Can’t Find Anything to Watch on Netflix? This New AI Feature May Be the Answer

Ever find it difficult to find something to watch on Netflix? The streamer is beginning to trial AI-powered discovery tools to better recommend its movies, TV shows, and more.

A new AI Discover tab is now appearing in Netflix’s smart TV app for what the company calls a “small group of members.” The option appears on the right side of the main navigation bar, next to My Netflix, and is called Discover, with a distinctive red diamond denoting its AI capabilities.

The tool will begin by recommending themes for what you may want to watch, with Netflix saying it wants this to be helpful across different viewing scenarios, such as watching alone, finding something to watch in a short time, or watching with the whole family. Its own press release gives examples of “Something Light,” “Scare Me,” “Quick Watches,” and “Family Movie Night.”

It will take into account what you’ve previously watched and what it thinks you like, and pull together recommendations based on its knowledge of you. You can also give feedback on the AI-powered recommendations via the Tune Your Recommendations button, letting Netflix know when something was good or when you don’t want to see it again.

Netflix says, “AI Discover is powered by a new intelligence layer we’ve been building that responds to what members tell us in real time and keeps learning.” It also notes this won’t be the only feature in Discover, calling this menu a “test kitchen” to help improve its content recommendations.

This comes at a time when Netflix has reportedly seen its users watch fewer hours than before, although the streamer hasn’t publicly confirmed this. According to a Bloomberg report in October, citing anonymous sources, Netflix has found that its customers are watching less and using the app less frequently than they did two years ago.

You’ll find the AI Discover menu should appear in the coming weeks, with Netflix saying it’s rolling out for select US members who use Netflix in English on a supported TV. It says it will “gradually” open the tool to more users, but it doesn’t say if that will be to other versions of its service.
