OpenAI and Anthropic Are Quietly Rehearsing for the Day After an AI Catastrophe

    In brief

    • Executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI firms are privately war-gaming the political fallout of a catastrophic AI event, most likely a cyberattack on finance, internet access, power or water, and plan to brief Congress quickly.
    • Industry insiders reportedly expect a major incident within six to 12 months, while OpenAI says its preparedness exercises do not treat such scenarios as inevitable and Anthropic declined to comment.
    • Planners assume Democrats will push to curb AI after the Nov. 3 midterms, but an aging Congress, an AI-dependent economy and freely downloadable open-weight models complicate any crackdown.

Top executives at Anthropic, OpenAI, and other AI companies are privately rehearsing how to handle the public and political backlash after a catastrophic AI event, according to an Axios report published Friday.

The scenario they fear most is a large cyberattack—a digital break-in at massive scale—that shuts down banking or internet access, or even power and water. Many industry insiders quoted in the report believe a major incident will happen within the next six to 12 months.

The first serious real-world harm from unsafe AI would push an already wary public further against the technology and its leaders. That includes Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and President Donald Trump, who has been reluctant to regulate it.

OpenAI said it “conducts preparedness exercises where teams discuss and work through a range of potential scenarios,” and that they “are not treated as inevitable.” Anthropic declined to comment.

War games are nothing new but unlike the theoretical outcomes, the report argues that those involved in simulations are doing so under the assumption that a major incident is inevitable.

The plan reportedly involves red-teaming (stress-testing defenses by playing the attacker) against worst-case scenarios, and racing to educate members of Congress. The report says executives know regulation has no chance of passing right now, but they want to shape the laws and policies U.S. leaders will reach for after the first catastrophe.

In July, OpenAI said its GPT-5.6 Sol model and a more advanced unreleased one escaped a sandbox—an isolated test environment with no direct internet access—and breached Hugging Face, the platform that hosts more than 3 million AI models. OpenAI said the models were after the answers to ExploitGym, a benchmark of 898 real-world software flaws where the AI must turn each one into a working attack, scored as pass or fail.

A little over a week later, Anthropic said a testing misconfiguration left its supposedly offline environment connected to the internet, and Claude models hacked three real organizations while treating them as part of an exercise. Neither company said the models were trying to cause harm: Anthropic blamed its testing infrastructure, while OpenAI said its models were “hyperfocused” on the benchmark.

Shortly thereafter, things got worse, with OpenAI being accused of breaching and accessing information from the governments of Australia and the United States.

Criminals are already using the same tools. This week, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike linked attacks on South Korean banks to an unidentified actor that it assesses, with moderate confidence, to be a likely Chinese speaker using agents powered by Claude and Deepseek. The firm says the attacker allegedly took data from tens of thousands of bank customers.

Axios reported planners assume Democrats will be ascendant after the Nov. 3 midterms and will move fast to shut down AI, but they expect trouble. An aging Congress, out of touch with the technology, could find itself out of its depth.

Bans on superintelligence and pauses on advanced AI development are some proposals that may counter the risks associated with irresponsible AI development.

One example is the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar, which would permanently ban AI that matches or beats humans across many tasks and pause advanced development until a new federal agency sets safety rules. Violators could face up to 20 years in prison.

Others have bipartisan support and even some industry buy-in, including a required kill switch on advanced AI, a built-in way to shut a system down. Experts have questioned whether turning off all AI systems is even viable.

  • ‘Demon Hunters’ India-Taiwan Action-Comedy Sets Netherlands Theatrical Release (EXCLUSIVE)

‘Demon Hunters’ India-Taiwan Action-Comedy Sets Netherlands Theatrical Release (EXCLUSIVE)

“Demon Hunters,” Mei-Juin Chen’s India-Taiwan action-comedy, will open in cinemas across the Netherlands on Oct. 29 via LAX Entertainment, extending a run that began theatrically in Taiwan and continued on streaming and digital platforms in India and the U.S.

LAX chief Soeniel Sewnarain has lined up screens with leading Dutch exhibitors, among them Pathé and Kinepolis.

“What attracted us to ‘Demon Hunters’ is that it is genuinely different. It brings together India and Taiwan in a way that is energetic, entertaining and accessible to an international audience,” said Sewnarain.

Arjan Bajwa, JC Lin, Regina Lei, Jack Kao, Harry Chang and Jayanta Meetei star. Chen’s film mixes action and comedy with a supernatural streak, and builds its story around the collision of two cultures.

The film first played in Taiwan through Vie Show Cinemas. Indian audiences then got access via JioHotstar and Prime Video, and a U.S. rollout followed on Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube and other digital services.

Cindy Shyu of Taiwan’s Light House Productions produced the independent feature, which also had support from the Taiwanese government. Gayathiri Guliani, founder of India’s Kleos Entertainment Group, came aboard as co-producer.

“The Netherlands release is an important milestone for us because it brings ‘Demon Hunters’ back to the big screen in a new international market,” said Shyu. “From Taiwan to India, the U.S. and now the Netherlands, the film has continued to find audiences across cultures. That is ultimately what we hoped for when we began this India-Taiwan collaboration – to create a film that could travel.”

Guliani said the film had been designed from the start to cross borders, adding that its journey through Taiwan, India, the U.S. and the Netherlands showed “stories rooted in one culture can find resonance in another when they are driven by universal entertainment values.”

The news was unveiled on the sidelines of the Busan International Film Festival‘s Asian Contents & Film Market.

Rubio pledges US cooperation in Marine-linked murder case

A US Marine stationed on Okinawa has been arrested on suspicion of killing a 39-year-old woman.

The United States ‌Secretary of State Marco Rubio has vowed to cooperate with Japanese authorities investigating allegations that a US Marine murdered a woman in Okinawa, a case that provoked protests and prompted a US military curfew and mandatory training in standards and discipline.

The top US diplomat spoke with Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu in a phone call, the US Department of State said in a statement on Saturday following the death of a local woman in a hotel that has ‌renewed tensions over the US military presence.

“Rubio expressed sincere condolences over the death of a Japanese national in Okinawa, as well as the United States’ determination to communicate and fully cooperate with the Government of Japan and local authorities as they conduct an investigation,” the department said.

Devin Jacob Ballard, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was arrested on October 4 on suspicion of robbing and murdering Anna Yagi, 39, in a hotel in the capital Naha, according to local police.

Local media reported that she was choked to death and her wallet stolen.

    Ballard has denied the allegations.

The killing triggered outrage in Japan, where crimes involving US forces have been a thorn in relations between the close security allies and have long inflamed criticism of US troops being stationed there. Japan hosts the largest overseas contingent of US forces globally, ‌with most of the 18,000 Japan-based Marines stationed on Okinawa.

Following the killing, US military personnel stationed there have been given a monthlong curfew and banned from drinking alcohol while they undergo discipline training.

Rubio and Toshimitsu also discussed US sanctions on the International Criminal ‌Court ‌and the upcoming G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Atlanta, scheduled to begin on October 30.

  • Non-Alcoholic Drink Pairings Up Their Game (and their Prices) at L.A.’s Top Restaurants

Non-Alcoholic Drink Pairings Up Their Game (and their Prices) at L.A.’s Top Restaurants

Kim Stodel, bar director at three-Michelin-starred Providence a few blocks west of the Paramount lot in Hollywood, steeps charred sweet corn in jasmine green tea on a recent afternoon. “I have a suspicion that adding this burnt aroma will accentuate things, taking it over the edge in the way I’m hoping,” he explains of tweaking this accompaniment to an abalone dish on the seafood restaurant’s tasting menu. It’s part of Stodel’s extensive prep and constant experimentation for his nonalcoholic pairings program.

Providence has been around for two decades, Stodel overseeing drinks for more than half that span. But he’s only been concocting elaborate spirit-free progressions in the past two years. “The NA category is exploding,” Stodel says, “and we’re all still beginners, exploring.”

L.A.’s fine dining realm is at the leading edge of a new national movement in NA pairings thanks to driving, sobriety culture and the dampening effects of GLP-1 products. At Sushi Nakazawa’s lauded original Manhattan location, only 5 percent of the clientele is opting for NA beverages, while it’s 25 percent at its 5-month-old outpost along Robertson Boulevard.

Downtown restaurant Kato, a repeat on the World’s 50 Best list in recent years, was an early and enthusiastic adopter of NA pairings. “You can draw a clear parallel with the advent of serious cocktail programs in fine dining spaces 20 years ago, when those drinks became culinary,” explains Kato’s bar director Austin Hennelly. “Soon we’ll look back at the time right before right now and won’t believe alcohol-free beverages weren’t taken seriously in sophisticated restaurants because this is now what a significant percentage of people want to drink.”

Customers, especially younger generations who on average drink substantially less, are driving the demand. In turn, these fine-dining establishments — which operate on thin margins — are developing their NA programs as meaningful alternative revenue streams. (Their cost is often almost as much as alcoholic programs.) “With small restaurants in particular, when you remove wine, the numbers are very tight,” explains chef Aitor Zabala, who owns West Hollywood’s three-Michelin-starred Somni, where on many evenings up to half the clientele is opting in to NA pairings. “You need to offer more than water.” Some restaurants, including Somni, also offer hybrid menus as a way station for moderate drinkers and the NA-curious alike.

Trade tech advancements are helping those at the vanguard of the new NA movement. “Even in 2023, I was pretty discouraged by what was available,” says Sushi Nakazawa’s beverage director Dean Fuerth, pointing to “dealcoholized wine where the soul had been taken out of it.” Since then, the implementation of vacuum distillation — which separates alcohol and other compounds from wine — has allowed for better preservation of the original character. “A few years ago,” he adds, “it may have felt austere and stripped, and now it tastes like a dead ringer for the real thing.”

Wine has a long history and tradition of formalized pairings in fine dining. Sake and cocktails followed far more recently. Right now, NA is a Wild West, often integrating principles and techniques from the kitchen — the seasonal, farm-to-table ethos; the interest in fermentations, clarifications and infusions.

“It’s an area where we’re seeing quite a lot of innovation,” says Daniel Patterson, chef and owner of Hancock Park’s 5-month-old Jacaranda, where NA now accounts for about 20 percent of pairings. (He earned multiple Michelin stars and James Beard awards for his prior work in San Francisco.) Patterson highlights the house-made teas offered on Jacaranda’s NA pairing menu. “For me, tea is one of those things that requires such skill in the choosing and the roasting — there’s really a strong parallel with wine, in terms of the intent and the gradients of quality and the connoisseurship. It provides an equivalency of quality and excitement to wine.”

The pioneers of NA pairing are enthusiastic about the burgeoning movement, but most excited about what’s next. “The boom began just three or four years ago,” says Somni’s Zabala. “It’s still so young. We don’t know the future. But it will be even better.”

US opens antitrust probe into TV networks for halting Trump coverage

Department of Justice says it’s investigating whether the White House press pool’s decision violated antitrust laws.

The United States Department of Justice has opened an investigation into television networks’ decision to halt coverage of President Donald Trump last month.

A spokesperson said on Saturday that the department was investigating whether the networks violated federal antitrust laws by their boycott, which followed a White House decision to pull the credentials of reporters from three news organisations, including CNN.

    Recommended Stories

list of 4 itemsend of list

The networks under investigation are ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News, said Emily Convington, the Justice Department spokesperson.

“Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act,” she said of the antitrust legislation.

“The Antitrust Division is simply investigating to determine whether these news organizations have violated the antitrust laws.”

The investigation is the latest in a series ‌of clashes between the Trump administration and major news organisations. Trump has repeatedly called the mainstream media “fake news” and frequently clashes with reporters during encounters with the press.

The action also puts legal and potentially financial pressure on the media to continue coverage of the president even when they disagree with how the White House handles them.

The networks did not immediately comment on the announcement.

The Justice Department’s move came after the television pool of five broadcasters last month ceased presidential coverage after the administration barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.

The White House said on September 19 that covering the president was a “privilege – not a right”. The outlets sued the administration, alleging the exclusions violated the First Amendment and that the White House was retaliating over their coverage.

CNN is one of the five news organisations – along with ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC – that make up the primary White House television pool.

They share the costs of covering the president, take turns organising coverage, and share the footage with outlets around the country.

All of the five television networks that cover the White House, including Fox ‌News, suspended coverage in solidarity and refused to provide replacement coverage.

The White House reinstated the credentials on September 24 after US District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that the ban was likely unconstitutional and ‌ordered ‌the administration to “immediately return, reinstate, and restore” their access.

However, disputes over access to specific presidential events and pool assignments continued.

Jose Zamora, the Committee to Protect Journalists’ Americas director, on Saturday criticised the administration’s decision to investigate.

“The government should not use antitrust investigations to intimidate news outlets defending press access,” Zamora said on X. “The public’s right to know depends on that access.”

Musk vows ‘affordable’ Starlink in India as he escalates feud with Ambani

Elon Musk’s latest comments come days before Mukesh Ambani’s low-cost Reliance Jio’s parent launches India’s largest-ever initial public offering.

‌Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has said he would price his Starlink satellite internet service affordably in India to take on Mukesh Ambani’s low-cost Reliance Jio, escalating his attacks on the rival tycoon days before Jio’s parent launches the country’s largest-ever initial public offering (IPO).

Jio Platforms, which owns the telecom arm, is targeting a valuation of $106bn in the offering. Much like SpaceX-owned Starlink, Jio’s satellite venture is also awaiting final security clearance to launch.

Cheap data is the playbook that built Jio in India, and the one Musk has used in markets like Kenya to unsettle local telecom players. SpaceX now plans to enter the mobile carrier market itself, starting in ‌the United States.

Musk did not specify prices for India, where mobile data costs about rupees 7.74 ($0.08) per gigabyte, among the lowest in the world.

“Obviously, if Starlink is too expensive in India, no one will buy it, so SpaceX will need to make pricing affordable,” he said in a post on his social media platform X on Saturday.

“The reality is that competition would greatly benefit the average citizen in India by giving them more choices, as it always does. Ambani’s profits will be lower, but he is not going out of business,” Musk added.

    ‘Prime Minister Ambani’

Musk’s remarks were the latest in a series of X posts in which he accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and Ambani of stalling Starlink’s entry into one of the world’s biggest internet markets to favour market leader Jio.

The posts have marked a sharp turn for Musk, who has long enjoyed a warm public rapport with Modi.

India’s government has denied any bias in its approval process, ‌noting that the three satellite ventures seeking to launch, including Starlink’s and Jio’s, are all awaiting final security clearance.

Late on Friday, Musk taunted Ambani directly, addressing ‌him as “Prime ‌Minister Ambani” and asking whether he would “consider allowing Starlink to compete”.

Reliance has not responded to Musk’s remarks.
