Every month, I cringe when I check Netflix to see what TV shows and movies are losing their streaming status. October sees a lot of high-profile content leaving the service, including all of the Hunger Games movies, the live-action Death Note film, and shows like Dawson’s Creek and Poldark, among others. Here are our top picks to watch before they evaporate.
Halo: Seasons 1-2 (October 1)
It’s a tough time to be a Halo fan, with Microsoft doing mass layoffs at Halo Studios, canceling their upcoming game, and handing the franchise to Activision. And now Netflix is losing the rights to the 2022 TV series? Originally made for Paramount+, the show is uneven at best, but it does feature killer effects and spectacular action scenes. Ultimately, it’s a fun watch, and if you act fast, you can do both seasons before it’s gone.
The Wandering Earth (October 2)
Chinese science fiction movie The Wandering Earth is a deep-space adventure about a group of scientists working to push the Earth out of the Sun’s orbit before it engulfs our planet. When the gravity of Jupiter threatens to disrupt its trajectory, they must work fast to solve the problem before everybody on our planet dies. It’s a compelling and unique premise that’s executed very well.
Deadwind (October 29)
Nobody does brooding crime drama quite like the Scandinavians, and Finnish series Deadwind is worth a binge before it leaves Netflix. Homicide detective Sofia Karppi returns to work after the death of her husband and is immediately thrown into the middle of a perplexing murder case that implicates a massive clean energy company. It’s grim, engrossing, and full of twists and turns.
