Ex-SEC acting chair: Agency dropped crypto cases to avoid issues with credibility

Mark Uyeda, who served as acting chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) before Paul Atkins’s confirmation, said the agency dropped civil cases against cryptocurrency companies filed under the previous administration because it was preparing a “180-degree change” in rulemaking.

In a Wednesday panel at the Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy’s Financial Markets Quality Conference, Uyeda said the SEC dropped cases involving crypto companies in early 2025 as it could have hurt the agency’s credibility in arguing positions in court contrary to its planned policy changes. Uyeda argued that there had been “significant concerns” that the cases against crypto companies were “justifiable under law.”

“I’m not about to have our litigators, even though they’re having cases that were authorized under the prior administration, stand up in court and have a commission interpretation be issued that is a 180-degree change from what they’d been arguing for that court,” said the commissioner. “I think that hurts [our] credibility as an agency.”

Under Uyeda, who was acting SEC chair from January to April 2025, the commission dropped cases filed against Kraken, Ripple Labs, Coinbase and others in what many critics characterized as payback for the industry’s support of President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. Trump had promised to fire former SEC Chair Gary Gensler, under whom many of the cases were filed, “on day one” if elected. Gensler resigned the day Trump took office.

Uyeda has been a commissioner at the SEC since 2022 and currently serves at the agency’s leadership alongside Atkins and Commissioner Hester Peirce. With Peirce’s departure expected in November, the agency will have only two of its five members on its leadership panel, and Trump has not announced any nominations for potential replacements.

  • CNN CEO Mark Thompson Addresses Donald Trump’s White House Ban, Pending Paramount Merger In Town Hall

CNN CEO Mark Thompson Addresses Donald Trump’s White House Ban, Pending Paramount Merger In Town Hall

CNN Worldwide CEO Mark Thompson told employees on Wednesday that the network was fighting “for our fundamental rights as both journalists and citizens” following Donald Trump’s ban on White House access.

CNN, along with Politico and MS NOW, filed suit on Monday, challenging the president’s ban on their access as a violation of the First and Fifth amendments.

Thompson held a town hall for employees on Wednesday morning, and, according to a source familiar with his remarks, told them, “It’s not a fight against the president, it’s not a fight against the White House, it’s fight for our fundamental rights as both journalists and citizens.” He also said that the networks “are fighting on behalf of the American people and in many ways the world in terms of the right to hold any administration or government to account.”

The New York Times first reported on Thompson’s remarks.

A federal judge is holding a hearing on the three outlets’ lawsuit on Wednesday afternoon.

Thompson did not share much about Paramount‘s plans for the network, indicating that the new owner had not revealed what they want to do. He also told employees that he wants to “stay if Paramount finds me useful.” He also warned of assuming that the Paramount takeover meant that it would merge with CBS News.

Thompson joined CNN in 2023, and has embarked on an effort to integrate its linear and digital operations, as well as launch a new streaming option via CNN All Access.

Following a settlement on Monday of a state attorneys general lawsuit challenging the merger of Paramount with Warner Bros. Discovery, the two companies are expected to close the transaction around Oct. 1. A federal judge will hold a hearing on Thursday on a proposed consent decree.

When completed, Paramount will be the fourth parent company to CNN in the past decade.

  • Judge Says He’ll Rule “As Soon As I Can” On Trump’s Ban On CNN, Politico And MS NOW; Expresses Concern Over Due Process

Judge Says He’ll Rule “As Soon As I Can” On Trump’s Ban On CNN, Politico And MS NOW; Expresses Concern Over Due Process

A federal judge said that he will rule “as soon as I can” on whether access should be restored to CNN, Politico and MS NOW after Donald Trump‘s banned them from the White House because of their coverage of him.

The three outlets are seeking a temporary restraining order to immediately lift the ban and return their credentials.

In a 45-minute hearing on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly noted at the outset that he is bound by D.C. circuit precedent that sided with journalists when it comes to White House access, including a 1977 decision in Sherrill vs. Knight and a 2020 decision in Karem vs. Trump, the latter having to do with the revocation of report Brian Karem’s credentials.

Kelly told the attorneys that, based on his reading of documents in the case, the court precedent “wasn’t followed here.”

The judge also noted that he previously presided over a CNN lawsuit against the administration after they revoked the hard pass of its then-chief White House correspondent, Jim Acosta. Kelly ruled that his pass had to be restored because he was not given notice.

The networks sued Trump on Monday, three days after he announced a ban on the outlets access to the White House grounds. The lawsuit claimed violation of the First Amendment and the Fifth Amendment right to due process. The latter issue — that networks were not given an opportunity to challenge the ban before it was implemented or even the reasons for it — dominated much of Kelly’s hearing.

Theodore Boutrous Jr., representing the networks, urged the judge to act quickly on their motion for a TRO or a preliminary injunction.

“These are urgent matters. We’re at war. We have world leaders coming to Washington,” he said, adding that “harm is irreparable. The public interest favors striking down unconstitutional acts like that.”

Michael Velchik, senior counsel at the DOJ’s civil division, representing Trump, argued that notice was given to the networks on Tuesday, citing reporting on national security that they claimed was “publishing sensitive or classified information.” Velchik urged the judge to delay a ruling until Friday, the deadline for the networks to challenge the ban.

But Boutrous dismissed the argument, telling the judge that “all of the sudden it is national security case,” noting that Trump initially cited negative coverage of him. He suggested that the DOJ was making a rationalization after the fact, noting that Trump didn’t even raise the issue of national security until after the networks filed their lawsuit.

Yet even taking the DOJ’s justification into account, Boutrous said, “They are literally arguing reporters shouldn’t scrutinize national security decisions by the government.” He also noted that the Sherrill decision prohibited content-based criteria for issuing press passes.

What’s more, the Tuesday notices to the networks didn’t just argue that the ban was due to national security. The letters to the outlets claimed “behavior in violation of the standards of professionalism and decorum,” while the letter to Politico cited as objectionable a story about Trump’s midterm convention.

Boutrous said that what Trump was objecting to was “very essence of the First Amendment. … the president said, ‘I don’t like what you’re publishing. I’m taking away your press pass based on that.’”

Earlier on Wednesday, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the White House Correspondents’ Association and dozens of news outlets, ranging from the Associated Press to Fox News, urged the judge to issue the temporary restraining order.

  • CamScanner Moves Beyond the App With the Apex 1 Pro

CamScanner Moves Beyond the App With the Apex 1 Pro

Scanning today exists at two ends of the spectrum. You can scan with a large, conventional scanner in an office or at home, or on the go using an app. Both have their strengths, but anyone regularly digitizing bound books or multi-page documents may want something in between. The challenge isn’t just capturing each page—it’s reducing the setup beforehand and the manual cleanup afterward.

CamScanner, a document scanning and management platform, aims to bridge that gap with portable hardware designed to combine the efficiency of a traditional scanner with the convenience of its existing app. The CamScanner Apex 1 Pro, now available on Kickstarter, promises to give scanning an upgrade with features built to handle common frustrations.

Standalone Operation That Plays Well With Others

Powered by an octa-core processor, the Apex 1 Pro handles scanning and AI image correction locally without a connected computer, phone, or internet connection. Files can be saved locally to microSD, allowing users to capture and process documents on site rather than waiting until they return to their desks.

Connectivity and storage options include USB-C, microSD, NFC, and Bluetooth. OCR support for over 50 languages helps turn scanned text into searchable content, while export options include JPG, Word, Excel, TXT, and PDF.

When further work is needed, scans can be transferred directly to a phone through supported connections for editing directly in the CamScanner app.

Making Light Work of Documents on the Go

    CamScanner in action

    (CamScanner)

Don’t be deceived by the small size of the Apex 1 Pro; it’s designed to capture a wide range of documents from long professional contracts to everyday paperwork such as receipts.

Weighing just 1.32lb including its base, it combines a folding body, detachable base, and built-in 2000mAh battery for easy transport and use between client meetings, project sites, and temporary workspaces. No dedicated scanning mat is required, keeping setup simple wherever work takes you.

Easily scan everyday documents in sizes like letter and legal, all the way up to tabloid, with the clarity of a 32-megapixel camera.

Scanning a Book Without Breaking the Spine

Digitizing a book the usual way means pressing capture for every page, then cleaning up the images afterward. The Apex 1 Pro automatically detects page turns and captures each spread. The on-device AI removes fingers and shadows from scanned images, flattens curved pages, and splits facing pages into individual digital pages in the background.

CamScanner says the Apex 1 Pro scans at up to 40 pages per minute. Users turn the pages; the device handles capture and repetitive cleanup without a connected device or internet connection. Books remain intact, with no need to remove the binding.

CamScanner’s Apex 1 Pro is on Kickstarter now at a week-one early bird price of $359, with shipping estimated for Feb 2027.

  • Jean Smart Joins ‘The Family Stone’ Sequel With Original Cast Returning

Jean Smart Joins ‘The Family Stone’ Sequel With Original Cast Returning

Jean Smart is joining the Stone family for the holidays.

On the heels of her fifth Emmy win for her portrayal of Deborah Vance in Hacks earlier this month, Smart has been cast in Searchlight Pictures’ sequel to the 2005 holiday classic The Family Stone, which sees much of the original cast set to return.

Titled The Families Stone, the sequel will see Claire Danes return as Julie Morton, Rachel McAdams as Amy Stone, Dermot Mulroney as Everett Stone, Craig T. Nelson as Kelly Stone, Sarah Jessica Parker as Meredith Morton, Luke Wilson as Ben Stone, Tyrone Giordano as Thad Stone, Elizabeth Reaser as Susannah Stone, Paul Schneider as Brad Stevenson and Brian White as Patrick Thomas.

Thomas Bezucha, who wrote and directed the original film, is also returning to write and direct the sequel. Principal photography is set to begin this fall in New York.

Here’s the official logline for The Families Stone: “Twenty years after their mother’s passing, the Stone family reunites for Christmas only to face the season’s biggest surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family.”

The 2005 film followed Everett (Mulroney), the eldest son of the Stone family, as he brought his uptight girlfriend, Meredith (Parker), home to meet his parents — played by Diane Keaton and Nelson — and siblings — played by Wilson, McAdams, Giordano and Reaser — for Christmas. Everett planned to propose to Meredith, but after she became overwhelmed by the family’s hostile reception, she asked her sister, Julie (Danes), to join her for support, sparking a chaotic holiday visit.

Keaton’s Sybil Stone dies of a terminal illness at the end of the original movie. Keaton died of primary bacterial pneumonia in October 2025 at age 79. “After the death of Diane Keaton, it’ll be even more meaningful because she was so great to be around on the first one,” Wilson said to Entertainment Tonight in July.

The Family Stone grossed $92.9 million worldwide and has since become a holiday staple.

Smart, a veteran actress, has earned numerous accolades over the course of her career, including eight Emmys, three SAG Awards, two Golden Globes and six Critics Choice Awards.

She most recently wrapped the fifth and final season of Hacks. Smart is also known for Babylon, Garden State, Sweet Home Alabama, Mare of Easttown, Watchmen and Fargo. Up next, she will co-star in the romantic comedy Egg Baby from Amazon MGM Studios.

The Families Stone producers include Michael London and Shannon Gaulding for Groundswell Productions, Parker and Alison Benson for Pretty Matches Productions.

Smart is repped by WME and Untitled Entertainment.

  • Boise Cops Solve “The Unknown Wanderer” Cold Case, Say Man May Also Be the Tylenol Murderer

Boise Cops Solve “The Unknown Wanderer” Cold Case, Say Man May Also Be the Tylenol Murderer

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office in Boise, Idaho has finally figured out the real identity of “The Unknown Wanderer,” a man who went by the alias William M. Toomey and died by suicide in a local church in 1982. It’s cool to close any cold case, but this previously unsolved mystery looks like it may crack an even bigger one: Toomey, whose real identity was revealed on Wednesday to be Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski, an organic chemist, may also be the infamous Tylenol Murderer. Enter: Unsolved Mysteries.

Today’s press conference was a joint effort between Ada County Sheriff’s Office and the long-running true crime brand, which is a bit unusual. Unsolved Mysteries was there not for “The Unknown Wanderer” necessarily, but for his potential ties to the Chicago-area poisonings that left at least seven people dead. In 1982, the Tylenol Murderer uncapped bottles of the popular pain medicine at various stores, dumped the powder contents of capsules out, replaced it with cyanide, and returned the bottles to store shelves. (This was before the advent of the safety seal and directly led to its widespread adoption.)

Betkouski’s cause of death was deemed to be cyanide ingestion. Betkouski went through a lot of effort to change his appearance prior to his suicide, and it is believed by some that he made confession in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where his body was discovered. The Tylenol Murders were never solved.

“He was a brilliant man, but he struggled to connect with people in life,” Ada County Sheriff’s Office Det. Tim Cooper said of Betkouski on Wednesday. “Dr. Betkouski had a documented fascination with chemistry and the use of explosives from a young age, and did put others at risk on more than one occasion.”

“In 1974, Dr. Betkouski sustained a traumatic brain injury, which caused some of his problems to manifest in more concerning ways than they had before,” Cooper continued. “In 1975, Dr. Betkouski worked for a flavors and fragrances company in the Jacksonville area, and after about three years, concerns mounted after coworkers reported Dr. Betkouski discussing the perfect crime and how cyanide could be used as a less messy means of taking one’s life.”

It gets worse: Betkouski was fired by Lockhead in 1982 “following an incident at a local pharmacy.” Betkouski “attempted to obtain some type of pills or capsules…for an experiment,” Cooper said.

“Where this leaves us is while our office may have identified some possible connection between Dr. Betkowski and the [Tylenol Murders], we’re not naming him as a suspect, and we cannot say he was in Chicago during the final week of September 1982,” Sullivan said. “More information does exist in this case that we won’t be releasing today.”

All of this and more is covered in documentary Unmasking the Tylenol Killer, which premieres on The Roku Channel on October 9, 2026. Cooper and his work are the stars of the show.

“This case and everything you’ve heard today is going to be the subject of a brand-new Unsolved Mysteries documentary called Unmasking the Tylenol Killer. It streams October 9 on the Roku Channel, and it’s going to go into detail we simply don’t have time for today,” Sheriff Matt Clifford said at the press conference. “Our goal in working with Unsolved Mysteries was simple: we wanted more tips, and we wanted more evidence to come forward.”

It is not on Ada County to name Betkouski as a suspect in the Tylenol Murders as that is a Chicago case. The Idaho police did share all of their findings with the Chicago PD.

If this all sounds familiar, that’s probably because Netflix tried it. In 2025, Joe Berlinger’s Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders attempted to solve the now-44-year-old killing spree. Directors Yotam Guendelman and Ari Pines (well, really it was producer Molly Forster) got the FBI’s lone suspect James Lewis to participate in the three-part series, but it now appears Lewis is probably not their man.

Lewis was never charged in the poisonings, but he was convicted of extortion for sending a letter to Tylenol maker Johnson & Johnson taking responsibility for the deaths and demanding $1 million to stop them. Lewis said later that his letter was an attempt to point authorities to his wife’s former boss. Lewis got a 10-year prison sentence, and died shortly after the three-part Netflix series wrapped.

  • ‘Conclave’ Director Edward Berger, Matthew Libatique to Be Feted at Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival

Oscar-winning Swiss-Austrian director Edward Berger (“Conclave,” “All Quiet on the Western Front”) and American cinematographer Matthew Libatique (“Requiem for a Dream,” “Black Swan”), a triple Oscar nominee, will receive the top honors at the upcoming Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival. The event, which takes place in the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands between Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, will also honor veteran German actress Iris Berben (“Triangle of Sadness”).

Berger will receive the Evolution Vision Award, which recognizes narrative excellence reflecting the mission of building bridges between cultures and people. Libatique will receive the Cinematography Icon Award, recognizing artistic and technical excellence in the art of cinematography, while Berben will be honored with the Evolution Icon Award in homage to a performer whose extensive and brilliant career has achieved international acclaim.

In celebration of Berger, the festival will host a special screening of Cannes Best Director winner “Fatherland,” directed by Paweł Pawlikowski and produced by the “Conclave” director. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Berger and producer Jeanne Tremsal. Earlier this week, it was announced Berger would be reteaming with “The Riders” star Brad Pitt for a long-anticipated “World War Z” sequel.

Berben will receive the inaugural Evolution Icon Award during the festival’s opening gala on Oct. 28. The festival has praised Berben’s work beyond the screen, especially her tenure as the President of the German Film Academy between 2010 and 2019, where she “helped strengthen the public profile and cultural significance of German cinema.”

As for Libatique, Darren Aronofsky’s frequent collaborator will give an Icon Talk followed by a roundtable discussion on cinematography. Libatique is the fifth recipient of the award dedicated to the craft, with the festival also hosting a Cinematography Focus forum between Oct. 28-30. The forum “reinforces one of Evolution’s key professional platforms, dedicated specifically to the craft, technique, and creation of the cinematic image.”

Spanish actor and producer Marc Clotet will preside over this year’s jury. The actor’s return to Mallorca has a special significance, given that he was featured in Benito Zambrano’s “The Sleeping Voice,” the opening film of the festival’s inaugural edition in 2012. “I am delighted to serve as jury president for a festival as special to me as the Evolution Film Festival,” Clotet said. “15 years after attending the first edition, being able to contribute my perspective after all these years of experience is a challenge I approach with great respect and excitement.”

Goya-nominated Clotet has built a career spanning both national and international projects. In 2021, Clotet founded the production company Funicular Films alongside Aina Clotet, Marta Baldó, and Jan Andreu. Through this company, he has spearheaded projects such as the successful series “This Is Not Sweden” and the Cannes Critics’ Week-winning film “Viva,” which played at the major French festival earlier this year.

The festival also revealed more details of its Made in Baleares section, dedicated to bridging together films from the Balearic Islands. This year, the section will feature 32 projects, including 17 short films, seven feature films, five documentary short films and three student short films. The selection reflects the diversity, professional growth, and rising ambition of the Balearic audiovisual sector. It also reinforces Evolution’s commitment to a program that blends local talent with new voices and established figures from international cinema.

The festival’s 15th edition will also see the event expand into the municipality of Calvià, which is celebrating its Year of Cinema in 2026. The festival notes the expansion reinforces “its commitment to the audiovisual sector as a cultural, creative, and economic driver, as well as a tool to showcase the region and attract new productions.”

“Celebrating our fifteenth edition is a momentous occasion for Evolution,” said Sandra Lipski, founder and director of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival. “We are proud to continue building a platform where international voices and local talent converge. Our new collaboration with Calvià reflects a shared ambition: to create meaningful opportunities for filmmakers, promote Mallorca as an exceptional filming location, and contribute to the growth of the island’s audiovisual community.”

The Mayor of Calvià has highlighted the significance of the municipality hosting the festival this year, stating that the “arrival of the Evolution festival represents a renewed commitment to cinema as an audiovisual sector that helps reduce seasonality, while also attracting high-quality tourism.”

The Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival was founded in 2012 to promote Mallorca as a key destination for international film culture. The full program, screening schedules, and upcoming guest announcements will be revealed on Oct. 15.
