NASA Pivots Artemis Program Toward Building Permanent Base on the Moon

    In brief

    • NASA is shifting its Artemis strategy toward building a permanent base on the Moon.
    • Administrator Jared Isaacman says the lunar surface will serve as a testing ground for Mars missions.
    • The agency expects to invest about $20 billion over seven years to build the base through dozens of missions.

NASA is shifting the focus of its Artemis Moon program toward building a permanent base on the lunar surface.

The agency said on Tuesday the change reflects a broader strategy to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon as a “foundation for an enduring lunar base and the next step toward Mars.”

During a presentation at the NASA “Ignition” event in Washington, D.C., NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the space agency is placing greater emphasis on surface operations to support technology testing, scientific research, and preparation for Mars missions.

“Shifting NASA workforce priority to the surface has advantages for safety, technology demonstration, and science,” Isaacman said. “The surface is really the proving ground for future Mars initiatives.”

Under the revised plan, NASA will pause development of the orbiting Gateway station and redirect funding and engineering resources toward lunar surface infrastructure. However, Isaacman said the move “does not preclude revisiting the orbital outpost in the future.”

    Three phases

In phase one, the agency will shift from infrequent lunar missions to a repeatable approach using the Commercial Lunar Payload Services program and the Lunar Terrain Vehicle initiative. Robotic landings will deliver rovers, instruments, and technology demonstrations to test mobility, power systems, communications, navigation, and other surface operations.

“We will dramatically expand lunar landings through the CLPS and LTV programs, delivering rovers, instruments, and technology payloads,” Isaacman said. Phase one, he added, is about “moving from infrequent, bespoke efforts to a templated approach that will generate significant learning through experimentation.”

In phase two, NASA plans to deploy semi-habitable infrastructure and routine logistics to support regular astronaut operations on the Moon.

Canada, Italy, and Japan will contribute to building the lunar base, including the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s pressurized rover, Italy’s multi-purpose habitation module, and Canada’s Lunar Utility Vehicle.

In phase three, NASA will deliver heavier infrastructure needed to sustain a long-term human presence on the Moon as cargo-capable landing systems come online, the agency said.

“The moon base will not appear overnight,” Isaacman said. “We will invest approximately $20 billion over the next seven years and build it through dozens of missions, working together with commercial and international partners toward a deliberate and achievable plan.”

Beyond its Moon operation, NASA said it plans to launch Space Reactor-1 Freedom, a nuclear-powered spacecraft, to Mars by 2028. The mission aims to test nuclear electric propulsion, which officials say is needed to transport heavy cargo to deep-space destinations where solar power is limited.

NASA’s announcement comes as a new space race ramps up, with companies such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX pursuing their own missions to the Moon and Mars.

Last year, Musk said the company planned to launch its massive Starship rocket to Mars by the end of 2026, carrying Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots.

The shift also alters NASA’s upcoming flight plans. Artemis III, originally scheduled for 2024, is now planned for 2027. Artemis IV, which would follow in 2028, is billed as “humanity’s return to the lunar surface” and would launch with a crewed lunar landing.

After Artemis V, NASA said it plans to transition to sending crews to the Moon twice a year.

“The goal is not just to reach the Moon, but to stay,” the White House wrote on X, adding that America “will never give up the Moon again.”

NASA did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s Request for comment.

Mohamed Salah: Is Liverpool exit the end? Can World Cup spur Egypt star?

Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool exit may not be the greatest footballing surprise, but it does leave many questions about the future of one of the Premier League’s greatest – and undoubtedly Africa’s best.

The Egypt international has risen to the top of club football with the Merseysiders, a sleeping giant before Salah was the star of two Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League crown.

The public fallout with Reds’ manager Arne Slot this season meant the end of his time at Anfield was inevitable – even after a PR patch-up and return from a club-imposed exile following his own criticism of the season and the club’s handling of him.

Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at what future options and inspirations the 33-year-old has ahead of him, or whether this is the end of the Egyptian king’s reign.

The end of a Premier League era for Salah

A further stint in the English top flight with a move to another Premier League club is surely off the table for any number of reasons, despite Salah’s stats suggesting the Egyptian star would have no problem maintaining his performance levels in the number one league in the world.

Sentimentality and loyalty will be at the forefront of Salah’s thinking. His farewell message on social media to the Liverpool fans, on announcing on Tuesday his departure at the end of the season, confirms the fact that it would be very difficult to line up for a domestic rival.

Only a very limited number of Premier League teams would be able to afford Salah, mainly the clubs regularly in and around the UEFA Champions League qualifying spots. Almost instantly ruled out are Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United – the latter for even more obvious reasons, as Liverpool’s greatest adversaries, than just jostling for positions.

Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur – albeit a club facing potential relegation this season – could be considered options without the fall from grace appearing too deep for a player, who was one of Europe’s hottest properties as recently as a season ago.

The financial options for those clubs are limited, though, and attracting Salah with a financial offer of the size required to match other suitors will be beyond those three, without breaking their own wage structures.

Will the Saudi Pro League renew its interest in Salah?

The most likely option for Salah has to be a move to Saudi Arabia. When the fallout between Salah and Liverpool hit the headlines this season, the Saudi Pro League (SPL) wasted no time in rolling out the red carpet for an immediate move.

Having signed superstar names like Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, while missing out on Lionel Messi, only the signing of the greatest Arab player to feature in the top league in the region could outdo what has already been achieved.

The switch to the SPL has long been touted for this reason, well before this season’s rumblings at Anfield, and a move for Salah has appeared an obvious progression for him once his time in European football was up.

The speed of Salah’s exit from Liverpool, with this season’s unrest, has perhaps been the only shock.

Can the MLS muscle in on Salah?

The other most likely option for Salah is a move to Major League Soccer. From David Beckham to Lionel Messi, the United States’ top flight has sought to build its name on star names from the global game long before the SPL threw its hat into the ring as a challenger to European domination of club competitions.

The MLS not only want domestic success but they see their branding as a global aspiration – to bring the world’s game to the US. Snapping Salah from under Saudi noses is possible, but it would be an astonishing coup.

To snatch the best African and Arabic football from a region that would covet the signing so highly would be a hammer blow in the battle between the two best-paying leagues outside of Europe.

Should the MLS make a move for Salah, then surely their most compelling selling point would be to capitalise on the uncertainty in the Middle East.

A move for Salah and his young family to the US would also bring the glitz and glamour that MLS has offered to the likes of Messi, and also dined out on with the help of a global brand icon like Beckham, who co-owns the club Messi plays for, Inter Miami.

Could a move to Spain, Italy, France, or Germany keep Salah in Europe?

There is little doubt that Salah’s stats will still attract the interest of some of Europe’s top clubs. Domestically, Salah will have a field day in any of the continent’s top flights, outside the Premier League.

Wages would again limit the pool of contenders, though. From Paris Saint-Germain to Bayern Munich, the money would be there to pay for Salah, while outside Real Madrid and Barcelona, it is unlikely anyone else in Spain, or indeed all of Italy, could push the budgets too far.

Sealing two years of an elite player, not far from the top of his game, could be a possibility, although it seems a longer shot than mega deals likely to be tabled from Saudi Arabia and the US.

Could this be the end, or will Egypt’s glory at the World Cup and AFCON spur Salah?

While Salah’s days in the best league in the world appear to be coming to a close, and with it the top table of European competition too, that does not mean this has to be the end of the road.

While club glory is unlikely to offer the dizzying heights of previous glories again, Salah will not want his story and illustrious career to wane in this fashion – and there are other matters for Salah to settle.

No matter where Salah ends up now, it is likely to be a step down. Only Real Madrid and Barcelona could offer a similar level of club exposure for the forward.

There are two great matters – one of them an enormous itch – that will still spur Salah.

Although regarded, quite rightly, as an Egyptian king by his home nation and as Africa’s greatest by the wider audience, Salah has not led Egypt to international glory – most especially at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt were knocked out in the semifinals in the last edition by Senegal in January. Many speculated that Salah’s last chance at AFCON glory may have passed.

A downgrade in club football may well elongate Salah’s international career, though, and with another AFCON coming in 2027, the forward will surely not have given up on finally lifting his continent’s greatest prize – one that his nation has claimed a record seven times overall.

First, however, is the FIFA World Cup 2026. Indeed, upon exiting AFCON, the Egypt manager said he hoped that pain could inspire even greater glory.

“It has been very good preparation for us, we’ve tried several systems of play throughout the tournament and played against different types of opponents,” Hossam Hassan said of the 1-0 loss to Segenal.

“We came close to the final, but that’s football.

“I’m satisfied with all that happened and what we achieved. We have a good team.”

Fellow North African nation, Morocco, proved at Qatar 2022 what can be achieved when they became the first country from the continent to reach the last four of a World Cup.

Egypt will not set their sights any lower than taking their record haul of AFCON titles – although not having won one since 2010 – to the global stage. Surpassing the feat achieved by the Atlas Lions in Qatar will now be at the forefront of all African nations moving forward.

Along with finally getting his hands on an AFCON title, a sign-off on the showpiece event of world football will be a far more fitting finale for an award and trophy-laden career than a dispute with the club where he is adored, a backdoor exit to the domestic game.

Usher Says Diddy ‘Has Been Misrepresented’ After Sex Trafficking Trial: ‘Certain People Are Prosecuted’ and ‘Not Recognized for the Greatness They Offer’

Usher recently gave a video interview to Forbes where he defended Sean “Diddy” Combs and said the disgraced rapper and entertainment mogul has been “misrepresented.”

The Bad Boy Records founder was sentenced in October to 50 months behind bars after he was convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. (His release from prison has since been moved up to April 2028.) Combs’ 2025 criminal trial ended with a split verdict, as he was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, avoiding serious charges that could have landed him in prison for decades.

Asked by Forbes to name a word that comes to mind when he heard Combs’ name, Usher responded: “Legacy.”

“In many ways, I think certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness that they offer,” Usher explained. “I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been misrepresented. I’m not saying that every man is perfect. I’m not saying that all of us don’t have flaws. But I can’t with any sense of humanity not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as businessmen, for us as people who have transitioned culture and ideas into something that’s tangible.”

“So many people benefitted from what he created and I acknowledge that,” Usher continued, adding: “That’s who I see that man as. And that’s what I choose to remember. I put respect on his name because I realized that what I learned as a businessman before I even understood what business was came as a result of seeing the incredible things that he was able to do and the way that he positioned himself as a businessman.”

Combs’ 2025 trial began in early May and featured 34 witnesses accusing the rapper-producer of crimes ranging from drug distribution to physical abuse to sexual assault. A key piece of video evidence from 2016 depicted Combs violently beating his then-girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, the star witness of the trial who delivered a grueling four-day testimony. During the trial, Combs’ lawyers admitted to his pattern of domestic violence, reminding the jury that Combs was not charged with that specific crime.

Combs’ lead counsel Marc Agnifilo said in an interview with Variety after the trial that his client was hoping to “make something special out of his life,” adding that making more music is “way down the road.”

  • Oscar-Winning Pioneering Chinese-American Cinematographer James Wong Howe Gets Biopic, With Herman Yau to Direct (EXCLUSIVE)

Oscar-Winning Pioneering Chinese-American Cinematographer James Wong Howe Gets Biopic, With Herman Yau to Direct (EXCLUSIVE)

Hong Kong filmmaker Herman Yau has been attached to direct “The Cinematographer,” a biographical feature on the life of pioneering Chinese-American cinematographer James Wong Howe.

The attachment was made during the recently concluded Hong Kong FilMart.

Award-winning art director and costume designer Man Lim Chung, best known for “In the Mood for Love,” has also joined the production, taking on both design roles. His reputation for meticulous period work will be central to recreating the world Wong Howe inhabited across more than five decades in Hollywood, from the silent era through the Golden Age of cinema.

Yau, whose credits span more than 100 films including the “Shock Wave” and the “White Storm” franchises, brings a career defined by versatility across drama, action, historical and socially conscious filmmaking. His attachment marks a significant step forward for what is being positioned as an international co-production aimed at global audiences.

“The Cinematographer” would be the first-ever biopic devoted to Wong, a two-time Academy Award winner who collected 10 nominations for best cinematography over the course of his career, winning for “The Rose Tattoo” (1955) and “Hud” (1963). His other nominated films were “Algiers” (1938), “Abe Lincoln in Illinois” (1940), “Kings Row” (1942), “The North Star” (1943), “Air Force” (1943), “The Old Man and the Sea” (1958), “Seconds” (1966) and “Funny Lady” (1975) – his final film as cinematographer. Members of the International Cinematographers Guild have ranked him among the 10 most influential cinematographers in film history.

Wong was born in Guangdong, China, and went to the U.S. at the age of five, eventually settling in Washington state. As a teenager he competed as a professional boxer before finding his way to Hollywood, where he first sought work carrying equipment for Jesse Lasky Studios in 1917 – only to be redirected to lighter duties, given his slight frame. He became a slate boy for Cecil B. DeMille, working his way up through the ranks while nurturing a parallel passion for still photography. He shot his first features as cinematographer in 1923. He was billed simply as James Howe until 1933, when MGM added “Wong” to his screen credit.

Over the decades that followed, Wong redefined the visual grammar of American cinema through his mastery of wide-angle lenses, low-key lighting techniques and his development of the crab dolly. His collaborators included some of the most significant directors in Hollywood history, among them Michael Curtiz, John Frankenheimer, Sidney Lumet and Martin Ritt, with a roster of stars stretching from Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney to Paul Newman, Rock Hudson and Barbra Streisand.

His professional ascent came at considerable personal cost. Wong was unable to obtain U.S. citizenship until the Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed in 1943, despite having lived in the country for nearly four decades. His marriage to novelist Sanora Babb – the couple wed in Paris in 1937 – went legally unrecognized in California until 1948, when the state’s anti-miscegenation law was lifted. Even then, the union could not be publicly acknowledged, as mixed-race marriage ran afoul of the morality clauses in his studio contracts. During World War II, Wong took to wearing a button reading “I am Chinese” to make clear he was not Japanese.

“When I did my research for my PhD thesis, I learnt that there were a number of Chinese filmmakers, including actors/actresses and behind-the-scene filmmakers (Anna May Wong, Esther Eng, etc.), who were so remarkable in Hollywood before and after WWII in the last century. They were the pioneers in the wild west, to fight for representation on screen and off screen, and to showcase their talent,” Yau told Variety. “James Wong Howe was one of them, perhaps the highest achieved one. Maybe it’s also because I worked as a cinematographer for many years as well as a director, I’m particularly interested in his journey and how he navigated Hollywood at that time with his cameras and vision. It’s a story that needs to be told with authenticity.”

“The Cinematographer” was created by Hiu Man Chan, who will serve as executive producer and leads NGO U.K.-China Film Collab. Chan’s credits include the upcoming “My Indian Boyfriend: the Golden Mile” and a Bertrand Russell biopic. The project was selected for the AFM market pitch in 2020 but faced prolonged development setbacks during the pandemic, with casting remaining the central challenge.

“The most difficult part for this project is its casting; the lead actor is crucial for the film. I have been casting for the past few years, but have yet found the right actor to play ‘Jimmie’,” Chan said.

The FilMart meeting with Yau, Chan added, gave the project fresh footing. “Meeting Herman Yau in person during FilMart this month for the first time provided some new grounding to the project. The legendary story left behind by ‘Jimmie’ is so important that I want to do it with justice. Even though it has come a long way, I am thankful to FilMart where new lights were shed in Hong Kong,” Chan said.

The production plans to shoot across multiple locations tracing Wong’s journey from China to Hollywood. Casting and international co-production partners are expected to be revealed in the coming months.

    • The FDA has approved a higher dose version of the GLP-1 drug Wegovy for weight loss.
    • The new dose is 7.2 milligrams per weekly injection, compared to the original 2.4 milligrams per week.
    • A higher Wegovy dose could lead to greater weight loss, but it could come with side effects.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new, higher dose version of the weight loss drug Wegovy on March 19.

This new version, called Wegovy HD, will have a dosage of 7.2 milligrams, administered weekly by injection. Before the higher dose was approved, the weekly shot was 2.4 milligrams.

Novo Nordisk developed the higher dose because, while the 2.4 mg shot has been effective, “some individuals do not reach their therapeutic goals” at that dose, according to a 2025 trial.

“The new FDA is moving with unprecedented efficiency on products that advance national priorities,” said FDA Commissioner Martin Makary, MD, MPH said in a press release. “Today’s approval is another demonstration of what the FDA can accomplish when we try bold new things.”

During the STEP UP phase 3b trial in 2025, the higher 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy gave an average weight loss of 18.7%. Around 1 in 3 participants saw at least a 25% weight loss.

The FDA stated that the higher dose of Wegovy was supported by clinical data showing a safety profile consistent with the known side effects of semaglutide.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Meghan Garcia-Webb, MD, triple board certified in internal medicine, lifestyle medicine, and obesity medicine. Garcia-Webb wasn’t involved in the trial.

“This has already been approved in the E.U. and the U.K. Overall, the safety data showed that serious adverse events were actually a little bit lower for the 7.2 mg group, but as always, we will have to see how this plays out in real clinical practice,” she told Healthline.

The most common side effects of Wegovy include gastrointestinal effects, such as:

    • nausea
    • diarrhea
    • constipation
    • vomiting
    • abdominal pain

Reports of altered skin sensations, such as sensitivity, pain, or burning, occurred more frequently at higher doses of Wegovy.

However, these side effects generally resolve on their own or with a dose reduction.

“Many times patients will have a flare-up of side effects when they increase a dose that subsequently improves over the following weeks to months,” said Garcia-Webb.

Recent research found that there may be a higher risk of ischemic optic neuropathy (ION), or “eye stroke,” with higher doses of Wegovy, especially in males.

ION can cause sudden vision loss or blindness.

This higher risk may be due in part to the higher dose, which leads to greater systemic exposure and faster weight loss. This may affect the blood flow to the optic nerve.

“There’s still a lot of research to be done related to the risk of NAION and semaglutide. It is wise to be especially cautious for patients who would be taking the highest dose,” said Garcia-Webb.

“I always counsel patients to make sure their ophthalmologist is OK with them taking semaglutide if they have any pre-existing eye conditions,” she added.

The FDA’s database relies on voluntary reporting. This means the numbers do not reflect how often the problem actually occurs.

Still, the clear pattern seen with Wegovy and the higher risk in males suggests that doctors should monitor patients carefully, especially those receiving the higher doses for obesity.

  • Anthropic releases safer Claude Code ‘auto mode’ to avoid mass file deletions and other AI snafus

Anthropic has begun previewing “auto mode” inside of Claude Code. The company describes the new feature as a middle path between the app’s default behavior, which sees Claude request approval for every file write and bash command, and the “dangerously-skip-premissions” command some coders use to make the chatbot function more autonomously.

With auto mode enabled, a classifier system guides Claude, giving it permission to carry out actions it deems safe, while redirecting the chatbot to take a different approach when it determines Claude might do something risky. In designing the system, Anthropic’s goal was to reduce the likelihood of Claude carrying out mass file deletions, extracting sensitive data or executing malicious code.

Of course, no system is perfect, and Anthropic warns as such. “The classifier may still allow some risky actions: for example, if user intent is ambiguous, or if Claude doesn’t have enough context about your environment to know an action might create additional risk,” the company writes.

Anthropic doesn’t mention a specific incident as inspiration for auto mode, but the recent 13-hour AWS outage Amazon suffered after one of the company’s AI tools reportedly deleted a hosting environment, was probably front of mind for the company. Amazon blamed that specific incident on human error, saying the staffer involved in the incident had “broader permissions than expected.”

Team plan users can preview auto mode starting today, with the feature set to roll out to Enterprise and API users in the coming days.

  • Stephen Colbert is writing a new Lord of the Rings movie

It’s been quite a while since we visited Middle-Earth on the big screen (anime prequels aside), but it looks like Lord of the Rings fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years. We already knew that Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum was in the works — and by all accounts is progressing nicely — but another Rings-related film is in development too, and it’s being co-written by none other than Stephen Colbert.

The announcement came from Peter Jackson himself, in a video posted by Warner Bros. to coincide with Tolkien Reading Day. The director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy provided a quick update on Serkis’ film (the British actor is both directing and reprising his role as Gollum), before introducing “very special partner” and diehard Tolkien fan Colbert on a video call.

With The Late Show nearing its end, its host was seemingly going to be out of work in the summer. Colbert is working with his son Peter as well as screenwriter Philippa Boyens (who co-wrote the original film trilogy). They’ll adapt some early chapters of Fellowship of the Ring that never made it into Jackson’s 2001 film. The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is actually set 14 years after the events of Return of the King, and will see Sam, Merry and Pippin retrace the first steps of their famous adventure.

So while the new film is inspired specifically by Fellowship chapters III (‘Three is Company’) through VIII (‘Fog On The Barrow-Downs’), it sounds like we’re actually getting a sequel of sorts, in which we’ll also see Sam’s daughter Elanor make a huge discovery that puts her on her own quest.

Colbert and his son had been scribbling away at their idea for several years before plucking up the courage to show what they had come up with to Jackson, but the legendary 64-year-old filmmaker was clearly a fan. And given the timing of the announcement, Colbert will soon be able to commit all of his energy to the project, which has not yet named any cast members. Will Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan be dusting off their hobbit attire? Only time will tell, but the time jump would presumably make it possible.

The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past doesn’t have a release date, but its announcement coincides with the 25th anniversary of Fellowship of the Ring, which has already been marked by the whole trilogy returning to theaters earlier this year.

Bitcoin Exchange Coinbase Announces New Listing! Here Are the Details

US-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is preparing to add a new digital asset to its platform. According to a statement from Coinbase Markets, the exchange’s trading arm, the cryptocurrency called Perle (PRL) will be listed on the spot market starting March 25th.

The announcement emphasized that the launch of PRL token trading would depend on liquidity conditions. Accordingly, if sufficient market depth and trading volume are achieved, the PRL-USD trading pair is planned to be activated later that same day.

The new listing is seen as part of Coinbase’s strategy to increase the variety of assets offered to its users. The exchange typically follows a phased approach to adding new assets, first testing the technical infrastructure and liquidity conditions. This approach aims to limit potential price volatility and support a healthier market formation.

Experts point out that listings on major exchanges can have a significant impact on the price and trading volume of the relevant crypto assets. Listings on platforms with a large global user base, in particular, can increase project visibility and attract new investors.

On the other hand, Coinbase advised users to conduct thorough research on the relevant asset and consider market risks before making a transaction. PRL’s performance will largely depend on market conditions and investor interest.
