  • Bears WR Rome Odunze a late scratch vs. Browns just before kickoff after aggravating foot injury in warmups

Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze was a late scratch before kickoff on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns after aggravating a foot injury in warmups.

Oduzne had been dealing with a stress fracture and was limited during practice this week and initially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. The Bears listed him as active prior to the game, but ruled him out in the minutes before kickoff after he aggravated the injury. The nature of the aggravated injury and how long it will sideline Odunze were not initially clear.

Odunze initially missed last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers with the injury. He’d previously played in every game of his career since the Bears selected him with the No. 9 pick in the 2024 draft.

The injury arrives as the Bears find themselves in a fight to make the playoffs. Previously in position for the No. 1 seed in the NFC, last week’s 28-21 loss to the Packers dropped Chicago to 9-4 and behind 9-3-1 Green Bay in the NFC North. In a tight NFC playoff race, Chicago entered Sunday in position for the seventh and final spot in the NFC playoffs, just ahead of the 8-5 Detroit Lions.

Odunze is Chicago’s leading receiver with 44 catches for 661 yards and 6 touchdowns in 12 games. DJ Moore projects as the top target for quarterback Caleb Williams in Odunze’s absence, but rookie Luther Burden has also been seeing more time in the second half of the season.

The late injury designation is a blow to fantasy football managers as well. Odunze was started in 18% of Yahoo Fantasy Football leagues prior to kickoff as the fantasy playoffs begin in most standard leagues.

  • Cardinals’ Andre Baccellia gives thumbs up after hit on kickoff return left him immobilized on stretcher, hospitalized

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Andre Baccellia left Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans on a stretcher after a neck injury resulting from a hit on a kickoff return.

Baccellia showed movement in his feet as medical trainers tended to him on the field. They placed him on a stretcher and immobilized his head and neck. Baccellia gave a thumbs up as he was carted off the field on the stretcher.

The Cardinals later announced to reporters that Baccellia was being transported to a Houston hospital for evaluation and that he had demonstrated movement in all of his extremities. The precise nature of the injury wasn’t initially clear.

Baccellia sustained the injury while returning a kick late in the second quarter. A pile of Texans defenders landed on top of him after a tackle, and it wasn’t clear from game video what caused Baccellia’s injury.

Baccellia’s Cardinals teammates left the sideline to surround him on the field as trainers tended to him.

A third-season pro with the Cardinals, Baccellia works primarily on special teams.

  • Fernando Mendoza wins the Heisman + Navy beats Army & Big 12 private capital deal

The Indiana Hoosiers have their first Heisman trophy winner. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the 91st Heisman trophy on Saturday night. He beat out fellow finalists Diego Pavia, Jeremiyah Love and Julian Sayin by a wide margin. Andy Staples, Ross Dellenger and Steven Godfrey discuss Mendoza’s win and share their thoughts on the quarterback’s stellar season. Plus, Andy and Ross share who they voted for. The guys also discuss how the conversation around Mendoza immediately turned to if he will succeed in the NFL. They dive into the NFL’s quarterback obsession and where they go wrong when evaluating college quarterbacks. The Heisman ceremony was not the only big event that happened on Saturday. The 126th edition of the Army-Navy game saw Navy take the win for the second straight year. The Midshipmen defeated the Black Knights 17-16 on a late game touchdown pass from Blake Horvath to Eli Heidenreich. Ross was in attendance and shares his experience at the game after the guys share their thoughts on the game.

Then, the crew discusses the Big 12’s latest news. Last week, Ross shared Utah’s news about their private equity deal and the guys said this would open the floodgates. Well, that may be proving to be correct as the Big 12 announced they are close to a private capital deal. Ross shares the story he broke and the crew discusses what the impact of this potential deal could be. Godfrey cautions the risk level of this move.

Later, we stay in the Big 12 for some more news. Utah announced that head coach Kyle Whittingham is stepping down. Utah’s appearance in the upcoming Las Vegas bowl will be his last game as the leader of the Utes. Defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley has long been Whittingham’s heir apparent and will be Utah’s new head coach. The guys discuss the timing of this move, if this move will work for Utah and Scalley and if this means that we may see Whittingham coaching elsewhere in the future.

  • Brady Cook’s family celebrates with cheers, hugs after undrafted Jets quarterback throws first NFL touchdown

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn showed a lot of confidence in undrafted quarterback Brady Cook ahead of Week 15. In early December, Glenn said he was confident Cook would be a good quarterback in the NFL.

Cook took a big step toward fulfilling that prediction in the first quarter Sunday. As time was running down in the first quarter, Cook threw his first NFL touchdown, finding wideout AD Mitchell near the back of the end zone.

The broadcast did a tremendous job covering the play. Right after Cook threw his first career score, the camera immediately cut to his family, who celebrated with cheers and hugs in the stands.

Cook’s celebration was understated. He knocked helmets and slapped hands with his teammates. In fact, Cook may have been too chill about the whole thing. Despite throwing his first NFL touchdown pass, Cook ran off the field without securing the football.

Thankfully, Mitchell was looking out for the rookie. After the score, Mitchell made sure to grab the ball and run it all the way back from the end zone to give it to Cook on the sideline.

The rest of the game didn’t go well for Cook. The rookie finished the contest 22-of-33 for 176 yards. He did manage his first career NFL touchdowns, but added three interceptions in the 48-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cook’s odds of playing in the NFL, let alone starting a game, were pretty low after he was not selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite a few strong seasons at Missouri, the 24-year-old wasn’t a major prospect.

But the Jets saw enough in Cook to sign him after the draft. And Cook showed enough in camp to earn a spot on the team’s practice squad. Early in the season, Cook bounced between the active roster and practice squad but didn’t see time in a game until Week 14, when Cook came on in relief of Tyrod Taylor.

It wasn’t the best debut. After being pushed into action, Cook went 14-of-30 for 163 yards and two interceptions. Following Sunday’s game, Cook now has five interceptions on the season.

With Taylor and Justin Fields both dinged in Week 15, though, Cook was announced as the Jets’ starter against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He showed some promise early in the contest, tossing his first career NFL touchdown.

While Cook’s future in the league is still in question, especially after the way the rest of the game went, it was a strong start from the rookie. Whether or not he gets another opportunity, both Cook and his family will remember that first touchdown pass for a long, long time.

  • As Michigan looks for a new coach, Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer says he has ‘no interest’ in ‘any other job’

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer has moved to quell any speculation that he could be interested in the Michigan job.

DeBoer said in a statement Sunday via Alabama’s NIL collective that he was happy at Alabama and that he has “no interest in speaking with anyone else about any other job.”

“My family and I are very happy in Tuscaloosa and remain extremely grateful for the support of President [Peter] Mohler, [athletic director] Greg Byrne, the board and so many others,” DeBoer said. “We have an incredible opportunity in front of us, so my sole focus is on Alabama football and our preparations to play Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff.

“I have not spoken and have no interest in speaking with anyone else about any other job. I am fully committed to this program and look forward to continuing as the head football coach at the University of Alabama.”

DeBoer is in his second season at Alabama as the Tide prepares to play Oklahoma on Friday in their first-round College Football Playoff game. He had been widely mentioned as a possibility to be the Wolverines’ next coach.

On3 reported Sunday afternoon that DeBoer and Alabama had been in talks about a contract extension.

The job at Michigan opened on Wednesday when Sherrone Moore was fired with cause after the school found evidence that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Moore was arraigned on Friday on a felony home invasion charge and two other misdemeanors after he allegedly went to the woman’s house after he was fired and told her that she ruined his life while he threatened to take his own life.

DeBoer was a potential candidate at Michigan following the 2023 season after his Washington Huskies lost to Michigan in the national championship game. Jim Harbaugh left the Wolverines to go to the Los Angeles Chargers and instead of going with an outside hire, Michigan promoted Moore, the team’s offensive coordinator. Moore had served as Michigan’s interim coach during two different Harbaugh suspensions in 2023.

DeBoer ended up in Tuscaloosa after the surprise retirement of Nick Saban following the 2023 season. Saban’s Alabama team lost to Michigan in the semifinals of the final four-team College Football Playoff.

Alabama (10-3) has lost at least three games in each of DeBoer’s first two seasons. Alabama lost three or more games just twice in Saban’s tenure. One of those was a 7-6 season in his first year at Alabama in 2007. Alabama never lost more than two games in a season under Saban’s watch over his last 13 years with the Crimson Tide.

The standard Saban set is nearly impossible. He’s one of the greatest college coaches of all time, if not the best ever. But his success has also led to some grumbling from Alabama fans, especially after the team missed out on last year’s playoff entirely.

Michigan, meanwhile, will need to find someone else to replace Moore. At the moment, other candidates appear to include Washington coach Jedd Fisch, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

  • Hawks veteran Kristaps Porziņģis will reportedly miss at least 2 weeks due to illness

Atlanta Hawks big man Kristaps Porziņģis will miss at least two more weeks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, marking the latest illness issue for the NBA veteran over the past two seasons.

Though specifics aren’t yet known, Porziņģis was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, last season when he was with the Boston Celtics. He missed significant time during the playoffs with the Celtics, and actually left Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals early because he “couldn’t breathe.”

But Porziņģis, who was traded to the Hawks this past offseason, entered this campaign healthy and in good shape. He averaged 19.2 points and 5.6 rebounds over the first 13 games of the year, but he hasn’t played since Dec. 5 and has now missed seven of the Hawks’ last eight games.

If Porziņģis is out for just two weeks, he could be back on the floor by the end of the calendar year.

POTS, according to the Cleveland Clinic, “is a condition that causes a number of symptoms when you transition from lying down to standing up, such as a fast heart rate, dizziness and fatigue.” There is no cure, but there are treatments and things that can be done to manage symptoms better.

Porziņģis revealed in October that there were times where his heart rate would rise to 130 beats per minute when he would go from lying down to standing up. All he could do, he said, was “just lay on the couch and be a house cat.”

“It hit me, and it hit me like a truck,” Porziņģis said. “The breathing wasn’t good. I did everything I could potentially to feel as good as I could, but my engine wasn’t running the way I wanted.”

The Hawks are entering Sunday’s game with the Philadelphia 76ers with a 14-12 record after losing four of their last five games. Porziņģis, 30, is in the final year of a two-year, $60 million deal this fall.

Though Porziņģis has been managing his POTS with help from doctors pretty successfully in recent months — he even managed to play in six games with Latvia at the FIBA EuroBasket tournament this past summer while leading them to the Round of 16 — this is going to be something Porziņģis has to deal with throughout the rest of his playing career.
