  • Marlins reportedly signing Pete Fairbanks to 1-year, $13 million deal after Rays turned down reliever’s club option

Pete Fairbanks isn’t returning to the Tampa Bay Rays, but the right-handed relief pitcher is staying in Florida. The Miami Marlins are signing the 32-year-old Fairbanks to a one-year, $13 million deal, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Fairbanks, 32, entered the open market after the Rays declined his $11 million club option for 2026. As a free agent, he will reportedly sign a contract worth $2 million more.

There’s a $1 million signing bonus included in the deal, plus an additional $1 million in incentives based on appearances, per MLB.com, which reported that Fairbanks will have the largest annual salary the Marlins have ever given a relief pitcher, topping the $9 million average Heath Bell earned over the 2012-14 seasons.

Fairbanks was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2015 and made his major-league debut for the organization in 2019. He was traded to the Rays later that year. He spent six-plus seasons in Tampa, serving as the Rays’ primary closer from 2023 to 2025. Over those three years, he piled up 75 saves, good for 12th-most of any reliever during that span, according to The Athletic.

In that stretch, he has recorded a save in 85.2% of his opportunities and posted a 2.98 ERA, 171 strikeouts and only 55 walks. His consistency can be attributed to a high-powered fastball that hovers around 97 mph and is aided by his 6-foot-6, 235-pound frame. Fairbanks has a reliable slider as well and has recently worked a cutter into his arsenal.

Injuries have been an issue for him. From 2021 to 2024, he landed on the injured list on seven different occasions, per The Athletic.

[Get more Marlins news: Miami team feed]

That said, he stayed away from the IL this past season while stacking a career-high 60 1/3 innings across 61 games. His 27 saves were also a personal best.

Although it has declined in recent seasons, Fairbanks’ average strikeouts per nine innings — which was 8.8 in 2025 — should provide a boost to a Marlins bullpen in which he’ll be joined by fellow righties Anthony Bender, Calvin Faucher and Tyler Phillips.

Last year, Miami’s bullpen finished 22nd in MLB in ERA (4.28) and 25th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.21).

Earlier this week, the Marlins announced that right-handed reliever Ronny Henriquez will miss next season after undergoing a hybrid procedure that featured Tommy John surgery.

  • Fantasy Football: Trevor Lawrence and Jakobi Meyers connection has helped elevate the QB and saved the WR

The Jaguars have done all they can to support franchise QB Trevor Lawrence. They drafted Brian Thomas Jr. last year. They traded up for Travis Hunter this year. They hired offensive guru Liam Coen. It’s been a proactive effort.

But maybe Jakobi Meyers was the final piece to the puzzle, the skeleton key needed.

Lawrence wasn’t doing anything special through the first couple of months. Consider his first eight games: the Jags were 5-3 despite middling Lawrence production. He had a piddly 6.3 YPA, nine touchdowns against six picks, a mediocre 79.7 passer rating. Jacksonville was scoring 22 points per game.

At that point, the Jaguars made the trade for Meyers. And it’s been a eureka moment.

The Jaguars lost the first game of the Meyers era, no fault to the offense. It was a 36-29 overtime defeat to Houston. Since then the Jags have won six straight, beating some strong teams in that mix (Chargers, Broncos). And Lawrence has taken off over this period.

The stats jump off the page. Lawrence has 17 touchdowns against five picks over his last seven games, good for a 104.8 rating and an 8.2 YPA. Jacksonville is averaging 33.4 points a game in the stretch, posting 25 points or better every week. And when you easily move the ball against defenses like the Chargers, Texans and Broncos, you earn street cred — and fantasy cred.

Lawrence had a so-so fantasy resume in the first two months, helped occasionally by some resourceful running. Consider those first eight finishes: QB23, QB12, QB28, QB28, QB5, QB13, QB14, QB12. Since the Meyers trade, the numbers are much prettier: QB21, QB11, QB7, QB5, QB13, QB1, QB2.

Lawrence is up to QB4 on the year. And if you grade all the quarterbacks during the past seven weeks, when Lawrence inherited Meyers, the Jacksonville QB jumps to the No. 1 spot, an eyelash above Josh Allen. Lawrence has the tinge of a potential league winner (Indianapolis is a dreamy Week 17 draw), and he’s already smashed his summer ADP (which was in the QB18 range).

The move has saved Meyers for sure — he was WR52 on the broken Raiders offense but is WR16 since heading to Jacksonville. His new team understands how important Meyers is — he signed a three-year, $60 million extension last week.

Schematically, it makes sense, too. Meyers is a dominant player in the middle of the field, a tall and fearless target who provides an easy button for Lawrence. You have to respect that the Jaguars would quickly address a receiver gap despite having already invested so much draft capital in Thomas and Hunter. Something was missing (obviously Hunter’s rookie year was mostly ruined by injury) and it was smart to identify a potential fix.

There are moving parts to the Jacksonville offense. Lawrence has taken off and Meyers has been excellent, and Travis Etienne Jr. (RB6 the last seven weeks) is also tilting leagues. But the Jaguars have been disappointed in Thomas all year, and Hunter showed little before he was hurt. Brenton Strange is a solid tight end, but likely a capped-upside player. We’ll have plenty to sort out in Duval County next season.

But maybe there’s something shinier even before those conversations start. In the current year where the AFC feels wide open, Jacksonville has a puncher’s chance against anyone. I was ready to follow Liam Coen into a burning building after watching him succeed with the Buccaneers. Trevor Lawrence might be ready for that vote of confidence, too.

    Quarterback

    • Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars – The Jacksonville QB has been the MVP at his position for the fantasy playoffs so far with a combined 75.46 points over the past two weeks.

    • Joe Burrow, Bengals – It’s been a rough season for Burrow and his managers but things might pay off late. He’s coming off 28.96 fantasy points last week vs. the Dolphins.

    • Justin Herbert, Chargers – Herbert carved up the Cowboys last week like a Christmas ham. The L.A. QB scored over 30 fantasy points thanks to two passing TDs and a rushing score.

    Running Back

    • Bijan Robinson, Falcons – Robinson has consistently delivered for managers all season, scoring 23+ fantasy points in seven games, including Week 16.

    • Saquon Barkley, Eagles – Barkley may not be the overall fantasy MVP like in 2024, but he’s been MVP-worthy in the fantasy playoffs this season. The Eagles RB has scored in three straight games.

    • Derrick Henry, Ravens – Early on we thought King Henry might be cooked. Nope. The Baltimore RB has double-digit fantasy points in eight of nine games since the team’s bye.

    Receivers

    • Puka Nacua, Rams – Nacua may get the 2025 playoff MVP simply for his astonishing Week 16 performance. The L.A. wideout put up a gargantuan 12-225-2 line.

    • Chris Olave, Saints – Olave may have saved the best for last. The Saints WR had a season-high 31.8 fantasy points in Week 16 and could build on that this week.

    • George Pickens, Cowboys (Gold only) – After a few rough outings, Pickens bounced back in Week 16 with 22.5 fantasy points on a 7-130-1 showing.

    • Stefon Diggs, Patriots (Silver only) – We hadn’t heard from Diggs in fantasy in a bit but he came through in a big spot for New England with 18.3 fantasy points vs. the Ravens.

With new cards released weekly based on fantasy performance, collectors have an ever-changing opportunity to grow their trading card collections with the NFL’s hottest names. Don’t miss out — and get ready to rip your slab pack!

  • Steve Kerr, Draymond Green apologized for mid-game blowup, Warriors coach says; Kerr appreciates beauty in the struggle of ‘fading dynasty’

An especially introspective Steve Kerr told reporters Wednesday that there’s beauty in the struggle as he reflected on the state of his Golden State Warriors and the blowup he had with Draymond Green during the third quarter of a 120-97 win over the Orlando Magic two days earlier.

Kerr and Green were seen in a heated discussion during a timeout Monday night. After an animated exchange, Green decided to remove himself and left for the Chase Center locker rooms.

Although he eventually returned to the bench, he didn’t check back into the game.

Kerr said he and his do-it-all forward had a “great chat” Wednesday. The longtime Warriors head coach said he and Green apologized to each other as well as to the team.

Kerr explained that it was not his finest hour, nor was it a good look for his group.

“That was a time I needed to be calm in the huddle, and so I regret my actions in that exchange,” Kerr said Wednesday.

“These things, they happen, especially when you get two incredibly competitive people like Dray and me. So over the 12 years we’ve been together, this has happened occasionally, and I’m not proud of it.”

Kerr added: “I care so much about Draymond, and the relationship we have is like family. And like family, you go through ups and downs. And my No. 1 goal honestly is for him to finish his career as a Warrior with us fighting — metaphorically, not literally — and competing together until we’re both gone. And I believe that’s going to happen because I believe in Draymond, and I believe in myself and I believe in everything we’ve built for 12 years.”

The Warriors famously selected Green out of Michigan State with the 35th overall pick in the second round of the 2012 draft. Kerr has coached him from the 2014-15 season on. Since, Green has emerged as a four-time All-Star, one-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and nine-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. Together, Kerr and Green have won four NBA championships.

While Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, and then Kevin Durant, consistently shot the lights out, Green has left his own mark on the organization: with defensive tenacity, heady court vision and physical rebounding, plus timely scoring.

“We have four banners out there, and obviously a lot of people have played important roles in that, but I’ve said this before, and I truly believe it. I don’t think we have any without Draymond,” Kerr said. “That’s how much he impacts winning.

“So his ability to channel that passion, that emotion, that raw rage that he has is a key component to what makes us successful. And what I said about the other night, I didn’t channel my own raw emotion and rage, of which there is plenty. We are far more alike than anyone would ever realize.”

Kerr cited a long history of turning negative moments into positive momentum during his relationship with Green, who Kerr described as “very complex.” While Green has racked up technical fouls and served his fair share of suspensions for outbursts during a 14-season NBA career, he’s also known for his basketball acumen and his contemplative commentary.

“We’ve always, always found a way to not only bounce back, but to make strides as a result,” Kerr said, via Warriors reporter Kenzo Fukuda.

‘We are a fading dynasty. … So what is up to us?’

With the win over the Magic, the Warriors improved to 15-15. They’ve won back-to-back games for the fifth time this season. But they’ve still yet to string together more than three victories in a row.

This version of Golden State is spearheaded by Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler III. They’re all at least 35 years old. Butler is a Warriors transplant who helped spark a second-half run last season, which ended in the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves after Curry suffered a hamstring strain in the first game of the series.

“Where we are as a team, as an organization, the most important thing for me is for guys to recognize that there’s beauty in the struggle. There’s beauty in what we’re trying to accomplish right now,” Kerr said Wednesday, via The San Francisco Standard’s Danny Emerman.

“We are no longer the ’17 Warriors, dominating the league. We are a fading dynasty. We know that. Everyone knows that. So what is up to us? How do we carry ourselves night to night? How connected are we? And can we give ourselves another swing at the plate? We did that last year. I was really proud of the team last year. Despite the loss to Minnesota, injury to Steph. Who knows how long we would’ve gone? But we gave ourselves a chance. That’s the goal here.

“We know where we are. We’ve got to know who we are, we’ve got to know what’s possible, and we’ve got to take pride in the struggle, because this is part of life.”

Kerr said he believes sorting out the tiff with Green has been a major step in this Warriors team working through its issues.

He sees an opportunity for Golden State to make another run like last year’s.

As for Green, Kerr wants him to finish his career in a Warriors uniform.

“He’s undyingly loyal and passionate, and I will go to bat for him as long as I’m coaching him here,” Kerr said, per Emerman. “Honestly, I’d go to bat for him 20 years from now when we haven’t been together. That’s how strongly I feel about him. And that’s how I want this thing to end with us, whenever that is.”

  • John Harbaugh rejects claim that Lamar Jackson has slept in Ravens meetings, says relationship with QB is A+

A Baltimore Sun column describing a rift between longtime Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson has circulated furiously online.

Among other things, Mike Preston writes in his column for the Sun that Jackson has been falling asleep in team meetings.

Harbaugh was asked about that and the piece Wednesday.

“I don’t know where that’s coming from,” Harbaugh said ahead of Saturday’s road game versus the Green Bay Packers.

“I’ve never seen that. Ever. That’s not something that I’ve ever witnessed, and I’m in every meeting. And to speculate on how I feel about it… I’ll tell you how I feel. I’m pretty transparent. I think all the guys in the building will tell you, if I have something of conversation, something that I want to talk to them about, I’m right up front.”

In the column, Preston writes that Harbaugh has “become tired” of the two-time NFL MVP.

Harbaugh emphasized Wednesday, though, that he had a great conversation with Jackson just that morning. He said they talked about football, how Jackson’s feeling and other topics, as the dual-threat star tries to work his way back from a back contusion, the latest of several injuries he’s sustained this season while playing for the 7-8 Ravens, who need the Pittsburgh Steelers to lose to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday to have any chance at winning the AFC North crown the following week.

“Our relationship is A+,” Harbaugh said of his connection with Jackson. “So I love him. Always have, always will. And I know he’s fighting like crazy to get back. So none of those reports or things that get said or written or whatever — I don’t need anybody speaking for me.

“Just ask me, and I’ll tell you what I think.”

During Harbaugh and Jackson’s eight seasons together, the Ravens have made the playoffs six times, won four division titles and earned a pair of No. 1 seeds in the AFC.

They haven’t reached the Super Bowl in that span, however, and Jackson’s postseason record is just 3-5. In those games, he’s thrown only three more touchdowns (10) than interceptions (7).

Baltimore needs a pair of wins and some help to even get another swing at the playoffs this season. Jackson hasn’t looked his best on the field most of the season, as he’s battled a laundry list of injuries.

First he missed three games this season with a hamstring injury. Jackson, whose 2022 and 2021 seasons were cut short by knee and ankle issues, respectively, was one of several Ravens players banged up early in the 2025 campaign, as Baltimore slumped to a 1-5 start.

Since he returned in Week 9, he’s been sidelined and limited in practices with knee, toe, ankle and back injuries.

He’s yet to miss another game, although his status is up in the air for Saturday’s contest in Green Bay. Jackson didn’t practice Tuesday or Wednesday. Harbaugh said Wednesday Jackson is “day-to-day.”

“But he could play without that practice for sure,” Harbaugh said. “He’s played a lot of football, won a lot of games for us. If he’s ready to go, he will go. If he can go, he will go. You can bet on that.”

When asked for specifics about the back contusion that Jackson suffered during the first half of last week’s loss to the New England Patriots, Harbaugh said it’s a deep-tissue contusion and not just some black and blue mark.

“I’m not a medical guy, but I did see the MRI,” he said. “It’s legitimate, very painful. Muscles lock up around it. You can’t really move very well. He’s in that process now of loosening all that up, hopefully. And you can’t really say when it’s going to be right.

“He’s got to be able to be an athlete, be able to move. … So that’s what you’re working back towards with all the treatment and everything. So believe me, if he can go out there and do it, this guy’s one of the ultimate competitors that you’re ever going to see. If he’s able to go, he’s going to be out there going.”

  • Before joining the Eagles, Saquon Barkley used to hate head coach Nick Sirianni: ‘I couldn’t stand that motherf***er’

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley used to have very strong feelings about Nick Sirianni.

    They weren’t great.

“I couldn’t stand that motherf***er. I could not,” Barkley said on Wednesday.

But, as Barkley is wrapping up his second full season playing for Sirianni, his feelings have changed completely. He gets it now.

“I wasn’t a fan of him. Now being here and seeing how obsessed he is, ‘Hard Knocks’ and behind the scenes that we have, that you guys are able to see with him coaching, it doesn’t really do it enough justice,” he said, via ABC6’s Jason Dumas. “He’s so obsessed with the little things, and there’s a reason why this team has been super successful.

“It’s been pretty cool to be able to go from, going against him and not being a fan of him and seeing what he’s all about. I think he does a really good job. He’s the perfect coach for Philadelphia.”

Sirianni, who led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl win since the 2017 campaign last season, is in his fifth year leading the Eagles this fall. He’s won double digit games in all but one of his seasons leading the franchise, and he’s gotten the team to the Super Bowl twice now.

Barkley, who led the league in rushing last season, will enter Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills with 1,072 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns. The Eagles have won back-to-back games entering the contest in Orchard Park, New York, and hold a 10-5 record. They’ve already clinched a playoff spot and their second straight NFC East title, too.

The game means more to the Bills when it comes to the postseason. Buffalo trails the New England Patriots in the AFC East race, and have to win out in order to have a shot at winning the divisional title — which is something they haven’t lost since 2019.

While the Eagles haven’t been as dominant offensively this season as they were last year, Sirianni and Barkley have gotten the franchise in position to defend their Super Bowl title. Clearly, Barkley’s initial read of his head coach was off the mark.
