous I Forgot the Lyrics’

Before Odessa A’Zion stepped into the role of Rachel Mizler for “Marty Supreme,” she was almost Ariel in the 2023 live-action “The Little Mermaid.” There was just one problem: She flubbed her audition.

Speaking with CNN and Variety on the red carpet for the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, A’Zion recounted the “really embarrassing” experience.

“I sang ‘Part of Your World.’ I was so nervous that I forgot the lyrics to ‘Part of Your World’ while I was singing it,” she said. “And then, because I was doing it in Ariel’s voice — like a princess voice —  they’re like, ‘Just do it normal.’ [And] I couldn’t do it normal. I’d memorized it in that voice.”

“I left like ‘That was the most embarrassing thing on planet Earth,’ and didn’t hear back, didn’t get a call back,” A’Zion continued.

In the film directed by Rob Marshall, the role ultimately went to singer, actress and songwriter Halle Bailey.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement at the time of the casting.

Looking back on it, missing out on the role of the red-headed mermaid didn’t deter A’Zion’s career at all; this year, she’s at the Oscars with “Marty Supreme,” which nabbed nine nominations, including Best Picture.

For her role as Mizler, Marty Mauser’s (played by Timothee Chalamet) love interest and childhood friend, A’Zion was nominated for both an Actor Award and a BAFTA Award in supporting categories.

A’Zion also stars as influencer Tallulah Stiel in Rachel Sennott’s HBO show, “I Love LA.”

  • Arc Raiders replaced some of its AI-generated voice lines, using professional actors instead

In an unexpected twist, humans have taken some jobs back from AI. Embark Studios’ CEO Patrick Söderlund recently told GamesIndustry.biz that the studio “re-recorded” some of the AI-generated voice lines in Arc Raiders with human voices, only after its successful launch in October.

“There is a quality difference,” Söderlund told GamesIndustry.biz. “A real professional actor is better than AI; that’s just how it is.”

With Arc Raiders’ player count peaking at nearly half a million users on Steam, the game’s breakout success was still marred by its use of text-to-speech AI. While there was no generative AI used for the visuals of the extraction shooter, Embark Studios paid its actors for approval to license their voices for text-to-speech AI, according to Söderlund. Even though Söderlund said that the text-to-speech AI was reserved for lines “that aren’t as essential to the immersion of the experience,” many players weren’t happy with this creative decision.

Responding to the criticism, Embark Studios is seemingly reversing course and relying more on its voice actors. Söderlund said that the studio pays its voice actors for their time in the recording booth and will “continue to bring many of them back as we carry on updating the game.” However, it’s important to note that Söderlund told GamesIndustry.biz that “some” of the AI-generated lines were replaced by voice actors, which could indicate that the studio isn’t looking to completely ditch its text-to-speech AI anytime soon.

  • XRP Faces Systematic Rigging, Major Holder Says

XRP Faces Systematic Rigging, Major Holder Says

A prominent $XRP holder is calling out what he says is a deliberate and recurring scheme to push the token’s price up before US markets open — then drive it back down once trading begins.

The claim has split the $XRP community between those who see a coordinated attack and those who say the data points to something far more routine.

A Chart, A Pattern, And A Name For It

The community figure at the center of the debate goes by Arthur online. He posted a historical price chart showing $XRP surging toward key resistance levels in the hours before US markets open, then quickly reversing after trading begins.

He counted nine separate instances of this sequence playing out since February, and says the same pattern has continued into March.

Arthur did not stop at simply flagging the moves. He attached a name to what he believes is behind them — calling it a possible “new Jane Street playbook,” a reference to the well-known quantitative trading firm.

🚨 $XRP IS BEING SYSTEMATICALLY MANIPULATED RIGHT NOW

Pumps straight to key resistance → US market opens → dumps 📉
    Happens over and over.

Is this the “NEW Jane Street playbook”?

$XRP down 44% from highs despite MASSIVE @Ripple news, ETF exposure, acquisitions, licenses…… pic.twitter.com/z6gqJwh6Eq

    — Arthur (@XrpArthur) March 13, 2026

He argued that the sheer number of occurrences, combined with the high volume of leveraged long positions open during each episode, makes coincidence an unlikely explanation.

What adds weight to his frustration, at least from his perspective, is the broader backdrop. Ripple has made headlines recently with billion-dollar acquisitions and continued ETF inflows.

Yet despite that activity, $XRP remains roughly 40% below its recent highs. Every time the price tries to break out, sellers appear and push it back down. Arthur sees that as part of the same problem.

Community Pushes Back On Manipulation Theory

Not everyone in the $XRP community bought the argument. A trader named Robert W entered the conversation and offered a different read.

His position was that price moves of this kind tend to repeat across multiple assets when US market liquidity flows in at the open.

Com’on Arthur. Not everything is manipulation.
The same pattern appears across multiple assets when US liquidity enters the market.
Looks more like normal liquidity shifts and profit-taking than a secret “Jane Street playbook”.

    — Robert W. | $XRP Facts & Figures (@RobertXRPFF) March 13, 2026

Profit-taking and liquidity shifts, he said, are the more natural explanation — not a coordinated institutional strategy.

Arthur rejected that outright. He pointed to the precision of the pattern: nine occurrences, each following a period of accumulation with a large build-up of long positions.

    Level Of Consistency

That level of consistency, he insisted, does not happen by accident. He called on several well-known voices in the $XRP space — including Vincent Van Code, Crypto Eri, BankXRP, Digital Perspectives, and Chad Steingraber — to take a closer look at the chart themselves.

The debate did not stay contained to price action for long. Another participant raised a broader critique of the crypto market, arguing that it runs largely on speculation.

  • Oscars Arrivals: Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Hudson Williams and More Stars on the Red Carpet (Updating)

Oscars Arrivals: Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Hudson Williams and More Stars on the Red Carpet (Updating)

Film and fashion fans will be laser-focused on the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday night as the 98th annual Academy Awards kicks off with a red carpet once again sure to be unrivaled by any other.

Hours before envelopes were set to be opened, #Oscars2026 social media had already launched into overdrive Sunday morning, balancing style and award predictions with tributes to red carpet looks of years past. From Halle Berry wearing Elie Saab in 2002 and Lupita Nyong’o’s pale blue Prada in 2014 to Lady Gaga’s 2019 custom black McQueen gown, paired with the iconic Tiffany Diamond, the fact that those mentions conjure instant mental images proves that the Oscars red carpet creates style moments that live forever.

How might any of Sunday night’s nominees and presenters join that pantheon? Best actress nominees Jessie Buckley and Rose Byrne and best supporting actress nominees Teyana Taylor and Elle Fanning have been inspiring style headlines since the awards season commenced in January, and Oscars 2026 should be no exception. On the men’s side, nominees Jacob Elordi and Michael B. Jordan join presenter Pedro Pascal and first-time Oscars attendee Hudson Williams as the fashion-forward guys who likewise should make talked-about style statements.

Once the Oscars 2026 ceremony gets underway at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, questions instantly shift to the films and creators who will take home the trophies. How many Oscars might Sinners win from its record-breaking 16 nominations, and might best director nominee Ryan Coogler be among them as the first Black director to win the award? Or might Hamnet’s Chloé Zhao capture the best director Oscar, becoming the first woman to win multiple times in that category, after taking the prize for 2021’s Nomadland? Finally, the best actor category is roundly agreed to be among the night’s most anticipated awards, with Ethan Hawke, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet and Wagner Moura each conjuring buzz among fans and critics up until the final moments.

Here’s a look at all the night’s high-wattage arrivals, which The Hollywood Reporter will update throughout the evening.
