  • Vitalik Buterin Makes Important Appeal to the Ethereum Community: “If We Do This, We Will Regain Momentum!”

Vitalik Buterin Makes Important Appeal to the Ethereum Community: “If We Do This, We Will Regain Momentum!”

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin called on the ETH community to embrace a bolder vision, specifically stating that the application layer needs to be “thought from scratch.”

According to Buterin, the Ethereum ecosystem must break away from conventional thinking patterns to design next-generation applications without compromising its core principles.

Buterin stated that the Ethereum community needs to reassess its relationship with the application layer and the rest of the world. He argued that Ethereum’s core features—censorship resistance, open-source nature, privacy, and security (CROPS)—must be preserved, and that a radical questioning of current approaches, particularly at the application layer, is crucial.

The Ethereum founder stated last year that privacy has become one of the primary priorities for the ecosystem, signifying a radical shift in the application stack. According to Buterin, since Ethereum’s application infrastructure has not been developed with privacy in mind until now, it may be necessary to create a completely different application stack in this new era.

Buterin also noted that one of the key topics of discussion this year was the reassessment of the role of Layer 2 (L2) solutions. He stated that it was necessary to rethink “from scratch” which L2 models could create the strongest synergy with Ethereum, adding that this process required both a technical and a cultural transformation.

Buterin stated that the Ethereum ecosystem has long operated with a “how do we improve the existing system?” approach, arguing instead that a new mindset is needed. According to this new model, developers should reassess which applications truly create the greatest value on a robust Layer-1 infrastructure and an ever-growing toolset.

Buterin suggested that developers assume Ethereum is a completely empty network as a thought experiment. He asked them to consider how they would design initial applications in areas such as DeFi, decentralized social networks, and authentication, arguing that setting aside existing dependencies and outdated assumptions would foster creativity.

According to the Ethereum founder, this approach could be one of the keys to the ecosystem regaining momentum.

  • Who Won the Actor Awards Red Carpet? Demi Moore, Jenna Ortega and Others Top the List

Who Won the Actor Awards Red Carpet? Demi Moore, Jenna Ortega and Others Top the List

With perhaps one notable exception, women ruled the night at the Actor Awards, in both style and social media conversations.

By a wide margin, the ladies of Hollywood outdistanced men in earned engagement at the March 1 event, according to the latest results from The Hollywood Reporter‘s Red Carpet Power Rankings, in collaboration with Launchmetrics. While that’s not unusual — women’s fashion always sparks more online attention than men’s — Bad Bunny’s strong numbers from the Grammy Awards proved that it is indeed possible for a guy to vault to the top of the list. And while one man created an undeniable frenzy when his name was called — Michael B. Jordan, who picked up the best actor trophy for Sinners and in that moment became the Oscar favorite — it didn’t move the needle in social engagement across style categories. (Jordan looked terrific in Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann regardless.)

While Netflix, which streamed the awards, historically doesn’t reveal viewership data, the Red Carpet Power Rankings may offer an indication of the event’s audience popularity via its overall numbers. Across five categories — fashion, jewelry and watches, and accessories, as well as the top five women and the top five men — Power Rankings results totaled $71.7 million, up from $67.71 million in 2025. The numbers jumped in two categories in particular: jewelry and watches and the top five women on the red carpet. Statistics for the top five men were slightly down from last year, but more on that in a moment.

THR‘s Red Carpet Power Rankings are an exclusive partnership between The Hollywood Reporter and data firm Launchmetrics. Now in its third year of spotlighting brand engagement on red carpets, the Power Rankings measure the impact of both stars and the brands they wear during the awards season’s five major events: Critics ChoiceGolden Globe AwardsGrammys, the Actor Awards (formerly SAG Awards) and the Academy Awards, plus May’s Met Gala. Launchmetrics employs its proprietary Media Impact Value (MIV) algorithm to analyze and rank both brands and stars at each event. By assigning a monetary value to every post, social media interaction and editorial story, Launchmetrics determines a brand’s influence and earned engagement, quantifying for the first time the value of red carpet placements.

Who topped the list in style and social media strength? Here’s a look at the women and men who led the rankings in the penultimate awards show of the 2026 season.

Top 10 Fashion Brands: Louis Vuitton Casts a Stylish Group

    Getty Images

By THR‘s count, Louis Vuitton dressed nine stars for the Actor Awards, including brand ambassadors Emma Stone and Jeremy Allen White — though One Battle After Another‘s Chase Infiniti stood out partly due to her custom headpiece, a delicate beaded cap that felt inspired by the evening’s requested dressing theme, “Reimagining Hollywood Glamour from the ’20s and ’30s.” Fold in the other six stars in Louis Vuitton, many in custom designs — Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, Rhea Seehorn and Erin Doherty — and it’s unsurprising that the iconic French label nabbed the top spot with $6.3 million in Media Impact Value.

Of course, that makes Demi Moore’s results all the more impressive. Literal gasps could be heard from the red carpet commentators upon Moore’s arrival in a custom look by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli Haute Couture. Her bustier dress in black wool crepe was embellished with a trompe l’oeil embroidery of a crocodile tail down its front, while the back was finished with a bustle-like white tulle “cloud” accented with roughly 20,000 beads and crystals. Part of Roseberry’s spring/summer 2026 haute couture collection for Schiaparelli, the gown’s handwork required more than 7,700 hours of embroidery. The details surely were as delightful to viewers as the finished look on Moore, earning Schiaparelli $5 million in MIV.

Balenciaga’s top-three finish, meanwhile, can be credited to a combination of Actor Award winners — Jessie Buckley and Noah Wyle — as well as the star of one hot show: Ryan Murphy’s Love Story on FX, with Sarah Pidgeon wearing a look from Pierpaolo Piccioli’s summer 2026 collection. Yerin Ha, Sarah Catherine Hook and Michelle Randolph also wore Balenciaga, earning the house an MIV of $4.7 million.

Like Moore and her Schiaparelli, Thom Browne’s fourth-place finish can be credited to one woman: Teyana Taylor, whose gown featured an intarsia torso bodice that social media praised as “the naked dress that wasn’t,” earning Browne’s label an MIV of $4.6 million.

The one-two punch of Moore and Taylor is likewise reflected in the category of top five women, further cementing the idea that this pair of looks, the only gowns seen on the red carpet by their respective designers, were among the night’s most popular. The combination of Moore and Schiaparelli earned $4.5 in MIV, while Taylor and Thom Browne garnered $4.1 million in earned engagement.

Also in the top five: Jenna Ortega embraced the night’s dressing theme with her bias-cut gown by Christian Cowan, which the Wednesday star wore with Mikimoto pearls, thigh-high stockings and Jimmy Choo platform sandals. The much-discussed look earned the actress and her gown’s designer an MIV of $3.1 million. (Cowan placed highly among fashion brands not only for Ortega’s look, but also for Kristen Wiig’s sleek black gown.

Emma Stone’s lilac slip dress with matching cardigan by Louis Vuitton placed star and brand squarely in fourth place, while Infiniti’s look rounded out the list — together, that alone is $5.1 million in earned engagement for the French label.

Ultimately, the top five women’s listings solidly bested the men’s statistics, with the latter’s combined earned engagement, $5.03 million, representing less than 30 percent of the ladies’ performance, which totaled an impressive $16.9 million (a marked increase from the 2025 total of $13.45 million).

Top 5 Men on the Red Carpet: Connor Storrie Extends the Heated Rivalry Streak

    Getty Images

Hudson Williams blew up the Power Rankings results for January’s Golden Globe Awards, and now it’s his Heated Rivalry co-star Connor Storrie’s turn. Storrie placed first among top five men on the carpet in a Saint Laurent tuxedo, then circled back to the number-three spot with his Tiffany & Co. jewels as well. (His choice not to wear a shirt under that Saint Laurent jacket surely thrilled the iconic jewelry house, as it made his Mixed Cluster necklace in diamonds and platinum stand out that much more.) Together, the actor earned the brands $2.8 million in MIV.

Timothée Chalamet’s 21.4-million Instagram followers likely contributed to the Marty Supreme star’s second-place finish — though, notably, his account rarely posts his red-carpet appearances. His stylist, Taylor McNeil, however, often does. To finish out the list, The White Lotus‘s Sam Nivola finished fourth with $476,000 in earned engagement for his Dior tuxedo, while Jeremy Allen White dropped a couple spots from the 2025 Power Rankings, placing fifth in Louis Vuitton with an MIV of $451,000.

Top 10 Jewelry & Watches: Tiffany & Co. Wins the Night

    Getty Images

Storrie, of course, is among the reasons Tiffany & Co. finished first among jewelry and watch brands; the house also outfitted Teyana Taylor, Quinta Brunson, Kristen Wiig, Chase Sui Wonders and Hamnet director Chloé Zhao in the brand’s diamonds and gold. The result was a solid first-place finish, with $3.6 million in MIV.

Amid such high-wattage brands, a high ranking for an independent designer is always welcome news, and such was the case with the number-two and -three positions among jewelry and watches: Los Angeles-based Emily P. Wheeler, who provided Kate Hudson with diamonds to pair with her Valentino gown and cape, and London-based Jessica McCormack, who provided a suite of jewels to accent the Hamnet star’s Balenciaga gown. The placements netted earned engagement of $1.3 million and $1.25 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, Belperron’s fourth-place finish partly may be the result of a happy accident — quite literally. Gwyneth Paltrow wore a pair of vintage 1930 turquoise earclips from the house on the red carpet with her custom Givenchy gown by Sarah Burton — but much was made of the fact that, when the Marty Supreme co-star appeared onstage as a presenter, she was missing the one seen dangling from her left ear minutes earlier. Luckily it was located soon after the onstage segment, but the resulting stories that night and the next morning surely helped to propel the design by Suzanne Belperron into one of the top-five spots, earning an MIV of $1.1 million for the New York-based house.

Top 5 Accessories: Jimmy Choo Places First — with an Assist from Jenna Ortega

    Getty Images

Jimmy Choo dressed a healthy number of stars in its stylish shoes for the Actor Awards, including Aimee Lou Wood, Odessa A’zion, Dove Cameron and Chris Perfetti, but Jenna Ortega’s appearance in a Christian Cowan bias-cut gown with high slit surely helped to put the brand’s “Max” platform sandals in the spotlight. The combined result was a first-place finish with $726,000 in MIV.

Christian Louboutin placed a close second, dressing a similar number of stars that included Sarah Catherine Hook, Mindy Kaling, Tyler James Williams, Britt Lower and Janelle James. It’s reasonable to surmise that Jimmy Choo’s placement with Ortega, who currently boasts 38.9 million Instagram followers, helped the brand edge past Louboutin’s red soles.

A solid third-place finish by Tyler Ellis once again can be credited to the Los Angeles-based designer’s ability to provide stylish, Italian-made clutches to a variety of actresses, which at the Actor Awards included Ali Larter, Mindy Kaling, Emily Watson and Regina Hall, resulting in earned engagement of $382,000. Actor Awards host Kristen Bell is likely a key reason René Caovilla earned a fourth-place spot with $119,000 in MIV, while Milan-based footwear brand Paris Texas benefited from Sarah Paulson’s appearance on the carpet and onstage, wearing a ankle-length gown that was a vintage Yves Saint Laurent design from 1979. That placement edged the brand into fifth place with earned engagement totaling $104,000.

Up next: The climax of the 2026 awards season, the 98th Academy Awards, set for Sunday, March 15 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre and airing on ABC and Hulu beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

  • Byron Allen Buys Major Stake in Starz from Steve Mnuchin

Byron Allen Buys Major Stake in Starz from Steve Mnuchin

Byron Allen is back in the media M&A business.

The mogul, whose Allen Media Group owns The Weather Channel, a production company, local TV stations and streaming platforms, is buying a significant stake in the premium pay-TV brand Starz.

Allen has acquired a 10.7 percent stake in Starz through his investment firm and family office Allen Family Capital. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Allen is paying $25 million for the stake, acquiring it from the investment fund Liberty 77, led by former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Starz, of course, was spun out from Lionsgate last year. Mnuchin had been a major investor in that company, and joined Lionsgate’s board earlier this year. His interest, however, seems to be on the studio, not in the pay-TV and streaming business that Starz is in, hence the sale.

Allen, however, remains a big believer in the TV business, as the rest of his holdings underscore. Starz has been growing its streaming business in recent quarters as it seeks to offset the challenges facing the linear TV business.

Allen has been making moves: Last year he put his local TV stations up for sale, and sold some of them to Gray Media. He has also set his sights on CBS late night, inking a deal to have his Comics Unleashed (which he also hosts, as a comic himself) on at 12:30, with an eye toward 11:30 once Stephen Colbert exits.

A notice filed in connection with his purchase of the Starz stake adds that he may continue to add to his stake, and take a more active approach with the company.

“Consistent with such investment purposes, Allen may engage in communications with, without limitation, one or more shareholders of Starz, management of Starz and/or one or more members of Starz’s board of directors and may make suggestions or proposals concerning Starz’s operations, prospects, business and financial strategies, strategic transactions, assets and liabilities, business and financing alternatives, the composition of the board of directors and such other matters as Allen may deem relevant to the investment in Starz,” his family office wrote.

  • Punch the orphan macaque is outgrowing his plushie and making friends

Punch the orphan macaque is outgrowing his plushie and making friends

    By MARI YAMAGUCHI, Associated Press

ICHIKAWA, Japan — Punch the baby orphan macaque is outgrowing the orangutan plushie that comforted him through early rejection from his mother and other monkeys.

Images of Punch dragging around the toy bigger than him drew attention to the residents of a zoo near Tokyo. When other monkeys shooed the baby away, Punch rushed back to the toy orangutan, hugging it for comfort.

But he’s been using the toy less. On a recent day, Punch was seen climbing on the back of another monkey, sitting with adults and sometimes getting groomed or hugged.

“It was good to see him grow, and I’m reassured,” said Sanae Izumi, a 61-year-old Punch fan from Osaka who came to the zoo because she was worried about the baby monkey. “He is adorable!”

Punch was abandoned by his mother after his birth, presumably because of exhaustion. Zookeepers nursed him and gave him the toy to train him to cling, an ability newborn macaques need to survive.

“Helping Punch learn the rules of monkey society and being accepted as a member is our most important task,” said Kosuke Kano, a 24-year-old zookeeper.

Punch was so popular after images of him and his toy showed up online last month, the zoo had to set rules to make visitors be quiet and to limit viewing to 10 minutes to reduce stress for the more than 50 other monkeys.

Punch eschewing the toy most of the time now is a good thing.

“When he grows out of the plush toy that encourages his independence, and that’s what we are hoping for,” zoo director Shigekazu Mizushina said.

Punch still sleeps with his toy every night, but Mizushina said the next thing keepers want to see is Punch bunched up with other monkeys to sleep.

  • Cardano’s ADA Token Now Accepted at Spar Supermarkets in Switzerland

Cardano’s ADA Token Now Accepted at Spar Supermarkets in Switzerland

    In brief

    • Cardano’s ADA token is now available as a payment option in 137 Spar stores across Switzerland.
    • The brick-and-mortar retail payments option is available through Cardano’s integration with fiat on- and off- ramp platform DFX.swiss.
    • The partnership is “planting seeds” for a financial ecosystem in which “paying with ADA is as natural as paying with a card,” the Cardano Foundation’s CEO said.

Cardano’s ADA token is now available as a payment option in Spar supermarkets across Switzerland, following the blockchain’s integration with fiat on- and off-ramp platform DFX.swiss.

The integration leverages DFX.swiss’ crypto payment standard Open Crypto Pay, already used to enable payments in cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the USDC, USDT and DAI stablecoins.

Open Crypto Pay enables Cardano users to spend ADA tokens from native wallets to be used directly at the checkout for payment in Swiss Spar stores, by scanning a QR code. Stores receive payment in Swiss francs, “regardless of the cryptocurrency the customer paid in,” according to the Open Crypto Pay website.

The platform does not implement specific double-spend protection for brick-and-mortar merchants, calling it a “theoretical issue” as unlikely given the technical complexity and ease with which other methods of non-payment, such as “leaving a store without paying,” can be accomplished.

So far, 137 Spar supermarkets across Switzerland and neighboring Lichtenstein can accept payments using Open Crypto Pay—though according to a map on its website, stores in Geneva, Swiss capital Bern, and Davos, which hosts the World Economic Forum, have yet to be onboarded.

Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, called the integration “the beginning of a fundamental shift in how value moves through society,” in a press release shared with Decrypt. He added that the partnership is “planting seeds” for a financial ecosystem in which “paying with ADA is as natural as paying with a card.”

    Switzerland and crypto

Switzerland has gained a reputation as an early adopter of crypto, with some 350 businesses in the city of Lugano now accepting Bitcoin for payment as of December 2025.

While a citizen-led initiative has campaigned for an amendment to the Swiss Constitution to allow the country’s central bank to add Bitcoin to its reserves, the Swiss National Bank remains ambivalent about the prospect.

In April 2025, the bank’s chairman Martin Schlegel rejected the idea, citing crypto’s volatility and market liquidity as concerns. “Cryptocurrency cannot currently fulfill the requirements for our currency reserves,” he added.

  • ZeroHash Applies for National Trust Bank Charter as OCC Crypto Pipeline Grows

ZeroHash Applies for National Trust Bank Charter as OCC Crypto Pipeline Grows

    In brief

    • ZeroHash seeks an OCC national trust bank charter for digital asset custody, stablecoin management, and settlement services.
    • The OCC’s crypto licensing pipeline has grown to include Morgan Stanley, World Liberty Trust, and others approved in December.
    • Revolut is separately pursuing a full U.S. bank charter, aiming to offer checking, savings, and crypto services to American customers.

Stablecoin infrastructure firm ZeroHash has applied for a national trust bank charter with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, an independent bureau of the U.S. Treasury Department.

The application is for ZeroHash to become national trust bank, not a traditional bank—so that means the company isn’t seeking to offer retail banking, lending, deposit accounts, or FDIC insurance on client funds. Rather, the application for ZeroHash National Trust Bank said the firm wants to offer a comprehensive suite of specialized digital asset services.

“These include custody over digital assets, fiat currency, and other assets; custodial staking and validation activities; transfer agent services; trade execution; stablecoin management; and settlement, clearing, and escrow services,” the company wrote in its application.

Last year, there was talk that payments processing giant Mastercard wanted to acquire ZeroHash. But the deal fell apart, and in January, the firm raised $25o million at a $1.5 billion valuation.

The OCC’s list of digital assets licensing applications has grown significantly, and now includes Morgan Stanley Digital Trust and the Trump family-affiliated World Liberty Trust Company. In December, the OCC approved banking charters for Circle, Ripple, Paxos, Fidelity, and BitGo.

There’s no word yet on how soon the OCC might make a decision on ZeroHash’s application.

Meanwhile, British fintech firm Revolut has applied for a U.S. banking charter. Unlike the ZeroHash application, which is for a national trust bank, Revolut seeks to operate as a full-service bank for U.S. customers with checking and savings accounts.

“The United States is a key pillar of our global growth strategy,” Revolut said in a press release. “Filing for a national bank charter is a major milestone toward our vision of building the world’s first truly global banking platform.”

The firm has expressed interest in offering crypto services. Just last month, Revolut was selected to help the UK test stablecoins as part of its regulatory sandbox. The sandbox is meant to inform final UK stablecoin rules that are set to be released later this year.

  • Nicola Coughlan Says Drunk ‘Bridgerton’ Fan Went Up to Her in a Bathroom and ‘Started Talking About My Body’ and ‘I Wanted to Die. I Hate This So Much’

Nicola Coughlan Says Drunk ‘Bridgerton’ Fan Went Up to Her in a Bathroom and ‘Started Talking About My Body’ and ‘I Wanted to Die. I Hate This So Much’

Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan told Elle UK magazine that she was once confronted by a drunk fan of the Netflix smash hit while in a bathroom. The inebriated woman proceeded to openly discuss Coughlan’s body while right in front of her, much to the actor’s dismay. Coughlan plays Penelope on the Netflix series, with the show’s third season focusing on her love story with Colin Bridgerton.

“You know what was really bizarre was, when I was shooting that series, I was exercising a lot because I knew I had to, so I had lost a bunch of weight – I was probably a size 10 and one of the corsets was a size 8,” Coughlan told Elle about Season 3. “And then people talked about how I was plus size and I was like, ‘How fucked are we that I am the biggest woman you want to see on screen?’”

‘I remember this really drunk girl once talking to me in a bathroom being like, ‘I loved [“Bridgerton”] because of your body,’” she continued. “And she started talking about my body, and I was like, ‘I want to die. I hate this so much…’ It’s really hard when you work on something for months and months of your life, you don’t see your family, you really dedicate yourself and then it comes down to what you look like – it’s so fucking boring.”

Coughlan has regularly spoken out against body shamers during her run on “Bridgerton,” which recently streamed its fourth season. She directly called them out in a 2022 Instagram post that read: “If you have an opinion about my body please, please don’t share it with me…It’s really hard to take the weight of thousands of opinions on how you look being sent directly to you every day.”

She later told the Irish Times: “All I care about is the work. Bodies change, if I lose weight or gain weight or I do anything it’s no one’s business, all I care about is doing good acting and being judged on that.”

Coughlan told Stylist  in 2024 amid the release of “Bridgerton” Season 3 that she was adamant about going “very naked” for a sex scene as a direct response to the trolls who slammed her weight online. Coughlan collaborated closely with “Bridgerton” intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot on the scene.

“I specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included,” Coughlan said. “There’s one scene where I’m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like the biggest ‘fuck you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body; it was amazingly empowering. I felt beautiful in the moment, and I thought: ‘When I’m 80, I want to look back on this and remember how fucking hot I looked!’”

    • A new study reports that GLP-1 semaglutide medications may help reverse the effects of osteoarthritis in the joints.
    • The researchers say the drugs accomplish this by repairing tissue damage by reprogramming cells that maintain healthy cartilage.
    • Experts say weight loss is the most effective strategy to combat osteoarthritis, but regular exercise and a healthy diet can also help.

Researchers report that a specific type of GLP-1 weight loss medication may help reverse tissue damage in people with osteoarthritis.

A new study published on March 3 in Cell Metabolism found that GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which contain the active ingredient semaglutide, can help ease the effects of osteoarthritis on joints.

The findings suggest that the benefits go beyond weight loss, which, in itself, can ease osteoarthritis by reducing pressure on joints.

The researchers say that semaglutide drugs help repair tissue damage by reprogramming the metabolism of cells that synthesize and maintain healthy cartilage. This allows cartilage to generate more energy.

“This work not only highlights the potential off-target effect of semaglutide as an effective drug to treat metabolic osteoarthritis but also reveals a weight loss-independent repair mechanism that targets metabolic pathways and mediators essential to cartilage repair under osteoarthritis conditions,” the study authors wrote.

“This may lead to new strategies to develop disease-modifying therapies for osteoarthritis,” they continued.

Matthew Baker, MD, an assistant professor of medicine in immunology and rheumatology at Stanford University in California, said the study, although limited in size and scope, does provide a hypothesis for future breakthroughs. Baker wasn’t involved in the study.

“Most current therapies target symptoms such as pain rather than the underlying structural drivers of disease,” Baker told Healthline. “As a result, truly disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs have remained elusive despite decades of research.”

The other group contains the active ingredient semaglutide. The medications sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy are among them.

Both types of GLP-1 drugs have proven to be effective in helping people lose weight by using mechanisms that help suppress appetite.

Losing weight is considered one of the best ways to help reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis, especially in the knee joints. It works by reducing pressure on joint cartilage and lowering inflammation.

In their new study, researchers said they wanted to determine whether the reduction in osteoarthritis symptoms with GLP-1 drugs extended beyond weight loss.

They first experimented with an animal model, examining obese mice with osteoarthritis. Some of the mice were treated with semaglutide drugs while others weren’t. The researchers reported that both groups lost similar amounts of weight, but the semaglutide mice received better cartilage protection.

The results were due to a complicated metabolic pathway that affects how various cells produce energy.

The researchers then studied 20 people ages 50 to 75 with obesity and osteoarthritis. Some of this group, which comprised seven males and 13 females, received semaglutide medications while others did not.

The researchers reported that at the end of a 24-week treatment period, subjects who received semaglutide had significant improvements in knee joint function.

They noted that MRI analyses revealed thicker cartilage and recent cartilage growth in the inner joint areas among the semaglutide group.

Bert Mandelbaum, MD, a sports medicine specialist, orthopedic surgeon, and co-director of the Regenerative Orthobiologic Center at Cedars-Sinai Orthopedics in Los Angeles, said it’s possible that healthier cells provide better oxidation and can help preserve healthy cartilage. Mandelbaum wasn’t involved in the study.

“We’re learning more as we go,” Mandelbaum told Healthline. “It’s like trying to put together a big puzzle.”

“Rather than regenerating cartilage de novo, semaglutide likely stabilizes cartilage and enables limited repair by improving the metabolic environment within the joint,” said Baker.

It is a degenerative condition that causes inflammation in the joints. Some of the common symptoms include:

    • pain or stiffness in the joints
    • loss of flexibility
    • reduced range of motion
    • tenderness when pressing on an affected area
    • grating or clicking sounds when joints are moved
    • bone spurs

Osteoarthritis is caused by gradual joint and cartilage damage. Risk factors include:

    • genetics
    • previous injuries
    • being over the age of 50
    • menopause
    • having an occupation that requires kneeling, climbing, or heavy lifting
    • obesity

Mandelbaum and Baker agreed that weight is the number one factor in the development and progression of osteoarthritis.

“There is no question that there is an association between osteoarthritis and body weight,” said Mandelbaum.

“Excess body weight is one of the strongest modifiable risk factors for osteoarthritis, particularly for knee osteoarthritis,” said Baker. “Higher body mass increases mechanical load across joints, accelerating cartilage wear with every step.”

Baker noted that osteoarthritis can be difficult to treat.

“Osteoarthritis is difficult to treat because cartilage has very limited intrinsic healing capacity due to its avascular, low-cellularity structure,” he said. “Osteoarthritis is also biologically heterogeneous, involving cartilage, bone, synovium, nerves, and systemic metabolic factors rather than a single disease pathway.”

Mandelbaum said there are lifestyle factors people can adopt to help lower the risk of osteoarthritis as well as its painful effects. They include:

    • maintaining a healthy body weight
    • exercising regularly
    • adopting a plant-based diet such as the Mediterranean diet
    • limiting alcohol consumption

Baker agreed there are strategies to help reduce risks.

“Maintaining a healthy weight or preventing further weight gain is one of the most effective ways to reduce osteoarthritis risk, particularly for the knees,” he said.

“Regular physical activity, including low impact aerobic exercise and strength training, helps preserve joint function, improve biomechanics, and reduce pain,” he added. “Preventing joint injuries through balance training, fall prevention, and appropriate footwear is especially important in older adults.”

“Managing metabolic health conditions such as diabetes and insulin resistance may also reduce osteoarthritis risk by limiting systemic inflammatory and metabolic stress on joint tissues,” Baker said.

The latest research is not the first to report that GLP-1 drugs have benefits beyond weight loss.

In a 2023 study, researchers said that GLP-1 drugs’ anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce cancer risks.

In 2025, researchers reported that GLP-1 medications can reduce the risk of sudden death and hospitalization in people with a common type of heart failure.

In another 2025 study, GLP-1 drugs were found to be beneficial in lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke in people with type 2 diabetes.

    • Looksmaxxing, a social media-driven trend encouraging men to aggressively “optimize” their appearance, is gaining popularity.
    • It’s related to similar appearance-based trends, like softmaxxing and hardmaxxing.
    • While often framed as self-improvement, experts warn these trends can fuel body dysmorphia, anxiety, eating disorders, and even self-harm.
    • Young men may be particularly vulnerable due to several factors, including online messaging about masculinity and worth.

A growing trend on social media is encouraging young men to “maximize” their appearance.

Known as looksmaxxing, the trend focuses on pursuing the “ideal” face and body. It follows similar social media trends, known as softmaxxing and hardmaxxing, which encourage everything from intensive grooming routines to cosmetic procedures and extreme body modification.

While proponents say these practices can be empowering, mental health experts warn they can fuel body dysmorphia, anxiety, and other unhealthy behaviors.

Jason Fierstein, MA, LPC, founder of Phoenix Men’s Counseling, said these trends are toxic and harmful.

“Young men fall into this false sense of acceptance, and what they believe women want from them,” he told Healthline. “They can get caught up in potentially lifelong struggles with feeling inadequate and handling that inadequacy.”

He further described looksmaxxing as a “social media-driven body dysmorphia trend.”

“People will focus their energies on improving their physique based on feelings of inferiority or inadequacy,” Fierstein said.

“Men can get caught in a cycle of trying to ‘optimize’ their looks, but as mental health clinicians, we know that if you’re feeling inadequate or inferior, those are the issues to work on with a qualified therapist.”

While the terminology differs, the trends all have one thing in common: the desire to obsessively change one’s appearance.

“Looksmaxxing is essentially self-improvement put on overdrive. It’s reframing the male physique as something to be engineered,” Fierstein explained.

While softmaxxing involves subtler changes to one’s appearance, often achieved through grooming and lifestyle adjustments, hardmaxxing is more extreme.

“It involves serious methods to change your looks, such as nose jobs, Botox, hair transplants, and chin surgery. The obvious issue with this is that once you open that Pandora’s Box, it’s hard to close the lid,” Fierstein noted.

Christine Ruberti-Bruning, MA, ATR-BC, CEDS, LPC, licensed therapist and certified eating disorder specialist, summed up the differences.

“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look good, and caring for your appearance can build confidence and be gender affirming. But the big difference is that looksmaxxing is rooted in self-hate and trying to fit in, at the cost of your health and safety,” she pointed out.

“Hardmaxxing, meanwhile, seems to be dipping its toe into self-harm territory, especially some of its associated trends, like smashing your face with a hammer.”

Why does looksmaxxing seem to be resonating with young men in particular?

Fierstein said young men, especially teens, are typically at a stage of their lives when they are still figuring out who they are, and many may be searching for ways to project what they perceive as “the ‘correct’ version of masculinity.”

Fierstein believes trends like looksmaxxing may be related to incel culture and the manosphere, too.

“It started several years ago, with male gurus like Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, and the Tate brothers. These types of ‘masculine’ influencers led men astray,” he said.

Ruberti-Bruning shared another perspective about potential contributing factors.

“Mental health issues and loneliness are also prevalent right now, making young men especially vulnerable,” she noted.

Recognizing the line between taking pride in your appearance and an unhealthy obsession with how you look can be challenging for many people.

“Self-improvement practices become harmful when anxiety is the main motivator; when your rituals are taking up so much mental space that you can’t be present in your life and relationships,” Ruberti-Bruning said.

There are several risks associated with these types of unhealthy behaviors.

Eating disorders and self-harm behaviours are commonly associated with body dysmorphia, anxiety, and low self-esteem,” Ruberti-Bruning said.

“Men are at risk of feeling shame around their bodies due to societal messaging that they must be muscular and fit. And for some men, it can feel like a threat to their masculinity and self-worth.”

Fierstein said that, for some people who attempt to make purely superficial changes to their physique, it can open the door to harmful, obsessive psychological needs.

“It can spin out of control, and you may feel you need to do something to help yourself feel better rather than feeling comfortable in your own skin.”

Ultimately, he said, healthy self-improvement usually doesn’t look like the kind of self-care content that’s popular on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

“It’s about taking care of yourself from the inside,” he said.

Practising greater self-acceptance isn’t something that happens overnight, but there are healthy steps you can take to begin that journey.

Firstly, Ruberti-Bruning said having complicated feelings about your body and appearance is valid and natural.

She suggested “leaning into” that and finding an outlet for it.

“Creativity is a great way to let those feelings out in a way that might even be fun. Consider drawing, collaging, or making a book to document your journey,” she advised.

While social media use can fuel unhealthy behaviors and feelings, there are ways to reduce these risks.

“Follow accounts that promote body acceptance and healthy masculinity. Or follow people who don’t fit into the narrow view of masculinity perpetuated by society,” Ruberti-Bruning said.

And finally, spend more time with friends and family.

“It sounds simple, but feeling connected to others helps us get out of our own heads. Our communities can help us stay true to ourselves,” Ruberti-Bruning said.
