  • Man who spent 40 days in cave without concept of time breaks down the astonishing effects on his body

Man who spent 40 days in cave without concept of time breaks down the astonishing effects on his body

A man who spent 40 days underground as part of an experiment on how removing the perception of time impacts people spoke of feeling ‘liberation’ during the experiment.

Christian Clot led a group of volunteers spent 40 long days inside a cave in the south of France as part of an science experiment called ‘DeepTime’ which charted how it impacted people when you remove the usual ways that we chart the passage of time.

“During the first week in the cave, it was really hard to accept the idea that when I wake up, I didn’t have to check my smartphone or my watch to see if I slept enough. I just have to listen to my body,” Clot said.

“It was like a liberation, you know. It was like: Wow, amazing. I just have to listen to me!”

When we say removing the passage of time, we don’t just mean taking away people’s watches and phones – the experiment very deliberately put them in a place that would take things much further.

Our bodies have a natural rhythm for when to sleep and wake, based on things like sunlight which gives us an idea of what stage of the day it is, but here even this factor was removed by isolating the group in the cave.

That meant that the people in the cave were entirely removed from any external sense of the time, whether it was artificial or natural, meaning that people had only their intuition or general ‘sense’ of time.

During their underground stay volunteers could take scientific observations, with the cave being mostly dark except for one living area which was lit up.

The volunteers were instructed to simply eat and sleep when they felt like they needed to, while it was ‘absolutely forbidden to wake up someone else’ so people just woke up when they woke up.

Fascinatingly, the experiment found that there was a lot of individual variation among the people who participated.

Clot told Insider that after the 40 days underground most of the people involved had completed just 40 ‘cycles’ of what we might think of as a day, indicating that they ended up on a time frame of 30 hours instead of 24.

The experiment also removed daylight as a factor in regulating participants' sleep cycles (Getty Stock)

One person on the study had an even longer cycle, sleeping 23 times over the course of the 40 day experiment.

Things also changed over the course of the experiment as well as people began to readjust to the strange new environment in which they found themselves.

At first, Clot said that people were entirely out of sync with one another as they were still tied to how they would sleep and wake up in their everyday lives.

“People were awake around the clock,” said Clot.

But he noticed that as the days, such as they were, continued to pass on people began to fall into a strange synchronicity.

“In an unconscious way, when people wanted to be together, they woke up at the same time,” said Clot.

It just goes to show how forces that we think of as all-encompassing are in fact a lot more malleable than we might expect.

  • MI5 Chief warns of growing terror AI threat as right-wing extremism reaches children as young as 13

MI5 Chief warns of growing terror AI threat as right-wing extremism reaches children as young as 13

Extreme right-wing terrorism is continuing to infiltrate younger people in the UK who are being taken down ‘dark paths’ of the internet, the Director General of MI5 has said.

In his annual update on current threats to the UK, Sir Ken McCallum said that just months ago, MI5 was investigating a radicalised extreme right-wing 13-year-old in the UK.

During his speech to select media at Thames House, the headquarters of the UK’s domestic intelligence agency, today (13 October), Sir Ken said of the investigation: “Believe me, we wish we didn’t have to. But that investigation generated insight that enabled one of our international partners to prevent a lethal attack on their soil.”

He added: “We will continue to work tirelessly to detect and get ahead of such volatile threats. But no system can catch them all.”

Currently, the terror threat in the UK remains high, with the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) having increased the UK terrorism threat to severe, which means an attack in the UK is ‘highly likely’, for the first time in almost five years.

On advice to parents, he said (if) ‘you’re worried your teenager is being taken down some dark paths on the internet, have a word with a teacher, healthcare professional or someone you trust in your community’.

‘The benefits of AI are real, but so are the national security threats’

Sir Ken also announced the launch of an AI Threat Assessment Centre – to be known as AITAC – in the UK, which will be housed in MI5 and bring together expertise from various bodies to inform Government and produce assessments.

He said Artificial Intelligence (AI) was ‘supercharging the cybersecurity contest between attackers and defenders’, given it can produce ‘propaganda’ and also ‘radicalise material tailored to the individual’.

“We’ve caught terrorists seeking to exploit AI to improve their reconnaissance and attack methodologies, with AI-enabled drones adding a new twist,” he said.

He added: “Not yet realised – but the misuse case to which I’d attach the greatest weight – is AI’s potential to change the stakes on existing or even new bioweapons.”

Earlier in the week, Britain’s AI minister Kanishka Narayan warned that a breach of the UK’s cyber defences was ‘likely, if not inevitable’.

Over the last few months, experts have also warned that AI could wipe out humanity within the near future if the technology race is allowed to go on unchecked.

‘We were all horrified by the murder of Ann Widdecombe in July’

Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe died aged 78 after being hit over the head with a hammer 21 times at her home in Devon in July.

The man accused of murdering her, Joshua Kerry, 28, has also been charged with a terror plot against Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.

Speaking about societal resilience, Sir Ken said that ‘sadly, the case is part of a concerning trend of violence targeted at political figures, religious or community groups and more’.

On Monday, 12 October, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced an independent review of the UK’s protective security system.

  • Man killed by tiger in Yorkshire Wildlife Park after jumping into enclosure has been named

Man killed by tiger in Yorkshire Wildlife Park after jumping into enclosure has been named

The man who sustained fatal injuries after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has now been identified.

William Chapman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday (10 October) shortly after his horror encounter with the animal at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Chaos erupted at the attraction in Doncaster last weekend as stunned visitors watched the deadly incident unfold in front of them, before staff promptly evacuated the park.

The victim’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, South Yorkshire Police confirmed.

A major investigation update was also issued on Monday (12 October) with new details emerging about the next steps in enquiries following the fatal incident.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park said its 'thoughts and heartfelt sympathies remain with the victim's family' (SWNS)

Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports that a man had entered the ‘Land of the Tigers’ enclosure shortly after 1.30pm on Saturday.

Police have urged people not to share the ‘distressing footage’ of the brutal attack that has been circulating on social media.

One onlooker told The Mail on Sunday they had seen Chapman ‘dancing’ with his earphones in and claimed he even ‘asked a total stranger to take a picture of him with the tiger in the background’ moments before entering the enclosure.

The park was closed as emergency crews raced to the scene on Saturday afternoon and cleared the area. South Yorkshire Police meanwhile confirmed to LADbible on Monday that the man was believed to have been visiting the park alone.

Eyewitnesses had also shared their accounts of what happened at the park, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

One woman, who was visiting the animal park with her friends and their young children, told LADbible they saw ‘staff running around’ frantically shortly after shots rang out.

The zookeepers who were present have been praised for springing into action and ‘doing everything they could’ after the man entered the tiger enclosure.

It has been reported that they fired several gunshots in the air in a bid to distract the big cat, causing it to subsequently flee and hide nearby.

What will happen to the tiger?

On Sunday (11 October), Yorkshire Wildlife Park told LADbible in a statement that the park is currently closed in wake of the ‘tragic incident’.

It also confirmed the fate of the Amur tiger involved, Altai, after ‘many, many people’ contacted the park out of concern that it may be euthanised.

The statement said: “Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the man who tragically lost his life.

“The park will be closed today and the staff team who were deeply affected by events will receive specialist support.

“Many, many people have contacted us about Altai, the tiger. We can reassure everyone that he is safe and well and will not be euthanised as a result of this incident.”

South Yorkshire Police also confirmed that the tiger was ‘uninjured and remained in the enclosure’ in wake of the attack by the City of Doncaster Council. The park remains closed for the foreseeable.

The Land of the Tigers attraction made its debut in 2011, two years after Yorkshire Wildlife Park first opened its doors.

It is on a purpose-built two-acre reserve, so the animals can ‘freely roam their woodlands and grasslands or play in their very own waterfall pool’, its website explains.

It is home to Amur tigers, which are an endangered subspecies. There are only around 500 are left in the wild.

    Latest update on investigation

It has now been confirmed that a health and safety investigation has been launched into the death.

This was confirmed by the licensing authority the City of Doncaster Council said.

Dan Swaine, Executive Director of Place at City of Doncaster Council, said: “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred this weekend.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with everyone involved, including the family and loved ones of the person who tragically lost their life, those that witnessed the incident and the staff involved at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, as well as the emergency services who provided a swift response.

“As the relevant licensing authority for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, I can confirm that, in line with our statutory duties, the council has launched a health and safety investigation.

“We are also working with multiple agencies, including the police and health agencies, and are supporting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in response to the incident.

“At this time, we won’t be commenting further on the individual or the investigation and we ask that the privacy of those involved is respected at this difficult time.”

  • Billionaire Michael Dell hits back after trolls mock wife Susan’s appearance at White House

Billionaire Michael Dell hits back after trolls mock wife Susan’s appearance at White House

Dell founder Michael Dell appears to have taken a swipe at internet trolls who attacked his wife Susan’s looks after a recent White House appearance.

Susan, 62, went viral after she appeared alongside her billionaire husband – the CEO and chairman of tech company Dell Technologies – in the Oval Office on 7 October.

In a clip shared online, President Donald Trump can be seen talking while Susan stands behind him in a red dress.

The pair were in attendance after they contributed $6.25 billion to ‘help 25 million children start building a strong financial foundation’.

Commenting on the scheme, Susan said: “Over the past month, as our contribution reached millions of children’s accounts, Michael and I have heard from so many parents and kids and grandparents with these beautiful letters that have truly moved us.

“Children have told us that they want to become entrepreneurs… nurses, doctors, engineers. They want to build their own companies some day.”

“We’ve heard from parents and grandparents who share what it means to them.

“To know that there is an investment in their child’s future. These things are so wonderful and so important. It’s not just the money that matters… Knowing someone believes in you and your future that matters just as much.”

However, their philanthropic deed was overlooked after cruel trolls took aim at Susan’s appearance online, where the clip was branded ‘one of the weirdest things’ and ‘not real’.

In response her husband Michael has since shared posts from several people who have called out the cruel comments and urged people to leave Susan alone.

One post shared by Michael on his X account read: “My grandson got 250 dollars in his Trump account from Susan Dell. Please leave that woman alone.”

Michael also reposted another tweet that had been written in response to a post condemning the criticism of Susan, that read: “It’s truly insane how evil and full of themselves people are. I signed my kids up and wasn’t expecting to get anything as we live in a wealthy county and city. Out of the blue $250 showed up from Dell for both of my boys. I will go out of my way to support them now, who else has done what they did? No one…”

Michael has since shared a series of sweet letters, drawings and cards sent to he and his wife by children thanking them for their donation.

Eric Trump has also hit back

Donald Trump’s son Eric has also hit out at the ‘vicious attacks’ on Susan’s appearance.

In a post on X, he wrote: “People are awful. Susan and Michael Dell just put $6.25 billion into Trump Accounts for 25 million kids so they’ll have something waiting for them when they grow up—one of, if not the largest private donation in American History.

“The response? Vicious attacks on her.

“I’m tired of this nonsense. Very few people have done more for philanthropy. It’s disgusting and it has to stop.

“Susan, on behalf of the overwhelming majority of people in this nation: Thank You!! You are incredible!”

  • Selma Blair faces potential prison sentence as she’s released on $20K bail after alleged inflight assault

Selma Blair faces potential prison sentence as she’s released on $20K bail after alleged inflight assault

Selma Blair has been arraigned on two counts of assault following an incident onboard a Delta Airlines flight.

The 54-year-old star was arrested and taken to hospital on Sunday (11 October) night after she allegedly injured two flight attendants on a plane from Los Angeles to New York.

The Cruel Intentions star was detained by police at around 11pm after the Delta Air Lines jet parked at the gate at John F Kennedy International Airport, according to a statement from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The Port Authority said that a flight attendant was also taken to hospital.

Blair has now attended a court appearance in Queens, where she was arraigned on two counts of second-degree assault.

The judge set her bail at $20,000 (£15,141) cash or $60,000 dollars (£45,425) bond and set the next hearing for 19 January 2027.

Images from the arraignment obtained by Page Six show the actress becoming tearful in court.

Blair was represented in court by Shawn Barnes and Joshua Reitzas.

Barnes told Judge Indira Khan that Blair had missed her medication, which is used to treat her multiple sclerosis, and had also fallen and hit her head.

He also said his client had been working ‘extensive hours and exhaustive hours’ prior to the flight.

“These factors coupled with the altitude, resulted in a state of severe confusion and disorientation,” Barnes said, according to Page Six.

“This was not an intentional assault,” he continued.

Reitzas, who could be seen wiping away Blair’s tears, highlighted Blair’s body of work to the judge.

The judge replied: “Ms. Blair should not get special treatment because she is a celebrity.”

According to New York sentencing guidelines, Blair could face up to seven years in jail if she’s convicted.

A representative for Blair previously told The Associated Press that the actor had a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct.

The statement read: “Selma experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct.

“Upon landing, she received immediate medical attention and is currently in stable condition.”

When contacted by LADbible, a rep said they had ‘no comment at this time’.

The FBI has also issued Blair a notice charging her with assault, according to a federal law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

In a statement shared with the Daily Mail, an FBI spokesperson said: “The FBI is responsible for investigating all assaults aboard aircraft.

“Yesterday, we were informed by our partners at Port Authority Police Department of a potential assault aboard a flight that arrived into JFK. As per long-standing DOJ policy, we do not comment on ongoing investigations.”

It’s not the first time Blair has had issues aboard a plane.

In 2016, the actress apologised for making statements she later regretted during a flight from Cancun to Los Angeles.

She said she had mixed alcohol with medication, causing her to black out.

“I made a big mistake yesterday. After a lovely trip with my son and his Dad, I mixed alcohol with medication, and that caused me to black out and led me to say and do things that I deeply regret,’ she said in a statement to Vanity Fair at the time.

“My son was with his Dad asleep with his headphones on, so there is that saving grace. I take this very seriously, and I apologise to all of the passengers and crew that I disturbed and am thankful to all of the people who helped me in the aftermath.

“I am a flawed human being who makes mistakes and am filled with shame over this incident. I am truly very sorry.”

Blair has had a lengthy career with roles in films including Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde and Hellboy.

In recent years, she has advocated for disability rights and she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018.

  • Professor accused of soaking student’s backpack in urine admits to disturbing habit

Professor accused of soaking student’s backpack in urine admits to disturbing habit

A US college professor is facing a felony charge after being accused of soaking a student’s back in pee.

Science professor Paul Fischer, 55, is accused of causing more than $2,000 worth of damage after soaking the backpack in his own urine, court documents show.

Fischer, who taught at Macalester College in Minnesota for more than 25 years, has been charged with one count of first-degree damage to property.

If he is convicted, Fischer could be given up to five-years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.

In the complaint, which was filed at the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office last week, the student said she left her backpack unattended at Macalester’s science block for around five minutes or so on 5 December 2025.

But when she returned she noticed the bag was damp and was horrified to discover what she believed to be ‘urine on her backpack’.

The unnamed student told cops that she believed the professor was the culprit as she’d been near his office and he was the only other person in the area at the time.

The student claimed that the incident resulted in her belongings being damaged and provided receipts totalling around $2,070 for the items that were ruined.

Following the complaint from the student, officers from St Paul police contacted the Macalester College Department of Public Safety and was told that ‘an investigation had been conducted, and it was discovered that an individual had been caught urinating around campus and that the individual resigned pending the investigation’.

The individual was identified as Fischer, the complaint said.

The Macalester College Department of Public Safety claimed that between 11 November and 5 December, there had been six reports of urination happening at the campus’ Olin-Rice Science Center and ‘included urine located in trash cans, individuals’ water bottles, and inside other professors’ decorations’, TwinCities reports.

Speaking to police, Fischer reportedly admitted that he had ‘developed a habit’ of ‘urinating in a cup’ and then disposing of the waste around the college’s campus in rubbish bins or lab sinks.

He said that on 5 December, he was emptying one such container of urine into a bin near his office, which was situated near the desk the student had been using.

Fischer told police that he believed the cup of urine may have spilled onto her belongings.

In a statement shared with CBS News, a spokesperson for Macalester College said: “Macalester College is aware of the criminal charge against Paul Fischer.

“Fischer’s employment with Macalester ended during the 2025–26 academic year.”

Fischer is due to attend a court appearance over the matter early next month.

  • Woman, 23, facing death by firing squad ‘suffering terribly’ in horrific conditions in Dubai jail

Woman, 23, facing death by firing squad ‘suffering terribly’ in horrific conditions in Dubai jail

A 23-year-old influencer charged with murder and held in a notorious Dubai detention centre has been banned from calling home, her concerned family has claimed.

Brooke George, who hails from Kent, could be executed by a firing squad if she is convicted of murdering a man she met online, William Treeby, 26, in June this year.

She claims that she acted in self-defence after he allegedly attacked her – and since being arrested at the airport while trying to flee back to the UK, she has been locked up at an infamous detention centre.

According to advocacy group Detained in Dubai, George’s loved ones have expressed serious concerns about the conditions she is being kept in at the notorious Bur Dubai police detention centre.

The content creator – known for sharing beauty routines and lip-syncing videos on social media – is said to be sleep-deprived and has now reportedly been forbidden from making international phone calls.

The Brit has been charged with the murder of 26-year-old William Treeby (Detained in Dubai)

The Brit has been charged with the murder of 26-year-old William Treeby (Detained in Dubai)

During the very brief communication she has had recently with her mother Tess, George complained that bright lights remain on in every room around the clock, leaving her unable to sleep.

The mum has said she is becoming increasingly ‘worried about her mental state‘ after George’s trial was adjourned until 28 October last week, meaning she will have to endure at least another few weeks at the detention centre.

Detained in Dubai said that the facility was ‘never designed for long-term habitation’ in its latest update on George’s case, adding: “British citizens who were locked up there for only hours during the Iran strikes were terrified at the thought of spending days there, let alone months.”

The latest update on George’s trial

George was arrested at Dubai International Airport in June and taken into custody and charged with murder after Treeby was fatally stabbed.

This is a crime that can carry the death penalty in the UAE – meaning she could be executed by a firing squad.

The young woman met Treeby online, according to reports, before the pair developed a relationship which led to her flying out to Dubai to meet him.

But on her second visit to the holiday hotspot, she claims Treeby became controlling and exhibited abusive behaviour.

After an argument between them allegedly turned violent, George reached for a kitchen knife in what she claims was an act of self-defence.

Her latest court hearing took place last Wednesday (8 October), but Detained in Dubai said that prosecution witnesses who had been summoned to attend did not turn up. As a result, her trial was adjourned until 28 October.

George's family are becoming increasingly 'worried about her mental state' (Detained in Dubai)

George’s family are becoming increasingly ‘worried about her mental state’ (Detained in Dubai)

The court ordered her continued detention while it awaits evidence from the remaining witnesses.

George’s prolonged stay at the Bur Dubai police detention centre has taken a significant toll on her mental state, according to her relatives.

Her mother Tess told Detained in Dubai that as well as the lights remaining on constantly, the cries of babies and children nearby also make it difficult to sleep.

George was reportedly told she would receive medication to aid her sleep, but campaigners say she has still not been given any – while her contact with the outside world is allegedly being restricted.

“She can’t sleep,” Tess said. “She can barely call home. I’m getting very worried about her mental state.”

Tess alleges that the recent calls she had with her daughter were ‘cut off after approximately two minutes’ and that the 23-year-old ‘has now been told she cannot make international calls’.

Brit, 23, is ‘suffering terribly’ behind bars

The founder of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, said that George is ‘suffering terribly’ at the detention centre and is becoming ‘increasingly upset’.

“Her mother is left wondering how much worse things will become before she hears her daughter’s voice again,” she explained. “Two minutes on the telephone, followed by an abrupt disconnection, is distressing for everyone involved.

“For Brooke, those calls are a lifeline. For her family, they are the only opportunity to hear how she is coping and offer some reassurance.”

Amid the delay in George’s trial, Stirling has called for the concerns around the Brit’s wellbeing to be ‘addressed now’, adding: “Her health cannot be put on hold until the next court hearing.”

The campaign group said it is working to secure her access to medical care, sleep medication where clinically appropriate, and reliable telephone contact with her family.

“We will do everything we can to help,” Stirling said. “Brooke needs to know she has not been forgotten. Her family needs to be able to speak to her, and her worsening distress needs proper medical attention.

“Whatever the allegations, she is entitled to humane treatment while her case is heard.”

  • Teen who refused to go to college now earns over £750,000 a year and works with celebrity investors

Teen who refused to go to college now earns over £750,000 a year and works with celebrity investors

For most teenagers, the most important thing in their lives is hanging out with friends and surviving school.

But for budding entrepreneur Harrison Nott, his goals have always been in the world of business.

After completing his GCSEs, the 16-year-old decided against going to college to pursue his business dreams full time.

A pretty bold move for a teenager to make – until you factor in that Nott is the owner of CoolTowel, a business backed by Rio Ferdinand.

“It just changed my whole life.”

Nott originally came up with the idea at the age of 13, after scouring the market to find a cooling towel and coming up short.

Spotting a gap in the market, Nott came up with CoolTowel, a specially engineered towel which is designed to evaporate heat alongside moisture.

CoolTowel has made £750,000 in revenue this year (SWNS)

CoolTowel has made £750,000 in revenue this year (SWNS)

Which is certainly something that would’ve been handy to have during the many heatwaves of 2026.

After coming up with the idea, Nott was able to secure funding after winning the Alibaba.com CoCreate Pitch competition earlier this year, beating 15,000 entrepreneurs from across the globe and taking home £150,000.

The cash wasn’t the only prize which Nott walked away with, as his invention had also caught the eye of footy ace Ferdinand.

“At that moment it was a bit of a blur. I couldn’t believe Rio Ferdinand had taken my number,” Nott recalled.

“This was during my GCSEs, so it was a lot of emotions at once. I was a bit overwhelmed really. I was very excited and optimistic for how he could help.

“Having that name backing the business is quite a significant thing so it was a no-brainer when he offered to spend his time on it.”

Nott now sells his towels through online retailers such as TikTok Shop and Shopify, securing 80,000 sales so far this year.

“He truly wants to support me more than just to make money from the business," Harrison said of his celebrity backer. "He is helping loads of young people." (SWNS)

“He truly wants to support me more than just to make money from the business,” Harrison said of his celebrity backer. “He is helping loads of young people.” (SWNS)

He was also flown out to Los Angeles to pitch his creation, mingling with the likes of James Corden and former Manchester United star Javier Hernández, which certainly sounds better than studying for your A levels.

The success of the business also saw Nott decide against pursuing further education, deciding instead to dedicate himself full-time to a business which has generated revenue of over £750,000.

“It is strange,” Nott said of the decision. “All of my friends are going to college and seeing each other, and I am on a different path, which was a bit sad, but it was a sacrifice that had to be made.”

Growing the business hasn’t been without its issues either, as Nott has faced a number of issues when it came to scaling his business. After selling out of all of his stock in just two days, Nott decided to open a pre-order system, but closed it down as cancelled pre-orders could threaten the business.

There were also issues with the pre-orders on TikTok Shop, which stopped them from selling for a couple of months.

Despite some setbacks, Harrison is determined to make the brand a success (SWNS)

Nott was also targeted by scammers who copied his ideas, with one brand even getting 20,000 orders off the back of his idea.

He has yet to see a profit from the business, with advertising campaigns and affiliate commissions also eating into the £750,000.

Despite the setbacks, Nott is positive that he’ll soon be able to turn a profit from the business.

“The future is looking a bit brighter. We have got big plans,” he added. “It is not just a business in my bedroom anymore, it is a brand that is helping people properly.

“It isn’t physical cash in bank yet, but I have got a lot of stock and assets. If we keep going, we should break even.”

Difference between vape smoke and cigarette smoke as doctor explains which is worse

Experts have highlighted the difference between smoking tobacco and vaping as a doctor explains which one is worse.

The health risks associated with smoking have been well documented by decades’ worth of medical studies, linking smoking tobacco to cancer, heart disease, as well as a whole host of other health conditions and heightened risks.

Vaping is growing in popularity as a habit in its own right, and while there is still a need for further study on its precise health impacts some evidence already points to the habit coming with health risks.

Dr Rayyan Zafar explained that while both smoking and vaping are bad for you, smoking tobacco is still much worse, whether it’s cigarettes, cigars, or if you somehow manage to sustain smoking a pipe in 2026.

NHS guidance suggests that vaping can be useful as a way for someone who already smokes tobacco to reduce the harm done to them as a result, but if you do not already smoke then the advice is to not take up vaping as while it has not been shown to be as harmful as tobacco, it is still not safe.

Michael Joseph Blaha is the director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, and shared how there is still a risk with vaping.

“People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health,” said Blaha.

But what exactly are the differences between vaping and smoking tobacco?

The health risks associated with tobacco smoke, which contains thousands of harmful chemicals, are well understood.

While the risks with vaping need to be studied further, Blaha warned there is already evidence of a link between

“Emerging data suggests links to chronic lung disease and asthma, as well as associations between dual use of e-cigarettes and smoking with cardiovascular disease. You’re exposing yourself to all kinds of chemicals that we don’t yet understand and that are probably not safe.”

However there is one factor where cigarettes are the same – they both contain nicotine.

And Blaha warned that while vapes are not as closely understood as tobacco, people who use e-cigarettes may be taking in a higher quantity of nicotine than they would be if they were smoking tobacco.

For example, people can buy cartridges with a higher strength than regular ones, or they can turn up the voltage on the e-cigarette to give them a bigger hit from the vape.

And although NHS guidance suggests that vaping can be a way to reduce harm from smoking tobacco, Blaha expressed concern about people who are taking vaping as a habit in itself, and who don’t already smoke.

“What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would’ve never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit,” said Blaha.

“It’s one thing if you convert from cigarette smoking to vaping. It’s quite another thing to start up nicotine use with vaping. And, getting hooked on nicotine often leads to using traditional tobacco products down the road.”

Mum ‘tried to save man from jumping into tiger enclosure’ as harrowing final moments revealed

A mum who says she tried to save a man from jumping into the tiger enclosure before a horror incident at a wildlife park has spoken out about the ordeal.

Emergency services were contacted shortly after 1.30pm on 10 October when a man had entered the enclosure at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, South Yorkshire Police have said, with the park still remaining closed amid investigations.

Videos circulating online appear to show a man being pawed at and grappled by a tiger named Altai in the enclosure at the park, near Doncaster.

The park said ‘many, many people’ had contacted them about Altai, the Amur tiger involved in the incident, and it confirmed he is ‘safe and well’ and will not be euthanised.

Visitors who were observing the big cats later revealed how panic ensued as they watched the man grapple with the tiger.

A video appears to show the victim sat next to the tiger before being clawed at as he appeared to try and communicate with the animal and was heard shouting “Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.”

One witness told LADbible they saw ‘staff running around’ frantically and ushering people towards the exit, ‘but wouldn’t say anything about why’.

Now, witnesses have told how a mum tried to save the man from jumping into the enclosure.

Eyewitnesses claimed the victim, who has not been named, posed for a photo with the big cat in the background moments before jumping in from a viewing platform.

Anthony Hunt and his girlfriend Scarlet Hogan, who were visiting the park on Saturday, told The Telegraph that a woman with two children ‘desperately tried to pull back’ the man as he tried to get into the compound.

“He overpowered her and jumped off. She seemed really frightened,” Hunt told the publication. “We spoke to her after and she was like, ‘I tried to pull him back’ but I guess she didn’t want to risk her own life as well.”

Hogan added: “The man started praying to the tiger, bowing down to it – the tiger looked a bit confused.

“Up until he got attacked, it was like he was in a trance, not in reality at all. We were just stood there, frozen.”

One animal expert later shared a theory that the tiger did not mean to kill the man initially and that it appeared as though it was ‘playing’ with him.

Park remains closed after tiger attack

It was understood the wildlife park would reopen on Monday (12 October) after it was evacuated following the incident and remained closed on Sunday.

But in a message sent to ticketholders on Monday morning, the park said: “Due to the serious incident that occurred at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday, the 10th of October, unfortunately the park remains closed for the whole of Monday, the 12th October.

“Anyone with a booking for this date will be contacted within the next five working days with details of how to reschedule your booking.

“We apologise for the late notice any inconvenience caused.”

In a previous statement on social media, the wildlife park said people had contacted them about Altai before it was confirmed he is ‘safe and well’ and will not be euthanised following the incident.

It added that members of park staff were ‘deeply affected’ by the incident and receiving specialist support.

South Yorkshire Police meanwhile said it is aware of the footage of the attack online and asked people not to share it.

A spokesperson previously said: “At 1.35pm today (Saturday 10 October) we received reports of a man entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury.

“Emergency services attended and sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man’s family is aware and is being supported by specialist officers. Our thoughts are with them at this distressing time.

“Regarding rumours surrounding the condition of the tiger, the animal was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident and there is no wider risk to the public.

“Following the incident, Yorkshire Wildlife Park was evacuated and officers remain on scene carrying out enquiries. We are aware of videos circulating online and we would encourage people not to share this footage.”
