  • ‘Paradise’ Season 2 Finale: Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Doherty and Executive Producer Talk Big Sci-Fi Twist, ‘Multiverse’ Plans for Third and Final Season

‘Paradise’ Season 2 Finale: Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Doherty and Executive Producer Talk Big Sci-Fi Twist, ‘Multiverse’ Plans for Third and Final Season

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for the “Paradise” Season 2 finale, now streaming on Hulu.

Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) has a new mission heading into “Paradise” Season 3 — but whether he’ll accept it is left up for debate by the end of the second-season finale of the Dan Fogelman drama, which released Monday on Hulu.

In the final episode of “Paradise” Season 2, titled “Exodus,” it’s revealed that the “Alex” that Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) has been hiding away is a super computer more advanced than any AI has ever been, to the point where it’s potentially capable of time travel. The device was created by Link (Thomas Doherty), who is now hellbent on shutting it down as he fears it has fully taken on a mind of its own and could be a detriment to the remaining people of Earth rather than a saving grace.

At the same time, Sinatra has formed the theory that not only is Link is actually (somehow, thanks to Alex) her deceased son, Dylan, but that Alex is the key to reversing what happened to the Earth, and Xavier is the one who needs to solve it. Why Xavier? Alex has provided instructions for a “User X,” whom Sinatra has surmised is Xavier. And before Sinatra sacrifices herself to shutdown the bunker while everyone else escapes its destruction, she tells Xavier he has to be the one to go to Alex and save them all — because she thinks he somehow already has in the future, leading to timeline anomalies like Link/Dylan.

    Disney

“I think this is Fogelman’s exploration of the multiverse. Any show that’s dealing with genre and science fiction or whatnot eventually loves to play around with the idea of, is time travel a possibility?” Brown told Variety. “And what are the rules that dictate our excursion into time travel? The first time that I really got geeked over it was ‘Back to the Future.’ So you’ve seen Marvel has dealt with the multiverse and all the different timelines. ‘Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ has done its own specific thing as well. I find it intriguing, because ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ is more real than people think. And it unlocks your brain in such a way that whatever you think is possible can be possible if you can conceive it.”

Brown continued: “And so now that this is introduced into our world, I think the question is, what do you really want? Do you want to go back? Do you want to move forward and leave it alone? Is it too mysterious to play with, to even tinker with, or is it too compelling to not? And different people have different decisions to make based upon where they are in life at that particular time. And you’ll see how that plays out over the course of Season 3.”

“Paradise” executive producer and Season 2 finale co-writer John Hoberg confirms that creator Fogelman’s plan is still a three-season arc, with the upcoming Season 3 — which will begin filming April 7 — serving as a “pretty definitive” ending for the story.

    Disney/Ser Baffo

    Disney

“If you think about where all of our characters are and what we were left with at the end, which is Xavier has been given this task by Sinatra to go to this second bunker, the question for me is, is he going to?” Hoberg teased. “Does he believe in what Sinatra is up to? Is Sinatra actually up to good? Does this machine do what she thinks? Or is she actually just dealing with her own grief, like she said? And will Xavier answer the call to do what she wants? I don’t know if I can name a specific genre [to describe Season 3], but I do know we’re going with, Xavier has been given a task, and I’m asking myself, is he going to follow through on this? And what are the repercussions if he does and if he doesn’t?”

    Disney/Ser Baffo

    Disney

What makes Xavier the chosen one in this case? Hoberg promises “Paradise” will answer that burning question, and many more, before the series ends. In fact, it’s been a mission of Fogelman and the “Paradise” writers’ room (which just pitched the series finale outline to Brown last week) to not leave any big loose ends: “There is a reason why Xavier is User X, and we’ll find that out,” Hoberg said.

“I think from Season 1, we established the moral compass that is Agent Collins, and that he’s willing to make difficult decisions for the greater good,” Brown added. “There’s something about him and why Dr. Torabi chose him to be part of the president’s Secret Service detail in the first place to come to the bunker that makes him uniquely equipped to deal with difficult situations in the clearest way possible.”

    Disney

Meanwhile, Link/Dylan is also dealing with an identity crisis: He’s maybe Sinatra’s son, he’s definitely the father of the now-deceased Annie’s (Shailene Woodley) infant daughter, and he’s potentially still leading the crusade to take down Alex.

“He knows that it’s feasible. Is it true? We don’t know yet. We’re going to find that out, definitely, in Season 3, so that’s why I don’t want to say too much on that,” Doherty said. “I think with Season 3, we’ll start to see all this information — I mean, one of those things, individually is hard to compute, to comprehend, never mind process it. I think we’ll see him start to process his daughter. We will start to see how he’s processed Sinatra potentially being his mother. We will start to see the loss of Annie.”

Though nothing can be confirmed yet. Brown says that the “coincidence” of Link/Dylan’s name and birthday is “beyond mere coincidence, but more like a coincidence.”

    Disney/Anne Marie Fox

    Disney

“There are things that we actually had in that finale that got cut that go a little bit further in trying to explain the connection,” Brown said. “I think they ultimately decided to take them out, because I don’t know if the science scienced, exactly. What can I say? Oh, my God! They are obviously connected. I don’t think it is just her grief working out. There’s a connection.”

    Disney/Ser Baffo

    Disney

By the end of the “Paradise” Season 2 finale, Xavier’s family has been reunited, but his wife Teri (Enuka Okuma) and children Presley (Aliyah Mastin) and James (Percy Daggs IV) now face a new challenge, along with the thousands of other people who have just been expelled from the now-destroyed bunker.

“You got the 10,000 people that Link had, the 20,000 people that were inside the bunker,” Brown said. “There’s no central leadership. You could say Link is leading the folks on the outside — but there’s a mass amount of people that came to do something and now it’s a matter of, do they continue on to destroy Alex? Do they change course? Is Alex not as important anymore? What do the people inside the bunker decide to do? Are they going to stay together? Are they going to branch off and try to find their own people? There’s going to be a lot of different groups that disperse throughout Season 3 and we will follow all of them.”

Doherty says that in “Paradise” Season 3 “it’ll be really, really interesting” to watch the dynamic between Link/Dylan and Xavier, as Dylan looks to parent his infant daughter (brought to him by Xavier only the “holy charge” from Annie) and continue on his quest.

“I think that they’re cut from a very similar cloth, but I think Xavier is a lot more settled as a human being. He’s older, he’s more experienced, he’s got more composure; whereas, where we leave Dylan, he’s still kind of full of spunk and full of justice,” Doherty said. “And, like younger people generally are, he’s got that testosterone and that, like, ‘this is the right thing to do,’ compelling them. It’ll be quite interesting for him to be around someone that shares very, very similar beliefs, but is also more of a realist than him. Is Dylan gonna learn from him, or is he gonna fight against Xavier?”

    Disney/Ser Baffo

    Disney

Xavier has other problems to deal with to: now that he’s reunited with his thought-to-be-dead wife, he’s got to explain his one-night stand with Dr. Torabi (Sarah Shahi) to Teri. “You will see in Season 3 that it has obviously been brought to her attention,” Brown said. “And you will see how they manage it as a couple. We’re not just gonna slide over it.”

Overall, the Collins family is happy to be back together, but much has changed in just the few years they’ve been apart as Xavier and the kids have lived in the bunker and Teri has survived on the outside.

“I think it’s a very different setup,” Brown said. “We also have two more white babies with us. Delightful welcomes to the tribe. I think he’s happy as a pig in slop to be with his wife, to be with his children. They obviously have been displaced, so they have to find out, what does life look like for them now, where they’re going to go, where they’re going to set up, who’s going to be a part of their tribe? His daughter’s getting older. She’s got a boyfriend, she’s walking off from her daddy. So there’ll be different challenges in terms of that dynamic. There’s gonna be something really interesting with our two newest members as well, with Bean and Annie. Now, Annie’s obviously with her dad, but there’s something there will be something there, too. The dynamics have shifted, and the shift causes a certain degree of friction which will compel us into action for Season 3.”

  • This Frankenstein PlayStation PCB reads games from microSD and outputs video over HDMI

We’re living in the golden age of retro console modding. If you have an old Game Boy Advance lying around, it’s possible to give it a new lease on life with aftermarket parts like an IPS display and USB-C charging. But as amazing as those mods are, most still require an original GBA motherboard with a working processor and RAM. That’s what makes the PlayStation Hybrid from YouTuber Secret Hobbyist so cool. Over the past couple of months, they’ve been working to design, prototype and build the ultimate PlayStation PCB, one that incorporates the best parts of different model revisions while adding a couple of modern conveniences.

The specific motherboards Secret Hobbyist’s PCB pulls parts from are the PM-41 v2 and the PU18, with the former being a PSOne board while the latter was sourced from a “phat” model. The decision to incorporate parts from different PlayStation variants makes a lot of sense if you know something about the history of the console. Between the release of the PlayStation in 1994 and the smaller PSOne in 2000, Sony made multiple revisions to the original design to address hardware issues and eke out cost savings.

One component that you can find on older models, but not the PSOne, is an Asahi Kasei-made digital-to-analog audio converter (DAC). Over the years, this DAC has gained something of a cult following among audiophiles, with some of the earliest models like the SCPH-1000 and SCPH-3000 being particularly sought after as CD players because they also came with RCA outputs, a feature Sony later cut from subsequent revisions. As for the PU18, it has a part that makes it compatible with the X Station, a CD replacement that allows a modded PlayStation to read games from a microSD card.

From the PSOne, Secret Hobbyist sourced the console’s GPU and CPU, which are more power efficient than the ones found on its older siblings. Lastly, they incorporated an FPGA chip from a Hispeedido mod kit to make their hybrid PlayStation capable of outputting video over HDMI.

The final result is a custom PCB that is even smaller than the PSOne’s PM-41 v2, draws less than two watts of power and works with modern displays. That power draw means the Hybrid PlayStation could be engineered to be a handheld. Secret Hobbyist still has yet to design an enclosure for their new Frankenstein console, but judging from the comments on their video, people are excited to see the final result. In the meantime, be sure to watch the full video to learn more about the project and see some incredible soldering work.

  • BOXROOM lets you build a cozy game room for your Steam library

Your game collection says a lot about you. With a cute new game, you can also give your collection a space that’s just as personalized. BOXROOM is a building sim where the whole purpose is creating a space to show off your game library. You can select furniture, paint and lighting, then you choose games from your Steam library to display on your virtual shelves. Titles appear in game boxes, giving it a throwback feel to the days where a game collection had to be physical. Once complete, the room serves as a launcher, allowing you to boot up a title from the game box. The demo is available now, and the team said that BOXROOM will launch in early access soon.

This is a fun idea, although it’s unlikely that you’d fit your entire collection into even this virtual space if your Steam library starts to number in the hundreds, or even thousands, of games. As with an IRL space, you’d need a warehouse rather than a cute, cozy room. But if you wanted to have a curated selection of your go-to titles in a customized virtual space, this might be a fun addition to your already sizable collection. Or, if you want a virtual reality take on a similar idea, EmuVR might be worth a look.

  • SEC decisions scrutinized as senator seeks records on crypto enforcement rollbacks

SEC decisions scrutinized as senator seeks records on crypto enforcement rollbacks

U.S. securities regulators have been under more strain than ever from critics this time around on rollbacks of cryptocurrency regulation, and a key senator asks whether they have internal information on any new stock trading or SEC policy decisions.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, the top Democrat on the Senate investigations subcommittee, has written to SEC Chairman Paul Atkins to share records and exchanges related to the government’s high-profile digital asset cases, including the dismissal of its claims against Tron founder Justin Sun.

Blumenthal’s request comes weeks after the SEC’s interim head of enforcement, Judge Margaret Ryan, departed. Ryan commenced the job near the end of 2025 and left in March of this year.

According to reports, Ryan was seeking to delve more deeply into pursuing fraud charges involving those in President Donald Trump’s inner circle. However, people familiar with the matter say he faced a setback because Atkins and other top Republicans on the commission opposed it.

“Ms. Ryan’s abrupt departure from the agency raises questions in light of her short tenure and reports that senior leadership intervened to prohibit the Division of Enforcement from pursuing cases against certain cryptocurrency companies,” Blumenthal said in the letter.

SEC drops high-profile crypto cases amid allegations of political influence

According to reports, tensions have risen over Sun’s case. During the Biden administration, the SEC charged Sun and his three affiliated companies with conducting unregistered sales of $TRX and BTT tokens. Charges that stood against him also included manipulating $TRX prices through wash trading and paying celebrities, including actress Lindsay Lohan and influencer Jake Paul, to promote the tokens without proper disclosure.

Under the Trump administration, the SEC dropped several high-profile cases against major crypto firms, including Coinbase and Kraken, which had been accused of failing to register correctly. In May, the agency also dismissed charges against Binance after alleging the platform had misrepresented its trading controls.

Just this month, the watchdog has thrown out charges against Sun, the Tron Foundation, and BitTorrent (now Rainberry) and ordered the latter to pay a $10 million civil penalty to the agency. Sun has been a vocal supporter of Trump and has made huge investments in Trump-family-backed crypto ventures, including World Liberty Financial and Trump’s memecoin $TRUMP.

“This is a clear example of how President Trump’s blatant crypto corruption creates back doors for his family’s business partners, creating a pay-to-play enforcement regime that turns a blind eye to grave threats to national security and consumer protection,” Blumenthal said in the letter.

Moreover, according to Blumenthal’s letter, Ryan’s short tenure raises concerns that political actors (in particular, the White House) influenced the decision not to approve or decline certain cryptocurrency cases.

The senator is also looking for communications between senior SEC officials and industry leadership partners, including the developers who run World Liberty Financial, now a cryptocurrency company supported in part by President Trump supporters, said Blumenthal.

Critics say the SEC’s recent enforcement approach, which was so aggressive earlier, has brought dozens of crypto‑related enforcement decisions in a single year and has since transitioned to a more lenient or selective approach. Under former SEC Chair Gary Gensler, there were 46 crypto‑related enforcement efforts in 2023 alone, the best year on record for the agency.

Legal experts note the pivot has been noticeable: after a series of disputes with the biggest platforms, the SEC in 2025 dismissed or paused litigation against several crypto firms, particularly exchanges and trading platforms, amid a major regulatory focus.

Blumenthal probes SEC shift as lawmakers scrutinize crypto oversight

The tone has shifted sharply throughout Washington. Supporters of the newly adopted SEC structure say that explaining the rules could bring innovation and clarity, and that enforcement will be lower at firms that comply with disclosure and registration requirements. Opponents argue that weakening enforcement could put investors’ interests at risk and grant bad actors impunity.

Blumenthal’s inquiry probes into the reasons behind this shift. In his letter, he specifically asked for SEC communications regarding potential enforcement against crypto companies, including interactions with political appointees or outside actors.

He expressed deep concern and discomfort with the abrupt leadership change and enforcement decisions that impose strict limits on the agency’s ability to prosecute corporate crimes in the fast‑paced digital asset space.

Industry reactions are mixed. Crypto advocates are betting that we are taking a step forward rather than moving from legal war to a firm rule-making scheme, and that, through various initiatives, they will see how different tokens and business models apply to rules in U.S. securities law.

For now, Blumenthal asked Atkins to provide records and communications between the SEC’s enforcement division and its leadership by April 13th. He has also requested records between his office and any member of the Trump family.

And so lawmakers and regulators alike will be closely watching as this record request goes out, to see how the SEC will balance innovation with its basic function of protecting customers.

Trump threatens to ‘blow up’ desalination plants in Iran if no deal reached

United States President Donald Trump has renewed his threat to “blow up” a range of civilian infrastructure in Iran, including all of the country’s desalination plants, in a move that would threaten the water source for millions of people and that experts say would be illegal.

Trump has been regularly warning Iran about possible US strikes against energy and electricity facilities, but he added water stations to the list of targets in his latest threat on Monday.

“But, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched’,” the US president said.

International law explicitly bans making civilian sites the “object of attack or of reprisals”.

Yusra Suedi, assistant professor in international law at the University of Manchester, said Trump’s threat “reinforces the climate of impunity around collective punishment in warfare”.

“This is clearly an act of collective punishment, which is prohibited under international humanitarian law. You can’t deliberately harm an entire civilian population to pressure its government,” Suedi told Al Jazeera.

Fears of collective punishment and war crimes

The Fourth Geneva Convention says: “Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited.”

Raed Jarrar, advocacy director at the rights group DAWN, said Trump’s threats represent “clear, public evidence of criminal intent”.

“Threatening to obliterate a nation’s power grid, oil infrastructure and water supply to coerce its government is not a negotiating tactic; it is textbook collective punishment and a war crime,” Jarrar told Al Jazeera.

Trump first issued a threat to target Iran’s electrical grid and energy infrastructure on March 21 while also giving Tehran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The US president later pushed the deadline back by five days before extending it again until April 6.

Over the past week, Trump has insisted that Iran is “begging” to make a deal and talks between Washington and Tehran are under way.

While Tehran has acknowledged receiving a 15-point ceasefire proposal from Washington through intermediaries, several Iranian officials have denied direct negotiations with the US.

Both Iran and the US have suggested that they are winning the war.

Despite the killing of several top Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, by the US and Israel, there is no public evidence to back Trump’s claim that there is a new government in the country.

Khamenei was replaced by his son Mojtaba, an appointment that Trump denounced.

Iran has also continued to fire missiles and drones across the region and close down the Strait of Hormuz, sending energy prices soaring across the world, despite Trump’s frequent threats.

The Iranian ruling system has not faced any major antigovernment protests or defections during the conflict as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spearheads the country’s war effort.

So far, Trump’s threats to “obliterate” Iran’s civilian infrastructure have not deterred Tehran’s strikes or affected the public defiance Iranian officials are expressing.

This month, Iran accused the US and Israel of striking a desalination plant on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Separately, authorities have said Iranian attacks damaged water facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Iran, which is less dependent on desalination plants for drinking water than some of its Gulf neighbours, has threatened civilian infrastructure across the region if its own facilities are targeted by the US and Israel.
