Egypt’s railway authority has said a train traveling from Giza to Fayoum crashed into the back of another service, which was heading south from Cairo to the city of Aswan.
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said he was following the incident and expressed ‘sincere condolences’ to the families of those involved, as well as injured passengers.
In a statement on social media he wrote: “I am following with great interest the repercussions of the train accident and I express my sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and my best wishes for the recovery of the injured.
“The state authorities have directed to provide the necessary medical care, and to expedite the investigation into the circumstances of the accident, and to hold accountable anyone who proves their negligence.”
The health ministry said 72 ambulances were deployed to the scene of the train collision and that 88 people were rushed to hospital.
Authorities said they have now launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, which occurred in Giza’s Al-Ayyat area.
This was also the site of Egypt’s worst-ever rail disaster in 2002, when more than 370 people were killed when a fire swept through a train carrying passengers south of Cairo.
