As Microsoft digs itself out from today’s Xbox outage, it looks like T-Mobile is now experiencing downtime of its own.
Customers are reporting unresponsive phones, with devices flipping to SOS Mode. “My service has been completely dead for like ten minutes,” one user wrote on Reddit about an hour ago.
“Our teams are actively working the reports of technical challenges impacting some customers,” T-Mobile tells PCMag. “Any service impacts are in the process of being resolved and are our highest priority. We know how critical it is to stay connected, and every available resource is focused on resolving this as quickly as possible.”
Reports on Downdetector started climbing just after 4 p.m. ET., peaking about an hour later. It’s unclear exactly what regions are affected most; PCMag staff with T-Mobile phones were not experiencing any trouble in Southern California, the Bay Area, or Philadelphia. On Reddit, however, there are outage reports from people in San Francisco and Philadelphia, as well as Ohio, Florida, Connecticut, and Washington State, among other locations.
In January, Verizon was hit by a major outage, during which subscribers also saw their phones display SOS Mode. It eventually issued $20 credits for the downtime.

Online, some people also reported trouble with AT&T and Verizon. However, neither carrier has any confirmed outages. It’s more likely that AT&T or Verizon customers tried to call someone on T-Mobile and couldn’t get through due to T-Mobile’s outage.
“Our network is operating normally nationwide,” Verizon tweeted. “If you’re having trouble reaching someone, it may be due to the reported outage on T-Mobile’s network.”

Experience
I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag’s news coverage.
Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I’ve covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that’s now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
