  • Pop-Tarts Bowl draws 8.7 million viewers, most among ESPN’s non-CFP bowls so far this postseason

The Pop-Tarts Bowl is warming up more than its famous jumbo-sized toaster.

It’s ESPN’s most-watched non-College Football Playoff bowl game so far this postseason, according to ESPN PR, which reported on Friday a 13% uptick in viewership of those games through Dec. 27.

As No. 12 BYU rallied to beat No. 22 Georgia Tech 25-21, the Pop-Tarts Bowl averaged 8.7 million viewers, more than the 6.8 million it drew the year before when No. 18 Iowa State eked out a 42-41 victory over No. 13 Miami.

That 6.8 million in 2024 were the most viewers the bowl game had pulled since 2008 when it was called the Champs Sports Bowl.

As for the 8.7 million in 2025, that’s ESPN’s biggest number for a non-CFP or New Year’s Six bowl since the Citrus Bowl during the 2019-20 postseason.

The Pop-Tarts Bowl benefited from another great matchup, once again bringing in a CFP-caliber team. In 2024, Miami fit the bill. This time around, it was BYU, which had lost only two games all season. Both defeats came against Texas Tech, and one of those was in the Big 12 title game.

The calendar also gave the Pop-Tarts Bowl and other postseason games on the Saturday after Christmas a boost. With people still at home for the holidays, bowls on Dec. 27 performed exceptionally well.

In fact, that’s when ESPN’s top-three most-watched non-CFP bowls through that date were played.

The Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, which saw Penn State take down Clemson 22-10 at Yankee Stadium, averaged 7.6 million viewers. The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, which featured ACC runner-up and No. 19 Virginia holding off Missouri 13-7, averaged 6 million viewers, per ESPN PR.

Those games, of course, also provided matchups that were either entertaining or particularly intriguing for at least one fan base involved. In terms of the Pinstripe Bowl, Penn State and Clemson were both ranked in the top four of the preseason AP Poll. Meanwhile, as for the Gator Bowl, UVA was enjoying a special season, and its fans had every reason to watch their Cavaliers notch a program-record 11th win.

The Pop-Tarts Bowl, though, headlined the day and the list ESPN PR put out Friday. It’s a game Notre Dame potentially could have played in had it not opted out of bowl consideration. For reference, according to Front Office Sports, Notre Dame averaged 3.925 million viewers this season — the 15th-most in the sport — while going 10-2 and narrowly missing the CFP.

While only 3 years old in name, the Pop-Tarts Bowl is already filled with lore. The past two seasons, the winner has received a trophy with a working toaster.

The event has mastered the art of going viral, and its Pop-Tart mascots are behind shenanigans that often make the social media algorithm tick.

In 2024, the Pop-Tarts Bowl resurrected a toasted and eaten Strawberry Pop-Tart from the previous year’s game.

In 2025, the bowl introduced a ring of honor for its fallen pastries. BYU and Georgia Tech had Pop-Tarts-themed helmets and end zones.

And, naturally, there was another “snackrifice.”

  • Patrick Mahomes rehabs in Oregon jersey after losing Orange Bowl bet to rookie Jeffrey Bassa

Patrick Mahomes’ season is over. His NFL team’s season is all but over. And now his college team’s season is over. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback apparently had to pay a price for the latter.

A day after Mahomes’ Texas Tech alma mater got shut out by Oregon in the Orange Bowl, Chiefs rookie Jeffrey Bassa posted the result of a jersey bet between the only Oregon and Texas Tech alums on the Kansas City roster: Mahomes, on a training table, wearing Bassa’s Oregon jersey.

The Red Raiders didn’t give Mahomes much reason for hope of reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals. They couldn’t get any momentum going on offense and committed four turnovers in a 23-0 loss, ending a season in which they ran through Big 12, then received a reality check.

Bassa is very familiar with the Ducks defense that shut Texas Tech down. He earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2023 and was part of the program’s 2024 Big Ten championship team, which had its own disappointment in the CFP.

The Chiefs selected Bassa in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he has appeared in all 16 games for the team this season, with zero starts. He has mostly appeared on special teams.

Mahomes’ season is over after he tore his ACL last month, and his availability for 2026 will depend on how his rehab progresses.

  • No. 2 Michigan routs No. 24 USC, becomes first team since 1996-97 to beat 3 ranked opponents by 30-plus points

Michigan was a 21.5-point favorite Friday against a 24th-ranked USC team. The No. 2 Wolverines won by 30, without their best stuff offensively and with their bench emptied in the final minutes of a 96-66 win.

Dusty May’s group, which previously handled then-No. 21 Auburn and then-No. 12 Gonzaga, is now the first team since 1996-97 to beat three ranked teams by at least 30 points in a season, according to The Field of 68.

And the Wolverines (13-0, 3-0 Big Ten) have barely bitten into the conference slate. The Trojans (12-2, 1-2) hadn’t faced a ranked foe this season before taking the court at Crisler Center. They’ll play their second in a row Monday against No. 9 Michigan State, as part of a weeklong, three-game road trip.

USC couldn’t slow down a high-octane Michigan squad that accounted for 26 of the game’s 28 fast-break points. The Wolverines have the fifth-highest adjusted tempo in college basketball this season, according to KenPom, and they left the Trojans in the dust.

It didn’t help that Eric Musselman’s team committed 21 turnovers, off which Michigan scored 24 points. USC came in leading the country with 31.2 free throws per game and attempted 33 of them. But a 63.6 percentage at the charity stripe hurt the Trojans’ chances.

They were paced by Samford graduate transfer Jaden Brownell, who scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Despite entering 27th nationally in 3-point percentage (38.3%), the Wolverines went only 6 of 30, or 20%, from downtown against the Trojans.

Still, they nearly reached the century mark. Ten Michigan players etched their names in the box score. Four players scored in double figures off the bench, including senior guard Roddy Gayle Jr., who poured in 12 points before fouling out.

Sophomore forward Morez Johnson Jr. converted 10 of his 12 field-goal attempts and finished with a career-high 29 points, along with six rebounds.

Michigan started the first half with an 11-0 run and ended the first half with a 6-0 run. Then it turned an 18-point halftime advantage into another 30-point victory, made possible by a last-second steal and layup by L.J. Cason as USC tried to play out the final seconds.

Michigan has been beating the brakes off teams

USC shouldn’t feel too bad because Michigan has been doing this to just about everyone. The Wolverines have played 13 games, and they’ve won 10 of them by 20-plus points.

Of those 10 victories, six have been by at least 40 points.

Michigan even beat La Salle by 52 point on Dec. 21. One of the Wolverines’ 40-point wins came against a 12th-ranked Gonzaga team on Nov. 26. The Bulldogs have responded with an eight-game win streak that’s included victories over then-No. 18 Kentucky and then-No. 25 UCLA.

But the spectacle versus Gonzaga, the first of the three blowouts Michigan’s authored against ranked opponents this season, set the tone at the Players Era Festival. A 59-point first half powered a 102-72 win over then-No. 21 Auburn.

Michigan’s average margin of victory over the past 10 games is 34.5 points:

Michigan has scored at least 100 points seven times this season. The Wolverines are sixth in adjusted offensive efficiency and first in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to KenPom, which favors Michigan in the rest of its games and projects a 29-2 record for May and Co.

With the way the Wolverines have been dominating the competition, though, it’s only a matter of time before conversations about a potential undefeated season come about.

  • Russell Westbrook passes Oscar Robertson as all-time scoring leader among point guards

Russell Westbrook has another place in the NBA record books.

The former MVP reached 26,711 career points Friday, passing Oscar Robertson to become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader among point guards. Robertson was previously the top scorer at the position with 26,710 points.

Westbrook finished the game with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 turnovers in the Sacramento Kings’ 129-102 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Westbrook was already the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles and in rebounds among guards. He is seventh on the all-time assists leaderboard and is on pace to pass Mark Jackson and Steve Nash for fifth by the end of the season.

Of course, with the scoring record, the point guard distinction is an unofficial one. There are now 14 players ahead of Westbrook on the NBA’s all-time leading scorer list and only three of them are guards: Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and James Harden. Jordan and Bryant are both quintessential shooting guards, while Harden has spent his career in more of a combo role.

Westbrook has spent his post-Oklahoma City Thunder career as something of a journeyman, joining the Kings this season on a one-year, $3.6 million contract (aka the veteran minimum). He has still averaged double-digit points in every season of his career and currently ranks fourth on the Kings with 14.4 points per game, his highest output since the 2022-23 season.

He also entered Friday shooting 42.3% from the field, his worst mark since 2010, but that’s partially offset by a career high 35.3% clip from 3-point range.

It was a tough night if you hate seeing less-heralded Oscar Robertson records go down, as Giannis Antetokounmpo surpassed him to become the all-time leader in 30-10-5 games. What a time to be alive.

How to watch NFL games in 2025:

Many NFL games are broadcast on local channels, so if you’re looking to catch an in-market game, it may be as simple as turning on your TV (or setting up a digital TV antenna) or finding a live TV streaming service that carries the correct RSN (Regional Sports Network). If you want to watch out-of-market games, a $7 monthly subscription to NFL+ will let you watch every out-of-market local and primetime game in the season on your phone — but only a select few regular-season games on your TV. You could also spring for the uber-expensive NFL Sunday Ticket package to get every out-of-market Sunday game of the season.

When it comes to nationally broadcast games, NFL games typically air across ESPN, NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC and NFL Network. Thursday Night Football games stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, select football games will stream exclusively on Peacock, games on CBS will stream live on Paramount+, and Monday Night Football games will air on ESPN or ABC and stream on the newly revamped ESPN+ this season. That’s six channels and four streaming platforms to keep up with this season — and that’s not counting your local RSN’s for in-market games and an NFL+ or NFL Sunday Ticket subscription for out-of-market games. Plus, Netflix is once again hosting at least two Christmas Day matches, so add that subscription into the mix. And we can’t forget about Fox One, Fox’s first streaming service, a place where you can also stream games airing on FOX (if you don’t already have access to it).

Confused? You’re not alone. Here’s a breakdown of the platforms we recommend checking out during the 2025 NFL season, so that come game time, tuning into your favorite team’s games will be as easy as simply turning on the TV.

The race for the NFC West (and the overall No. 1 NFC team) will be determined when the Seattle Seahawks face the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday in their final game of the season. Their division has been one of the tightest competitions of the season; the winner of this weekend’s game will earn not just the conference and division titles, but a home field advantage in the playoffs, too. In the event of a tie, the 49ers, who are hosting Saturday’s game, will earn the No. 1 spot.

  • After No. 13 Nebraska’s victory over No. 9 Michigan State, Huskers players ask fans to stop storming court after big wins

Nebraska’s men’s basketball team has a message to the fans for the rest of the season: There’s no need to storm the court after big wins.

The No. 13 Huskers beat No. 9 Michigan State 58-56 on Friday night to move to 14-0 on the season. After the game, Nebraska’s fans poured onto the court and both Jamarques Lawrence and Rienk Mast said in their postgame news conference that fans can start leaving the floor empty after games.

“We’re supposed to win that game, guys,” Lawrence said. “No more court storms please. I just gotta say that.”

Both Lawrence and Mast are well aware that Nebraska’s basketball history doesn’t match that of most power conference programs. The team has just two NCAA tournament appearances in the 2000s and hasn’t won an NCAA tournament game across eight postseason appearances.

But Fred Hoiberg’s team appears poised to break that drought and even make a deep run into the tournament.

“I like that the fans got to enjoy that moment, but if you are the No. 13 against the No. 9 and you’re at home, in my opinion you’re supposed to win that game,” Mast said. “Again, don’t blame the fans at all that they got excited for that win, but I think from here on out we’ve proven that we belong in these games and we’re supposed to win these types of games.”

[Get more Huskers men’s basketball news: Nebraska team feed]

In addition to being one of just six unbeaten programs entering the first weekend in January, Nebraska’s win streak is the longest in the country at 18. The Huskers won the College Basketball Crown tournament at the end of the 2024-25 season after missing out on the NCAA tournament.

This season, Nebraska’s No. 13 ranking is already the highest since the program was No. 11 during the 1990-91 season. That was the first of four straight seasons Nebraska made the NCAA tournament. Don’t be surprised if the Huskers start a streak like that this season.

“We’ve done something that hasn’t been done in this program ever — running the table in non-conference hasn’t been done in almost 100 years, so there’s a lot of things these guys can be proud of,” Hoiberg said. “But at the same time, the most impressive thing about this group is how they’ve handled it. They haven’t gotten big-headed. A lot of things have been written. And listen, if it flips, it’s going to go the other way. And they’ve got to handle that well.”

  • Theo Johnson’s appearance at Knicks game raises questions after Giants TE was ruled out of Week 18 with an illness

Early Friday afternoon, the New York Giants released their final injury report for Week 18 and tight end Theo Johnson was listed as “out” with an illness for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Hours later, Johnson was shown on the Madison Square Garden scoreboard while attending the New York Knicks game against the Atlanta Hawks. That appearance raised questions about how the second-year tight end could be out in public despite being set to miss the Giants’ season finale in two days.

Johnson even took to Instagram on Friday night and posted a story with the caption, “I am not sick.”

This wasn’t a case of the tanking theory that the Giants were keeping players out for a second straight week in hopes of of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. According to the team, Johnson is dealing with a non-contagious infection, “not the flu or COVID, where being around other people is a risk.”

[Get more Giants news: New York team feed]

Interim head coach Mike Kafka was asked Thursday about Johnson’s week-long stay on the injury report with an illness. “So he’s just still got a little bit of a sickness and just infection that we’re just working through. So he’s just kind of trying to clean it up, see where it goes,” he said.

Johnson was one of six Giants ruled out for Week 18, along with cornerback Cor’Dale Flott, safety Jevón Holland, offensive lineman Evan Neal, defensive lineman Rakeem Nuñez-Roches Sr. and wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson.

The Giants needed to lose to the Las Vegas Raiders last week to secure the No. 1 pick. They did not, winning 34-10. Despite that, they still have a chance to own the top selection, but they need help in Week 18.

On Sunday, the Giants need to lose to the Cowboys, have the Raiders beat the Kansas City Chiefs, and get 1 1/2 combined wins (a tie equals half a win) from the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks.

  • Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry charges at official after controversial call

A disputed call near the end of his team’s 72-71 loss at Cal on Friday night caused Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry to lose his composure.

Shrewsberry charged off the floor in pursuit of referee Adam Flore as soon as the final horn sounded. Multiple players and staffers had to restrain Shrewsberry as the third-year Notre Dame coach continued to shout at Flore and point in his direction.

Flore became the target of Shrewsberry’s rage when he controversially awarded Cal the chance for a go-ahead four-point play in the final seconds.

With Notre Dame leading by three and 9.9 seconds to play, Shrewsberry instructed the Fighting Irish to foul before Cal could attempt a game-tying 3-pointer. Notre Dame guard Logan Imes twice swiped at Cal guard Dai Dai Ames as he crossed mid-court but no foul was called. The third time, Imes got the timing wrong, reaching at Ames just before he rose and buried a 3-pointer from the left wing.

Flore initially ruled it an and-1 opportunity. Then the referees overturned that call and said the foul occurred before the shot. Then the referees huddled together once more and reversed the call a second time, deeming the basket good and sending Ames to the foul line to attempt the go-ahead free throw with 5.5 seconds remaining.

“I thought there was a foul going up,” Cal coach Mark Madsen told reporters after the game. “I saw the official signal it. They conversed a couple times and they allowed it. There’s so much emotion in that gym, for the officials, for me, for the other team. I was grateful Dai Dai rose up and made the shot and I was grateful Dai Dai had the maturity and the huge presence of mind and the composure to knock down the free throw.”

After Ames sank the go-ahead foul shot, Notre Dame had one final chance to win, but Braedon Shrewsberry’s 3-point attempt clanked off the front rim.

In a statement released Saturday morning, Micah Shrewsberry apologized for his behavior after the final buzzer, calling his actions “inappropriate and not symbolic of the leader I strive to be and what Notre Dame expects of its coaches and educators.”

“I will learn from this lack of judgement and be better in the future,” he added.

Shrewsberry apparently will avoid suspension for his postgame actions. The ACC called the matter closed on Saturday after publicly reprimanding Shrewsberry for violating the league’s sportsmanship policy.

“Shrewsberry aggressively confronted a member of the officiating crew following the game,” the ACC’s statement said. “The unsportsmanlike behavior that was displayed is unacceptable and tarnishes the on-court play between these institutions.”
