‘Backrooms’: How Kane Parsons Turned YouTube Project Into “Lonely” A24 Film With 30K-Square-Foot Set

Filmmaker Kane Parsons is ready to take Backrooms from YouTube to the big screen.

The 20-year-old Parsons, who will become A24‘s youngest feature director when the studio releases his horror movie in theaters on May 29, took the stage at CCXP Mexico on Saturday to share insight into his process. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell star in the film that counts James Wan, Shawn Levy and Osgood Perkins as producers and has a script from Will Soodik.

Backrooms adapts the YouTube series that Parsons began uploading to YouTube as a teen in early 2022. Taking its origins from urban legend and various web posts, the videos centered on an infinite maze of rooms with humming fluorescent lights and yellow wallpaper. In the A24 film, Reinsve plays a therapist who must track down a missing patient in a bizarre dimension.

Parsons explained that the movie uses the existing series and lore as a jumping-off point to examine its characters. “It does take more of a specific approach, where you’re seeing it through the lens of these specific characters — these individuals living these atomized, lonely lives,” he said. “In the film, there is rarely a moment where there’s more than one or two characters on screen at a given time. It’s a pretty lonely film.”

The filmmaker recounted teaching himself to use the free, open-source 3D graphics software Blender to create the world of his YouTube videos, which he continued to utilize for the feature. He and the team, including cinematographer Jeremy Cox, were careful to maintain continuity with the web series.

“I was working in Blender, modeling the sets, and then we would literally go and build them in real time,” Parsons said of making the movie. “We did a lot of tests there to make sure we were getting the general tone that people expected [from] Backrooms. We did 50 wallpaper tests to get the right shape of yellow.”

Parsons shared behind-the-scenes footage of the massive set getting built and recalled that he eventually had to step away from guiding the set construction to start filming exterior scenes. When he came back two weeks later to see the finished set, it was “the strangest, coolest moment on this project for me.”

He added, “The set was huge. We built 30,000 square feet of actual backrooms that we could walk around in. Actually, some people were getting lost. It felt like being there, which was really weird.”

Throughout the making of the film, Parsons was careful to maintain his initial logic for this world: “I always try to stay away from the idea that the backrooms is somehow a dreamy headspace thing where, if you turn around, the room could have changed. It preys on the human brain’s ability to map spaces and understand them. The hard part for that is, if you go back the way you came, you will go back the way you came, but it just keeps going and going and going. That’s where the confusion and the convolution goes. So eventually, you just have to give up trying to map it, whereas if it were constantly changing, you would be giving up a lot faster.”

For Parsons, who described first posting videos to YouTube at age 9 or 10, the Backrooms series struck a chord with audiences because of a “collective anxiety around the system — economic, industrial or otherwise — that has been building for the past few centuries.”

After praising his film’s cast, the director went on to explain, “The backrooms, to me, has felt aligned with what happens when someone goes through sensory deprivation on the individual level — and you go out in an empty room — and the body, the nervous system needs stimulation so badly [when] it’s deprived of it. It starts to find noise and information in the pattern of the walls and starts to take that noise more seriously than it normally would. It opens its threshold of what it’s willing to accept.”

  • 4 things to watch in Cavaliers-Raptors Game 4

4 things to watch in Cavaliers-Raptors Game 4

Brandon Ingram has yet to have a breakout offensive game in the first round vs. Cleveland.

    • Download the NBA App

The long, harsh Canadian nightmare is over, and this isn’t about winter. Or maybe so, because 12 straight times the Toronto Raptors had no answer for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs, until Game 3 of this first-round series.

It was a chilly stretch that ended a few nights ago when LeBron James was finally a no-show. Actually, that’s because the noted Raptors-slayer no longer plays for the Cavs. It was Donovan Mitchell and James Harden who took their foot off the pedal, allowing the Raptors to experience their breakthrough.

The Cavs-Raptors playoff series is streaking in another direction, if only for the time being. The Raptors trail just 2-1, and Game 4 will tip off Sunday afternoon in Toronto (1 ET, ESPN), giving the home team a chance to square the series and inject some suspense.

While the Cavs are the more imposing team and higher seed, anything’s possible for the Raptors, especially if Brandon Ingram can shake free of his shooting slump.

Just the same, the Cavs have been fairly consistent during the regular season, especially once their overall health improved, and rarely string together a stretch of poor games.

    “We will respond,” Harden said.

Here’s what to watch for Game 4 in Toronto:

    1. More from Toronto’s ‘Killer Bs’

While one of the Bs, Brandon Ingram, stayed mired in a slump, the Raptors turned to two others and got better results in Game 3. RJ Barrett and Scottie Barnes both dropped 30-plus points and were a combo that was too much for the Cavaliers to handle.

In a sense, those two were more effective than Harden and Mitchell and were a key factor in the victory. Both can cause trouble off the dribble and are capable of hot stretches. Barrett is the better shooter, Barnes is craftier. They find ways to get buckets and together can place stress on most defenses.

Ingram, Barnes and Barrett are a total handful if all three are on their game, simultaneously dropping shots and posing as threats. That’s when the Raptors are at their best, because they’re not a great 3-point shooting team. In this series, Toronto is still waiting for them to be fully in sync in the same game. If the ball moves and the shots drop among them, the Cavaliers have serious problems.

    2. More from Harden, Mitchell

Speaking of problems, this could go two ways. Cleveland has issues if Harden and Mitchell are mistake-prone and missing shots, as they did in Game 3. Just the same, the Raptors are perhaps helpless if those two are tag-teaming the Toronto defense. So it’s possible the series, not just Game 4, will be dictated by the production of the Cavs’ starting backcourt.

The Harden and Mitchell tandem is a wonderful NBA story, as these two lead singers have found a way to make each other comfortable and productive. That’s not easy to do, especially since Harden arrived just a few months ago. But egos were placed aside for the good of the team, and here they are.

Both players know what’s at stake. Mitchell has a bucket full of sterling playoff performances — 50-pieces and whatnot — in his past, but is still waiting for that elusive trip to the NBA Finals. Harden made the NBA Finals once, but it was well before he became Kia MVP James. In other words, a long time ago, and since then has suffered through a few poor performances in the postseason.

All of that can be washed away if they and the Cavs get hot. And their next chance is Sunday.

    3. More from the Tyson Family Weekend

One of the more improbable sports stories is still unfolding; two brothers are realizing their dream in pro sports. Jordyn Tyson, a standout wide receiver, was the No. 8 pick in the NFL draft on Thursday, going to the New Orleans Saints.

Meanwhile, his brother Jaylon is in the NBA playoffs and is a valuable rotational player for the Cavs. It’s the first time two brothers became first-round picks in two different pro sports.

When Jordyn appeared on the red carpet the day before the NFL Draft, their mom, Sandra, wore a Cavs shirt and their father, John, wore a wine-colored suit, in a salute to Jaylon and the Cavs. Jordyn also wore the shoes his older brother wore at the NBA Draft in 2024. The parents probably switched up and reflected the Saints’ colors later after the NFL draft, who knows.

The former No. 20 pick, Jaylon Tyson is making strides after being served a minor role as a rookie. The 6-foot-6 guard moved up in the rotation and took advantage of increased playing time caused by prolonged injury absences by the since-departed Darius Garland and averaged 10 points off the bench this season.

In Game 3, he was one of the few bright spots for the Cavs, notching 13 points and four assists. As the Cavs look to use their depth as a strength, Tyson’s role and minutes could prove crucial, especially if either Harden or Mitchell struggles again.

    4. More from Murray-Boyles

The Raptors made a wise decision to draft Collin Murray-Boyles at No. 9 last summer because the forward dropped plenty of hints during the season that he could be counted upon in the playoffs. Sure enough, Murray-Boyles was a difference-maker in Game 3 with good efforts at both ends.

He’s also pushing for more playing time and that’s important, considering the Cavs bring more experience on the front line. Murray-Boyles brings a physical presence and plays bigger than his listed 6-foot-7 frame. The Raptors could use his inside presence against Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

If the rookie follows up his 22 points and eight rebounds in Game 3 with another mature output, Toronto’s chances of winning will increase.

  • BYD’s next all-electric hypercar is a convertible that’s coming to Europe first

BYD may be known for its affordable all-electric cars, but that doesn’t mean it won’t dabble in the occasional hypercar under one of its subsidiary brands. Through its Denza subbrand, BYD unveiled the Denza Z, a hypercar that can push out more than 1,000 horsepower with an all-electric motor, at the Beijing Auto Show. According to CarNewsChina, the Denza A can hit 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds, rivaling the likes of the Rimac Nivera.

BYD first showed off the Denza Z as a concept during the Shanghai Auto Show in 2025. A year later, the Chinese EV maker confirmed its latest hypercar as a four-seater that will come in hard-top, convertible and “track” configurations. BYD hasn’t revealed the Denza Z’s full specs yet, so we’re not sure what differentiates the track edition. So far, the company has shared that it would use the company’s intelligent suspension system called DiSus-M, which is similar to Chevrolet Corvette’s Magnetic Ride Control, and its Flash Charging system. BYD also told AutoExpress that the Denza Z will have some of the features seen with the BYD’s YangWang U9, like autonomous driving and “tank turning.”

Surprisingly, BYD is planning to release the Denza Z to Europe first, with an inaugural ride at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in July. The automaker hasn’t revealed pricing yet, but it should be more available than BYD’s other hypercar under its YangWang subsidiary that’s limited to 30 units.

  • Hyperliquid’s (HYPE) Growth Story Meets Slowing Activity: Report

Hyperliquid’s (HYPE) Growth Story Meets Slowing Activity: Report

Hyperliquid’s $HYPE token rose 80% over the past 90 days, significantly outperforming Bitcoin’s 10% gain over the same period. This price action comes in the backdrop of a market witnessing geopolitical turmoil.

However, data demonstrates that fundamentals have waned relative to $HYPE’s valuation.

    Cooling Derivatives Momentum

In his latest report, crypto analyst Michael Nadeau said investors are increasingly “paying up” for each dollar of revenue, as the token’s fully diluted price-to-sales ratio reached 47.3, up 67% quarter-over-quarter and nearing record levels. This is an uncommon trend during periods when valuations typically contract.

Over the last 90 days, Hyperliquid’s perpetual DEX generated $153.8 million in fees, down 13% from the previous quarter but up 12.3% year-over-year, with 99% of those fees used for $HYPE buybacks. Average daily trading volume stood at $7.07 billion, after rising 6% quarter-over-quarter, while open interest declined to $7.6 billion, down 51% from its peak and around 15% over the same period.

The protocol continues to lead among decentralized perpetual exchanges with a 72% market share, though it accounts for about 5% of total volume when centralized platforms are included. In terms of capital flows, $3.36 billion is currently bridged into Hyperliquid, which is down 44% from its peak. To top that, $730 million has left the network over the last 90 days, including $500 million since early April.

    Mixed Signals

Activity metrics depicted mixed trends. Active addresses, for one, averaged 46,000 per day, up 6.6% quarter-over-quarter, besides strong growth in HIP-3, a framework that allows third parties to launch their own perpetual DEXs.

HIP-3 volumes averaged $2.58 billion per day, up 973% quarter-over-quarter, and accounted for 36% of total volume. Meanwhile, the HyperEVM ecosystem recorded $1.84 million in revenue over the period as it plunged 33% quarter-over-quarter, with active addresses also falling.

Stablecoin supply on HyperEVM rose to $1.83 billion, driven largely by USDC.

On token dynamics, buybacks were greater than issuance over the past 90 days, which resulted in net deflation, while core contributor token unlocks are ongoing through 2027. The report also found that buyback yield has declined to 2.55% on a fully diluted basis.

Certain areas reveal strong expansion, while others reflect cooling activity. As a result, the token’s price has gone up faster than the actual growth of the project’s usage and revenue, while different parts of the system are growing at different speeds.

  • ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Director Considered Adrian Grenier Cameo — Here’s Why It Didn’t Happen

‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Director Considered Adrian Grenier Cameo — Here’s Why It Didn’t Happen

While the original stars of The Devil Wears Prada, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt have all returned for the upcoming sequel, the director of the follow-up, David Frankel (who also directed the 2006 original), is explaining why Adrian Grenier, who played Nate, the boyfriend of Hathaway‘s Andy, is not in the film.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Frankel revealed that he initially did consider having the Entourage star reprise his role.

“I had an idea about sneaking him into a cameo, and in the end, it was just too late in our production schedule to make it happen,” Frankel told the publication before also noting that the film completed filming less than a month before its slated release date, so there “wasn’t time.”

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in July that Grenier wouldn’t return for the sequel. Months later, the actor eventually opened up about not returning for the second film, calling it a “disappointment,” and claimed that negative public perception of Nate was the reason his character didn’t come back.

“We’re all fans of the movie, whether or not we were in it,” Grenier told Page Six at the time. “Obviously, it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel. But I also understand there was some backlash with Nate, the character, so that might have something to do with it.”

Earlier this month, Grenier poked fun at not being asked to return in a Starbucks ad. “You might have seen the headlines — I wasn’t asked to be part of a certain sequel. But I’m good. Really. It’s all good energy,” he said. “So a toast to Nate. He made a mean sandwich. He loved his girlfriend, to a point. He wasn’t perfect. So let’s leave Nate in 2006 and keep this good energy going.”

When EW asked Frankel what Nate would’ve done in the sequel, he responded, “No, I probably shouldn’t say. But, I think I’m thrilled that he did a Starbucks commercial, which was really funny and so self-effacing. I love the humility and the comedy of it!”

The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters May 1. See the cast at the New York City premiere earlier this week, below.

  • ‘SNL U.K.’ Weekend Update Enlists Jimmy Fallon to Roast Jeffrey Epstein, Benson Boone, Lily Allen and More: ‘We’re Just Two Hosts, Sat Next to a More Famous Host, Asking Him to Boost Our Ratings’

‘SNL U.K.’ Weekend Update Enlists Jimmy Fallon to Roast Jeffrey Epstein, Benson Boone, Lily Allen and More: ‘We’re Just Two Hosts, Sat Next to a More Famous Host, Asking Him to Boost Our Ratings’

Ania Magliano and Paddy Young, the hosts of Weekend Update on “SNL U.K.,” enlisted Jimmy Fallon to roast Jeffrey Epstein, Benson Boone and Lily Allen, among others, in a bid to boost their ratings. Elsewhere in Weekend Update, targets for jokes included Meghan Markle, Ellen DeGeneres, Russell Brand and Michael Jackson.

After Magliano remarked, “It may seem like Britain and the United States have drifted apart. The special relationship is in trouble,” Fallon appeared from beneath the desk to place his hand on those of the hosts during the “Hand in Hand” sequence. “We’re just two hosts, sat next to a more famous host, asking him to boost our ratings,” Young said.

As romantic music played in the background, Magliano said, “Look Jimmy, I know America’s been seeing a lot of other countries, but we were your first love. We’ve given each other so much.” And Young added, “We gave you Harry Styles.” To which Fallon responded, with a broad smile, “Yeah, we took your Harry Styles and made Benson Boone. Our one flips.”

Magliano joked, “Sure, merging our cultures has gone badly in the past. Look at Lily Allen’s marriage.” Young added, “Sometimes it goes well. Look at Lily Allen’s album.”

Fallon said, “And yes, we may say things differently, but they mean the same thing, like aluminum.” Magliano corrected him, “Aluminium.” “Parking lot,” Fallon said. “Car park,” Young interjected. Fallon said, “Epstein.” Magliano said, “Andrew.” Fallon said, “Epstein.” Young said, “Mandelson.” Fallon repeated, “Epstein.” To which Magliano responded, “Stephen Hawking.” “Stephen Hawking was there?” Fallon asked in disbelief. “Stephen Hawking was there,” the hosts said in unison.

Magliano concluded, “On July 4th, you celebrate leaving us. But from this day forward, April 25th will henceforth be known as codependence day.”

Earlier in the show, Fallon had joined this week’s host, “Bridgerton’s” Nicola Coughlan, during her opening monologue. Foo Fighters were the episode’s musical guest.

Alongside the weekly host, “SNL U.K.” stars Al Nash, George Fouracres, Larry Dean, Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Celeste Dring, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi and Paddy Young.

“SNL U.K.” is produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio’s U.K. production team and Broadway Video for Sky and NOW. Lorne Michaels is executive producing, James Longman serves as lead producer, Liz Clare is the director and Daran Jonno Johnson is the head writer.

Alongside airing live on Sky and streaming service NOW, “SNL U.K.” is available to watch the next day on Peacock in the U.S.

  • ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Reveals Season 4 Premiere Date and First Trailer

It’s a bold new world for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as the series prepares to launch season four.

The team behind the Paramount+ show hit the CCXP Mexico stage on Saturday to reveal that the fourth season premiere will debut globally on July 23. The 10-episode season rolls out weekly on Thursdays through Sept. 24 for the series that was last seen with the season three finale that began streaming in September.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds castmembers Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding and Paul Wesley announced the return date and debuted the new season’s teaser trailer in front of a packed auditorium at the annual event in Mexico City. Anson Mount leads the series as Capt. Christopher Pike, while Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Martin Quinn and Carol Kane round out the cast.

“It’s a form of escapism,” Wesley said in explaining the enduring appeal of the Star Trek franchise and its optimism. “It’s a form of us believing in that kind of future.” The crowd was clearly thrilled to see the Vampire Diaries star in attendance and screamed wildly almost every time he took the microphone to speak or mentioned his former show. This led him to joke, “I’ve got to come to Mexico City more often.”

In the first footage, La’An Noonien-Singh (Chong) warns Nyota Uhura (Gooding), “Any of these missions could be our last.”

The trailer ends with James T. Kirk (Wesley) declaring, “Let’s boldly go.”

Wesley went on to tease about season four: “We explore a little about Kirk’s past and the demons that are haunting him.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped production last year on its fifth and final season. Season five will introduce two legacy characters from the original Star Trek series that premiered in 1966, with Thomas Jane set to play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami portraying Hikaru Sulu. The first three seasons are currently streaming on Paramount+.

Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serve as co-showrunners for Strange New Worlds. Executive producers for season four include Goldsman, Myers, Mount, Alex Kurtzman, Aaron Baiers, Dana Horgan, Alan McElroy, Robbie Thompson, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Chris Fisher, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.

  • OpenAI’s Sam Altman apologizes for not reporting ChatGPT account of Tumbler Ridge suspect to police

Two months following the deadly shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, OpenAI’s Sam Altman has formally apologized for not informing police of the alarming ChatGPT conversations seen with the suspect’s account. Before the incident, OpenAI banned the account belonging to the alleged shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, for violating its usage policy due to potential for real-world violence.

“I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June,” Altman wrote in the letter. “While I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.”

Altman noted in the letter, which was published in full by Tumbler RidgeLines, that he spoke with both Darryl Krakowa, Tumbler Ridge’s mayor, and David Eby, the British Columbia premier, and agreed that a “public apology was necessary, but that time was also needed to respect the community as you grieved.”

Eby, who also highlighted Altman’s letter in his post on X, agreed that the “apology is necessary,” but added that it was “grossly insufficient for the devastation done to the families of Tumbler Ridge.” Moving ahead, Altman reaffirmed in the letter that OpenAI would “find ways to prevent tragedies like this in the future” and work with all levels of government to prevent something like this from happening again. Altman’s latest commitment builds on the previous letter from OpenAI’s vice president of global policy Ann O’Leary, who said the company would notify authorities if it finds “imminent and credible” threats in ChatGPT conversations.
