Apple’s HomeView isn’t out yet, but we’re now hearing about a next-gen smart home display being developed behind the scenes. According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple may release a new model next year or in 2028.
The next HomeView won’t be a replacement for the gadget announced last week, according to Gurman’s sources, but will instead act as a higher-end alternative, similar to how Apple’s HomePod mini and HomePod sit at different price points.
Apple’s next-gen HomeView is codenamed J595 internally, and may come with a significantly larger screen. The report says to expect a “roughly” 9-inch display compared with the current model’s 7-inch screen.
The biggest change will be a swiveling display, which Gurman says can turn a full 360 degrees, allowing it to automatically face you wherever you are in the room, using voice recognition tech to find you. The feature would let the screen follow you around a room during a FaceTime call, an evolution of the brand’s Center Stage tool.
This HomeView’s final name and launch date are up in the air. According to Bloomberg, Apple originally intended to launch its first HomeView in 2024, but various delays saw it pushed to next month. That extra development time may mean a faster turnaround for a new model, but Gurman’s sources note it may not be ready until 2028.
The big question will be the price: Apple’s current HomeView costs $299, which is higher than most of its rivals, such as Amazon’s Echo displays and the Google Home Hub series. If this is a larger display and a swiveling model, you can expect an even higher price tag.

The current HomeView is set to arrive on Nov. 13 for those who have preordered. If you order today, you may wait until early December for your gadget to arrive, with delivery dates currently between Dec. 2 and Dec. 9.
PCMag’s Andrew Gebhart was among the first people to try out the HomeView, saying, “The HomeView isn’t breaking any new ground, but it hits every single note I was hoping to see in Apple’s first smart display. Between the sharp design, impressive audio, seamless recipe integration, and clever multi-user privacy features, Apple seems to have nailed the fundamentals right out of the gate.”
