Miss Small Phones? The 5.3-Inch ‘Enough Phone’ Will Try To Fill the Void

A trio of smartphone developers want to bring back the compact phone with a 5.3-inch Android 17 device slated to first arrive next May.

The project is called “Enough phone,” and comes from Austin Boer, Brennan Jordan, and William Stults, who are working to create a “premium, small smartphone” similar in size to the iPhone 12 mini. “After years of watching phones get bigger and bigger, we decided it was time for the return of the small smartphone!” the group says.

On Wednesday, the group launched their Kickstarter campaign to raise their goal of $250,000 in funding, after documenting their efforts to use a factory in China to build the device. The aim is to sell the product for $599, although early backers can receive the first batch of models starting at $399.

Currently, many of the best small phones are larger, with a 6.1-inch or 6.3-inch screen size, which can be a little unwieldy if you have small hands. The Enough phone promises to fill the gap with a device that promises to be “comfortable to use with one hand,” the trio said in their initial announcement. One member runs a “dumbphone” business in Dumbwireless, the other two manage Sleke, the maker of OdysseyOS, known as a “De-Googled Android With No Browser.”

The group has already created a non-working prototype and released the device’s “target specs,” which include using a MediaTek Dimensity 7500 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 1,520 by 720 resolution LCD Display, The specs are a bit underwhelming, considering the competition from more established vendors offering cutting-edge components. But the trio says the Enough phone is also meant to be a more minimal device, hence the name.

“Most phones are built to keep you engaged: big screens, built for gaming, streaming, and scrolling. Enough phone is built the other way: The screen is large enough for messages, maps, photos and music, and small enough to be easily put down,” the Kickstarter campaign says. The Enough phone will also come with a removable 3,500 mAh battery, and software updates are planned through 2032.
