MetaMask introduces limit orders for token swaps

That opens the door to familiar strategies. The research describes take-profit orders, where a trader locks in gains if a token climbs to a set level. It also describes below-market buy orders, for anyone hoping to pick up a token on a dip without staring at a chart all afternoon.

Open orders can be tracked and managed directly inside the app. Users don’t need to bounce between a wallet and a separate trading dashboard to see what’s pending.

The feature requires MetaMask Mobile version 8.18.0 or later. At launch, it covers four networks:

  • Ethereum
  • Base
  • BNB Smart Chain
  • Robinhood Chain

The self-custody twist

Limit orders are standard fare on centralized exchanges. The catch there is that you hand your assets to the exchange first, and it holds them while your order waits.

MetaMask is trying to skip that step. The feature relies on revocable ERC-7702 delegation to execute orders conditionally. The user grants a narrow, conditional permission rather than handing over the tokens. The assets stay in the user’s own wallet until the order actually fills, and the permission can be pulled back.

According to the research findings, this is the first limit order feature of its kind integrated into a self-custodial wallet.

Fees, gas, and who pays when

Execution is gasless from the user’s perspective. Instead of requiring users to hold a separate balance of a network’s native token for gas, transaction fees are deducted from the tokens being sold.

MetaMask’s own service fee is only charged when an order is fulfilled. An order that never hits its target price costs nothing in service fees.

Background: from swaps to a trading toolkit

MetaMask first launched its Swaps feature in 2020. It worked as an aggregator, pulling quotes from multiple sources so users could trade tokens without leaving the wallet.

Since then, the company has steadily layered on more advanced tools. The research points to perpetual trading enhancements and rewards programs as part of that expansion.

Limit orders slot into the same Swap aggregator. MetaMask’s user base reportedly surpassed 100 million in early 2026, which gives any new feature a substantial pool of potential adopters on day one.
